Condi Rice coming soon to CBS – and Stockton

Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is coming soon to a television, and a speaking engagement, near you.

Condoleezza-Rice-photo-by-Steve-Gladfelter-Stanford.jpgCBS News announced yesterday that Rice, 58, who is now a Stanford professor and Hoover Institution senior fellow, is now a CBS News contributor, effective immediately. “In this role, the former Secretary of State will use her insight and vast experience to explore issues facing America at home and abroad,” the news release said.

Rice, who was President George W. Bush’s Secretary of State from 2005 to 2009 and his National Security Advisor from 2001 to 2005, is also a founding partner of RiceHadleyGates LLC, an international business consulting firm.

She will be featured at a March 21 forum on “Advancing Women’s Leadership,” to be held at the University of the Pacific’s Alex G. Spanos Center; tickets cost $25 and will go on sale tomorrow (Tuesday, Jan. 22) at the university’s box office. Proceeds will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Stockton and the University’s Women’s Resource Center.

The forum aims to inspire participants, especially young women, to make a lasting, positive and powerful impact in the communities where they live and work.

“We are thrilled and proud to bring Dr. Condoleezza Rice to Stockton,” Kathleen Lagorio Janssen, chair of University of the Pacific’s Board of Regents and a member of the Advancing Women’s Leadership planning committee, said in a news release. “Her vast accomplishments on the national and global stages are an inspiration to all aspiring leaders, men and women, who are working to improve the lives of those around them.”

Full report on the CA9 McNerney-Gill debate

Delta water issues, agriculture and the economy were at the fore as Rep. Jerry McNerney and Republican challenger Ricky Gill of Lodi met for their only general-election debate Monday night.

The forum, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of San Joaquin County, attracted a capacity crowd of 350 in the University of the Pacific’s Long Theater, with up to 150 more watching from an overflow room in a nearby building.

McNerney, D-Stockton, opened by noting his six years in Congress were preceded by 20 years in industry, including some time running his own business, but his public service was inspired by his son’s decision to join the Air Force soon after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. He said his priorities for the next term would be creating jobs and improving the local economy; protecing the Delta; and serving veterans.

“We face a crippling level of underrepresentation in this district,” Gill countered in his opening statement, which has led to a stagnant economy, a rampant foreclosure crisis, failing schools and other ills. He said he would spend his first term striving to put local residents back to work, fixing schools and cleaning up government.

Asked about veterans’ services, McNerney noted he helped bring a veterans’ hospital to the county, for which ground is to be broken next year; he said it’s part of what he feels is “a sacred responsibility” to care for those who took up arms to serve the nation. Gill said he agrees budgets can’t be balanced on veterans’ backs, and he would work to expedite funding for the veterans hospital as well as to speed up the processing of veterans’ benefit claims.

Asked about the foreclosure crisis, Gill noted he has vowed not to accept any money from Wall Street banks, while McNerney has accepted such funds. McNerney said he has been aggressive in holding local workshops for those stricken by the crisis and in holding banks accountable on Capitol Hill.

Asked about the negative campaign mailers both candidates have sent out, McNerney decline to apologize for anything that’s been said but noted the corrosive influence of money from special interests outside the district is “taking away the people’s voice.” He said he has supported the Disclose Act to shine a light on that money, and supports President Obama’s re-election so Obama can appoint Supreme Court justices who will overturn the Citizens United ruling that opened the money floodgates; he said he also supports amending the Constitution to void that ruling. Gill said people are worried not only about money in politics but where that money comes from, noting much of McNerney’s campaign funding comes from outside the district; he also noted a few falsehoods contained in McNerney’s mailers, such as a claim that he still lives with his parents – in reality, he moved out last year, into a home across the road from his parents’ home on the family’s property.

East Bay political calendar: Fire tax, congress and state measures

Check out these upcoming political events in the East Bay.

Concord

CONFIRE CHIEF TO TALK ABOUT TAX: Contra Costa Fire Chief Daryl Louder will address the county’s mayors Thursday about his agency’s fiscal woes and the fire safety parcel tax on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Measure Q asks voters to approve a $75 annual parcel tax on a single-family home and create a tiered commercial rate, The funds would help the county’s largest fire district keep up to a third of its 28 fire stations open. The tax would expire in seven years.

The fire chief’s presentation is free and open to the public. The dinner following the business meeting is $50 a person and tickets may or may not be available at the door for the meal.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Concord Hilton, 1970 Diamond Blvd., in Concord.

The Mayors Conference is an association of the county’s 19 mayors. It meets monthly and has a variety of statutory responsibilities including the appointment of city representatives.

San Ramon

SCHOOL BOARD FORUM SET: Candidates vying for two seats on the San Ramon Valley Unified School District board have been invited to participate in a forum on Oct. 8.

The San Ramon Valley Council of PTAs and the Danville-Alamo-Walnut Creek chapter of the American Association of University Women will sponsor the event. Contra Costa Times political reporter and columnist Lisa Vorderbrueggen will moderate.

The candidates are incumbent Greg Marvel and challengers Mark Jewett and Dwight Winn.

Candidates will answer questions posed by the moderator and submitted from the audience.

The public event will be held from 7-8:45 p.m. at Iron Horse Middle School multipurpose room, 12601 Alcosta Blvd., San Ramon.

Pinole

FORUM SET: Candidates for two seats on the Pinole City Council have been invited to participate in a forum on Oct. 9.

Co-sponsored by Common Cause and Concerned Citizens of Pinole, the event will be moderated by Contra Costa Times political reporter and columnist Lisa Vorderbrueggen.

Three candidates are incumbents Roy Swearingen and Peter Murray, and challenger Ivette Ricco.

The open public event will be from 7-9 p.m. in the Pinole City Council chambers, 2131 Pear St., Pinole.

Pinole Community TV will air the forum on Comcast Channel 26 and AT&T Channel 99.

Stockton

UOP TO HOST CONGRESSIONAL DEBATE: Democratic Rep. Jerry McNerney and his GOP challenger Ricky Gill will debate on Oct. 15 at the University of the Pacific’s Stockton campus.

McNerney is seeking re-election in the newly drawn 9th Congressional District, which encompasses the bulk of San Joaquin County and slice of far eastern Contra Costa County.

The event is co-hosted by the League of Women Voters and the college’s political science department.

A team of panelists from the community will ask questions of the candidates, who will also make opening and closing statements.

The public event will be held at 6 p.m. at university’s Long Theatre, 3601 Pacific Avenue in Stockton,

Pleasant Hill

COMMISSION HOSTS FORUM: Candidates vying for the Mt. Diablo School District board will participate in a candidates’ forum Oct. 18 in Pleasant Hill.

The forum is sponsored by the Pleasant Hill Education/Schools Advisory Commission and moderated by Contra Costa Times political reporter and columnist Lisa Vorderbrueggen.

It will be held from 7-9 p.m. at Pleasant Hill City Hall, 100 Gregory Lane, in Pleasant Hill.

The five candidates are incumbent Sherry Whitmarsh, and challengers Ernie DeTrinidad, Brian Lawrence, Debra Mason and Barbara Oaks. Incumbent Gary Eberhart is not seeking re-election.

Questions will be a mixed of those prepared in advance and those submitted that evening from the audience. Residents may also submit a question via email to Martin Nelis at mnelis@ci.pleasant-hill.ca.us.

The forum will be broadcast on public access television Comcast Channel 28, ATT U-Verse Channel 99 and Astound Channel 29.

Lafayette

COLUMNISTS TACKLE 2012: Contra Costa Times’ editorial columnist Daniel Borenstein and Sacramento Bee political columnist Dan Walters will team up on Oct. 24 at the Commonwealth Club.

In “Ballot Box 2012: A Key to the CA Election,” the journalists will take a look at the issues facing Californians in the upcoming election.

In November, Californians will consider solutions to the state’s budgetary woes, campaign finance reform and a proposed repeal of the three-strikes law, among many other initiatives.

Check-in begins at 6 p.m. followed by the program at 6:30 p.m. at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center, 3491 Mt. Diablo Blvd., Lafayette.

Tickets are $22 for the general public, $12 for Commonwealth Club members and $7 for students with valid identification.

Bay Area’s turn to speak on the death penalty

The California Commission on the Fair Administration of Justice — created by the state Senate to probe causes of wrongful convictions and make recommendations and proposals to ensure fair and accurate administration of criminal justice — will hold the last of its three public hearings on issues surrounding the death penalty from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. next Friday, March 28 in the California Mission Room on the lower level of Santa Clara University‘s Benson Student Center, 500 El Camino Real.

About an hour will be reserved for public comment at the hearing’s end, with each public participant limited to no more than 3 minutes and sign-ups accepted on a first-come, first-served basis; if you’re interested, e-mail Chris Boscia at cboscia@scu.edu.

Expert testimony at this hearing will include a report on the gubernatorial clemency process in California death cases, prepared for the commission by University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law professors Linda Carter and Mary Beth Moylan.

Others scheduled to testify include:

  • Craig Haney and Lois Heaney, National Jury Project;
  • Kent Scheidegger, Criminal Justice Legal Foundation;
  • Natasha Minsker, ACLU of Northern California;
  • Judy Kerr, California Crime Victims for Alternatives to the Death Penalty;
  • Berkeley criminal defense attorney James S. Thomson;
  • Bill Babbitt, Murder Victims’ Families for Human Rights; and
  • Darrel Myers, Murder Victim Families for Reconciliation.
  • This will be the 22-member commission’s ninth and final public hearing; earlier sessions addressed the problems surrounding eyewitness misidentification, false confessions, testimony by in-custody informants, forensic evidence, professional responsibility of prosecutors and defense lawyers, and remedies for wrongful conviction.

    But Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in October vetoed three bills based on the commission’s recommendations — SB 756, appointing a task force to develop guidelines for police line-ups and photo arrays to increase accuracy of eyewitness identification; SB 511, requiring electronic recording of police interrogations in police stations, jails, or other holding facilities for homicides and other violent felonies; and SB 609, requiring corroboration of testimony by jailhouse informants.

    The commission’s final report will be issued in June.

    Bill Clinton’s coming back

    Hillary Clinton‘s campaign says former President Bill Clinton, after visiting Orange County and Sacramento, will stage “Solutions for America” rallies tomorrow, Monday, Feb. 4, in Stockton and San Francisco.

    The Stockton event will be at 2 p.m. in the University of the Pacific‘s Alex G. Spanos Arena — I wonder if that makes Spanos, a big GOP benefactor, break out in hives? — at 3601 Pacific Ave. Details of the San Francisco visit haven’t been rolled out yet; stay tuned.

    UPDATE @ 12:05 P.M. MONDAY: Former President Bill Clinton will attend a “Voices Across America” town hall hosted by Mayor Gavin Newsom at San Francisco’s Ferry Building, on the Embarcadero at Market Street; doors open at 4:30 p.m. At 6 p.m., Hillary Clinton will start a live national town hall, being broadcast from New York City on the Hallmark Channel; there also will be a real-time stream of the event on the campaign’s Web site.
