The debate is raging, and there’s plenty of evidence of the good and the bad of youth sports. Have youth sports become too competitive? Please post your comments on our discussion board item started by Times staff writer Peggy Spear.

There is a difference between competitivenes and selfishness. Competition is good, and should be used to develop character and teamwork. Too many times in youth sports, selfishness takes over in the form of over-zealous coaching and parenting. Too many see the win column as the only measure of success. They tend to ignore what is happening at the lowest level, between players on the field.
