NCS 4-A East Bay playoff picture

Locks: De La Salle (9-0), California (9-1, 5-1 EBAL), James Logan (10-0, 5-0 MVAL), San Leandro (8-2, 7-0 HAAL), Berkeley (5-3-1, 5-0-1), Pittsburg (5-4-5-1 BVAL)

Probables: none

Bubble teams: Amador Valley (6-4, 2-4 EBAL), Foothill (6-4, 3-3 EBAL), Monte Vista (7-3, 3-3 EBAL), Deer Valley (7-3, 5-2 BVAL)

My picks/seeding: 1. De La Salle; 2. James Logan; 3. California; 4. San Leandro; 5. Monte Vista; 6. Pittsburg; 7. Deer Valley; 8. Berkeley

My goodness. Talk about throwing a chink in the chain. Amador lost to Foothill and Monte Vista took care of San Ramon Valley to throw this whole thing in a loop. This is going to be a crazy NCS seeding meeting on Sunday. Let me try to break this down the best I can.

I think Amador is going to be out because of the loss to Granada and now to Foothill. I think Deer Valley will get in because of its strong overall record and 4-1 record against 4-A schools. I think Monte Vista, even though it lost to Amador head-to-head, will get the nod for beating Foothill, Granada and SRV _ all teams Amador couldn’t beat.

The other scenario I could see is Deer Valley being left out and Foothill and Monte Vista getting the nod. Amador still has a shot, but it is a long one. And the Dons only have one because of the win over Monte Vista.

NCS 3-A

Locks: San Ramon Valley (8-1-1, 5-1 EBAL); Newark Memorial (9-1, 5-1 MVAL);  Pinole Valley (8-1-1, 5-1-1 ACCAL); Alameda (7-3, 4-3 ACCAL); College Park (8-2, 7-2 DFAL).

Probables: American (6-4, 3-3 MVAL), Arroyo (6-4, 3-4 HAAL)

Bubble teams:  Tennyson (5-5, 3-4 HAAL); Washington (4-5-1, 4-2 MVAL); Clayton Valley (4-6, 3-4 BVAL).

My picks/seedings: 1. San Ramon Valley; 2. Newark Memorial; 3. Pinole Valley; 4. College Park; 5. Alameda; 6. Arroyo; 7. American; 8. Tennyson

This is another mess at the bottom. I changed my mind about Washington getting in over Tennyson. The two forfeit losses by Washington to Arroyo and Tennyson shouldn’t have been dished out if they aren’t going to count. So NCS should award Tennyson a spot because of its head-to-head win over Washington. I can still see Washington getting into the playoffs because it beat American and Tennyson being left out, but then what would be the point of handing out the forfeit win if it doesn’t really matter?

NCS 2-A

Locks: Las Lomas (10-0, 9-0 DFAL), Heritage (7-3, 5-2 BVAL), Bishop O’Dowd (7-2, 5-1 HAAL), Encinal (8-2, 6-1 ACCAL)

Probables: Piedmont (7-3, 5-1 BSAL), Acalanes (6-4, 6-3 DFAL), Campolindo (7-3, 6-3 DFAL)

Bubble teams: El Cerrito (5-5, 3-4 ACCAL), Miramonte (5-5, 4-5 DFAL), Northgate (5-5, 4-5 DFAL), Ygnacio Valley (6-4, 4-3 BVAL)

My picks/seedings: 1. Las Lomas; 2. Heritage; 3. Encinal; 4. Bishop O’Dowd; 5. Acalanes; 6. Campolindo; 7. Ygnacio Valley; 8. Piedmont.

Encinal’s win over Alameda mixed up the seedings a bit. I think Northgate’s loss to Alhambra will keep Piedmont and Ygnacio Valley in the playoffs. I feel pretty good about this one. O’Dowd plays on Saturday, but I don’t think a win or loss moves them from the No. 4 seed.

so mr. bower do you really see the rest of our season going down the tubes because of those forfeits. Does it not matter that they got demolished. i mean it wasnt even a close game. so if what your saying does actually happen then you have three teams in the playoffs we beat by over thrity points. i dont know , im not an expert on this stuff but that sounds pretty retarded to me.

  2. interested bystander Says:

You break the rules, you pay the consequenses!! Is Wahington good enough to be in the playoffs? No question about it, they would be a 3 or 4 seed without the ff’s. Do they deserve to be in the playoffs? No way!! NCS felt it necessary to hand out the punishment and that punishment needs to be observed in the post season as well. It sucks for the kids, but the program and the staff should know better to break the rules.

  3. FIVEONE Says:

how is is the coaches or any of our fault that some papers werent filled out right by some parents. i dont get you guys.

  4. interested bystander Says:

There is nothing to get. I don’t make the rules and I don’t lay down the law. CIF & NCS makes the rules and are the enforcers of these rules. No matter what the details of the infraction are, the NCS has decided a punishment was warranted. This punishment MUST be enforced through the entire season, which includes the post season. If the NCS lets Washington into the post season, it will show that breaking the rules only gives you a slap on the hand and what the punishment given is not really a punishment but just big ole smoke shield. Those ff’s HAVE to be considered losses and treated that way. Whatever happened in those games NEED to be (as they would say in court) inadmissable evidence. I personally have nothing at all against Washington, its coaching staff, or their school. I don’t know if the punishment was warranted or not, but because the punishment was given, it has to be enforced fully.

  5. eastbayscout Says:

Well a paperwork issue that wasn’t filled out, would probably not fall on the fault of the players and staff. So you punish 30 hard working kids that have done everything asked of them to get a shot at the playoffs. Destroying those 3 teams. Yet, we all say we are for the kids. It’s funny how when it comes down to crunch time we forget that fact. Not that Tennyson or Clayton Valley or whoever might get in over washington didnt work just as hard, but how about put the best teams on the field for playoffs, and keep all the crap out. The punishment was handed out 2 forfeit games, trying to figure how that says “You can’t go to playoffs then, because then why in the heck is Berkeley going to the playoffs then”. They flat our recruited which is in my book is cheating, yet they are going to the playoffs, nobody told them they couldnt go? Think about your arguments please before you start rushing to nonsense judgements.

Besides that, Washington beats American, American beats Tennyson, and Tennyson gets a forfeit win over washington (didn’t beat them). So its a 3 way triangle. Tie Breaker anyone? how about margin of victory 42 pts over American, American one point over Tennyson, and Tennyson with forfeit (2-0) 2 pts over Washington. Lets go further…Washington finishes 3rd in league behind 2 great teams, one spot ahead of American whom we are talking about putting in, and two spots ahead of Tennyson in the weaker than heck HAAL. Oh by the way the HAAL winner San Leandro lost to San Ramon 42-7 one week prior to Washington tieing SRV 35-35. San Leandro beat Tennyson 49-0. Please evaluate your arguments. Record is not a sole reason for getting in over another team as it was proving last year, when a 4-6 record got in over a 5-5 record. Washington finishes just a 1/2 game behind Tennyson in overall record, not much of a difference, and American just 1 1/2 games better. Please tell me one quality opponent Tennyson beat tied, or even played close? 34-6 arroyo, 49-0 SL, 21-54 Mt Eden, , 12-63 Bishop O’Dowd. Beat Castro Valley and Hayward, who won a combined 7 games all year. Oh and Beat mission 1-9, and San Lorenzo 0-10 plus a forfeit when lost 0-31. Yeah great choice for a playoff spot. If you can seriously argue against that please tell me, because either you are from Tennyson or have never watched a football game in your life. Might as well give SRV or NEWark the eventual #1 seed an automatic bye. The only thing that could be positive from the game is hopefully the #1 seed doesn’t lose any players to injury, because it would be shame to lose them in a 50-0 thrashing.

  6. mbower Says:

    Guys,

Washington is no doubt in my head a top 4 seed in the playoffs. I am not arguing that they aren’t better than both Arroyo and Tennyson. I think they are. However, I am talking about how the committee should see Washington’s record. They should see it as they lost to Tennyson and Arroyo. The committee shouldn’t just dismiss the forfeits. If Washington still gets in despite the forfeit losses, I think they must be seeded No. 7 and American No. 8. Arroyo should be the higher seed for the forfeit win. I would have no problem with that. But I would have a problem if Washington is seeded higher than Arroyo, because that tells me that NCS didn’t even take the forfeit into consideration. And if you’re not going to do that, then why even make the Huskies forfeit in the first place?

  7. mbower Says:

    FIVEONE,

I have no question in my head that you guys are the better team over Arroyo and Tennyson. I am simply basing my seeding on how the committee does its selection process. The selection process doesn’t always put in the best team. That’s just the way it is. They follow a criteria. I would say it is a coin flip between the Huskies and Tennyson to reach the playoffs. And you guys crushed Arroyo and Tennyson, but the committee has to see them as 2-0 losses and not 30-point wins. If the committee still feels you guys earned a spot over Tennyson despite it, then that is fine. And I could most certainly see that happening.

  8. Pops Says:

Weaker than heck HAAL? I have always been one of the few to defend the MVAL over the years from th constant disrespect (other than Logan) and generally being under-rated as a league. Don’t get carried away, Eatbayscout, I’ve seen a lot of games this year and fact is Bishop O’Dowd would beat Logan, Newark, and Washington .

  9. Yogi Says:

    Pops-
O’Dowd would lose by 4 touchdowns to Logan. Coming in with an argument like that totally blows any credibility you may have. Come on, get real

  10. rzamora Says:

whoa Pops, you’re fooling yourself especially with B.O.D. beating Logan, especially this year, now that’s total disrespect for the MVAL. For teams that are all eligible to make playoffs, one being considered #2 in NCS 4-A (below de la of course), another being considered right next to San Ramon Valley (either one would be seeded #1 in NCS 3-A), and washington who tied SRV and barely lost to newark. So if you’re saying that you could be those three teams, Logan, Newark, and Washington, you’d basically be saying that you’d beat every team in NCS besides de la, you guys didn’t even win your own league.

  11. Pops Says:

I am talking about right now. O’Dowd is a way better team than it was earlier-even 3,4 weeks ao. I have always thoght Logan would probably beat BOD by about 14-21 points until I saw them almost lose to Newark. O;Dowd would definitely beat Newark.
