I CAN’T even believe that CAL has to play Pittsburg on their field!!!!!
I didn’t read how the seedings are done, but I completely think your comment earlier on a higher seeding absolutely deserves the first game AT HOME!
What is this commitee thinking???
November 11th, 2007 at 12:31 pm
wow.. totally didn’t expect that. I was planning on going to san ramon to watch the pirates play the grizzlies.. Been a while since pittsburg has hosted a home playoff game..
November 11th, 2007 at 12:49 pm
that is soooo wrong berkeley is gonna be 8 and play de la but DEER VAlley is # 7 and we’re playing logan
Foothill isn’t in it with 4 losses neither is amador with 4 losses and we beat berkeley which gives us a higher bid cal plays at pitt because pitt won LEGUE
November 11th, 2007 at 12:56 pm
the commitee definately needs to rethink that rule that league champs gets the home game even if they are ranked lower. Cal high finished 9-1 with their lone loss to SRV by one point
Pittsburg finished 6-4 and are in the BVAL, which is a good league, but not nearley as good as the EBAL. The NCS commitee should change the rule next year so that higher seeds get a home play-off games, regardless of league champs.

Why is the #3 Seed Cal at Pittsburg and not at home?
November 11th, 2007 at 12:59 pm
Pittsburg won the BVAL title. League champions get home field over a higher seeded team unless that team got the automatic berth from its league. Cal didn’t get the automatic berth, it was San Ramon Valley in the EBAL.

Since Pittsburg won their league they get the home play-off game. Cal finished as co-champs
but didn’t get the automatic play-off birth because they lost to SRV. Since they didn’t get the automatic birth they aren’t reconized as league champs, therefore don’t get a home play-off game. It is a stupid rule and the commitee should consider changing the rule next year

They definately need to look at the rule considering Berkely won their league but yet they have to play DLS at their field - nothing is applied equally…

The Comittee is Not Fair how does 7-3 Monte Vista Get #4 Over 8-2 San Leandro#5 ?? That’s Crap. And How Does 6-4 Foothill who doesn’t win legue get ove 7-3 Deer Valley??? that’s crap The Comittee is Crap

Marq-
Why does it matter San Leandro is the No. 5 and Monte Vista is the No. 4? Even if it was swapped they would still play each other at SL, so it’s a moot point. Lets compare Foothill and Deer Valley based on common opponents:
Novato:
Foothill loses by 3
Deer Valley loses by 16
Berkeley:
Foothill wins by 23
Deer Valley wins by 6
Granada:
Foothill wins by 17
Deer Valley wins by 12
Three cases all indicate Foothill is better than Deer Valley. Overall record is great, but DV racked up their wins against 2-A Heritage, 1-9 Liberty, 4-6 Freedom, 2-A Ygnacio Valley, 4-6 Antioch, and 4-6 Clayton Valley. Are you telling me Foothill wouldn’t have beat those teams too?

The committee got it right this year. It came down to Foothill and DV for the last 4A spot and FHS gets that because they played a tougher schedule, even if they had one more overall loss. Look at the facts; FHS played four league champs and won twice. DV played three league champs and one once. FHS’ opponents had a better overall record by 10 or more wins while DV’s opponents were .500. FHS beat SJAA powerhouse Lincoln of Stockton and DV has no one like that on their schedule. Finally, when it came to common opponents FHS gets the nod there as well. DV beat Berkeley by 6 points and lost to Novato by two touchdowns while FHS beat Berkeley by more than 20 points and lost to Novato by 3 points with their JV sophomore quarterback with one weeks’ practice (who by the way did a great job). Contrary to DLS’ opinion, EBAL is a much stronger league than BVAL so the nod should go their way when things get close.

haha the rematch of almost the biggest upset last year, logan vs foothill, seeds and settings are swapped, this is going to be great.

so did Deer Valley get in or not to confusing on the comments , by the way why CAL doesn’t want to play Pitt at their Home (are they scared of something??) i’m sure PITT will welcome them with a mighty defense .

Cal got screwed out of a home play-off game, but they’ll whoop pitt at there own home anyway. With the grizzlie’s star quarterback Nick Spalliero back to full speed Cal will go into the game with all of their weapons back. Just because Cal doesn’t have a flashy star player like MV has in Mcalister, doesn’t mean their offense is weak either. Cal seems to try to power to ball with their running game behind Leroy Green and Nick Rosato. They can also throw the ball when they need to hiting Alex Spaliero ( Nick’ twin brother) and Nick Zwarg
Cal’s defense, led by LBs Rosato and Derek Geoting, will keep pirates RB Monte Davis in check. DL Schuyler Meeks and Osayaba Ona-Enagbare will keep constant pressure on Pittsburg QB Mario Hill, The two have a combined 9.5 sacks on the year. The Grizzlies secondary, Led by FS Alex Spalliero who has 8 or 9 picks on the year, will cover WR Justin Britton and the rest of the Pittsburg passing game. Cal is just to talented at to many positions. Cal will beat Pittsburg by 14

hey john- Spalliero Sucks! Stompro is better! And you can call McCallister a “flashy star player” but that doesn’t change the fact that the Mustangs offense has been very average this year compared to years past. Doesn’t matter though, because MV will have the last laugh when they return 8 junior starters on offense and i think like 6 on defense next year and hand Cal their own ass WITHOUT McCallister.
November 13th, 2007 at 12:14 am
Spalliero doesn’t suck, he and the rest of the Grizzlies kicked MV’s ass. McCallister was the heart and soul of the MV team this year, without him the mustangs would be lucky to finish 5-5 and average 250 yards a game. Don’t count Cal out next year. They do lose a lot of talent to graduation, but return a handful of key players. Stompro who is a great quarterback will return as will D-1 prospect Leroy Green. Cal will also return other important on offense and defense. Not to mention to JV class that is coming up next year. The Class of ‘10 has won the JV and frosh league titles both years and bring up great talent at the skill positions and on the line. Cal and MV will be the top 2 teams in the EBAL next year, but Cal will pull it out.

McCallister had his worst season yet statistically (despite the Mustangs still leading EBAL in offense)… and unless you play for monte vista (which im sure you dont) you have no way of knowing what is the “heart and soul” of that team. By the way… kicked ass? Cal was the better team, but it was only a 6 point game… and Monte Vista had the ball down to like the 3 yard line at one point. You are right in saying that stompro and green are excellent… but I credit that to the Cal offensive Line. Spalleiro is no better than stompro, ive seen both play. As for the EBAL situation next year… i don’t see Cal standing a chance against MV. Monte Vista has by far the most returning starters next year, and the rest of EBAL will be duking it for second, though i like San Ramon as the number 2, just because of southwick. Also let’s not forget Amador, who are also returning a large number of key players.

I agree with John, and so do many people on the matter of McCallister being a very large part of the Mustang’s offense. If you watch the Comcast On Demand Monte Vista vs. California game, the announcers even comment that Monte Vista is basically “McCallister and his support group…” in contrast to California which is more of a tight nit group of friends.
I think that Cal will come out on top because of their overall versatility. Stompro does indeed have a different style than Spalliero does. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing though. In fact, those contrasting styles of quarterbacking can be an advantage to Cal because it forces the Pittsburg Defense to respect both the pass and the run from multiple players. Granted Pittsburg does have a lot for other teams to fear from the “four headed monster” (I think that’s what some call them), but that’ll just come down to everyone on the Cal defense doing their job.
One thing you will notice though if you happen to catch their game vs. Heritage on Comcast On Demand, their one biggest weakness is their tendency to get lazy towards the end of the game.
