Boys hoops in full force this week

I have to say that I am very excited to be going to a boys basketball game tonight.

Newark Memorial at San Leandro at 7.

These two always hook up for some great games and tonight should be no different. I don’t think Pirates’ star junior Jared Cunningham will be playing tonight (ankle) but Chris Jones of Newark should be on the court. It will certainly be a great game to watch. My first taste of hoops action this year!

And there will be plenty of hoops action all week. Make sure you go out and check out some games. Washington is holding its annual tournament this week. The following teams will be in that tourney: Granada, Monte Vista, James Logan, Washington-Fremont, St. Joseph Notre Dame, Arroyo, Castro Valley and Mt. Eden.

James Logan plays Monte Vista at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday to kickoff a quadruple header. The tournament runs through Saturday. For a complete list of tournaments this week, just visit www.norcalprepscores.com

Let’s get the hoop chatter going. Early predictions and sleepers? I am boring and will take De La Salle to win the North Coast Section Division I title.

Will Castro Valley ever beat Bishop O’Dowd in vars. boy’s hoops? Embarrassing that a much bigger school has never beaten the small school.

When you take a look at O’Dowd’s history (12 NCS titles since 1979), I wouldn’t call it embarrassing to struggle against the Dragons. But certainly, you’ll see a day where Castro Valley beats O’Dowd. Look at what Tennyson did a couple years ago under Tom Costello when they swept the season series, including a blowout win at the Dragon Dome. Castro Valley is always competitive, so don’t be surprised if they beat O’Dowd in the next couple of years.

Jimmy – it’s Tom Costello — Tony is the older brother at LPC now…Tom is at Dublin

It’s also a lot easier to field a good bball team at a small school than football.

Thank D-mill. You know I knew that. That what happens when you worked in Hayward when Tom the bomb was at Tennyson and Tony was at Chabot.

I just seen Castro Valley tonight and I have to think they have a really good chance at beating BOD this year. CV can shoot the jumper as usual and run the floor. But the key is this new inside game they have going. That is what they were lacking last year. But they might have something going this year. Anyway, Castro Valley plays Monte Vista Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Washington. I expect The Trojans to cruise to a win in this one, especially since the Mustangs aren’t playing with their complete team.
