Castro Valley boys hoops makes school history

The Castro Valley High boys basketball team defeated defending Hayward Area Athletic League champion Bishop O’Dowd for the first time in school history Wednesday night.

The Trojans are alone at the top of the league standings and are hoping to capture their first league title since 1987-88. I was very impressed with Castro Valley and will probably vote them at the No. 3 spot in the East Bay poll, which will be out on Tuesday for all of those wondering. McClymonds and De La Salle should take up the first two spots.

The Trojans are an amazing story. Four starters from last year’s 22-win squad graduated and they have a new coach, but that hasn’t gotten them off task. Point guard DJ Broome is the lone returner, and his old-school, unselfish style is exciting to watch. The whole team is very exciting and I am expecting them to go deep into the playoffs.

Castro Valley was packed for the game. The Trojans’ Den or the Sixth-man Club really brought it tonight. That Trojans’ Den means a lot to the players. They always mention them during interviews. Great job, guys. Better line up early for the next game at Bishop O’Dowd.

The 3 seeds looking pretty good fo CV… i guess we gotta hope De La or Mac slips so we couls move up, but the trojans are playing some exciting basketball right now!! 12-1

If you’re talking NCS seeds, remembering Mack isn’t in NCS. The OAL teams go straight from the Oakland Section playoffs to NorCals. If you’re talking about our poll, which by the way will debut Tuesday, Jan. 8, right now it’s going to be hard for CV to move above undefeated St. Mary’s and undefeated Kennedy-Richmond, both 14-0 and coming off tournament wins, who incidentally face each other on Jan. 8 in a what should be a fun Bay Shore Athletic League game. Mack also plays Castlemont that day to open up OAL play.

I was referring to the subject above reguarding the placement of the voting, but your right with the fact that both teams are having strong years. But…. in my opinion St. Mary’s really hasnt played a tough scheduele their toughest opponents being Miramonte (9-2) and Castlemont (10-4)… i dont know Kennedys situation as specifically, although i hear they are very strong… But, Jan. 8 should be action packed with some good games and we will find out who is for real.

I guess I should’ve read Mike’s whole post. I didn’t even see he had mentioned the poll and that it was finally coming out Tuesday. Sorry. As for St. Mary’s schedule, I don’t know much about the teams they played down in San Diego other than Amador Valley, and they rolled them by 19 in the title game. Plus, their average margin of victory is 29.7 points. That spells dominance. The only close game they’ve had was Castlemont, and don’t sleep on the Knights, they are a good team. When they get a couple players back (if it’s not too late), watch out. As for Kennedy, their next two games (tonight vs. Salesian, Tuesday vs. St. Mary’s) will be telling. Another team you can’t forget about in the top 5 in Newark Memorial. Their only loss to a Bay Area team came to Mitty (heard of them?). As of right now, I slot at least Mack, DLS, St. Mary’s, Newark and Kennedy ahead of CV, but that’s just me.

Jimmy, Tough loss for Kennedy… u still slotting them ahead of CV???

  • Jimmy Durkin

yeah, it was. I’m going to have to take a second look and probably do some rearranging.

I played on the ’87-’88 team at CV, which was the last time we won the HAAL. We haven’t always been a basketball powerhouse like Hayward or O’Dowd, so it’s great to see the team playing so well (and ranked high). I hope they continue win! And it’s a great story considering the circumstances with the coaching change.

Yes, Castro Valley is a huge story around here. The team graduated four starters and got a new coach and are doing this! Nick Jones is doing a great job leading this group and the arrival of Jourdan DeMuynck has been awesome. Are you going to get out to the game tonight, Steve?

You should. Davion Berry of Hayward and Jourdan DeMuynck of Castro Valley should be a great matchup.
