The Castro Valley High boys basketball team defeated defending Hayward Area Athletic League champion Bishop O’Dowd for the first time in school history Wednesday night.
The Trojans are alone at the top of the league standings and are hoping to capture their first league title since 1987-88. I was very impressed with Castro Valley and will probably vote them at the No. 3 spot in the East Bay poll, which will be out on Tuesday for all of those wondering. McClymonds and De La Salle should take up the first two spots.
The Trojans are an amazing story. Four starters from last year’s 22-win squad graduated and they have a new coach, but that hasn’t gotten them off task. Point guard DJ Broome is the lone returner, and his old-school, unselfish style is exciting to watch. The whole team is very exciting and I am expecting them to go deep into the playoffs.
Castro Valley was packed for the game. The Trojans’ Den or the Sixth-man Club really brought it tonight. That Trojans’ Den means a lot to the players. They always mention them during interviews. Great job, guys. Better line up early for the next game at Bishop O’Dowd.
