Boys Basketball East Bay Super Poll
Team                            Record             Pts       Last week        Comment

1. McClymonds (14)    20-0                 210          1                   Warriors are idle, rumor is they moved up in this poll during off week

2. De La Salle              16-2                 193          2                   Spartans got a couple of those No. 2 votes back, still not all of them

3. St. Mary’s                22-1                 185          3                  In many other years, Panthers would occupy top spot, just not this year

4. San Leandro 14-3                 167          5                  Win over previous No. 4 Castro Valley earn shares of first in HAAL and the No. 4 spot in poll

5. Castro Valley           18-2                 150          4                  Admirable effort on the road against SL without star, but those in the know, know CV should have two losses to Pirates

6. Monte Vista             16-4                 139          6                  I personally have these guys ranked No. 12, still not sure about the strength of the EBAL in hoops

7. Oakland                   15-6                 117          8                  Move up a spot while idle as OAL takes week off for finals, play No. 13 Skyline on Wednesday

8. Kennedy-Rich.         18-3                 105          7                  Again take lead into fourth against St. Mary’s only to lose to No. 3 Panthers

9. Berkeley                   11-7                 86            11                I predicted about three weeks ago that they’d eventually be a top-10 team, I guess I know what I’m talking about

10. Newark Memorial  17-5                 82            10                Bounce back from loss to Skyline at MLK to win twice in MVAL

11. Salesian                  17-4                 79             9                 Knew it’d be hard for young team to keep rolling, but 86-58 to St. Mary’s was a bit rough

12. Miramonte              17-2                 56            12               All they do is keep winning, have won 8 straight now

13. Skyline                   13-7                 48            13               Tough week as they return to OAL play, host Oakland on Wednesday, travel to face Mack on Friday

14. Foothill                   15-5                 26            14               I still haven’t thrown the Falcons a vote this year and 19-point loss to Monte Vista makes me question why they’re still ranked

15. James Logan          18-5                 14             15              Not a whole lot of great wins (except Skyline when the Titans were down) but they continue to rack up the W’s

Others receiving votes: Pittsburg (15-4) 12, Campolindo (12-6) 7, El Cerrito (12-5) 3, Fremont-Oakland (13-7) 1.

    jimmy,

a win is a win and a loss is a loss… CV really should have 2 wins against SL, i think u have it backwards…

  • Michael Bower

    Shane,

I believe Durkin is referring to the 1 extra point that CV got at the end of the fourth quarter of the first game between SL and CV.

The official scorer and scoreboard keeper screwed up toward the end of regulation in that game and gave CV an extra point. CV of course then tied it in regulation and won in overtime. There was like 1:50 left in the game when it happend. I caught it but the official book had the score as it was on the scoreboard.

However, a couple sources that shot video of the game, confirmed to me that an extra point was given to CV in regulation of the first game. And no, not both sources are from SL.

Anyway, CV earned the win in OT. The final minute or so of regulation would have played out different if the score was correct. CV could have still tied it, but we will never know.

  • Jimmy Durkin

Yup Shane, what Bower said is exactly what I’m referring to. That’s been one of the reasons I’ve been leery of ranking CV too high all year since the end of that game wasn’t played out fairly. And no, I’m not calling out CV and saying they intentionally cheated. I understand it was an honest mistake. And yes, the final two minutes probably would’ve played out differently if they knew they were losing. But still, the fact is: a mistake by their own scorekeeper (and by the officials for not double-checking everything) helped them get a win.

Ok i thought you said they should have lost the game on an account of play… i understand now…

Anyways, Bower im digging that 6th MAN clubs article in the Cheap seats…

  • Michael Bower

The Cheap Seats loves the sixth-man clubs!

  • Coach Mike

    WOW!!!!
History repeats itself. Two years ago same thing happened, when Tennyson Visited CV. It’s weird that the same guy is still doing the book. Video also showed that the extra point should not have been granted. Just imagine THS wouldn’t have then lost in OT, finished 13-3 instead of 12-4 and be Co_Champs. hey it happens just weird that it happened at the same school with the same scorekeeper. memories..

  • Hercules fan

Give me a break, where is Hercules? They beat El Cerrito and just beat Berkeley!

  • http://renee.jesse@yahoo.com renee

THE HERCULES TITANS HAVE PLAYED A VERY TOUGH SCHEDULE AND HAVE DOWN EXCEPTIONAL CONSIDERING THEY HAD ONLY WON 5 GAMES IN TWO YEARS. IN ONE WEEK , THEY BEAT BOTH BERKELEY AND EL CERRITO EASILY AND SHOULD NOT HAVE LOST TO BERKELEY THE FIRST TIME. EVERY TEAM HAS A BAD DAY AND SOME HAVE MORE, BUT I FEEL IT IS NOT AT ALL FAIR TO DISMISS THESE KIDS WHOM HAVE WORKED SO HARD AND NOT GET MENTIONED EVEN ONCE IN YOUR POLL. THEY HAVE A PLAYER NAMED JORDAN WHOM CAN GUARD ANY POSITION ON THE FLOOR. PLEASE TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT WHAT IS GOING ON IN HERCULES , BECAUSE LATER THE ENTIRE STATE WILL KNOW WHAT THEY ARE ALL ABOUT . AND IT WILL BE HARD TO GET AN INTERVIEW AT THAT POINT. THE COACHES NEED TO HAVE THEIR NAMES MENTIONED AS WELL TO HAVE DONE THE UNTHINKABLE WITH THE SAME GROUP OF KIDS THAT HAVE ALWAYS BEEN IN THE SCHOOL, NO OUTSIDE TRANSFERS, PERIOD, JUST OLD FASHION HARDWORK AND DETERIMINATION.

  • Jimmy Durkin

Renee, nobody’s dismissing Hercules. I haven’t seen anybody say anything bad about them. Our poll comes out each Tuesday (we release it Monday on the blog). As of this poll you see posted, Hercules hadn’t beaten El Cerrito or Berkeley. As of this poll, Hercules was 11-7 and coming off a loss to Encinal and didn’t have a win over any team receiving votes in our poll, which didn’t exactly make them poll-worthy. With these two wins, I’m sure they’ll garner some votes. Everybody needs to remember that we only do a poll each week, so when upsets happen, it takes until the following week for that to get reflected in the poll. Also, remember that the East Bay is one of the most competitive areas around in basketball and this is a particularly deep season, so there are plenty of good teams that don’t quite make our rankings.
