We have learned and are writing a story to run tomorrow in the paper, that long time Foothill coach Matt Sweeney will return to guide the Falcons. John Mannion, who did a wonderful job in his one year coaching the team, made the decision to step down so as to make room for Sweeney to return.

Mannion will remain on the staff and as Sweeney said, “He will be a co-head coach as far as I am concerned.”

Congrats to Mannion for guiding the Falcons to the playoffs in his first year running the show,  and welcome back to Sweeney.

 More later…

he’s coming back because foothill lost to california, san ramon valley, and monte vista in league during the same season for the first time in a long time. it used to be foothill who were traditional league champions, this is the first time cal and san ramon have hung the banner in 20+ years. sweeney wants to put foothill back on the map and not lose in the first round of the playoffs either. anybody remember the last time the falcons went 6-5? i think amador should have had a shot at james logan, because they upset mv and as srv knows anything happens in your rivalry game. im not saying cal “won” league as much as san ramon lost sole possesion. if cal did truly win league they would have beat srv and played against their rivals. which is something i doubt the grizzlies will ever be able to say for many reasons. they are 0-5 now against srv since 2003 and dont have the intensity of a crosstown rivaly last game of the season. however if sweeney is even thinking about beating de la salle, i doubt his team will be able to do it with a junior quarterback and mostly new starters everywhere a la joe southwick who almost blew it against cardinal newman when srv faced their best competition all season. but who knows i hope someone does beat dls next year and im confident every team will give it their best shot. good luck to livermore with their new coach, the cowboys and granada have done well lately in their nonleague games. but every EBAL team will have to bring their A-game ie. use all of their weapons and exploit spartan weaknesses/mistakes

my prediction for EBAL next year:
    1. De la salle 7-0
    2. Monte Vista 6-1
    3. San Ramon Valley 5-2
    4. California 4-3
    5. Foothill 4-3
    6. Amador Valley 2-5
    7. Livermore 2-5
    8. Granada 1-6

John Mannion is a good friend and a class act for stepping aside for Sweeney. With the two of them coaching side by side it will bring back those glory days of old. If any coach in the EBAL can figure out how to beat DLS, it’s Sweeney! It might not happen this year but it eventually will. I’d just like to say, welcome back Matt, let the legacy continue!!
