Running Updates

9:41: Alright, we’ll I’m going to check out now. I have a 6 a.m. flight to spring training to catch.

9:34: Taft High has been upset by MLK-Riverside, 83-82 in overtime! King will now play Dominguez, which also needed overtime to beat Fairfax. The winner will play the winner of DLS-Mack for the D-I state title.

9:32: All of the NorCal boys scores are in. It’s going to look like this at Arco: D1: McClymonds vs De La Salle; D2: Mitty vs Fairfield; D3: Sacread Heart vs Sacramento; D4 St. Mary’s vs Modesto Christian; D5: Branson vs Lick Wilmerding (NCS rematch)

9:25: De La Salle got it done in extra time, winning 49-45.

9:18: From Southern California, Mater Dei has beaten Mission Hills 83-54 and is one win away from a return to the D-II state title game. It will play Edison of Fresno, which beat Hoover.

9:14: Drake Green scores a putpack for Oakland with 2.2 seconds left to send it to overtime with De La Salle. For those of you doing the math, it was a 6 to 6 fourth quarter.

8:54: De La Salle and Oakland are all tied up. It’s 35-35 headed into the final quarter.

8:52: McClymonds is officially back in the NorCal final, it defeated Newark, 62-42, and we will now wait to see if it’s an MLK rematch vs DLS or if Oakland will get another crack at Mack Daddy.

8:49: Word out of Modesto is that D.J. Seeley scored 43 points to lead Modesto to the NorCal final with a 87-72 win. A fantastic season for Kennedy comes to an end. But as the saying goes, there are very few teams who end their season with a win and Kennedy has a lot to be proud about. The St. Mary’s-Berkeley vs. Modesto Christian game is a can’t miss.

8:43: It’s all but over in Hayward. Mack has opened up a 15-point lead, 55-40 as Otis and Powell both have 16 points.

8:40: The St. Mary’s-Miramonte game is in the books. Final score: St. Mary’s 70, Miramonte 50. Congrats to Miramonte on a great season … and for keeping it close for awhile.

8:35: Berkeley has officially won, 50-38.

8:34: De La Salle leads Oakland 24-22 at the half. Jose Rivera (DLS) has 11 points, Damian Lillard (O) has 15. Marcus Alridge has 6 rebounds for Oakland.

8:27: Frank Otis took control in the third, scoring 7 points (14 in game) and Mack now leads 42-33 after three.

8:25: With 3:51 left, St. Mary’s is up 66-44. Courtney French has knocked down five 3s for St. Mary’s and has 20 points.

8:23: The DLS game is underway and the Spartans took a 14-9 lead after the first quarter.

8:19: We tracked down the Berkeley-San Benito score, the ‘Jackets have this one locked up and are going the the NorCal finals. It’s 48-33 with 3 minutes left.

8:12: At the end of three, St. Mary’s leads Miramonte 53-32. It was a 27-13 quarter for St. Mary’s and bad news for Mats fans, Ashlee Burns fouled out with 1:23 left in third quarter …

8:06: It’s now 29-23 McClymons at the half from Hayward, where Chris Jones is struggling. He’s got just 2 points for the Cougars. Down just six without a good showing from Jones could mean a lot of things. When he gets going the team can score at will, looking forward to the second half …

8:02: With 2:39 third quarter, St. Mary’s-Stockton has found its stride. It’s now 47-26 after they’ve connected on four 3s in the quarter. In the finals we’ll see St. Mary’s vs Sacred Heart, which are widely considered the two teams in the state regardless of division and two of the nation’s best. Some are saying the California D-III NorCal girls championship might as well be the national championship.

7:56: After a quarter from the University formerly known as Hayward State, McClymonds leads Newark 18-15. Damon Powell has been on the ooping end of two alley-oops, courtesy of Sims and Hill. Powell has 8 points, Frank Otis 6. Keon Sankey has 10 points for Newark.

7:45: Just did a little research on St. Mary’s-Stockton. The team is averaging 84.8 points per game this year and came in with a 32-0 record and is ranked No. 9 in the nation by USA Today. Its lowest point total of the year came in a 52-44 win against Brea Olinda in the championship game of the West Coast Jamboree on New Year’s Eve. Since then the team hasn’t been held below 72.

7:40: From Stockton, we have St. Mary’s up 26-19 at the half. Miramonte took a 9-8 lead a minute into the second quarter, but then St. Mary’s went on a 9-2 run. Ashlee Burns has seven points and two steals for Miramonte.

7:25: The word from Durkin is that they have postponed the start of the McClymonds/Newark Memorial game due to a long line at the door. We’re looking at a 7:30 start at best now.

7:21: At the end of the first quarter from Stockton, we have St. Mary’s leading Miramonte 8-7. James Leonard is there and said that Miramonte didn’t even attemt a shot until midway through the quarter. Chelsea Gray (St. Mary’s) got into a some foul trouble, and with her on the bench the Mats closed the gap.

6:10 p.m.: Our first blog item of the night comes from Jimmy Durkin, who has a bone to pick with Cal State East Bay, which is hosting tonight’s game between McClymonds and Newark Memorial. Whoever is in charge of figuring out the parking situation didn’t really think it through … They are charging $3 to park, but they’re not doing it at the lot entrances. Parking passes are being sold at the gym door. A little extra exercise never hurt anyone, but come on, that makes no sense … everyone is being forced to park, walk to the gym, buy a parking ticket, walk back to their cars to put the ticket in their cars, then walk back to buy a game ticket before entering. Hopefully the night will improve.

Ha, Waterhouse must be loving that parking pass I gave him.

  2. Ned Says:

What a great service this is! Thanks a lot. Sounds like St. Mary’s is as quick as advertised, if Miramonte only has 19 at halftime.

  3. Big Red Says:

What in the world did Ashmore do tonight? Why did he decide to play a zone? Thats freakin ridiculous…bad coaching tonight…..

  4. Will Whelan Says:

I will not publicly state my opinions on Ashmore’s coaching, but it can be inferred.

My predictions were nearly spot on tonight. DLS wins by 4 (I had them at 5), Sac HI by 10 (I had them at 7) and Mack by 20 was the furthest of my predictions (I had 12).

SHC beating EC isn’t a surprise. They have as much talent 1-5 of any school in Norcal. Sac beat them earlier though and should win again.

  5. Jimmy Durkin Says:

    Big Red,
Ashmore’s coaching had nothing to do with Newark losing. In fact, the zone defense often times had Mack stagnant and befuttled and they struggled to generate a consistent flow of getting the ball down low to Otis and Powell. What killed Newark was rebounding. Mack has not been a great rebounding team this season (yes, surprising give the talent of Otis and Powell). Teams that have outworked them on the boards have given them fits. That proved to be Newark’s downfall, certainly not the zone defense. Think about it, are you actually suggesting Newark try to match up man-to-man with the guys Mack throws out there? It would’ve gotten lopsided a lot earlier.

  6. David Schoen Says:

Newark’s defense wasn’t as bad as the officiating. Brutal all the way around.

  7. High School Sports Junkie Says:

I am a Newark High Grad and have followed them for years and I refuse to sit here and whine about bad officiating. That is so weak. I just hate it when fans do that Newark lost because Mack is a better team than them…….

  8. Jimmy Durkin Says:

Amen Junkie!! Newark’s a great team, but there’s no shame getting worked over by Mack. That’s the No. 14 team in the nation (according to USA Today). Mack’s on a different level than any other NorCal team. Newark did a very commendable job to stay within striking distance for the game’s first 28 minutes despite getting dominated on the boards. But hey, Mack was the better team coming in and that proved to be true.

  9. Kyle Bonagura Says:

Jimmy are you sure you don’t want to say Mack and Mitty are on another level than every NorCal team?

  10. Jimmy Durkin Says:

Yeah, my comment was directed at D-1 teams, but if we’re talking overall, I’ll say Mack and Mitty are on a different level.

  11. Big Red Says:

If you look at the scores for the first half it was 23-29 when Newark was playing Man to man….I personally would have pressured the ball full court….soon as he got into the zone they started scoring with ease……..thats why i said the zone wasnt needed……
