9:29: This one is now over. 76-56 Mitty. Chiverton led all with 26, Gordon with 20. Lake had 23 for Fairfield . That’s all she wrote for me. I’m going to head back home. Hope everyone enjoyed this.
9:26: Word from down south is Long Beach Poly took care of Narbonne 60-47 and will oppose Berkeley in the girls Division I title game Saturday at 6 p.m. St. Pat’s will face La Jolla Country Day in the girls D-IV finals Friday at 3:30 p.m. Mater Dei beat Eidson so that’s who the Mitty boys will face next week after they finish off this win. In the D-IV boys, St. Mary’s will take on Campbell Hall. Still waiting for a final on the D-I boys SoCal game between Dominguez and King. Those are the local interest games, but I guess I can post the other matchups we know of. Boys D-III: Sacramento vs. Santa Margarita. Boys D-V: Branson vs. Renaissance Academy. Girls D-II: Mitty vs. Mira Costa, Girls D-III: Sacred Heart Cathedral vs. Magnolia, Girls D-V: Branson vs. Mission Prep.
9:22: Chiverton pours in a trey. Caloiaro scores now. 72-51 and this one is officially in garbage time. I’ll hook you up with the final score shortly.
9:20: Hurd bucket and foul, misses the FT but Lake tips in. 67-51.
9:18: Gordon with a nice spin move inside to score, 65-47. Gordon with a putback. Lead is back to 20 at 67-47. There’s a timeout with 4:57 left.
9:16: Lake goes 1 of 2 at the line. 58-44. Chiverton drains a 3 and that may be the dagger, it’s 61-44. But wait, Lake hits a trey for Fairfield, 61-47. Still not quite over. But Gordon with a putback makes it 63-47.
9:13: A free throw for Mitty’s Scott, his second make wiped out due to lane violation and the third quarter ends with Mitty in front 58-43.
9:10: Lake hits two FTs, 53-40. Adams with a tip in for Mitty, but a 3 by Lake makes it 55-43 now. Lake has 17 for Fairfield. Adams at the line for Mitty, makes both. 57-43.
9:07: A free throw for Fairfield’s Hurd and it’s 50-38. Gordon finally answers the Fairfield charge by throwing in a hook shot and getting fouled. The free throw is good and it’s 53-38 Mitty.
9:05: Well, Fairfield is starting to make a charge. They’ve cut it to 50-35. A steal and dunk by Fairfield’s Lake makes it 50-37 now. Hmmm, this could become a game.
9:03: OK, I think I’m officially the only one here on Prep Corner. I’m gonna start packing. I’ll still get a final on here, but unless it gets interesting here, there won’t be many updates. Right now Mitty leads 50-32 with 4:02 left in the third.
9:00: Is anybody following along here? Haven’t seen many comments. Let me know if you’re here. I need some company.
8:57: The second half of this laugher has started. I’m ready to go home but I’ll stick it out here to get you a final. I’m closing in on 12 hours here courtside. I first sat down at 9:27 a.m. By the way, 45-25 is our score here.
8:51: Should be getting a final or an update soon from the St. Mary’s-Modesto game. Wow! I’m a psychic. Here’s our finals, St. Mary’s wins 82-70 to advance to the state title game on Friday. My grandpa will be a very happy man. He’s a St. Mary’s grad, class of 1942.
8:47: Nothing to talk about in this Mitty-Fairfield game. Mitty is rolling. I want to talk about the East Bay though. If St. Mary’s holds on, that’s a perfect sweep for East Bay teams with Mack, Berkeley and St. Mary’s winning. Throw in the almost-East Bay St. Patrick-St. Vincent team and that’s one heckuva performance by the locals. I guess I’ll be busy next weekend.
8:45: Halftime here. 45-23. St. Mary’s still up 10 with 2:17 left. It’s 76-66.
8:42: Not much new to report. No scoring. No excitement. This game was considered the main event by the CIF? Don’t know about that. Oh boy, we’ve got an update from Folsom. St. Mary’s has taken charge, leading 72-62 with 3:53 left. It’s 43-25 here with 14.3 left till halftime.
8:39: Lake drives for two for Fairfield and is fouled. Misses the free-throw. 39-17. After a Mitty TO, Lake scores again, 39-19. Mitty goes back down and feeds Gordon, who powers over Lake for a dunk. Brandon Scott then adds a layup for Mitty. Timeout Fairfield with 2:02 left in the second and its 43-19. I’m guessing this one is just about over.
8:37: Lasley at the line for 1 and 1. Makes both, 35-15 Mitty. Chiverton FT line jumper, 37-15. Chiverton has a game-high 12 on the night. Baseline jumper now for Chiv, he’s got 14 and its’ 39-15.
8:35: Back here we have Chiverton following his miss with a hoop, 35-13 with 4:06 left.
8:33: Another update from Folsom from Chace Bryson, St. Mary’s and Modesto are tied at 59 after 3.
8:32: Another Mitty hoop makes it 33-13. I don’t see a 20-point comeback in the works.
8:30: Way at the line for Mitty and he hits both. 29-13. Not that Fairfield had much hope coming in of winning, but their hopes are quickly fading. Andoh now at the line for two. He hits both and it’s 31-13 with 5:53 left.
8:28: Easy bucket inside for Gordon, 25-13. Gordon again with a turnaround to make it 27-13.
8:25: End of the first quarter here and it’s 23-13 still with Mitty on top.
8:23: Hurd makes 1 of 2 for Fairfield. 20-13. 3-pointer for Mitty’s Way, it’s 23-13.
8:21: Wow, after missing a shot on the offensive end, Gordon gets back on D big time with a swat from behind. He looks pretty healthy to me. Two free throws by Dickson make it 20-12. Look up for latest St. Mary’s-Modesto score.
8:19: Gordon putbacks a miss inside by slamming it home, then gets a block on the other end and the feed goes to Chiverton for a slam. Mitty up 20-10 with 2:30 left in the first.
8:17: A trey for Chiverton answered by a jumper by Dixon and it’s 16-10 Mitty with 3:02 left.
8:15: Hurd scores inside, now Gordon gets his name in the scoring book with a bucket inside. Got an update from over at Folsom High, Modesto now leads 39-35. Seely with 12 for Modesto, Chis Brew has 14 for St. Mary’s. In this game, we have a dunk by Dickson for Fairfield and a bucket inside for Adams. 13-8 Mitty.
8:13: Fairfield on the board. Lake scored on a putback. 5-2. Now Adams scores inside for Mitty. Chiverton gets a steal, but called for a charging foul. Hurd drives the lane for Fairfield. 7-4. Steal by Lake, but gets too fancy with the ball handling and the Falcons turn it over. Endoch now scores inside, 9-4. With 5:06 left in the first, we have our first Drew Gordon appearance.
8:11: Tip won by Fairfield, but Mitty takes the first lead as Chiverton hits a trey. 3-0 Monarchs. Chiverton feeds Andoch inside. 5-0.
8:09: Since I’m alone here, I might not be able to do much in the way of replying to comments, but I’ll try. At halftime, I’ll definitely try to answer any questions.
8:07: Starting lineups — Fairfield — James Lake (6-2, F), Keith Welch (5-11, G), Josh Lasley (6-0, G), John Dickson (6-5, F), Tevin hurd (6-5, F). Mitty — John Adams (6-6, F), Angelo Caloiara (6-7, G), Jay Way (6-0, G), Enoch Andoh (6-8, C), Collin Chiverton (6-6, G). Drwe Gordan isn’t starting for Mitty, but he will see action. How much, we don’t know? It’ll probably depend on how much they need him.
7:55: Durkin here. Pounded out my McClymonds-De La Salle gamer and am ready to bring you the action from Mitty vs. Fairfield.
7:48 p.m.: Alright, I will be handing the blog over to Jimmy Durkin now. He is going to finish up his gamer and then pickup the action from this game. We just got an update. St. Mary’s is leading Modesto Christian 22-13 after the first quarter. That is the D-IV boys game.
Division III girls: Sacred Heart Cathedral 46, St. Mary’s-Stockton 45
7:36 p.m.: Well, that was a classic game. Great job by both teams. Congrats to Sacred Heart Cathedral.
7:35 p.m.: The crowd is on its feet. Inbounds deep and it is complete to St. Mary’s Afure Jemerigbe. She drives to the hoop and is contested for a layup and it misses!! The clock runs out and the Irish storm the court. Scared Heart holds on and wins the NorCal title!! WOW…Final is 46-45 Sacred Heart Cathedral…What a game!
7:33 p.m.: Wow!!! A nice pass by the Irish’s Moore down low to Tierra Rogers for a layup with 6 seconds left and the Irish take the lead!! It is 46-45 with 3.8 seconds to go. Wow! Amazing! The Rams have the ball down by one with 3.8 second to go and the full length of the court to go!!
7:31 p.m.: Moreno misses the free throw and the Irish’s Moore grabs the rebound and races the other way. She drives in and loses the ball. It goes back to St. Mary’s. Now a mad scramble and it goes out off the Rams. Wow, Irish ball down by 1 with 17.3 to go!! Time out.
7:30 p.m.: St. Mary’s inbounds the ball and a steal by the Irish’s Moore and she goes the other way for a layup, but Alle Moreno takes the charge!!! St. Mary’s ball! Wow!! A quick foul by the Irish on Moreno with 28.6 to go. Rams lead 45-44.
7:28 p.m.: The Rams go to inbound the ball but everyone is covered by the Irish and the Rams use a timeout. Rams ball and up 1 with 38.1 to go.
7:27 p.m.: A near steal by the Irish’s Ki-shawna Moore, but she tried to save the ball before it rolled out and it goes right to a Rams player. Time out Irish. The Rams are up 45-44 with 38.1 to go. The Irish are in the double-bonus and the Rams are in the bonus.
7:26 p.m.: Wow! Nice drive by the Rams’ Chelsea Gray to give the Rams the lead. 45-44 Rams now with 1:07 to go. Steal by the Rams. They slow it up. Under a minute to go!!
7:25 p.m.: And we have a timeout called by St. Mary’s. The Rams are trailing by one after being up for most of this game. It is 44-43 Irish with just 1:36 to go. This is some good stuff. Smart move by CIF to make this the 7 p.m. game.
7:24 p.m.: Wow, Irish runs the shot clock down to one and fires up a shot and then the ball clangs off the rim and out of bounds, but was last touched by the Rams. Irish can drain some more clock now. 1:59 to go, Irish up by 1.
7:24 p.m.: Steal by the Irish’s Ki-shawna Moore and she goes coast-to-coast for the layup and the lead! Irish up 44-43 now with 2:48 to go. And an airball by the Rams. Irish ball.
7:21 p.m.: Nice move by the Rams’ Afure Jemerigbe again! She drives by her defender and gets the layup. It is 43-40 Rams. The other way, the Irish miss a 3-pointer but there is Jazmine Jackson again on the boards. She gets fouled on the putback and buries her first free throw. She makes the second and the Rams’ lead is only 1 _ 43-42 with 3:50 to go.
7:16 p.m.: Wow! A little razzle dazzle by the Rams’ Chelsea Gray and she beats her defender to the rim and gets the layup. But back the other way it is Jazmine Jackson again to the rack, getting a layup and fouled. She misses the free throw but gets a loose ball under the rim and is fouled again on the putback. She will go to the line again _ this time for two shots. She makes the first. And the second is good. It is 41-37 Rams now. This one is close. Irish steal and WOW!! A huge 3-pointer by the Irish’s Ashley Boggs!! That erupts the crowd and a time out Rams. Rams up just one now, 41-40, with 4:57 to go.
7:14 p.m.: Moreno puts back her own miss for the Rams and it is 39-31 St. Mary’s now. Moreno is only a sophomore. That was an incredible effort. The Rams only have two seniors. They are loaded up for next year as well. Meanwhile, the Irish’s Jazmine Jackson is at the line. She makes the first free throw and the second. It is now 39-33 Rams with 5:50 to go.
7:15 p.m.: The Irish’s Tierra Rogers keeps it close. Getting a putback of her own miss. It is 37-31 Rams now with 6:20 to go.
7:11 p.m.: Wow! A nice alley-oop from the Rams Chelsea Gray to Afure Jemerigbe, who lays it in. But quickly the other way it is the Irish’s Ki-shawna Moore completing a three-point play. It is 37-29 St. Mary’s with 7:30 to go.
7:10 p.m.: The Rams’ Alle Moreno takes it to the hoop now and gets a floater. And another missed 3-pointer by the Irish, but Tierra Rogers is there for the putback. The third quarter is over. It is 35-26 Rams.
7:08 p.m.: The Rams’ Afure Jemerigbe is having an easy time getting to the rim. This time she is fouled and goes to the line. She makes the first. She makes the second and it is 33-24 Rams. The biggest lead of the game. As the Irish go down and miss a couple more shots.
7:05 p.m.: Just got the info. Congrats to St. Pat for avenging its NCS D-IV loss to Justin Siena with a 65-60 overtime victory. Back here it is 31-24 Rams right now. Sorry, missed some action while I was getting the updates. But we will pick it back up now. 1:26 left in the third quarter.
7:02 p.m.: The Rams’ Alle Moreno got fouled and is at the line. She gets the first one to go. And swishes the second. It is 29-24 Rams with 2:44 left in the third quarter.
7 p.m.: There goes a 3-ball for the Rams. It was Afure Jemerigbe to give the Rams a 27-24 lead. The Irish try to answer but clang a 3-pointer. The Rams get the ball back and there is a trap by the Irish and a steal. Irish the other way and missed another 3-pointer. Tough shooting night for the Irish thus far.
6:59 p.m.: The teams just exchanged missed shot and it is 24-22 still with 4:20 to go. …But there is a jumper by the Irish’s Tierra Rogers to make it all tied up at 24 with 4 minutes in the third quarter.
6:58 p.m.: The Irish’s Jazmine Jackson drives the lane and is fouled. She will shoot two free throws. She makes the first and the second to make it a two-point game. It is 24-22 Rams.

But there is a basket for the Irish and then a steal by Ki-shawna Moore and a bucket. Another steal and a bucket..wow! Rams answer with a layup. My fingers can’t keep up! It is 24-20 Rams now with 5:38 to go in the third.
6:53 p.m.: I just was handed the miserable shooting numbers. St. Mary’s is shooting 31 percent from the field and Sacred Heart Cathedral is at a 20 percent clip. Ouch. Second half is about to begin.
6:44 p.m.: The first half comes to a close with St. Mary’s leading 20-14. It has been a pretty ugly shooting half, but the Rams have found success driving to the rim.
6:42 p.m.: Another missed 3-pointer by the Irish and St. Mary’s gets a quick layup the other way. It is now 20-12 Rams. Here comes the Irish. Tierra Rogers is fouled and will shoot one-on-one. She misses and St. Mary’s gets the rebound. A steal by Rogers cuts the deficit to 20-14 with 30 seconds to go before the half.
6:40 p.m.: St. Mary’s is on a little run. Annissa Garcia got a putback to make it 16-12 Rams. And now she is at the free throw line. She buries the first one. And knocks down the second, it is 18-12 Rams with 1:35 to go before the half.
6:38 p.m.: And there goes a 3-ball, finally. It is the Rams’ Emily Gonsalves from the corner to make it 14-11 Rams with 2:21 to go in the first half. But the Irish’s Ki-Shawna Moore is at the line. She misses the first and makes the second. It is 14-12 Rams now. The Rams’ Afure Jemerigbe picked up her third foul on that series.
6:36 p.m.: We got an update from Bryson out at the D-IV girls game between St. Pats and Justin Siena. It is all tied up at 52 and going to OT!
6:34 p.m.: This time it is the Rams Cortney French driving and getting fouled. She will go to the line. She makes both and the tempo of the game is starting to pick up. It is 11-9 Rams. 6:31 p.m.: The Rams’ Afure Jemerigbe drives to the lane and is fouled. She will go to the line with 6:08 to go in the first half. She makes the first one, as the Rams are now in the bonus with the next foul. She misses the second and it is 9-8 Irish…A Runner in the lane is missed by the Irish and the Rams’ Chelsea Gray drives the lane again to give the Rams a 10-9 lead with 5:36 to go in the first half.

6:25 p.m.: Gray to the lane again for the Rams and she gets tied up while going up for the shot. A jump ball is called with 3.7 to go and the Rams keep the ball. A 3-pointer by Gray at the buzzer is no good. It is 7-5 Irish at the end of the first quarter.
6:22 p.m.: Chelsea Gray, a 5-11 guard for the Rams, just drove the lane and got fouled. She will shoot two. The first one goes in and out. She rattles the second one in and it is now 7-5 Irish with 33 seconds left.
6:21 p.m.: Both teams have gone cold from the field. It remains 7-4 Irish with 1:16 left in the first quarter. Remember, Sacred Heart is ranked No. 1 in the country and St. Mary’s is No. 3.
6:20 p.m.: We got another update on the girls division IV norcal title game. It is 50-45 Justin Siena with 4:40 to go. Back here it is still 7-3 Irish with 2:15 to go.
6:18 p.m.: The Irish are playing some solid defense right now. The Rams have used the whole shot clock twice down the floor now and have turned it over both times. The Irish miss a 3-pointer and the Rams have the ball. Irish is in a man-defense and there is a five-second call. Nice pressure defense on the Rams’ guards.
6:15 p.m. The Rams are still having a tough go of it out of the time out. A charging foul called on the Rams and the Irish are back the other way. Wow! Monster block by the Rams’ Afure Jemerigbe. 6:10 p.m.: An offensive board for the Irish leads to a 3-pointer by Jazmine Jackson and it is 5-0, Sacred Heart. But a bucket the other way makes it 5-2 now.
6:09 p.m.: And we are off here and a quick two points for Sacred Heart Cathedral (the Fightin’ Irish) on a layup.
6:01 p.m.: Moments before tipoff for this one but we just got an update from Bryson out at Folsom High. Justin Siena girls lead St. Patrick-St.Vincent 32-26 at the half of the Division IV NorCal title game. Alex Cowling sat with three fouls for most of the second quarter, but has 9 points for St. Pats. 2:43 p.m.: Wong to the rack! She gets the layup. Nice drive. And the St. Francis fans are going nuts. It is 15-14 St. Francis now. Mitty misses a long 3-pointer and the ball goes back to St. Francis.
2:41 p.m.: This game could come down to who tires out first. This has been at a rapid pace from the start. Mitty’s Stephens drives and gets an open look for her teammate but she misses and St. Francis’ Brittney Wong goes the other way and pops a 3-pointer. It is 14-13 Mitty with 5:09 to go in the half.
2:39 p.m.: A couple of missed shots on both ends as the score remains 12-10 Mitty. St. Francis shows a little full-court pressure and Stephens burns them then dishes to Lindsay Leo for an easy layup. 14-10 Mitty with 6:20 to go.
2:37 p.m.: St. Francis gets the ball to start the second quarter. And Elizabeth Gordon for Mitty blocks a shot. She is having a nice game in the middle. Gordon is a 6-foot-1 sophomore center. She plays beyond her year, that’s for sure. Timeout Mitty. 12-10 Mitty with 7:34 left in the first half.
2:35 p.m.: St. Francis is forced to shoot a 3-pointer against the zone of Mitty. The shot clangs off the rim and Mitty gets the board but misses a shot and here comes St. Francis on the break…an easy layup for Melia Duncan right before the buzzer makes it 12-10. Mitty is leading after one quarter.
2:32 p.m.: St. Francis gets the ball to Dominique Blanchette who gets fouled. She just threw up an airball on her first attempt from the line. She clangs the second one and it is still 8-8 with under 2 minutes to go. Mitty is having a tough time getting the ball inside right now. Another short shot missed by Mitty’s Elizabeth Gordon is there for the putback. 10-8 Mitty and it just got a steal. Ashley Watson takes it coast-to-coast and is fouled. She will shoot two with 1:12 left in the first quarter. She makes the first one and the second, 12-8 Mitty.
2:31 p.m.: This game is going at a blazing pace. Can’t really tell who is getting the best of it right now. But maybe that is why it is 8-8.
2:29 p.m.: A full-length inbounds pass catches St. Francis napping and Mitty’s Hannah Stephens (probably will be reading that name a lot) gets the layup to put Mitty up 8-7, but St. Francis’ Marissa Mar is at the line. She misses the first. She makes the second and it is 8-8 with 2:33 left in the first quarter.
2:27 p.m.: A monster block by St. Francis’ Melia Duncan erupts the crowd. A missed 3-pointer by Mitty and here comes St. Francis again. The Troubadours don’t waste any time getting the ball down low. A runner in the lane misses and then a 3-point shot misses. Mitty gets the rebound down by 3 with 3:20 left in the first quarter. …. scratch that, a layup by Stephanie Ricketts cuts the deficit to 1 with 3 minutes to go.
2:25 p.m.: A couple of missed layups by Mitty and here comes St. Francis. The Mitty coach is asking for a foul as Mitty misses another short shot. It is 7-4 with 4:19 to go in the first quarter and Mitty has the ball.
2:24 p.m.: Mitty’s Lindsay Leo goes to the line. She misses the first and the second and here come St. Francis. The Troubadours are keeping this game at an up-and-down pace. Right away Camille Anderson drives the length of the floor and gets fouled. She will go to the line now. She misses the first. Makes the second to give St. Francis a 7-4 lead with 5:20 to go in the first quarter.
2:23 p.m.: Steal by St. Francis’ Ariel Gregersen. She drives the length of the court and dishes to Brittney Wong for a layup and it is 4-4. Another steal by St. Francis and Melia Duncan gets hammered going for a layup. She will go to the line. Buries the first one. And makes the second to pull St. Francis ahead 6-4 with 5:37 left in the first quarter.
2:22 p.m.: A 3-pointer missed by the Troubadours’ Brittney Wong and Mitty rebounds, but is called for travling. Ball back to the Troubadours.
2:20 p.m.: And we are off. St. Francis wins the jump ball and misses a runner in the lane. Here comes Mitty the other way. Mitty pulls it out and then gets it in to Hannah Stephens, who gets the layup and a 2-0 lead for the Monarchs with 7:15 to go. … And there is a bucket for St. Francis, but immediately the other way Classye James gets a layup for Mitty and it is 4-2 Monarchs with 6:44 to go in the first quarter.
2:15 p.m.: We are moments away from tipoff. The players are just finishing up being announced. St. Francis has a nice little cheering section going behind the basket. Probably the biggest crowd for one team that we have seen today.
1:56: We just had an appearance from Kevin Johnson, who recently announced he will be running for mayor in the city of Sacramento. Meanwhile, we have about 10 minutes before the sart of the next game. The people are starting to pour into the arena now as our Division I boys game between McClymonds and De La Salle is creeping up. That game will follow this one. Be back in 10 minutes. We are a little behind schedule here at Arco.
Division III boys: Sacramento 66, Sacred Heart Cathedral 49
And that will do it for Hoose. I’ll turn over reigns to Michael Bower as he prepares to blog the next game, Division II girls Archbishop Mitty vs. St. Francis (Sacramento).
1:45: It’s over, 66-49 Sac wins! Congrats and good luck in the State Division III Championship game next week.
1:41: Tapley with a two-hand slam to put Sac up 65-49 with 11:3 left.
1:35: It’s all but over now. Sac has a 62-47 lead with 1:13 left.
1:30: Richard Lai (SHC) hits a 3-pointer and Sac’s lead is down to 57-42 with 3:08 left.
1:22: “Run the clock, run the clock. Let’s run some clock,” Sac coach Derek Swafford. 55-37, 501 left
1:18: Sac’s Henderson with two FTs Sa cup 49-32 with 6:17.
1:16: Sac is slowing the pace (for some stupid reason). The coach wants to run clock, play for a good shot. That’s dumb. Sac should continue to run the floor, SHC can’t hang. 45-30, 7;04 left.
1:11: End of 3rd. Sac up 43-30.
1:01: The calls are getting frequent. cheap fouls on Sac. And now an and-one foul. Five straight fouls on Sac. SHC cuts lead to 37-29. (Garrett for Sac. fouled out)
12:58: Tapley with a fast break layup and SHC’s Hubbard with a 3-pointer. Sac’s Robert Garrett makes two FTs and Sac leads 35-26. SHC’s Greene (lefty) makes 1 of 2 FT and cuts lead to 35-27
12:55 Denzel Pruitt (Sac with a layup plus the foul, but missed the FT) 31-26.
12:55: Sac playing sloppy and a couple of calls going against it. SHC’s Brown with a layin and lead is down to 29-23
Halftime stats: Sac: Tapley 8 pts, 3 assists, 4 rebounds. Kyle Allen 9 pts, 6 rebounds. SHC: Brown 9 points. Sac is shooting 41.7 percent from the field (10-for-24). SHC is shooting 24.1 percent (7-for-29).
12:43: Sac losing some steam, probably getting bored. Up 29-20 at the half.
12:40: Sac coach Derek Swaffors is mad at PG Mike Henderson for not running a fast break right “trying to be a hero,” he said. Sac up 29-18 (1:05 left in the second quarter).
12:35: 2:59 left, Sac up 28-16
12:33: Sac is just on a whole different level than SHC. Sac hit a funk and only scored two points over the last couple of minutes. 26-11. Meanwhile, the only player doing anything for SHC is Jerry Brown, who hits another 3 and Sac leads 26-14.
12:30: Jerry Brown is the only players for SHC doing any scoring. A layup cuts the lead to 19-8. … Then an dunk by Bobby Evans (6-8) for a 21-8 lead. Sac on the run again, Kyle Allen with a fast-break layup adn the foul. Sac up 24-8 with 6:33 left.
Derek Swafford “gotta close this thing out” — Sac coach
12:25: Jerry Brown hits a 3 for SHC and cuts lead to 19-6. And that’s the end of the first quarter. This Sac team is big, fast, athletic … impressive. Doubt SHC can hang with this for three more quarters.
12:20: SHC is having trouble with Sac’s defense. Turnovers leading to bucket after bucket. Another fast break layup off a turnover and Sac has a 19-3 lead.
12:19: Tapley is a 6-3 guard, with speed, quickness and is very athletic
12:18: Tapley with a fast-break dunk. 11-2 Sac
12:17: Sac coach Derek Swafford is fired up as his team goes up 9-2.
12:15: Hubbard with the fast break layup. 2-0 SHC. Travon Abraham with one of two free throws, 2-1 SHC. Sac Tapley with a steal and drive and layup, 3-2 Sac leads. Sac’s Tapley with another steal, drive and was fouled. Goes 2-2 from the line and leads 5-2.
Sac has a stingy defense, cutting off passing lanes and knocking balls loose.
12:10: Sac with man defense. SHC pressure defense. Still scoreless
11:50: Hoose is in the house. This is a battle of Cinderella teams as SHC advanced to the NorCal finals as the No. 6 seed and upset No. 1 El Camino 72-67 in the semifinals. Sac defeated No. 7 seed and beat No. 2 Archbishop Riordan in the semis 59-49.
Division I Girls: Berkeley 72, Kennedy-Sacramento 53
11:46: OK, that’s all she wrote for this game. We’ll turn it over to Hoose for our next contest. My next duties will be covering the Mack-De La Salle game and I’ll probably be bloggig the final game of the night — Mitty vs. Fairfield.
11:44: I’ve got some final totals, not the full totals yet though. Perkins with 28 and 12 rebounds, Rosen with 18 points, Warren with 16 points, Culberson had 6 points and I think I overheard she had 8 rebounds. Shamizu led Kennedy with 14, Khlok had 13 and Kinsey had 11.
11:40: Awards are being handed out now. Perkins was given the sportsmanship award for Berkeley. She deserves and MVP award after this game. Wow! I’m still waiting on final stats to wrap this thing up, then I’ll be handing over blog duties to Steve “Hoose” Waterhouse for the next game, the Division III finals between Sacramento and Sacred Heart Cathedral — who do you think will get the crowd support here at Arco?
11:36: Well, this one is in the books. Perkins wrapped up a stellar game by draining a 3-pointer at the buzzer and our final is 72-53. Perkins finishes with a game-high 28. We’ll have full stats later. We’re now getting prepared for the awards ceremony.
11:34: Hamasaki gets the inbound and she is fouled. She’ll go to the line looking for her first points of the game. The first FT is good, so is the second one. It’s 68-53. A steal by Warren at the other end and Kennedy is done. Coach Yung is telling his team not to foul, yet Perkins gets fouled with 18 seconds left. Khlok has fouled out for Kennedy. Perkins makes the first and in come the reserves for Berkeley. Ariel Brosha, Pickett, Morgan and Peach Nipitnorasate. Perkins misses the second and it’s 69-53.
11:32: A Shimizu miss goes out of bounds to Berkeley. Kennedy calls time, trailing 66-53 with 39.9 left. I think we can officially say that Berkeley is heading back to the state championship game.
11:31: Going to take a miracle now for Kennedy. Leong miss, Culberson rebound. Under a minute to go and Perkins is fouled. Heading to the line to shoot 1-and-1. The first goes in, the second misses. But a rebound by Warren and she’s fouled. She’s at the line with Berkeley up 65-53 with 51.5 left. Warren makes the first, misses the second. 66-53.
11:29: Berkeley gets the ball back with a block and Rosen drives for two. 54-53. Khlok misses on a drive, Culberson rebound. Berkeley trying to slow it down now. Charging foul on Warren with 1:17 left.
11:27: A 3 pointer rattles in for Leong. It’s single digits now at 62-53 and the crowd is starting to feel it for the hometown Cougars. A traveling call on Berkeley gives it back to Kennedy and Berkeley calls time with 2:16 left.
11:24: Shimizu now at the line for Kennedy. By the way, Perkins has 24, Warren has 15, Rosen with 14. Shimizu makes both and now has 11. Rosen drives for two, give her 16 now as Berkeley leads 62-47 with under 3 minutes to go. A Shimizu 3 makes it 62-50. She has 14 now. Timeout Kennedy with 2:53 left.
11:22: Culberson, the fab freshman for Berkeley, with a strong putback off a Perkins miss. 56-43. Now some nifty passing and Warren scores inside off a Rosen dish. Shamizu responds with a jumper in the key. 58-45. Now Perkins is at the line with 3:34 left. She’s shooting 1-and-1, makes the first, makes the second. It’s 60-45.
11:20: Khlok drives and scores. 54-41. A reboun d by Leong on the other end for Kennedy and then she’s fouled by Perkins, heading to the line for 1-and-1. Nine team fouls for Berkeley. Leong makes both and it’s 54-43 with under 5 to play.
11:17: Shimizu at the line and makes a pair to bring it to 50-37 with under 7 minutes to go. A miss by Perkins, but Kennedy turns it over on the other end. That hurts for the Cougars. Ball back to Berkeley and Warren scores inside to make it 52-37. A Shimizu miss is rebounded by Culberson and after the outlet, Perkins scores inside. Transition back to the other end and Khlok scores. It’s 54-39 Berkeley. Time out Kennedy 5:41 left.
11:15: Shimizu rattles in a 3 and it’s 46-35. Commendable job by Kennedy to make this a ball game again. Berkeley is still in control, but it’s not over yet. Warren follows her own miss inside and its 48-35. Berkeley gets a steal and Rosen scores to make it 50-35. Good response there by Berkeley to regain the momentum.
11:13: Shimizu drives and scores and Perkins misses a desperation 3. End of the third quarter and its a 46-32 contest.
11:11: Kinsey heads to the line as Perkins gets called for her second foul. Kinsey makes 1 of 2. It’s 44-30. Rosen returns for Pickett after a brief rest and now Rosen is at the line. Bower and Waterhouse just got some food and it smells good. After this game, I think I’ll go eat. Bower has nachos, Hoose has chicken strips and fries. Rosen makes them both. 46-30.
11:09: Khlok at the line for the Cougars with 1:02 left. Makes the first and the second. It’s 44-29. We have Christina Pickett checking in for her first minutes for Berkeley.
11:07: After a timeout, we have Hamasaki feeding Rosen for a layup. Perkins heads to the center table to check back in. Now a drive and score by Shimizu to make it 44-27. Perkins waits for a stoppage to return. We now have that stoppage and Perkins is back.
11:04: Perkins was just nearby my courtside seat to inbound and seemed to be holding her hamstring, trying to flex it and seems to be in some minor pain. She’s doing the same as Rosen stands at the FT line. We’ll see if she’s OK. She just told Draper she’ll play on her tippy toes. Now she hobbles off as Hamasaki comes in. Rosen makes both as Perkins is getting stretched out by a trainer. It’s 42-25.
11:02: Some good hustle by Matsuoka for Kennedy gets her to the line. She chased down a ball that was going to be a backcourt violation and was fouled while going up. She makes the first FT, then makes the second. It’s 40-25 wtih about 3 minutes left.
11:00: Wallace in for Hamasaki. Kinsey off the inbound scores inside and is fouled by Rosen. The free throw rims out, Culberson rebound. It’s 38-21. Off a Kennedy TO, Warren feeds Culberson for a layup to make it 40-21. Khlok adds a baseline jumper and it’s 40-23.
10:58: Perkins with a jumper off a miss, 36-19. Now a Perkins rebound on the defensive end but a Berkeley miss goes out of bounds to Kennedy. Perkins is definitely the MVP of this game so far. She may already have a double-double. On cue, she hits a jumper. It’s 38-19 with 4:30 left in the third.
10:56: Perkins then answers with a trey, Kinsey replies with a jumper. 34-17 Berkeley. A nice feed from Kinsey leads to a Khlok bucket inside. It’s 34-19 and Berkeley coach Cheryl Draper calls time with 6:02 left in the third.
10:54: Second half has started. Kinsey is fouled and at the line. She misses the first, makes the second. 31-13. Khlok now hits a baseline jumper and it’s 31-15. The gap is narrowing … kinda.
10:50: Just got handed halftime stats. Let’s run them down. Perkins leads all with 12 points and 8 rebounds. Warren has 9 points and five rebounds, Rosen has 6 points and 6 rebounds. Culberson and Wallace each have 2. Warren also has 3 blocks and Culberson has 2. For Kennedy, Kinsey leads with 5, Leong and Ishii have 3 and Khlok has 1.
10:46: We’ve got people out on the court trying to make half-court shots. All but one person embarrassed themselves on the first try. But we had two rim out on the second try. Now they’ve moved it up to the NBA 3-point line and we’ve got a guy that swished it through. He wins a FedEx prize! Woo-hoo! Does he get some free shipping, or just a lame hat? I’m guessing a lame hat. Check that, it looks like he got a shirt.
10:43: Khlok drives the lane and is fouled, shooting two. Misses the first and the second. Still 31-12. Hamasaki returns for Berkeley. A loose ball foul on Kennedy with :28 left. Berkeley to inbound. They miss about four shots on that possession and we’ll go into halftime with the top-seeded Yellowjackets leading 31-12. Wow. I guess I didn’t give Berkeley enough credit by picking them to win by 5. Actually, it was more me trying to give Kennedy some due for making in this far. But not a good first half for them. We’ll see if they can pick it up in the second half.
10:40: In the final minute of the first half here. Rosen misses inside, but gets her own board. A Warren miss, but Wallace gets the ball and is fouled. She’ll shoot two with 39.1 left. Makes the first, and the second. 31-12.
10:38: Ishii hits a jumper for Kennedy. 29-12 now. A little lull here for Berkeley, but still a wide margin.
10:36: Taylor Wallace enters for Berkeley, Sharonda Morgan also in the game for the ‘Jackets. A Berkeley steal and Perkins drive for a layup but MISSES. Wow! I believe that’s her first miss. I don’t think it’ll cost them though.
10:34: Warren at the line, hits 1 of 2. Berkeley up 27-7. Perkins gets the rebound off the FT miss, feeds Warren for a bucket. 29-7. Kennedy’s Leong drains a 3, Kennedy has hit double digits, it’s 29-10.
10:33: Another interesting first quarter stat. Berkeley shot 10 of 15, Kennedy shot 0 of 14. Wowsers!
10:31: Warren blocks Kinsey inside. Kinsey is showing some frustration, the ref had to go give her a brief pep talk. Kimi Nakamura replaces her. Kennedy coach Brandon Yung tells her she has to keep her head.
10:30: Jumper for Kinsey. Kennedy starting to get its legs back underneath itself, but still a 24-7 game. Now Warren scores inside off a Rosen feed. Berkeley up 26-7.
10:28: Kennedy has its first field goal. Kinsey with a bucket and a foul. At the line, she converts the three-point play. It’s 22-5. But Perkins answers with a jumper. 24-5. 12 for Perkins on 6-for-6 shooting.
10:27: Kennedy may finally score again. A loose ball picked up by Ishii. She misses the layup, but is fouled. Makes the first, misses the second. It’s 22-2. First quarter stats: Perkins with 10 points, 4 rebounds. Wow! Rosen 6 points, 4 rebounds. Warren has 4 and 4.
10:24: First quarter comes to an end and this is already ugly. Berkeley holds a 22-1 lead. The looks on the Cougars faces says it all. This is not what they were expecting on this stage.
10:22: Another Kennedy TO, another Perkins hoops. Then another TO, Perkins feeds Rosen. It’s 20-1. Perkins with a long rebound. Now after a Rosen miss, Perkins drains a jumper. 22-1. Can we say: This one’s over?
10:21: Chairese making her big brother Eric proud. After her score, she gets a block at the other end and it leads to a Perkins layup. Timeout Kennedy with Berkeley leading 16-1 with 1:57 left in the first quarter.
10:20: Steal by Rosen, goes in for an easy layup. 10-1 Berkeley. This could get ugly in Kennedy doesn’t pick it up quick. Off a TO, Perkins pops a jumper. It’s 12-1 Berkeley. Wow, they are off to a good start. Culberson drops in a bucket inside off a Rosen feed. 14-1.
10:17: Kirsten Shimizu enters for Kennedy, replacing Ishii. Rosen with a putback off a Warren miss. 8-1 Berkeley. Turnover Kennedy, Berkeley pushing the ball up. A miss goes out of bounds, Kennedy ball. 30 second time out for Berkeley.
10:15: Wow, these rims must be rock hard because shots keep rolling out. Warren works inside and gets fouled. She’s at the line shooting two. Makes the first, makes the second. It’s 6-1.
10:13: Both teams are struggling with their shots to start. This is a much bigger stage than most are used to. Throw in the 10 a.m. start and it’s to be expected. Berkeley gets the first hoop of the day. A 10-foot jumper by Warren. Khlok at the line for Kennedy, make 1 of 2. It’s 2-1 Berkeley. Now Rosen drives the court and lays in it. 4-1.
10:11: And we have tip off, it’s won by Kennedy, but a quick steal by Berkeley. A TO by Berkeley now, Kennedy ball.
10:09: We have our starting lineups. For Kennedy, it’s Cyndi Matsuoka, Leslie Leong, Krystal Ishii, Deja Kinsey and Melody Khlok. For Berkeley, its Camila Rosen, Chairese Culberson, Jazmine Perkins, Airika Warren and Tiffany Hamasaki.
10:05: We just had the anthem sung. Well done by the young lady. The lineups are being announced. We’ll be underway in just a couple of minutes.
9:57: Our first game of the day is top-seeded Berkeley vs. the hometown team Kennedy. Berkeley brings a 29-3 record into the game, Kennedy is 27-6. Berkeley beat Skyline 68-32 and San Benito 50-38 to reach this game. Kennedy beat Carlmont 76-54 and Castlemont 52-49 to get here. I like Berkeley to win this one by 5, but the hometown advantage could definitely help Kennedy. Captain are wrapping up their meeting now. The anthem and lineups should be coming soon.

March 8th, 2008 at 10:14 am
i brought doughnuts
March 8th, 2008 at 10:18 am
my guess is berkeley wins by 20, unless it calls of the dogs in the second half
March 8th, 2008 at 10:18 am
And I am eating the doughnuts. For a team from Sacramento playing on the court, there sure isn’t that many people here.
March 8th, 2008 at 10:18 am
Yea, I got Berkeley by 15 at this rate.
March 8th, 2008 at 10:20 am
kennedy might not score another point this quarter
March 8th, 2008 at 10:21 am
and the route is on, 16-1 1:57 left in first
March 8th, 2008 at 10:21 am
over/under on kennedy points is 6 for the game
March 8th, 2008 at 10:22 am
You know she is!
March 8th, 2008 at 10:23 am
And you can put that one on the boooooooooard, yeah!
March 8th, 2008 at 10:25 am
geez, this is unbelievable. 22-1 !
March 8th, 2008 at 11:13 am
the nachos are outstanding! Might try the chicken strips tonight.
March 8th, 2008 at 11:21 am
How dumb was having the D-1 game at 4:00 I mean we have 1 vs 2 DLS Mack classic and its at 4! No game is more interesting outside of the SM vs. SHC girls game. CIF really screwed it up. And how do you think the attendance would have been if these games were played at the Oracle?
March 8th, 2008 at 11:26 am
Oh man, I could only imagine how packed the house would be for Mack if it were at Oracle. It would insane. I don’t know what’s up with making the D-1 not the highlight game. Mack-DLS is about as good as you can get. The only reason I don’t mind too much is it makes it easy with my deadline to write a good story, but still, it’s not in the best interest of hoops fans.
March 8th, 2008 at 11:27 am
what channels is DLS-Mack on in New york? is it in HD?
March 8th, 2008 at 11:28 am
wow. Single digits now. Now I realize how Kennedy got to this game. They do all the little things right. They need to box out in order to have a chance here. Berkeley is killing Kennedy on the offensive boards.
March 8th, 2008 at 11:30 am
What’s going on is Berkely making dumb TO, allowing thier opponent back in?
March 8th, 2008 at 11:30 am
I’m guessing they decided to showcase Mitty and Drew Gordon, especially because a Mitty-Mater Dei showdown is looming. I find it more curious that the D1 girls game would be buried at 10 a.m., especially with a local Sacramento team involved.
Hey Eric … guess we know who got the athletic genes in the Culberson family, huh?
March 8th, 2008 at 11:32 am
Berkeley wasn’t taking care of the ball very well, but this game is in hand now. Berkeley won it down the stretch on the offensive boards.
March 8th, 2008 at 11:32 am
LOL!!!!!
March 8th, 2008 at 11:33 am
WOW way to go Jackets! Baby Sis going to state as a freshman thats big, but she is a CULBERSON!
March 8th, 2008 at 11:36 am
In defense of the 4 p.m. start, it means that the media coverage of the game should be great. If it was at 8 p.m., everyone would be fighting deadline.
March 8th, 2008 at 11:37 am
It’s ova. Kennedy made a nice game of it, but Berkeley had too much firepower inside. Congrats. Berkeley will meet the winner of Long Beach Poly-Narbonne. That game will be played tonight at 6 at the LA Sports Arena.
March 8th, 2008 at 11:43 am
You guys do a great job…keep it up all day please!
Eric…..wouldn’t it have been great if “Baby Sis” was at MACK???
March 8th, 2008 at 11:46 am
I’ll take SHC in the upset. A bunch of those kids are from Oakland and we all know about East Bay hoops.
March 8th, 2008 at 11:57 am
Does anybody there know what the enrollment breakdowns are for each division? I would love to know what division Mack would play in if the Oakland Section didn’t automatically receive two bids to Division I.
Imagine a Mack-Branson Division V final.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
They would be a four
March 8th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
This game seems like it is going to come down to the wire. I think Sacramento is going to win this one because of its size. But so far it looks like a pretty evenly matched game.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:18 pm
Yeah she would have looked better in Orange and Black but I could not convinced my parents!
March 8th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
Tense moments on press row. A loose ball came flying towards us and two Sac players nearly crashed into the table right by us. I went to protect my computer, Hoose went to protect his food and even barked at one player to stay away from his food.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
Oh, even better! They take out Modesto Christian in the semis and then play St. Mary’s in the final!!
Man, I miss the old days when you could petition up. That was the best. Mater Dei in Division I. Modesto Christian played up. Bishop O’Dowd always did with Phelps. That one year St. Mary’s played Oakland Tech at Cal State was unreal. Pitino was there!
Everyone went up except Compton Dominguez. It always stayed in D2 for some reason. Lame.
CIF should create a Super Division that any team can petition into regardless of your enrollment. They do that Pac-5 Division in the Southern Section for football, but this would be even better. And it would quiet some of the public school-private school debate about athletics.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
Sacramento is just running sacred heart into the ground. These guys play with the intensity of their coach, Derek Swafford. He is animated and entertaining. Love his coaching style.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
We’ve got a Sacramento Monarchs sighting. Oh wait, no that’s the Archbishop Mitty Monarchs girls basketball team that just entered the building. They’ve got some serious size on that team.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
I agree with that xtower. They should allow every team to petition up and have one super division. Then the teams that don’t get into the super division just go back into their respective division.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
19-3?? Yikes. I guess that’s a sign I should go do my homework.
Whatever you do, don’t mess with the Hoose’s nachos!
March 8th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
Tell Emmy when I become the Oakland Section commissioner that’s going to be my first order of business!
OK, I gotta do some school stuff so I can come back at 4 p.m. And by the way, Jimmy, please bring me back a double-double from the In-N-Out on Truxel. heh heh
March 8th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
XTower, as mentioned earlier, Hoose has chicken strips and fries. Let’s be accurate here! ha ha!
Double-double, eh? We’ll see.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Xtower, Greene is the only one from Oakland. I think JB’s dad moved to Richmond, but I’m not sure. JB was supposed to go to St. Mary’s Berkeley.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
One interesting note about these two teams. Fremont-Oakland played both these teams in its first three games of the season. It lost 76-71 to Sacramento to open the season, then beat Sacred Heart Cathedral 77-75. Told you how good Fremont was!
March 8th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
How is slowing the game down stupid? Sac is up 15 and needs to chew up clock. If you guys did any research, all 4 loses have come due to losing 10+ points in the 4th Quarter. Watch any basketball game and you will see teams do the same thing.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Because SHC can’t score! Sac could have built up a 25-plus point lead and then cruise.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Unknown,
You got us working a 12-hour shift to blog from all these games here at Arco and you’re going to call us out for not doing our research on Sac High? C’mon man! We’re hooking all those who aren’t here up with the up to the minute info.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Unknown,
In this case you’re wrong. Sacramento has no kind of half-court offense working, but when running absolutely kill SHC. Sometimes you go for the kill and not the prevent defense. This run-the-clock offense is why SHC is back in this game. Sacramento keeps turning it over.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
I feel a little schizo - scroll to bottom of page to see comments (why, you might ask) and then a marathon back up to the top to see how the game is coming along. Really, I’m just jealous about the donuts
March 8th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
How does Sac lose this game? Turnovers and allowing SHC to score in transition and hit 3s. Its not about blowing a team out. Its about getting to a State Championship. Thats what has happened in the past 5 years and why Sac hasn’t won a state title. They havent been smart. This year is different!
March 8th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
I like to know how SHC is back in the game down 15 with 90 sec left with the ball….
March 8th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Doesn’t matter. This one is all but over.
Queenbee,
sorry about the marathon scroll, but we like to keep the conversation down here all in one post. Helps people follow a little better. I will save a donut for ya! ha
March 8th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
That may be the case in the past. But I can tell you one thing for sure, in this game they should have continued to push, force the issue. In the open court, with transition baskets, SHC can’t keep up.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Unknown,
Just be happy your team is going to the state title game.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Really, it’s just about winning. Just saying Sacramento had no chance of losing this game at a running pace. Doesn’t matter. It’s gonna be a win for Sacramento.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
I know, but I was at the first meeting between the two squads at Modesto Christian, and Sac had a 15+ lead in the 3rd and only won by 2. Same at Campolindo 20+ lead with 5 min left, won by 3. Lost to Reno 15+ lead. Lost to Etiwanda after 10 point lead in 4th. All because they “tried to be heros” and blow teams out instead of being smart.
March 8th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
We’re t-minus two hours away from the main event — McClymonds vs. De La Salle. I can’t wait!
March 8th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
I don’t know how much of a main even it will be…. Most people will be on their way out to Folsom High to reserve a seat for the St Mary’s- Berkely v Modesto Christian game. Brew Bros v Seeley and Reeves. Wish I was in town to watch that barnburner!
March 8th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
Well, if your from the Oakland Tribune, Mack-De La Salle is the main event. I haven’t enjoyed watching a high school basketball team more than Mack since the days of Jason Kidd at St. Joe’s.
March 8th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
Btw…the prior comment is no snub to St. Mary’s. I’m pulling for them today so I can cover them in Friday’s state championship game.
March 8th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Ok. Thats understandable. But Id watch the comparison to a 2-time state champion in Jason Kidd’s St. Joe’s teams. Even if Otis manhandles DLS tonight (which I think he will, despite the difference in coaching levels), they are not going to get by Dominguez.
March 8th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Useless info: A troubadour (in Occitan trobador, pronounced [tɾuβaˈðu], anciently [tɾuβaˈðoɾ]) was a composer and performer of songs during the European High Middle Ages.
In case you didn’t know, that’s what St. Francis mascot is.
March 8th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Unknown, it’s not a comparison. It’s stating this is the team I’ve most enjoyed since Jason Kidd’s team. And trust me, I know all you need to know about those teams. My aunt was Kidd’s fifth grade PE teacher, my dad went to St. Joe’s so I first started watching that team during his freshman year.
March 8th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Any predictions on State Champ games Mr. Durkin?
DI- DLS/Mack v Dominguez/MLK (Mack v Dominguez) - Im going with the Dons.
DII- Mitty v Mater Dei (Lets be real, neither Edison or Fairfield have a chance)- Im going Mater Dei in a coinflip. I just dont believe Mitty can get it done without a 100% Drew Gordon. Chiverington (sp?) cant carry the Monarchs by himself.
DIII- Sac vs Santa Margarita (official btw)- I may be biased but Sac will get it done. Too much Tapley and Defense.
DIV - SM/MC v Campbell Hall- Either way Jrue Holliday gets it done and CH wins back to back.
DV- Branson v Price- Price owns DV, esp with Branson having a relatively down year personnel wise.
March 8th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
unknown, you a big high school hoops fan or a fan of a team in particular? nice knowledge! how did you find out about this blog?
March 8th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
I’ll throw down predictions at the end of the day once all the matchups are set. No reason to make predictions yet, but I’ll give you that I do like Sac. I wouldn’t mind seeing them play Mack. Fremont, a team that gave Mack fits this year, played Sac to open the year and although I didn’t see the game, they obviously played them well, losing 76-71.
March 8th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
OK, just making sure. I wish I got to see the Kidd at SJ’s, but I was 3 years old back in that day. Im just not a 100% believer in Mack getting it done. Ive seen them play on numerous years and they, like Sac in the past, always seem to have a letdown in the playoffs. Hopefully Otis can get it done this year. I dont want to watch the Princeton O next weekend.
March 8th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
I coached my senior year at Sac and currently am a manager/ video “intern” at Ohio State (I continue to coach on my breaks and will be on the sidelines this Saturday…barring this blizzard clearing up on Thursday). I dont post usually, but I came here from NorCalpreps. I just love HS bball and hope to come back and coach at Sac in the future.
March 8th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
No kidding. I was bummed that Oakland lost Thursday b/c I would’ve much rather watched Mack play O-High for the fourth time. This year’s Mack team seems to be playing more determined and is on a different level. Coach Dwight Nathaniel is retiring after this season and they’re really pushing to send him out strong. And plus, Otis is nowhere near all they have. He’s probably not even their best player not that Damon Powell has returned. They’ve got four guys scoring in double figures.
And yeah, the days of J-Kidd in high school were unreal. I was 10 when he graduated high school and remember watching regular season games at the Oakland Coliseum. Those were some fun times with him and Adrian Ealy ruling the day. I even own an autographed Jason Kidd St. Joe’s t-shirt that I got signed after a game when the principal (who was my dad’s math teacher and JV basketball coach) pulled him out of the locker room.
March 8th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
I definatly miss the days of traveling up to the bay. I just feel that overall, the consistant level of competition is FAR superior than Sacramento. While Sacramento may have a few teams that compete, Sac High has basically dominated the area on a consistant level. But the bay has DLS, the WCAL, Mack, and Branson, and a ton more. And the bottom teams for the most part would demolish the River Citys and Oakmonts of Sac
March 8th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
Mack House is in da house!!! Cheerleaders are making their way up to the stands. About an hour away from tipoff of that one.
March 8th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Just in case you havent heard, your boys at Cal just choked away a HUGE oppurtunity to get into the Dance. Blew a 5 point lead with 10+ sec left. They might need a change there on the bench… BB seems to be overmatched.
March 8th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
I agree, Braun’s best days are past. Can you say NIT?
March 8th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
I just spoke with Mack’s star junior forward Damon Powell, who is battling an ankle injury that caused some swelling yesterday. He said he’s feeling alright and he’ll be good to go.
March 8th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Ben Braun has ruined the Cal program.
March 8th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Well, I cant say anything about the NIT, cuz that is the reason I am heading back to CA for the Title Game. But I think O-State is in a tad better situation than Cal. OSU is having a down year. Cal is having a good year for them.
March 8th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Steve, while I agree with you in that BB is not good for the Bears, I dont know about ruining the program. Maybe this was before my time, but when has the Cal program even been a consistant power in the Pac 10. Yeah there was a good year here and there (a healthy Leon Powe helped), but when has Cal been considered a great P10 program. Kidd days?
March 8th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
I’ll give you that. Cal has never lived up to what kind of program it should be. He’s basically turned the Cal program from what could be an up-tempo, running team to a stagnant offense with zero flow.
How in the world do you have Powe, Hardin, Ubaka and not go anywhere? They should have been dropping at least 80 a game and holding teams to 50
He doesn’t get the right players for his system and the players he does get don’t improve enough for the next level.
March 8th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
I just dont get how he is getting out-recruited in his own backyard by UCLA and Indiana and others. Gordon, Nelson, Holman, Ellis, Lowhorn, etc. That makes no sense.
March 8th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Because those guys don’t want to play in a system like Braun’s.
March 8th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
My prediction here for Mack-DLS is Mack by 10. Let’s get some other folks out there to throw out their predictions.
March 8th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Would you play for him?
That’s not being outrecruited. That’s a kid deciding he wants to go some place else cause Cal stinks.
March 8th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
It’s the same situation at Sac State. Thank God they finally got rid of Jenkins. How do you not get 3 or 4 players from Sac High alone (and Im not counting other Sac-area HSs). In fact, 2 of Sac’s kids went on to play IN THE BIG SKY!!! one of which is starting! Not only is he missing out on talent, but it will help build a local fan base in Sacramento. Instead he recruited terrible JC players from around the country and didnt win. Blows my mind!
March 8th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
Mack by 5.
Over/under 9 on Allocco footstomps.
March 8th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
I don’t know. I went almost 2,000 miles away from home to college so I can’t fault a kid for wanting to get out.
March 8th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Honestly, it really doesnt matter how you get them or why you are not. You are a Pac 10 school in a basketball rich environment. There is no reason you should be losing 85% of the quality talent to other Pac10 teams, esp not the Big 10 or Big XII.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Ha, I am right next to the DLS bench. I will let you know if I feel the vibrations from the Alloco foot stomp. I got Mack by 1.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
There is no way Allocco can be held to just 9 footstomps. I’d set the o/u at at least 20.
Btw, I’m checking in from Scottsdale and just back got from an A’s v Mariners game in Peoria. Mike Sweeney’s swing looks good.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Just for the Record, Im going Mack by 5. But that is without seeing DLS this year. Its more of a prayer than a prediction.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
The problem isn’t who Cal has lost. It’s what Cal has done (or hasn’t done) with the talent it’s recruited. You can’t tell me UCLA or USC doesn’t wish it had Patrick Christopher right now. Anderson can score. Hardin can do some things.
And they still suck.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
Just to let the people at home know, kbcsports.com has a radio broadcast of all the games tonight. Although I have to say, it is the ABSOLUTE worst Play-by-play of all time. But it is at least an oppurtunity to listen to a live feed.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Now, I havent watched Cal very much ever, because I cant stand them, but from what Ive known about Ryan Anderson from his Oak Ridge days, is his lack of foot speed on the defensive end while not being the strongest 6′10 guy of all time. I assume that he gives up defensively more than he scores offensively.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
ha ha…Unknown, I’m sitting right next to the play-by-play guy. Should I relay your thoughts? j/k
March 8th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
check the previous post, the website is kbcsports.com (if you are able to edit, please do)
March 8th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Hence the comment “Anderson can score.” heh heh
Has the game started or what??
March 8th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Not one foot stomp yet guys, which means things are going good for DLS right now.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
I told my mom, who was next to them, to do so for the section title game but she wouldnt.
relay my thoughts of this:
Please learn how to pronounce MA-cly-MONDS, first of all. Secondly, describe the play by play, not just. He scores. Now, he scores. They come back and score again. Stop trying to analyze the game, because you cant. You have done 0 research. Tell me what the heck is going on in the game. And please, whatever the cost, please do not read 250 word commercials during live action and come to find out that my team went from up 3 to down 5 during your commercial break.
Just a little venting from Ohio….
March 8th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Well, now he has two stomps.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
One note of evidence to how little research the announcers did, the play by play guy asked me, “McClymonds is from Oakland, right?”
March 8th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Alloco cracks me up. Quick story:
We were playing DLS at St Marys team camp, who also was running a referee training camp during the team camp. So the refereeing was AWFUL! 3 minutes into the 2nd half, DLS was in the double bonus, so Alloco starts screaming “ARE YOU KIDDING ME? We lead the State of CA in defense every year and we are in the double bonus in 3 minutes? Do you even watch basketball? ” He proceeded to get a technical foul in a team camp. Classic. Great game too.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Mr Durkin, did he ask you if McClemmons was from Oakland? Im about to punch the Monitor if he says McClemmons one more time….
March 8th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Ha, that’s a good story. Alloco has already told the official after a foul on one of his players, “This is a NorCal championship game. We better get the same call.”
March 8th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Classic. I bet those refs are the same ones now working Pac-10 games.
I still subscribe to the Bo Ryan theory that points allowed per game is a bogus stat. Points per possession is more accurate, especially when you play clog-ball like De La Salle.
Go Badgers, 2008 Big Ten regular season champs.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
5-5 after the first quarter?? This is DLS ball for sure.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Any updates on the Branson game? I can predict the score but just want to make sure.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Nah, he just said “Are they …” Luckily I can’t overhear him too much. I know after Mack’s first missed shot of the day, he said “They throw it away. A turnover for the Warriors.”
March 8th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
No updates from the Branson game yet. We will put it on here as soon as we get it.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Wow, I was way off on The Allocco Stomp. (Sounds like a dance.) I figured the distance and acoustics at ARCO would factor in more heavily.
DLS style, but Mack’s playing D, too. That’s the key.

Tower,
Dont tell me you went to UW. Just what I need, a Big10 rival to help remind me how crappy we are this year.
But Bo Ryan is right. Same thing about offense. PPG and PPGA mean little. Its P/poss (the stat is officially OER-offensive execution rate and DER). Thats all we care about at OSU. 1.00 OER and .65 DER are the goals.
As Jay Bilus says after Wisconsin stole the Texas game “BO RYAN IS A THIEF” One of the best in the business. Although I dont see them getting past 2nd round due to matchup issues.

Agreed, especially about the crappy part. heh heh
Still say that whole sequence with Flowers at the end of the Texas game was one of the greatest I’ve ever seen.
Hoose, is Mack getting any sort of looks? What is DLS doing on D?
March 8th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
My question is: Can Maclymonds handle the slow tempo of DLS?
March 8th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
De La is denying Otis in the post and they’ve gotten almost zero looks.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
DLS is doing a tremendous job fronting Otis and Powell right now. Mack is really out of rhythm and has been forced to take jumpers.

If UW draws a team with good perimeter players, it’s trouble. Like Purdue is just a bad matchup.
If UW’s size and style take over then they’ll be alright, until they run into someone like Stanford that plays the same way but is better.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
Makes sense. Nobody shoots well at ARCO.
Is Mack forcing any TOs?
March 8th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
I think Wisconsin is better than Stanford, and here is why…
Stanford will struggle in the tournament because they have inferior guard play. Like Louisville last year, if a team can pressure the post passer and force tournoves, Stanford struggles. The Lopez twins will always get theres, but they struggle when their guards are outmanned. The has been the Lopez twins problems since their days at San Joaquin Memorial. All that frontline talent, with 0 guardplay.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Ha, the look on Alloco’s face after this last foul was classic. He looked up to check the total fouls for each team. DLS has 8 and Mack 3.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
Right now, this is where Mack’s guards needs to start trying to get some penetration. The penetration will force the fronters to help uphill and then guards kick it to Otis for layups. But they cant keep turning the ball over!

“Fun-da-men-tals!”
Interesting Unknown. I agree about Stanford except I wonder the same thing about UW cause Hughes is young and Stanford has Lawrence Hill. He can score where Krabbenhoft is more of a glue guy. Plus the Lopez twins are better than Butch and Stiemsma. Landry would be an interesting matchup.
I think they have the same weakness. Heads up I think Stanford wins.

1 pt. No big thing. Not like DLS got a bunch of points off turnovers and ran out like 6-8 points ahead.
Can’t wait for the Hoose’s halftime analysis or is he off getting a refill on Pepsi and popcorn?
March 8th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
OH MAN, I’M CRYING!
Is anybody watching ESPN right now? They are showing this story about one of the Cameron Crazies who was dancing around in a Speedo when one of the North Carolina players was at the free throw line. The entire section behind the basket sat down and there’s this wack-job shaking around in a blue Speedo.
Hysterical.
Speaking of which Jimmy, is the Mack drum corps there?
March 8th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
I’ll give you analysis. Mack is trying to force that ball inside, but it’s not working. Powell has missed some short jumpers and the guards aren’t taking many shots. Cherry hit one 3, Sims missed a pair that he attempted from NBA range (not sure if he was confused by the two lines or not). I think Mack needs to get its guards to hit some shots to open up the inside game. Right now, DLS is doing everything it could possibly hope for. The treys haven’t really been falling much for the Spartans. But for them to have held Mack to 13 points is something to be ecstatic about.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Nope XTower, no Mack drum corps.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
I think you are underestimating the defensive “abilities” (more like foul-ability) of Steimsa. He shut down Greg last year for the most part. And I think you are forgetting Flowers and Bohannon’s shooting ability. And Landry is an absolute matchup nightmare. So is Butch vs a Zone. I say Wisconsin takes Stanford. but Wisconsin will have issues with speed and pressure defense.

Thanks Hoose. Way to break it down.
Good thing you’re not writing the gamer, huh?!
