BSAL softball goes extras

Today was the day I finally got to see the Albany softball team up close and personal as the Cougars tried to beat St. Patrick-St. Vincent and take command of the Bay Shore Athletic League. Here’s my first impression of the Cougars.

Albany beat SPSV 3-2 in nine innings to essentially guarantee it will win the BSAL title this year. Let me tell you right now: the Cougars are for real.

Barring a massive collapse, the Cougars will be your No. 1 seed in the NCS 2A field and let me tell you, this team could play in 3A. It all starts with the Cannon sisters. Laura went 3-for-4 Wednesday and Joan singled in the winning run. Freshman Ellie Arkin had a humongous triple in the bottom of the ninth inning to get the winning rally started.

But the key to this team is in the circle. Pitcher Sara Muse gave up two unearned runs in the first inning but after that she allowed just one hit over the next eight innings. She retired the final 14 batters she faced. And yes, she’s only a sophomore.

Albany’s seniors are driving the team and that’s the way it should be but man, from what I saw today, the Cougars are here to stay for a few years to come.

Thanks Ben…you are kind to give Joan and Laura their props! It was indeed an exciting game, and St. Pat’s is a very worthy opponent.

I would like to add that Krista Smithers AHS sophomore had an amazing game, hitting 3 for 4 and making 3 of the last six outs. Also you got see probably the two best catchers in BSAL (both sophomores) and they sure deserve a shout out! Holler!
