Upset alert: Down goes Freedom!

Yes, it’s true. Clayton Valley, one of the hottest softball teams in the area right now, defeated Freedom 7-4 today. Here’s the box score:

Clayton Valley 7, Freedom 4
Freedom 010 001 2 — 4 8 4
Clayton Valley 105 100 x — 7 11 3
Hannah Williams and Susan Robertson. Dallas Cooney and Jori Barr. W: Cooney (6-1). L: Williams. 2B: Victoria Kobold (CV), Amanda Moore (CV). HR: Malena Padilla (F), 2nd inn., none on; Williams (F), 7th inn., one on; Kelsey Chambers (CV), 3rd inn., one on. Record: Clayton Valley 11-10, 9-5 BVAL. Highlights: F — Kortnee Wiley 3-for-4, run; Jackie Zepeda 2-for-3, RBI. CV — K. Chambers 3-for-4, run, 3 RBI; Eryn Brescia 2-for-3; Amber Curry 2-for-3, HBP, 3 runs.

Nobody should be too surprised because Clayton’s been really hot lately. Still though, it’s the first time in over a month that Freedom’s allowed a run and it comes in a loss. This sets up (provided Deer Valley beats Pittsburg tomorrow) a true BVAL championship game next Tuesday at Deer Valley between the Wolverines and Falcons. I’d be there if I were you.

It doesn’t surprise me that Clayton Valley’s offense scored 7 runs against Freedom. They have some good hitters. What was surprising was Clayton Valley’s inability to get that offense going during the first half of the season.
It seems to be the year of the upset. It is going to be interesting seeding the NCS. Castro Valley will probably be the #1 seed, but this is a year where there won’t be a lot separating the top seeds in the tournament.
