NCS Softball: Championship previews and predictions

So, we’ve made it to the final day of the softball season. I’ll be heading for Strawberry Canyon in about a half hour but for now, here’s my take on today’s championship games.

NCS 2A Championship
No. 1 Albany vs. No. 3 Concord:
Well, I thought one of these teams would get here. Concord, congrats on the big win yesterday. When the Minutemen choose to play a complete game – defending, hitting, pitching, the whole nine yards – they can be as tough as anyone and that’s what they did yesterday to beat Bishop O’Dowd. I’ve got one big caveat though. If Albany plays the way it did yesterday against Heritage no one, and I mean 3A or 2A, will beat the Cougars. The key for Albany will be to keep SS Lea Cavestany in check. She’s one of my favorite players to watch because she can affect the game at any time. Prediction: Albany

3A Championship
No. 1 Freedom vs. No. 7 California:
I saw Cal play Foothill in their first meeting this year and the general sense was that Foothill was the monkey on the Grizzlies backs. Yesterday, they cleared that hurdle with a big 3-1 win. Congrats to Tom Jones and the Grizzlies. Today, they face the top-seeded Falcons, a team that I haven’t seen challenged in the playoffs. Adding fuel to this fire is the fact that Cal is the team that ended Freedom’s consecutive championship streak last year by beating the Falcons in the second round. Prediction: Freedom.

Alright, there’s a 20% chance of rain today so everyone bring a jacket but get out to Levine-Fricke Field. It’s championship day!
