All competed at the 2008 US Nationals last week. All signed to top rowing colleges. 4 selected for the US National Team currently training at the US Coast Guard Academy. All members of the Oakland Strokes rowing club.

Considering rowing is generally agreed to be one of the hardest and most physically demanding sports in the world and that several of these girls will be rowing on the nations best collegiate teams next year not to mention the US national team this year, I would think one or two should have made the top 100 list.

Piper Akol (Miramonte HS) - UCLA
Molly Castles (Bentley HS) - Lehigh, PA
Leslie Chou (Miramonte HS) - UCLA
Dara Dickson (Acalanes HS) - Yale
Caroline Godfrey (College Prep. HS) - Dartmouth
Beth Goodwin (Miramonte HS) - Cornell
Zoe Janacheck (Berkeley HS) - U. California, Berkeley
Mary-Sophia Motlow (Piedmont HS) - Loyola Marymount
Mollie Roark (Marin Academy) - Wisconsin
Allyson Weiland (Northgate HS) - U. Texas

your right.. many important people were left off this list. i think that every team that at least won NCS should be represented since i guarentee they have an outstanding player..
for example #15 seed CP should have at least been represnted by pitcher Harmen Sidhu.
and CP soccer should have been represented by justin yasutake. MVP of the DFAL and the best player in teh area. also the captain on the 2nd best team in the state.

The top 25% of the athletes on this list are easy to identify. The rest of the picks are subjective and the Times does not publish their criteria for selecting a Top 100 athlete.

Sometimes even obvious top athletes get lost in the process...I couldn't find Monte Vista's Courtney Jones on the list, yet she is a high school soccer All American and earned a scholarship to North Carolina, one of the top soccer programs in the nation. My thought is that she should be on the list. Unfortunately, other worthy candidates were missed too, but that is the nature of a subjective list.

Here is the breakdown of athletes making the list:
male: 58 ; female: 42
Here is the breakdown of sports participation by the athletes on the list:
Basketball: 17.8%; Football: 16.3%; Track: 14.1%; Soccer: 9.6%; Baseball: 7.4%; Cross Country: 6.7%; Softball: 5.9%; Swimming: 4.4%; Tennis: 3.7%; Water Polo: 3.7%; Golf: 3.0%; Wrestling: 3.0%; LaCrosse: 2.2%; Volleyball: 2.2%.
