Alright, so here’s Question No. 2 for the day.
Chace’s question: Salesian has been among the most successful small school programs in the Bay Area over the past several years. A lot of that had to with a certain talented running back who will be lining up opposite Michigan State this Saturday as a member of the California Golden Bears. Last year, in its first season without Jahvid Best, the Pride still featured plenty of talent as players like Jon Wheat and Justin Brown led the team to a 10-2 season. But coach Chad Nightingale had six all-league players graduate, and that leads us to ask the question if the cupboard at Salesian might finally be bare?
Ben’s answer: The cupboard might have some foreign objects, like names you haven’t seen before. But rest assured, the cupboard is not bare.
I have to admit, when I read the Salesian preview this season (spoiler alert: the preview runs Sept. 4 in the prep football special section), I didn’t know a whole lot of the names. One I did recognize was Matt Ching, brother of former Salesian RB/DB Ryan Ching. Matt is playing running back this year and I have a hunch he’ll do just fine.
Another name to watch for is TE Nick Marchini. Nick’s sisters were outstanding cross country runners at Salesian, so the family has plenty of athletic talent. He was an all-Bay Football League selection at tight end and linebacker and he returns to lead the Pride this season.
One question is who the Pride will stick under center. Salesian runs a fairly sophisticated offense and whoever wins the job will have his hands full right from the get go. Truthfully, I have no idea who will end up the quarterback this year (yet, anyway).
The one thing I do know is that Salesian is never far from the title hunt in the BFL. I’d anticipate another run for the league crown from the Pride this season.
