Five questions to go. Aren’t you going to miss all this?
Ben’s question: CalHiSports.com came out with its preseason state rankings earlier this week and De La Salle was atop them once again. With San Ramon Valley and San Leandro also on the list, the race for the state bowl series seems to be taking shape slowly but surely in the East Bay. What’s your take on the inital rankings?
Chace’s question: I think it’s a pretty solid 50, and of course, there’s no debate on the selection for No. 1.
It was nice to see San Ramon Valley get a significant nod at No. 21. Assuming both the Wolves and De La Salle go 3-0 over their first three games, the EBAL could quite possibly have two of the state’s top 20 teams when league play begins. Not too shabby.
As for the Top 10 itself, it’s pretty hard to argue about any of the selections. Long Beach Poly back at No. 2, is not much of a shocker. The Jackrabbits had one of the top defenses in the state a year ago, and the inexperienced offense will be much more poised in 2008. To be honest, this might be the strongest preseason Top 5 in several years (DLS, Poly, Lutheran-Orange, Mater Dei, Bellarmine). I mean, it’s got to be tough if Centennial can’t crack it, right?
If there were a few East Bay teams that might break into the Top 50 over the first few weeks of the season, I’d put my money on either Las Lomas, California or Pittsburg. All three teams have a heavily-loaded nonleague schedule, and if any of them can run the table, they should get some love in the rankings.
