BERKELEY —  Coach Alonzo Carter and the Berkeley High football team was certainly dressed for the occasion.

The Yellowjackets, sporting brand new gold jerseys, and Carter, in a spiffy black suit and red tie, delivered on the field too. Before a large crowd and a Comcast SportsNet television audience, Berkeley grinded out a 13-9 nonleague victory over visiting James Logan on Thursday night.

“That was big,” Carter said of the win. “It validates the progress in this program and validates our style of running the ball and playing smashmouth football.”

While Berkeley moves to 4-1, the Colts saw their record fall to 1-4 at the midway point of the season and likely guaranteed the fact that they’ll need to win the Mission Valley Athletic League title to reach the North Coast Section playoffs.

“Our games are coming down to one mistake,” Logan coach George Zuber said. “In the past we could overcome mistakes. This year, the margin of error is very small. … But I think if we could make the playoffs, we could be peaking at the right time with our young guys.”

Berkeley broke through for the game’s first points early in the second quarter. After the ‘Jackets stopped Logan inches short on a fourth-and-three play, Berkeley drove 56 yards in nine plays and scored on a 6-yard run by quarterback Ian Anderson.

The ‘Jackets special teams delivered on the Colts next drive as Rickey Galvin blocked and then recovered a Justin Pataki punt at the Logan 26-yard line. Eyonte Teague finished that Berkeley drive with a 16-yard run to make it 13-0.

Logan quickly made it a game again though. On the first play of the Colts next drive, quarterback Jonathan Willis faked an inside handoff before keeping it and busting through the hole for 83-yard touchdown that made it 13-6 with 5:19 left in the half.

A lengthy Logan drive in the third quarter stalled at the Berkeley 6, but Colts’ kicker Sergio Ramirez made it 13-9 with a 23-yard field goal.

Logan never got deep in Berkeley territory again and an interception by the ‘Jackets’ Lucas King with 4:55 remaining sealed the win.

“I knew (Willis) was rolling out a lot,” King said. “The coaches told me to either committ and go get him or stay back. I knew he was going to throw and I set my feet and made the play.”

Galvin paced Berkeley with 120 yards on 23 carries while Willis had a game-high 132 yards on 12 carries for Logan.

  1. Big Joe Says:

BHS is looking like Long Beach Poly every day! Beat a Logan team from the program that has been down for several years- BHS should make the play-offs- 1st round at Owens-Owen Field vs. you know you- prediction? You make the call- last 10 meetings- lost by combined scores of at least 50-00 per contest. Can’t wait for that yellowjacket suit with the red tie- someone going to run into some smashmouth football like a brick wall, similar to what happened to Poly several years back. They’ll pull the starters by halftime.
