Here’s a look at this week’s action in the Oakland area.
ACCAL
Hercules (1-4, 0-1) at De Anza (0-4), 7 p.m.
Last week: Hercules lost to Berkeley 58-0, De Anza lost to Monterey 53-0
Notes: Both teams took it on the chin last week, losing by a combined 111-0. The Titans ran into the league favorite and managed just 3 yards of offense. Michael Montgomery, the league’s leading passer with 527 yards, looks to bounce back.
Durkin’s prediction: Hercules 21, De Anza 20
Alameda (1-4, 1-0 ACCAL) at El Cerrito (2-3, 1-0), 7 p.m.
Last week: Alameda beat Richmond 45-0, El Cerrito beat Pinole Valley 17-14
Notes: The Hornets got in the win column last week, as they ran for 244 yards against the Oilers behind Romel Obcena (106) and James Powell (82). Quarterback Tom Ruckman also threw for 148 yards. The Gauchos came from behind to beat perennial power Pinole Valley. Andre Williams hit Kenneth Green with a late 21-yard touchdown pass to win.
Durkin’s prediction: El Cerrito 24, Alameda 21
Richmond (0-5, 0-1) at Pinole Valley (2-2, 0-1), 7 p.m.
Last week: Richmond lost to Alameda 45-0, Pinole Valley lost to El Cerrito 17-14.
Notes: The Spartans are very close to being 4-0, letting two leads get away in the fourth quarter. They look to bounce back against a team also looking to rebound. Pinole Valley’s Tyrell Smallwood, the league’s leading rusher with 641 yards, ran for 106 yards against El Cerrito.
Durkin’s prediction: Pinole Valley 31, Richmond 6
BFL
Emery (0-5) at California School for the Deaf (1-3, 0-1 BFL), 7 p.m.
Last week: CSD lost to Big Valley Christian 42-22, Emery lost to Elliot Christian-Lodi 50-18
Notes: CSD has a good shot at its second victory of the season as Emery gives up a lot of points and has trouble scoring. Emery’s 18 points last week were its first of the season. Spartans QB George Henderson accounted for all three TDs with two rushing and one through the air as the offense amassed 400 yards against Elliot Christian.
Durkin’s prediction: CSD 31, Emery 14
BSAL
Moreau Catholic (0-4, 0-1 BSAL) at Albany (2-2, 0-1), 3:30 p.m.
Last week: Moreau Catholic lost to Kennedy-Richmond 53-7, Albany lost to Encinal 37-0.
Notes: The Mariners, who haven’t won since October 2007, have scored a total of 26 points in four games. The Cougars have lost two in a row, including a shutout against Encinal. Albany had just 50 yards against the Jets. Cougars QB Andrew Spivey has thrown for five touchdowns and 466 yards.
Durkin’s prediction: Albany 27, Moreau Catholic 12
John Swett (1-3, 0-1) at Kennedy-Richmond (3-1, 1-0), 6:30 p.m.
Last week: John Swett lost to St. Patrick-St. Vincent 42-7, Kennedy beat Moreau Catholic 53-7
Notes: The Eagles will roll in the portable lights to host the Indians for homecoming. After Evan Ray scored on a 10-yard run against St. Patrick-St. Vincent, the Indians got outscored 42-0 in their third straight loss. Kennedy notched its third win in a row. Eagles RB/DB Laron Peterson scored three touchdowns, returning a kickoff 99 yards, a fumble 23 yards and an interception 65 yards.
Durkin’s prediction: Kennedy 31, John Swett 21
Encinal (4-0, 1-0) at Piedmont (2-2, 1-0), 7 p.m.
Last week: Encinal beat Albany 38-0, Piedmont beat St. Mary’s 35-14
Notes: The Jets stayed unbeaten by winning their first BSAL game last week. Encinal racked up 268 yards rushing and got touchdowns from five players. Quarterback Jonathan Brown threw for two touchdowns and ran for 61 yards on five carries. Jets RB Dominique Sashington won’t play this week after being ejected against Albany. Piedmont is following the same road as last year, losing its first two before rallying to win two straight. Last year the Highlanders won seven in a row before dropping their final two.
Durkin’s prediction: Encinal 27, Piedmont 17
St. Mary’s (1-3, 0-1 BSAL) at St. Patrick-St. Vincent (3-1, 1-0), 7 p.m.
Last week: St. Mary’s lost to Piedmont 35-14, St. Patrick beat John Swett 42-7.
Notes: Panthers RB Jordan Wilder continued his scoring streak with two rushing touchdowns. He has five touchdowns in four games. However, the St. Mary’s defense couldn’t stop Piedmont, giving up 380 yards, five touchdowns and a field goal. The Bruins used an explosive running attack — picking up 396 yards rushing — to roll over John Swett. Michael Meekins had 123 yards and two scores on 10 carries.
Durkin’s prediction: SPSV 37, St. Mary’s 19
Nonleague
Skyline (0-4) at Heritage (3-1), 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Skyline lost to Jesse Bethel-Vallejo 39-19, Heritage did not play.
Notes: The Titans have struggled early, allowing opponents to outscore them 137-38. Skyline’s Darquis Rucker has scored 36 of those points, including three touchdowns against Bethel last week. Rucker is fourth in scoring in the Oakland Athletic League with six touchdowns. Heritage running back Josh Macias leads his team in rushing with 309 yards and four touchdowns.
Durkin’s prediction: Heritage 21, Skyline 13
Oakland (3-1) at Liberty (2-2), 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Oakland beat Chavez-Stockton 21-13, Liberty beat Hogan-Vallejo 28-12
Notes: After relying primarily on the running game the first three games, the Wildcats went to the air more last week. QB Charles Cobbs threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns and on the year has six TD tosses with no interceptions. Fellow junior Damante Horton caught both TD passes, amassing 137 yards on four catches. Nate Humphrey paced the Lions a week ago with 160 yards and three touchdowns.
Durkin’s prediction: Oakland 31, Liberty 14
Salesian (2-2) at McClymonds (2-2), 7 p.m.
Last week: Salesian lost to Castlemont 35-14, McClymonds lost to Woodside 40-6
Notes: The Pride got a defensive touchdown from Brandon Rice to stay close with Castlemont for a half before the Knights pulled away. The rushing game was limited to 58 yards, with Zeke Wheeler leading the way with 54 yards on 11 carries. The Warriors have struggled on the road the past two weeks after winning two at home. Denzale Johnson rushed for 101 yards rushing, and Mikal Hardy caught a 90-yard TD pass from Robert Brigham.
Durkin’s prediction: McClymonds 31, Salesian 24
Fremont (4-0) at Pittsburg (3-1), 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Fremont beat Monte Vista Christian-Watsonville 49-14, Pittsburg beat Burbank-Sacramento 35-6.
Notes: Though the Tigers enter unbeaten, the combined records of their opponents is 4-13. The combined record of the Pirates’ opponents is 11-5. Pittsburg has not faced an Oakland Athletic League opponent since beating Oakland 67-0 in 2001. Fremont’s 49 points last week were the most it has scored since a 51-18 win over Oakland in October 2003. Pittsburg hasn’t scored fewer than 29 points in any game this season.
Durkin’s prediction: Pittsburg 38, Fremont 21
Saturday
HAAL
San Lorenzo (3-1, 1-0) at Bishop O’Dowd (4-0, 1-0), 1:45 p.m.
Last week: San Lorenzo beat Tennyson 21-20; Bishop O’Dowd beat Mt. Eden 36-0
Notes: O’Dowd coach Paul Perenon will be going for win No. 200 in his career, but these are also two undefeated teams in HAAL play. The Dragons ran over the Monarchs last week, compiling 208 yards on 33 carries. Che’rod Simpson went for 105 yards and three TDs as the Dragons held a 29-0 lead at the half. The defense held the Monarchs to 283 yards of offense. The Rebels have won three in a row for the first time since 2006, which is also the last time San Lorenzo won four in a row. It took a two-point conversion with under two minutes to go to knock off the Lancers. The Rebels had just to 270 yards of offense, but the defense picked up the slack by holding Tennyson to just 180 yards. Expect the Dragons to pound the run with Mario Brown and Simpson, while the Rebels will continue with their balanced attack.
Durkin’s prediction: Bishop O’Dowd 38, San Lorenzo 0
Nonleague
Tamalpais (4-0) at Castlemont (2-1-1), 1:30 p.m.
Last week: Tamalpais beat Drake-San Anselmo 39-3; Castlemont beat Salesian 34-15
Notes: Coming off an 0-10 season, the Red-Tailed Hawks are feeling good with four straight wins. In the past two weeks, they’ve outscored opponents 95-3 although points figure to be much tougher to come by against the stingy Castlemont defense. The Knights’ Aaron Horne is in the top five in the OAL in rushing and leads the league with 62 points (10 touchdowns, one two-point conversion). RB Juvonte Owens is coming off a second-straigh 100-yard game and third overall and is second in the OAL in rushing with 443 yards.
Durkin’s prediction: Castlemont 28, Tamalpais 14
St. Bernard-Eureka (3-2) vs. St. Elizabeth (2-2) at Burrell Field, 1:30 p.m.
Last week: St. Bernard lost to South Fork 16-7; St. Elizabeth lost to Washington-S.F. 19-6
Notes: Another key nonleague matchup for the Mustangs as its pits them against a North Coast Section Division V foe and potential playoff opponent. The Crusaders have split their past two games against fellow Div. 5 teams Hoopa Valley and South Fork — teams St. Bernard will face again this season in the five-team Humboldt Del Norte Little 5 League. St. Elizabeth will look to improve a running game that was limited to 70 net rushing yards in last week’s loss.
Durkin’s prediction: St. Elizabeth 19, St. Bernard 14
Oakland Tech (1-3) at Ygnacio Valley (2-2), 1 p.m.
Last week: Oakland Tech lost to Mt. Diablo 20-7, Ygnacio Valley lost to Redwood 48-14
Notes: The Bulldogs stayed close to Mt. Diablo for three quarters, as the game was tied at 7 until the final play of the third quarter. They limited Mt. Diablo to 151 total yards, but only had 132 themselves. The Warriors fell behind 15-0 in the first quarter against Redwood and trailed 42-6 by the end of the third quarter. Ygnacio Valley had 202 total offensive yards, but allowed 403 total yards, including 209 passing.
Durkin’s prediction: Ygnacio Valley 21, Oakland Tech 20

San Lorenzo might be more competitive against BOD than people think
October 10th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
I agree, San Lorenzo is a tough team. They are 3-1 right now and the one loss was to a 4-1 Mt. Diablo team.
BOD will still win but SLZ will give them a game

Bay’s Finest,
Did you read the two stories two weeks ago in the Oakland Tribune? The first was the View from the Tower on Sept. 30 talking about the turnarounds of both Fremont and Oakland and the second was on Oct. 3 previewing the game against Chavez and talking about Oakland’s electric offense and the team’s vast improvement.
