Never too early for Mack hoops

I just got the McClymonds High boys basketball scheduled e-mailed to me by 2008 Cal-Hi Sports state coach of the year and Bay Area News Group East Bay coach of the year Dwight Nathaniel, which brought the immediate reaction of “Is Coach Moe back?” I’ll quickly squash those rumors and say no. Dwight said he’s just helping new coach Brandon Brooks with some administrative stuff. Since I have the defending state champs schedule in hand, I thought I’d point out some of the highlights.

Ygnacio Valley 36, College Park 13

No, that’s not a typo. Ygnacio Valley dominated after halftime, holding CP to just 36 yards after intermission and Patrone Wood II rushed for 182 yards on 35 carries.

The thing I found most interesting about today’s game was College Park’s inability to stay on the field on offense. Ygnacio Valley ran 74 offensive plays, College Park ran just 32. Sometimes football is really, really simple. If you don’t have the ball, you can’t score.

Tuli Taufoou rushed for 109 yards on seven carries for YV. Chase Danska led College Park with 99 yards on 12 carries.

Bellarmine upset by Serra

For the De La Salle fans out there, Bellarmine-San Jose lost to Serra-San Mateo tonight, 31-23. The Bells were ranked No. 1 in Northern California by CalHiSports.com going into the game. Even if DLS doesn’t ascend back into the top spot in the Northern California rankings this week, this could be a huge development when it comes time to pick a team to go to the CIF State Open Division Bowl Game. The committee weighs common opponents pretty heavily and the Spartans beat Serra to open the season.

For the record, Serra has one of the best kickers around. His name is Greg Guttas. The kid has monster leg. Not sure why I mentioned that, it just sounded like something to share.
