  • phs04

Pittsburg is up 14 – 2 at haltime .. Cal’s only points came on a safety by a pittsburg db after an interception

  • bigbulldoza

does anyone have the score or a blaog address for the Cal game vs pittsburg

  • bigbulldoza

if someone can update the cal/pit game score on this blog that would be GREAT! I can’t find a direct blog for the game!

  • bigbulldoza

update on the cal/pit game score?

  • samb

The old format is better — get rid of those comments inside the blog above. We want to read/hear what’s happening in the game….let those who want to have sidebars discuss in this comment area.

  • bigbulldoza

    Final of pit/cal?

  • PHS04

17-9 Pittsburg. Green was ineffective and didn’t get 100 yards rushing or 70 i don’t think

  • http://gmail.com pitt50

    pit 17
    cal 9

  • Kyle Bonagura

And I thought last night’s MV-SRV game was intense.

    This game was even better.

I came away very impressed by Freedom. Ryan Rodriguez and Roman Runner and studs….

  • Prep Fan

Yeah, Pitt’s defense really did a number on Green. Pitt had an early 14-0 lead, then Sanchez made some adjustments and Cal outscored Pitt 7-3 in the second half. Cal passed the ball pretty well, as it was one of Stompro’s better games, but Pitt came out fired up and focussed on stopping the run. I believe Pitt had not scored less than 28 or so all year, as Cal’s defense after about the halfway through the second quarter shut down the Pitt offense as well. A good defensive battle for both teams, but Pitt deserved to win. SRV has no run game to stop next week, so they’ll need to adjust their defensive game plan to stop or at least limit Southwick.

  • PHS04

we all know who shut down Pittsburgs offense.. PENALTIES, and no i’m not shifting blame to the refs, they were pretty bad on the discipline side of things. how do you ever have a 1st and 47 lol. not to mention the P.I (legit call) on 3rd down that led to Cal’s touchdown..

  • Got2go

Pittsburg’s bad offense was due to bad play calling. Way too predictable.

  • PHS04

too predictable?? i think they drove down and scored twice? not to mention out gainig cal by 100 yards. Galli did enough to win the game, and actually didn’t show much of the offense.. He went with what was working and evidently it did, seeing the outcome of the game..

  • Got2go

They outgained Cal despite the play calling, not because of it. They’re lucky none of those quick side routes to the receivers weren’t taken back for a pick-6. Pitt would have won this game by 20 with good coaching and without stupid penalties.

  • PHS04

well hell if all the CAL dbs are playing 5 to 7 yards off the ball you go with the hot read genius.. sounds like good coaching to me on the playcalling side of it.

  • Got2go

You only do that if your QB can make the throw, which he didn’t tonight. Pitt’s defense won this game for them, not the offense.

  • PHS04

umm alright, even though the offense did drive 80 yards on the first drive to score. The defense was stellar..

  • Got2go

The offense looked good until they went up 14-0, after that it looked like they were playing not to lose.

  • PHS04

yea attibute that to Galli’s conservative approach. which you can’t really knock him for, considering the faith he has in his defense.. Dargan is a beast.

  • Prep Fan

Both offenses looked poor tonight (after the first two Pitt drives), but credit the defenses. These were two of the best defenses in the East Bay and everyone has trouble with both of them.

  • PHS04

Cal finally lost by more than 7 this season..

  • Kyle Bonagura

    Still a 1-score game though.

Turned out to be the type of game I was expecting, anyone who thought there was going to be 50+ points was nuts.

Pitt is in good shape for a state bowl berth now. If they beat SRV AND DLS too, I think the Pirates edge out Bellarmine. If Valley Christian can beat Bellarmine in the finals, then Pitt would really be in good shape.

  • Got2go

Not really a one score game. The safety at the end of the first half was a Pitt gift.

  • PHS04

true, not like Cal did anything special to make the guy kneel in the endzone. what do you guys think about that 52 yard field goal by Cal

  • Got2go

It was worth a try, I guess. Didn’t really hurt them since Pitt got the ball on the 20 not at the spot of the try like in pro ball.

  • PHS04

yea that was something new to learn, i though they’d get it at the 42.. nice for highschool rules to reward a team after missing a field goal

  • Got2go

The big problem I had with the Pitt coaching tonight was how the first half ended. Why not just run the ball and end the half instead of throwing it downfield and giving Cal another chance to score? Turns out they got the safety after that and could have scored again after the free kick.

  • Kyle Bonagura

There has to be some kind of a rule that says how far out you can be and still put the ball at the 20.

If not, then teams could attempt 100 yard field goals
    instead of punting

  • Kyle Bonagura

And gift or no gift, 8 points is still a one score game.

  • Got2go

There’s no rule limiting how far you can attempt a field goal. A long field goal attempt could be more easily returned than a punt, so it doesn’t make much sense past your kicker’s range.

  • Got2go

You’re reaching Kyle on that one!!

  • Kyle Bonagura

What would happen if you attempted a field goal and, say, hit a line drive that hits the ground. Isn’t it dead and placed at the 20?

    8 points is a td and a 2-point. How is that a reach? It’s a fact.

Last night, it was a big deal when MV missed an extra point that would have made it 36-28. Instead, it was down 36-27 and had to score twice.

  • PHS04

but if u shanked your field goal attempt from lets say 75 yards out, that would be a nice gift to the offense..
nonethe less pittsburg still handed Cal its worst defeat of the season.. as well as cal limiting pittsburg to less than half their season average..

  • Got2go

My point was that the game wasn’t really an 8 point game as far as how close it was. Pitt really wasn’t challenged all night, but kept Cal in the game with mental errors and conservative play calling.

  • Kyle Bonagura

Hopefully I’ll be out in Pittsburg next week to see the Pitt-SRV game (either blogging or covering it for print) I really want to see Pitt play.

Cal is still looking for 1 game next year in none league.

A Cal-Pitt game would definitely draw some interest now that they’ve split the past two seasons.

  • Got2go

I don’t think there’s any love lost between these teams or coaching staffs.

  • Kyle Bonagura

Yeah I see what you’re saying, but even so, it would have taken just one big play and the game could have been tied… All credit to Pitt for making sure that one play didn’t happen.

  • PHS04

Pittsburg had a horrible week in practice too, the really almost gave that game away..

  • pitthighfan

Kyle, you gotta see how Pitt plays this year. It’ll serve you well if you’ll be around in the SRV game at Pitt next Saturday. Pitt plays like DLS so I wouldn’t be surprised if Pitt blows out SRV like DLS did in the regular season.

By the way, BANG reporters were 75% inaccurate in their predictions for the MV-SRV and Pitt-Cal game. Sounds like Calpreps had better accuracy.

  • Kyle Bonagura

I have no problem admitting I was wrong with the pick.

But if you feel its necessary to bring that up, then you should at least admit that you were way off in your prediction that Pitt was going to win by 3 touchdowns.

No one knows what will happen every game, especially in high school sports.

  • Michael Bower

What are you talking about, Kyle? We are supposed to be 180-0 and have the exact score for every high school game of the year!

  • john

    PHS04, One Throw Away!

Sorry PHS04 but I was at the Pitt/Cal game last night and the game was actually one play or one throw away from going either way.

3rd quarter 14-9 Pitt. Pitt losing composure just threw easy pick and Cal ball on Pitt 30 yard line. Patterson man on man with Cal’s best receiver Zwarg who just 2 plays before went deep for six points make a nice double move to the inside and fortunately for Pitt ball is a little high and outside or else Zwarg walks in for six more and the lead and any maybe the game. To Pitts credit they did stiffen after that play and contain Cal but I’m sure that is a pass Stompro would like to have back. Congrats to Pitt however they play great with a ton of emotion. Their defense attacks and runs to the ball like none I have seen this year as well as hits like freight trains. Their running backa also run hard every play very impressive. That being said it looked like many of those penalties were justified and if you don’t improve your pass rush this next week Southwick might make that ONE throw that will beat you. Good Luck however and your coaches had a lot of class and respect for Cal players after the game which was great to see. Cal’s team and especially their defense played their heart out to stay in the game.

  • Dboy925

I know exactly wat play your are talking about. They went up top to Zwarg as Patterson had him in coverage 1on1. They went to there big play guy and he couldent deliver. It wasent the most perfect ball in the world, but it hit both hands, so Zwarg could have and should have come down with it. As for the Pitt pass rush, expect Pitt to definatly find a way to get in Southwicks face. And expect the DB’s to have a much better game. They know that this week the ball is going to be in the air.

  • Prep Fan

Funny how people say that Cal losing by 8 to Pitt wasn’t really that close, even though they were down by just 5 midway through the 4th quarter and were 35 yards away from a chance to tie it on the last possession. Just like the DLS wasn’t as close as the 21-14 score indicated even though the game was tied with 4 minutes left. Cal’s defense is bend but don’t break and is a lot better than most people want to give them credit for, even when they just get through watching them. Aside from Green, the Cal defense is what kept them in every game this season. Pitt’s defense was even better last night, but that doesn’t take away from the great job Cal’s defense did alll season.

  • phs04

A lot of people say the game wasn’t as close as the score indicated, due to the fact that pittsburg killed another promising drive with over 35 yards in penalties, not to metion the gimme safety play by the pittsburg DB.. What’s funny is the fact that stompro threw for a whopping 139 yard on 10-21 passing with 2 picks, but pittsburgs pass coverage needs to step up.. Yea the DBs were beat on a couple occasions but then again on a couple occasions the ball also should have been picked off

  • john

My point was that although I felt Pittsburgh did play better and deserved to win, that one or two plays a little different and it could have swung over to Cal. The play in question I actually felt that Sanchez had the perfect play call and Pittsburgh’s defense was not prepared as they had no safety help at all. I realize that Patterson is the top DB in the area but it is hard for anyone to play man on man over most of the field. I think Pittsburgh was a little more lucky than good on that play thats all. Overall they were excellent and deserved the win!!

Kyle…I thought you knew football…your comment about the rule on how far out you can kick is disappointing. The other team can return the kick as its a live ball…that’s the downside (see 49ers v. Bears last season, same rule applies in HS). That’s why Pitt had a guy back deep. The other reason guys don’t do it is a bad snap or blocked kick on the other side of the field could really hurt your team. Good call by Sanchez, one of the few in the game (if he punts, he nets maybe 10 yards more)….unlike the spike and waste of a down near the end of the game which cost his team a shot with plenty of time left. Terrible clock management. Also, if Leroy could make a cut and run outside, he might have done something…straight ahead running obviously didn’t work on Pitt. Sanchez says he’s not being recruited, no wonder, he has no lateral ability. Overall, Pitt was the better team and even with the Pitt shortcomings the game was not as close as 8 points. 9 out of 10 times, Pitt wins that game.

  • EBAL Follower

We’ll see how good Patterson is this week. My bet is he can’t cover Peterson and will get torched. If he needs help on Peterson, Gruendl will hurt them. He needed help on Zwarg who still got his 7 and 100. Pitt’s overaggressive play early will hurt them v. SRV. Southwick is the real deal. BY FAR the best ability and technical skills of any QB in this area. Mannion can’t even throw the long out in warmups. Nottingham can’t handle the pressure. Wayne is good but a weak arm on long ball. Slow release on the Freedom kid.

Pitthigh…sorry , you guys don’t even play close to DeLaSalle. I’ve never seen a deLa player intercept and touch for a safety, 5 personal fouls (one on the coach for touching a Cal kid and the one on the punter was bonehead), a false start all within 12 minutes of play. Also, Pitt’s lack of conditioning showed when Flowers kept laying on the ground and when the energy level was 1/2 of what it was in the first quarter. When these guys are down to SRV and can’t defense the spread O, let’s see if they go in the tank.
