Friday night hoops

I know football is the talk of the night with De La Salle falling in the CIF Division I State Champioinship Bowl Game, but I wanted to throw out a little hoops talk.

I was filling in for Michael Bower and covering a little HAAL tonight and was out at the Castro Valley-San Leandro game. It was a pretty good atmosphere out there. It’s tough to beat the atmosphere of an OAL game, but this one was close. Some good chants from the Castro Valley Sixth Man crew, although a few were borderline (be careful with the BS chants). A great performance on the court by the Trojans to earn a 73-69 win on the road. Rashad Parker was clutch with 22 points, including a big 3-pointer after San Leandro had taken some momentum with a put back dunk by Jared Cunningham (22 points). Shaheed Young also had a great game for the Pirates with 23 points. It was fun to be out checking out some HAAL action again. It’s been three years since I regularly covered the league.

The big news of the night from the hardwood was Oakland Tech’s stunning 54-50 victory on the road over De La Salle. From what I got after talking to Tech coach Michael Quinney, the Bulldogs got three free-throws down the stretch from Devin Crear to help seal the victory and a standout performance from Richard Boston (22 points). For those unaware, the Spartans came into that game ranked No. 6 in the nation by the USA Today. DLS was probably rated too high and their strong preseason ranking was based heavily on the addition of Georgetown recruit Hollis Thompson, who left the program without ever taking the court. But regardless, the Spartans were many people’s favorite to represent Northern California in the state finals (although my pick would’ve still been McClymonds). This loss will certainly knock DLS down (or more than likely out) of the rankings and makes Tech a sleeper pick to pull off some upsets in the OAL. Maybe McClymonds is next?

hey Trojan Den i keep wondering why you guys don’t help out your football team a little. I dont remember any trojan den when Monte Vista beat you guys in your own house 55-0

  • High School Sports Junkie

Lets get back to talking about sports on the court, this trojen den thing is getting way too much ink. Let’s talk about athletes and not about fools who never had the ability to step on a court or field…
I think trojen den should put on a skirt and get out there with the other cheerleaders

  • Sl alumni

high school sports junkie; THE BEST comment yet,I could not agree more that is the point I was trying to make LET THEM PLAY! and if they were cheerleaders they would not be allowed to do half of what they do, cheerleaders have rules too.

  • The Trojan Den

Haters. You can say whatever you want about the Trojan Den. Fact is: we are 11-1 and the Den has hurt the feelings of numerous opponents. We change the game more than any cheerleaders…

MV, we’ll see you in NCS, if you make it that far. SL, we’ll see you in CV. Jared Cunningham and Shaheed Young will need psychiatric help when we are done with them.

The Den is wussss good. Can’t be stopped.

  • O’Dad

Breaking hoops news…O’Dowd just pounded St.Anthony’s of New Jersey(I think they were ranked #1 in the USA) by unofficial score of 79-40. This is at the Torrey Pines classic in San Diego. BOD is the real deal when playing on all cylinders. We lost to Berkeley in 2 OTs while shooting 15-35 from the line, with 28 turnovers. Martin knocking the football rust off with 14, 9, and 8. Brue, Capiti, Barton, Ashley playing great. Play Newark tomorrow, hope there’s no let down.

  • dez #72

yea o’dowd is the real deal in hoop this year they the best in the bay by far I expect national rankings now capiti, brue, barton, ashley and martin on the court at the same time is dangerous with all tht size and speed

  • descamp72

and yea St.Anthonys won the Maxpreps National Championship thy raned 15th on usatoday

  • O’Dad

I don’t know if we’re the best in the bay, Mack may have something to say about that. But, I think they are on nights that they are focused, share the ball, don’t throw it away, and don’t think everybody on the roster has to play equal minutes.

  • http://ibabuzz.com/prepcorner Jimmy Durkin

Exactly O’Dad. I don’t think there’s anyway you can say O’Dowd is the best in the Bay when you have Mack in the picture. O’Dowd’s very solid and in the top 10 in the East Bay for sure, but right now they have a few problems. The main one is a lack of an outside threat and, like O’Dad says, I agree that the distribution of minutes can be adjusted. When they get going and start to gell, I think they’ll be a strong contender for an NCS title.

  • O’Dad

They have a very good outside threat in James Thomas, 6-3 junior. He will be getting much more minutes I believe… I agree otherwise, they can beat anyone in Norcal when they play their best…they can also lose to inferior teams, when not.

  • dez #72

Ooops forgot about MACK and did u you say top ten in east bay thy are 2nd or 3rd in Norcal behind Mack if they beat Newark then 2nd for sure. and yea I seen tht Thomas kid he is a great shooter.

  • http://ibabuzz.com/prepcorner Jimmy Durkin

If Thomas gets more minutes, then they have an outside threat. Against Berkeley, he didn’t play the whole game then finally came in late in the fourth and buried the only shot he took. They’ll need a consistent outside threat to beat the best teams around (and with Mack, St. Mary’s, Castro Valley, Berkeley, San Leandro and many others, the talent level is deeeeep).

  • O’Dad

    Your right.

  • The Trojan Den

wow that’s impressive o’dowd. can’t wait to go to oakland and see the o’dowd – cv game on the 7th. The den will be there in full force.

  • O’Dad

You are more than welcome to be there in full force. If I recall, Jourdan, Rashad, and the point guard(forgot his name) was the reason you beat us for the first time in history, not the den.

  • The Trojan Den

Hey O’Dad we don’t want or need a welcoming. You will regret welcoming us. Good luck to the Dragons. Beating St. Anthony’s by 29 is something special. Don’t know how good SA is this year, but still great.

DJ Broome, DeMuynck, and Rashad were the reason we won last year.

Better start learning some new names like Bobbitt and Read, because CV Basketball is gonna stay on top.

    Can’t wait.

I think the HAAL goes to CV or O’Dowd based on what I’ve seen. Hayward has talent, but I don’t really see much success. Same with SL, although they could surprise us.

  • dez #72

    hahaha good point o’dad

  • O’Dad

Trojan Den, pretty good assessment of the league. Our win tonight just shows how strong the HAAL is. Btw, when I was growing up back east(long time ago) all the schools had a mens club like yours at the games(the whole male student body) and it made the games electric. I would go to the games to watch and listen to the rowdy fan club as much as the game. CV has been a sleeping giant in sports and its good for the league that they are going to be a power for a while. You have a keeper in Nick Jones.

  • The Trojan Den

Right you are about Nick Jones. He is an outstanding coach. The Den loves Nick Jones and he loves us back. As a senior member of the Den, I can honestly say it is one of the funnest parts of being in high school, and you know what I am talking about.

The HAAL is very strong if I am talking about a talented Davion Berry led Hayward as middle of the road in the HAAL. This is gonna be a fun year. The seniors in the Den are about as crazy as they come and we are gonna have a great time rooting for CV this year.

  • High School Sports Junkie

I am going to go on record as predicting a Newark Memorial victory tonite. They are not getting the respect in here that they deserve. The program has been one of the best in NCS year in and year out ( I didn’t say THE best) Hopefully they bring thier “A” game tonite and play up to thier potential..

  • Hugo Bossy

    Bower
Any good games coming up? I would like to see this O’dowd team. I mentally just cant grasp O’dowd finishing 4th in the HAAL last yr and return basically the same team but adding a good freshmen and now they are beating National powerhouses. It’s obviously true but I have to see this for myself.

  • ccosby

o’dowd sl will be right there in the end

  • ccosby

don’t get caught up in all the ratings and who beat who this early in the season all those ratings are based on the teams success in the previous year i don’t think o’dowd would even be in the top 100 let alone the top 15 i.e. St Anthonys i guess that would put berkley in the top ten

  • O’Dad

No doubt, SL will be there in the end. They could easily win the league. That’s all I’m saying-is that the HAAL is very strong this year. Btw, O’Dowd beat Newark Memorial 55-52 in OT last night down in San Diego…

  • O’Dad

    Correction- O’Dowd 62, Newark Mem. 55

  • ccosby

the top four teams in the haal are good after that the bottom five could not win the jv title that means you can chalk up 10 wins apiece for the top four automatically playing nobody. three or four years ago the haal was six or seven teams deep every game, you had to come and play everynight or you would lose, those ten wins will not help out in ncs seeding at all. right now sl has some very good wins bod has some very good wins cv has only beaten one team over 500 and not sure about hayward. just a thought but that being said the top four should battle all year long

  • Michael Bower

That’s true Ccosby, but four out of nine teams being solid isn’t bad. There is no other league in the East Bay, except maybe the OAL, that can say they have four solid teams.

  • Michael Bower

    Hugo,

We got Castro Valley-Bishop O’Dowd coming up on Jan. 7. That should be a good one.

  • dez #72

last league matchup worth watching of the league is Hayward-Tennyson Div 2 playoff implications game. I know Tennyson got Hammered by BOD but they don’t have the size to play with the Dragons but the 3 guards at Tennyson matchup well with Hayward and its a pretty even matched . Davion Berry will be guarded by the Sophmore Sensation Hameed Ali or his brother Qaadir

  • http://ibabuzz.com/prepcorner Jimmy Durkin

The OAL can definitely make that claim of four solid teams and can actually say all six are solid. Tech tied for last place last year and this year has a win over defending NorCal finalist De La Salle on the Spartans home court. ‘Nuff said there. Castlemont was the other last place team and its 9-2, including a 5-point loss to St. Mary’s (although I don’t think Brew played in that one).

  • The Trojan Den

Big revealing game next wednesday CV at O’Dowd. The winner takes the HAAL in my opinion, barring a surprise by underachieving Hayward and still good SL. If we rolled 60 deep in san leandro, i think we can roll 80 in o’dowd. we really need to take over that tiny gym. I think the outside shooting of Parker and Bobbitt will overmatch the size of BOD. Defensively, we will have to work hard to keep BOD outside the paint.

Interesting note: Castro Valley has not lost in a blowout in the last two years. Our biggest loss was a fluke 6 pt loss to Berkeley a couple weeks ago. We are always in games, no matter who we play.

  • Hugo Bossy

Hayward beat Los Lomas Tonight getting a little payback from last yrs NCS defeat. Hayward looked really good tonight I believe Keith Martin had 6 blocks and Davion Berry finished the game with 20 points and a couple of crowd wowing assist. When Hayward is on they are on. I look forward to seeing them play one of the other top teams in the HAAL.
