Why CIF’s Grant over DLS reasoning makes no sense

The reasoning that Grant’s two wins over state champions from the highest level of football from Idaho and Utah are absolutely ridiculous. It doesn’t give value to the quality of football being played here in California. So I started thinking, how many of the teams DLS played could win a state title at THE HIGHEST LEVEL of football in states not named California. Of course, I had to rely on the CalPreps project a matchup tool to make this work. The results are probably shocking to the CIF, but to those of us who actually follow high school football, well, not so much.

East Bay Soccer Notebook

Welcome newcomers Dublin, Liberty and Las Lomas High Schools to the top 15 as a big win over Pittsburg propels the Patriots to No. 13. The Gaels and Knights move in after just being on the fringe a week ago. Those two are shaping up to be the power of the Diablo Foothill Athletic League, with just one loss between them.

DLS lands in Division I title game

So, we now know the fate of the De La Salle football team. The Spartans will play Friday night at 8 p.m. against Centennial-Corona in the Division I title game. Grant-Sacramento will play Saturday night against Long Beach Poly in the open division game.

Well, I know I have my opinions and I’m certainly of the opinion that the CIF got it absolutely wrong. I think it’s interesting that the commissioners saw it different than the CalHiSports guys that gave the presentation. I’m listening to the conference call and I think this may be the first time in my career I’ve ever heard someone say strength of schedule worked against De La Salle. I guess there’s a first time for everything.

What does everyone else think?

Congrats to the Nail House!

Just wanted to send out my congratulations to Encinal on a terrific win tonight, 35-28 over Novato. It’s easily the best high school football game I can remember seeing in a looooooong time. Hopefully it will be enough to sneak the Jets into the state title game. Remember to tune in here at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow (actually at this point, it’s later today) and I’ll be live blogging the press teleconference where the selections are announced. See you tomorrow and again, congrats to the Jets (btw…where can I score one of those Nail House t-shirts?)

I’ve noticed that my game story isn’t online on our web site (I’m working on getting that fixed) but it is online on the Mercury News’ site, so here’s the link.

Also, check this story out from the Marin Independent Journal, our sister paper that covers Novato. The Hornets players and coach spoke very respectfully about Encinal. It’s a good read.
