Some breaking news here. I just got word via e-mail from Jonathan Brown that he went on a visit to Boise State and loved his time there and committed to the Broncos. More to come later after I speak with him. He said he’ll be playing safety for Boise. Ironically, he’ll be teammates with Bay Area News Group-East Bay Offensive Player of the Year Joe Southwick, the player Brown beat out for overall Player of the Year honors.

UPDATE: I spoke with Jonathan and here’s what I’ve written up for tomorrow’s paper.

Encinal High football star Jonathan Brown has a new home.

The Bay Area News Group-East Bay Player of the Year orally commited to Boise State on Sunday morning and will join the Broncos next season as a safety.

“I just had a good vibe with all the players,” Brown said Sunday evening after returning from his weekend visit to Boise. “The town is a huge football town. It’s a lot different than the Bay Area. In the Bay Area, there’s the Raiders and Forty Niners. All they have is Boise State football.”

Brown starred as quarterback and linebacker for the Jets this season, leading them to their first North Coast Section title since 1980 when he accounted for all five touchdowns in a 35-28 win over Novato in the Division III championship game on Dec. 13.

He threw for 28 touchdowns and ran for nine more during Encinal’s perfect 13-0 season, but it was his play at linebacker — 92 tackles, eight sacks, two blocked punts — that caught most scouts’ eyes. His strength and tackling ability, along with his explosive speed, made him an ideal candidate to play safety at the next level along with his 6-foot, 205-pound frame.

Brown won’t be able to sign his official letter-of-intent until Feb. 4. He also had offers from Colorado, Air Force and San Diego State, but instead will join San Ramon Valley quarterback Joe Southwick, BANG-EB’s Offensive Player of the Year, with the Broncos.

“That’s where I really wanted to be,” Brown said of Boise.

Brown said the coaching staff will give him the opportunity to compete for immediate playing time when he arrives for camp in July.

“I feel like I can do it,” Brown said of playing as a true freshman.

Brown said he’s excited about having regular games in California against Western Athletic Conference foes San Jose State and Fresno State that his friends and family can attend. He also enjoyed his first experience stepping on the famous blue artificial turf at Bronco Stadium.

“When I walked on it, it felt good.”
