Boys Hoops: San Leandro-O’Dowd move showdown to Chabot College

The battle for the Hayward Area Athletic League boys basketball crown will continue into next week no matter the result of tonight’s game between San Leandro and Hayward. Bishop O’Dowd, who is currently one game behind first-place San Leandro, was scheduled to play the Pirates Wednesday at O’Dowd.

That game has been changed to Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Chabot College. This is a great move since the venue at O’Dowd certainly wouldn’t be able to hold the crowd this game is going to bring in. What a great atmosphere it is going to be out at Chabot on Tuesday. Two classic rivals going at it for a shot at the league title! Doesn’t get much better than that.

I hope O’Dowd guards show up on Tuesday, its crazy the ammount of good guards thats in the HAAL and O’Dowd doesn’t have one. I know someone is going to say Capiti or some other nonsense but their backcourt is garbage. They should try and get the Ali brothers from Tennyson to leave their miserable situation and grow with Brandon Ashley. SL vs Hayward should be a huge game tonight. I hope we get to see a match up between Berry and Cunningham. Because of Haywards lack of size Berry has to guard most teams PF on defense. If thats the case Nasir or Holmstock will guard Jared . I think if Hayward wins tonight it will be a CO-MVP again between Berry and whoever finishes in 1st place.

  • OG Bobby Johnson

SL won Cunningham just sealed MVP even if O’dowd wins Brue doesn’t beat out Cunningham. Hayward had a tough night at the free throw line as well as getting rebounds. Berry looked good but Martin fouled out at the start of the 3rd and none of the other starters showed up. For SL Cunningham and Young both had great games. San Leandro would have won regardless but worth noting the officiating was horrible.

  • derrick

The game was good, berry had a decent game even though he got hung. cunningham will win mvp hands down. regardless if they lose to o dowd. yea about the ali brothers they are good, hameed, quadir and ishii next year its a dynasty. plus transfer daniel almonte a phenom in his own right is comin from sl after being robbed of a varsity spot. haal will be great next year with sl, cv, o dowd and mayb tennyson on top.

  • hold the mayo

i agree with derrick on everything. daniel almonte is going to be a house hold name sooner than later, i saw him play at a aau game nd his length allows him to get anywhere on the floor. nd he has some bounce to go with it. jumpshot is work in progress but he is d1 material, but to me will not be a cunningham type of player. jumpshot isnt good enough. but haal is a league to watch next few years with stars like brandon ashley, hameed ali, rod bobbit, daniel almonte, and others as well

  • dez

Hameed Ali the sophmore is probably goin to San Leandro next year because thts the school closest to him and some family issues

  • observer

Hayward vs SL was a better game than the score suggest. All yr I thought Cunningham was getting special praise because he has already commited to a school but watching him last night I was able to see that his atheleticism really sets him apart from the rest. I thought Berry had a pretty good game he was solid but SL was just to much for them tonight. I asure you Berry is going D-1 not to a large school but he has programs looking at him.

  • Gaucho4life

where are last nights basketball scores?

  • hold the mayo

dez we jus hope hameed doesnt leave, sl really isnt the school for him, too many guards already but whateva happens happens. but dont u want to see him and daniel duo up to be the best in haal?

  • dverdin

the haal has five terrible teams this year and will have more next year sl and hayward lose everyone it is a two team race next year with o’dowd winning it and cv in second then sl and then the league will be six terrible teams unlike the five this year

  • dez

    wht daniel play

  • hold the mayo

daniel almonte is ranked for class of 2011 in california. he is i believe 6’4 170. he is transfering to tennyson nd he is good friends with hameed since the 7th grade. so tennyson will compete for the haal title next year trust me. hameed is good nd daniel is hungry to get on the scene. dez jus look out 4 him

  • dez

wow thts amazing does daniel play for the oakland rebels too

  • OG RIVER

Cunningham showed last night again that he is likeley the BEST guard in Norcal. Roberto Nelson, JC, and the forward from Chi Town will make Oregon State competitive in the PAC 10 for the future. Oh…and about Ali. He will be a Pirate next year. The Pirates won’t be as good as they have been in the last few years but they will still be a 18+ win team and make NCS.

  • dez

    whn he comin to T-High

  • hold the mayo

nah he doesnt have a team right now i believe but he might jus play wit rebels never know. but he is comin for next season but the district still has to approve him.

  • cile

trust me daniel what ever his name is.. sucks…..as a freshmen he played freshmen…ass a sophmore he play jv…he had no chance at playing varsity this year…and if u you he was going to play over Shaheed and jared he is in another world…also he is 6’3 150 lbs.plus this dude doesnt even kno how to shoot..and the reason why he is tranfering is because of grades.

  • BigGreen

The HAAL has not had a dominant player on the next level since Diamond Simpson, and it took him a few years to be D1 ready, and before that E House, that’s a very short list. I gues you could add Gary Hill-Thomas, he had a decent career at Nevada-Reno too!Last season thwe OAL had Kwame Vaughn go to USF, Damon Lillard to Weber State Frank Otis to SMU. PJ Taylor to Lewis and CLark, then this season they aready have 2 sophmores that have committed to Santa Clara, and you have Will Cherry going to Montana, and the list will get longer very soon. So we show wjo is the best week after week, maybe next year they can have a HAAL VS OAL Tournament or something.

  • OG Bobby Johnson

Big green let me adk you this? I agree the oal has a great tradition but let’s say some one organized a sr game Oal againt Haal pick 8 players. You are crazy if you think this year the oal has 5 that could beat. Davion Berry, Jared Cunningham, Rashard Parker, Justin Brue, Shaheed Young, Keith Martin, Jabril Nasir, and Sims from San Leandro.

  • Gotta Love Him

Jared is definitely the most deserving of the MVP this year…and he can thank Shaheed for helping him get there. Yeah, Rashad had a good year, but when you have a sophomore out play you most of the time, especially in big games like the San Leandro Castro Valley game, you really dont seem like the whole package. San Leandro did it this year…and they deserve that league title.

  • DEZ

    OOOO I see

  • hold the mayo

cile who r u?? have u seeen daniel play?? he is beta dan half of the varsity team. the sl team revolves around jared nd dats all. shaheed is ok nd sims is ok. but daniel is the real deal. yea he played frosh last year nd was leading scorer nd jv for a lil this year but he deserves a varsity spot. so once u see him play let me know because u have proably never played ball a day in your life… get back to me

  • Gotta Love Him

Yeah the San Leandro team revolves around Jared, but he cant do it by himself. Its not a one man team, and Jared and the whole team knows that. Every team has that star player, but they all work together to make themselves and that player shine. Who is Daniel?

  • hold the mayo

daniel goes to sl nd he is ranked state wide for class of 011. he is a clone of tayshaun prince nd i tried to tell cile that they robbed him of a varsity spot because of the seniors. he is transfering because of it nd san leandro could suffer next year for it

  • Gotta Love Him

That is the one thing that San Leandro has a problem with, because their whole team are seniors except 2 or 3 players. But Daniel should have waited his turn. That’s what Jared had to do. His freshman year he didn’t get any playing time, and now look where he is at. You just need to wait.

  • hold the mayo

man i understand some people are just impacient nd cant wait. but u never know he might not get approved by the district and has to stay at sl. two years ago i remember seeing him play and i was like thats the future of some program. and recently i seen him in a aau game and i still see the fire nd talent but its like no one is giving him a shot. most players in class of 011 are already shining and he is just sitting back watching it all happen. but sl needs him for next year, because jared is gone

  • Gotta Love Him

It was definitely hard for anyone to shine past all of the seniors in the San Leandro program, because that was their game plan this year. They have so many good seniors that they know are going to get them that W. And they really weren’t willing to take a chance. But you need to stick with what you know works. And playing the seniors definitely worked.

  • hold the mayo

yea ive benn to many of the games nd it does work. hopefully they can get past the first round but its working and dont fix what isnt broke. but on tuesday i think they might wish they had daniel because he knows brandon ashley and played against him many times and he nd him have good battles. but sl is woking what with they have

  • 8200

i hope odowd wins this game san leandro players are a bunch of wannabe thugs san leandro wont make it out of the first round with their team captain jared who is a stat filled way to drop 31 in the first half against the awful san lorenzo team way to distribute the ball statfiller

  • Gotta Love Him

I think the tuesday game is going to say a lot about both programs, but San Leandro has the definite upper hand in that game. They haven’t lost a game since the Castro Valley home game. They just want to finish out the season right, and have a good head into the NCS.

  • Mike

I agree Jared no doubt did some stat filling this year. I guess playing the 1 at the next level is not an option. But his team is in 1st place so I can’t knock it. I don’t know if I would say the SL team is a bunch of thug wannabes because Jared doesn’t say but 2 words and he is a good kid. Don’t know his name because he is garbage but the kid with the dreds that plays for them I think his name is charles is a dirty player. I was him taking cheap shots at hayward players. Not classy!

  • watcher

man i agree a lil bit they do have some dirty players dat cant really play. ive heard of daniel almonte but never seen him play. but i bet he could play ova charles or mostly any1 on that team except for jared nd shaheed

  • derrick

there has benn alot of talkin about this daniel kid. well just to put the word out he is a special talent. but he reaaly cant shoot to save his life. and he only has the length and the bounce and his putbacks. he needs som1 to help him develop his jumpshot or he isnt going to be what he should which is a d1 phenom.

  • Mike

Its sad to me that you have these HS coaches that doesn’t help develop these kids to get them in college. Like SL is not that deep 1 thur 13 that any kid 6-5 needs to be on JV. Haywards coach Mattox is another joke Berry rode the bench his freshman and sophmore yrs because Mattox was riding with upper classmen guards like Jeff Ford who had no chance of going to college. If you ask any player on Hayward they would tell you Berry demolished everyone on their team in practice but couldn’t get any burn, then when he got his shot it seemed like he came out of nowhere when in fact it was his 3rd year on the team.

  • m2000

first of all its evident that BOWD has been doing just fine w/o the backcourt defense, we do need guards which will only make the team that much better than they are. even w/o backcourt defense, they are definitely a contender and a team to reckon wit only havin 3 upperclassmen on the team. they are either blowin out their opponents or losing by a minimal score, they can only get better. BOWD has strict rules, and it doesn’t matta how good u r on the court, if u don’t hav the grades, u don’t get in, as it should be, academics 1st!!!!!!

  • derrick

mike u are exactly on point. sl is a joke because they didnt develop daniel almonte and they will pay for it next year when he is at another school. and berry should have been better than he already is because he wasnt given a chance until last year. give these young guys a chance to make it, daniel almonte, davion berry, and san leandro has juniors that should be on varisty but not given a chance.

  • cile

hey hugo, did u catch the hayward vs SL game?

  • Hugo Bossy

Cile + yeah I saw the game your boy Jared looked good, however I told you that Berry guards forwards on defense he rarely matched up with Jared. SL wins league this year I wish these guys had one more year the Haal loses a lot of power this year.

  • derrick

hugo man its losing some power. we have up and coming players. jared wasnt always a superstar he strted on the bench. we have brandon ashley, richard longruss, daniel almonte, hameed ali, and others. and the sophmore from cv

  • dverdin

The haal does lose alot it was a terrible league this year not saying there weren’t good teams but a league as a whole it was way down from years past three to five six years ago it was 7 or 8 teams deep if you didn’t come to play every night you would lose this years it was blowout city the bottom five were just awful and next year it will be worse with only o’dowd and cv they will blowout everyone they better schedule tough in the preseason

  • derrick

i agree somewhat but sl has a chance to be ok and tennyson will have a two man show with hameed ali and daniel almonte. that might take them to the d2 playoffs they will be better from this year i know 4 sure

  • Hugo Bossy

I’m at this Odowd vs SL game man I hate to say this because these aew kids but Odowds gaurds are GARBAGE!! Its turn over city. Brue is off tonight the only person that showed up for Odowd is Ashley. Brue just played his slim chance of a league MVP away.

  • Mike

I agree Hugo number 10 has to be one of the coaches sons he can’t be Odowds best option at guard.

  • BigGreen

THIS IS IN RSPONSE TO OG BOBBY JOHNSON ABOUT PICKING 8 OAL PLAYERS TO GO AGAINST 8 HAAL PLAYERS, SO HERE’S MY LIST. DAMON POWELL-Mack, WILL CHERRY-Mack, JUSTIN STANLEY-Mack, RICHARD BOSTON-Tech, WESLEY HANSPARD-Tech,TJ TAYLOR-Ohigh,NEFI PERDUM-Skyline, L.GREEN-Casltmont. I WOULD TAKE THESE EIGHT AND GO AGAINST ANY HAAL PLAYERRS YOU COULD COME UP WITH.

  • OG Bobby Johnson

Biggreen that’s a nice line up however I was talking about seniors my 8 haal players were all seniors you have sophmores on your line up.

  • BigGreen

My bad OG I only put in 1 sophmore by mistake, so I’ll just replace him with Omari from Castlemont, and we even get better. I meant to put him in there last time. So either way it goes, i thinbk they could beat them, easily.

  • BigGreen

But I must say the guys from the HAAL are pretty good, but I amnot sure if they are physical enough to match up with the OAL players.
