There is going to be a showcase event next year at Sacramento State that will feature a pair of East Bay teams called: The Battle at the Capital.
It’s a four-game event and this is the lineup (in this order):
1. Sacred Heart Cathedral (San Francisco) vs Franklin (Sacramento)
2. Pittsburg vs Granite Bay
3. Cardinal Newman (Santa Rosa) vs Central Catholic (Modesto)
4. California (San Ramon) vs Del Oro (Loomis)
Game 1 doesn’t carry much local interest, but after that there are three games worth checking out.
Pittsburg is going to be very good next year with running back Erick Dargan and Granite Bay gave Grant its best game of the year.
Cardinal Newman and Central Catholic is what are considered the two best schools for their size in NorCal.
Cal has jumped on the map in the past couple years with an NCS finals appearance two years ago and another competitive team this past year. Del Oro was down this past year (4-6), but had won 50 games in the five years prior to it. Their coaching staff informed Cal coach Tony Sanchez that he expects to be much better next year.
I’ll find out more specifics tomorrow, but just wanted to throw this up here tonight …. Should be a great day of football.
Before plans fell through, there was a tentative plan for another event — this one in the Bay Area — that was going to have Serra (San Mateo) play a school from Arizona, Cal High play Grant-Sacramento, and DLS play Bellevue — plus one additional game. Grant will now be playing Bellevue in Washington.
