UPDATE
Castro Valley had just one shot in the second half, but was able to make its one goal from the first half stand up. The Trojans win 1-0 over Berkeley and will play San Ramon Valley on Saturday at 5 p.m.
Since I have a connection to the Internet here, I figured I might as well provide a halftime update. Castro Valley scored just before the half and holds a 1-0 lead over Berkeley in this first-round North Coast Section 3-A soccer match.
The goal came in the 38th minute by the Trojans’ Ian Silverness. Castro Valley’s Hunter LeBlanc took a shot from about 20-yards out and Berkeley goalkeeper Elder Alegria-Hernandez made a diving stop, but the ball bounced right to Silverness, who was all alone in front of the net. Silverness then fired it home for the score.
Berkeley controlled the ball most of the first half, but Castro Valley has had better chances than the Yellowjackets. Trojans’ star forward Arash Dehdari was fouled twice just outside the penalty box, including once by Elder on a breakway. Both times Berkeley was able to keep the Trojans out of the net on the ensuing free kicks, including a header by Dehdari which grazed the crossbar and went out of bounds.
Castro Valley has taken eight shots on goal, while Berkeley has taken six. Castro Valley goalkeeper Kurtis Louie has four saves, while Elder has made two stops for Berkeley.
