East Bay Boys Volleyball Notebook

Interested in seeing nearly every top boys volleyball team in the East Bay?
Then look no further than the Northgate Tournament this Saturday.

This tourney will have eight teams that are ranked in the Bay Area News Group’s East Bay Boys Volleyball rankings. Those teams are Northgate, De La Salle, Amador Valley, Foothill, California, Las Lomas, College Park and Granada.
“It’s a very strong field,” Northgate coach Jim Changaris said. “It should be a very competitive tournament.”
The field will also include a very good Chico team that made the finals of the Granite Bay Tournament, beating De La Salle along the way, before losing to Jesuit-Sacramento in the finals.
The tournament will be at three sites with games being played at Northgate, Bentley and Ygnacio Valley High Schools starting at 9:00 a.m. The top two teams from the six pools will make up the gold division.
The top six teams out of the gold division will then all be playing Northgate for the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals, starting around 4:00 p.m.
The rest of the field includes Ygnacio Valley, Bentley, Livermore, Salesian, Clayton Valley, Washington, Chinese Christian, Antioch, Berean Christian, Concord, Logan, Valley Christian, Alhambra, Dougherty Valley. There is still one more team to be added.
You can be sure, that out of the field of 24, the team to beat will be Northgate.
The Broncos are 18-0 as of today, ranked No. 1 and won the Deer Valley Tournament, which is the biggest tournament of the early season in the East Bay.
“I’m sure we will have a target on our back because we snuck up on some teams at Deer Valley,” Changaris said. “I’m just hoping we can continue playing well and we have to take it one match at a time.”

The rankings stay the same this week, because there weren’t enough participants in the poll and it would have skewed things. I am sure there will be many more votes after the Northgate Tournament.

i believe you are forgetting a team in the ebal rankings…

  • Matt Smith

Indeed I was. Not sure how the heck that happened, but it’s fixed now.

  • DonFan

yeeeeeeeesh. maybe its best you leave them off…. with that record

have you seen any teams from the ACCAL play? just wondering

  • Matt Smith

I haven’t seen any teams from the ACCAL yet. I hope to soon.
You gotta be an Encinal fan, I suppose? How do they look?

  • Jet4EveR52

Yeap lol I played volleyball last year but they look alright not as good as last year. Lots of new faces the only players back are the 2 twins who played libero and then some from the jv moved up so they are alright.

I only saw their first game against Alameda high, and they played alright but at the end lost it. They just need more practice because the whole team is basically new but Im just rootin for my brother Kawika Baculpo he plays for Alameda High and just want him and his teammates to have a good season.

And I saw their game last week against El Cerrito they slacked off but finally pulled through in the end. But El Cerrito looks pretty good they have a tall player hes African American and looks like he plays basketball because hes fast and is tall. And I know Berkeley and De Anza will be Alamedas toughest competitors like they were to us last year

  • Matt Smith

That is great insight. Geez, you touched on everything. I love it.
    Thanks for the information.

  • Jet4EveR52

No problem, If you keep on writing on VOlleyball I can give you info when Alameda plays the ACCAL but yea your welcome.

So did you follow us(Encinal) last year? Last year we had a fun year almost won the ACCAL title and almost got Second in the Chico Tournament and played pretty well good teams and yea just wondering if you followed us through the year

  • bigmike

Logan is now 5-2 in league play, beating Washington last night in a marathon 3 hour match.

  • ojbigmac

berkeley high as of yesterday is 2-0 in league and has one loss in preseason

  • Jet4EveR52

really just wondering how does Berkeley look? Alameda is 2-0 in league too and iono their full record but they have a couple losses from a tournament they played in.

  • moreau_setter

Moreau is ranked 5th in league(MVAL) but being on the team for the past 4 years seeing all the good volleyball from winning tournaments and 2 NCS titles over those years, I think that you are not cutting Mission(fremont), Logan, and Washington enough slack in the East Bay rankings. I think you will see a lot from these teams in NCS since Northgate is in Div. II.

As for us, we are a team that just graduated 10 seniors, me being the only starting returner. Definately we have some fight in us to compete to win NCS again this year with the new Division format that made Div. III, in my opinion, very weak compared to the other Divisions. We will be watching out for College Prep. and more importantly El molino, who both lost and finished second and third respectively to North Gate in the Mare Island tournament.

  • Matt Smith

I wish I knew how Berkeley looked. That guys comment about them being 2-0 in league is all I know about them. They don’t report scores, unfortunately.

  • Jet4EveR52

I see i see Matt Smith you should head over and watch the Alameda vs De Anza game i think this will be a really good match in the ACCAL 2 good teams

  • Matt Smith

    Hey Moreau Setter,
I just wanted to let you know it’s a coaches poll, so the coaches vote on the top ranked teams. I don’t actually select them.
With that said, I am interesting to see how the MVAL is represented in the NCS playoffs.

  • Moreau_Setter

I understand that, I accidently refered to you in my comment but all I’m saying is that I do not think all the coaches are voting on this poll because surely more MVAL teams would be listed, if not, Mission would be ranked higher. How do they vote I would like to be interested so that I could inform my coach and other coaches.

Just curious but what makes you interested in volleyball and why did you start this blog are you a coach?

  • Ojbigmac

Berkeley High has five returning players from last year, one of which won the “MVP of the league” award last year in the ACCAL, Gabe Levine. A lot of new payers however have joined the team. In addition they have a new coach, in my eyes far better then last years, Aaron Brown.

    who has berkeley beaten?
