For those following MVAL and HAAL baseball/softball. Here are standings, slate and pitching records from this first week of play.
The legal troubles for Russell Otis, the coach of the Dominguez-Compton boys basketball team that McClymonds beat in last year’s CIF Division I state title game, continue to grow. He has been on administrative leave from his coach and AD job this year while under investigation for sexual misconduct toward a player and has now been charged in that case. Now additional charges are being levied for allegedly depositing a sponsorship check from Nike for the basketball program (although he defends that all funds were used for the basketball team) and accepting a stipend for coaching a golf team at Dominguez that doesn’t exist. This all comes just eight years after a 2001 charge of sexual misconduct toward to a player, charges that he was acquitted on. I don’t like to pass personal judgement on people that I don’t personally know, but I have to say I’m amazed this guy still has a coaching job — at least for now.
The Two Geeks come out of hibernation to pump up this weekend’s state basketball championships at Arco Arena in Sacramento. They head west for the first time, visting a first-time entry into the state title games, Salesian.
This is one of those stories that you can’t help but be touched by. After reading Tuesday’s story about McClymonds High’s financial road block to staying in a hotel during their trip to the state finals this weekend, a group of parents from the Monte Vista boys and girls basketball program got together and have compiled $1,100 to donate to the McClymonds program. This is just one of those things that make you truly appreciate how good and generous people can be. I have a story going in tomorrow’s papers and it’s already posted online.
Here is an interesting link to an analysis of a poll done by ESPN on the A-11 offense. It shows that 75 percent of those who participated considered it “innovative” as opposed to “unsporting.”
Our new design for prep sports made its debut today and I thought it would be great to get some feedback from the Prep Corner readers that also receive the newspaper. Let us know what you think of the new layout and if you have any concerns or suggestions for us. Also, let us know what you like!
For those of you who might have read today’s Alameda County notebook about McClymonds High’s struggles to finance its trip to Sacramento to play in the state championship game, there was a mistake in the listed phone number for Mack coach Brandon Brooks. It should’ve been 510-575-4745.
Campolindo head boys soccer coach Jason Maratsos has informed me via email that he will not be back as head coach of the Cougars next season.
