Some happy news for the East Bay baseball coaching community today. De La Salle coach Rick Steen, the longtime San Ramon Valley coach that returned to the game this season after one year of retirement, got his 500th career win today in a 7-0 victory at Livermore. Already one of the legends in East Bay high school baseball circles, Steen reflected a little on the accomplishment.

“To tell you the truth, I don’t want to underplay the accomplishment because coaches want to last that long, but I was really focused on getting this league win,” Steen said.

Steen got 490 of his wins at San Ramon Valley and today’s win made De La Salle 10-8 on the season.

“It’s very special because it puts you in a special class of people that have outlasted the times,” Steen said.

Patrick Keane struck out 10 in five innings of work to lead the Spartans in the win.

Congrats to Coach Steen. DLS could make a serious run at the ncs title this year behind the two starters they have. The EBAL is a close race and will be fun to follow
