I have just returned from the California Interscholastic Federation headquarters, where Piedmont High coaches Kurt Bryan and Steve Humphries and principal Randy Booker presented their petition and facts to ask the CIF to run a three-year pilot program to study the A-11 offense, which became illegal when the NFHS amended its rules a couple months ago.
Last year, the San Ramon Valley High School boys lacrosse team went 20-3, easily winning the North Coast Section title.
This year, they lost three times in their first six games, but don’t underestimate the Wolves.
Well, the Stampede is all done for 2009 and Archbishop Mitty is your champion. They won the title game 5-2 over Sheldon. Keilani Ricketts struck out 20 and hit a 3-run home run.
In the third-place game, Livermore won 2-1 on a squeeze bunt by Caitlin Taylor in the 10th inning. The bunt scored Katie Keller.
I’ll have more for ya on Monday. The story should be up on the main web site soon.
I know we’ve got some softball fans out there, so I wanted to give you the quick heads up on which teams are through to tomorrow’s semifinals. In one semifinal, Foothill will play Archbishop Mitty-San Jose. In the other, Sheldon-Sacramento will play the tournament host, Livermore. Foothill-Mitty is at 3 p.m., Sheldon-Livermore is at 3:15.
I was out at Robertson Park this morning and took in Foothill’s 2-1 win in nine innings over Spanish Springs-Sparks. Great game, highlighted by extra-inning RBIs by Morgan McKinnon and Jennifer Ong. The game against Mitty is a rematch of an earlier game this season, a game Mitty won 5-1.
Here are the All-East Bay boys soccer teams. First, second and third.
I keep getting asked who the new coach at Cal High is going to be so I thought I’d throw out an update …
The school has received at least 10 applications and plans to start interviewing candidates next week. Applications have come in from as far as the East Coast and they will continue to accept applications until a new coach has been hired.
Three confirmed applicants:
–Bill Hoefs, The Cal High freshman coach who was the head coach at Washington for two years before being replaced by current coach Ken Wittmer.
–Sean Manuel, Varsity assistant coach. Played with former coach Tony Sanchez at New Mexico State and was drafted by the 49ers as a tight end in 1996.
–Aaron Becker, San Ramon Valley JV coach. PE teacher at SRV, played at SRV then Chabot and LaVerne.
CalHiSports.com released it’s 31st annual All-state boys basketball team on Tuesday. The East Bay region landed one player on each of the three 10-man teams.
Just got off the phone with John Angell, who has been re-hired as the head football coach at John Swett. Angell stepped down in 2006, citing the deplorable field conditions and a lack of commitment to keeping his players healthy.
For those following MVAL and HAAL baseball/softball. Here are standings, slate and pitching records.
