East Bay Boys Lacrosse Notebook

With just a week left in the regular season, let’s take a look at the playoff scenario.

Starting with the East Bay Athletic League, I have to imagine that the top five teams are going to get in. Amador Valley, De La Salle, Monte Vista, San Ramon Valley and Foothill all seem like shoe-ins to me at this point. I know this is completely obvious, so I won’t spend much time talking about it.

Berkeley and Clayton Valley, as champions of the Bay Shore Athletic League and Diablo Valley Athletic League respectively, are also going to get in. Acalanes appears to have the Diablo Foothill Athletic League wrapped up as well.

One bid will be taken by a team out of the Bay Counties League and one out of the Marin County Athletic League. Right now, University-San Francisco, Cardinal Newman and Marin Academy are in the running for the BCL and Redwood has locked up the MCAL. Let’s say, for arguments sake, that it will be University from the BCL.

This would leave just two at-large spots, so we’re gonna take a look by league at the teams that have a shot at an at-large playoff bid.

BCL: Cardinal Newman and Marin Academy probably need to win the league to have a chance.

BSAL: Piedmont was a playoff team last year, went 10-7 this year and has a good win over Miramonte.

DFAL: Miramonte and Las Lomas both have a good chance. The Knights have beat Miramonte and Miramonte has a win over San Ramon Valley to its credit.

DVAL: The only other team besides Clayton Valley with any interest is College Park. The Falcons just don’t have the wins or the SOS.

EBAL: If the top five teams from this league don’t get in, it will be a shame. All eight teams rank in the NCS’ top nine in strength of schedule. In truth, California could probably be a tough team to deal with in the playoffs. This league is the real deal. Against other NCS teams not in the EBAL, this league went 19-4. If you take out last place Granada, the league went 18-2 against teams from other NCS leagues.

MCAL: Novato’s only good win is against Piedmont, who is also on the bubble. It appears that it’s going to be hard for them to make it.

My prediction is that Miramonte and Las Lomas snag the remaining two at-large bids with Piedmont and Novato being the last two teams out. With the Highlanders win over Miramonte, or Novato’s win over Piedmont, it could go the other way.

There is a change at the top ladies and gentleman. The Amador Valley, now winners of nine straight matches, knocked off De La Salle in an intense 11-10 game in Concord last Tuesday, and move up to No. 1. Monte Vista, which took the Spartans to overtime the first time they played, knocked them off the second time in another overtime game to climb to No. 2 this week.

Acalanes climbs up to No. 5 as the Dons continue to win, while Clayton Valley slides up a spot to No. 9.
