East Bay Boys Volleyball Notebook

A lot has been made, and for good reason, about the volleyball teams in the East Bay Athletic League.
Without a doubt, that league has the top talent and the best teams from top to bottom. So much so, in fact, that we are probably going to see five playoff teams come out of that league.
But that doesn’t mean is there isn’t quality volleyball in some of the other leagues, and in specific the Alameda Contra Costa Athletic League has two very good teams.

Both Alameda and De Anza High Schools are sailing into the North Coast Section’s Division II playoffs while jockeying for the top spot in the league.
“I believe the ACCAL does have a lot more to offer than it is credited for,” De Anza coach Fou Mikaio said. “The East Bay is just now making some club teams and now the ACCAL top players will be able to play in the off-season, which they couldn’t have done in the previous years. All of the players on my team started playing their freshman year with no previous experience and because of the lack of club teams is why I think the ACCAL isn’t recognized as much.”
Alameda head coach Steve McAdam sees the league as a work in progress, but going in the right direction.
“I think that boys volleyball in the ACCAL is a mixed bag right now,” McAdam said. “We have a lot of knowledgeable coaches who are re-creating some strong programs, but there are still some schools that are a couple of years away from being competitive. De Anza has been particularly successful inside and outside of the ACCAL this season and that is opening some eyes. Alameda is improving quickly and Berkeley has some excellent players. However, ACCAL teams need to perform consistently at tournaments before the ACCAL can be considered on a par with other leagues in the area.”
As far as the league race goes, the Dons hold the lead right now with a 27-5 overall record and a 6-0 mark in ACCAL play.
“I believe this is the best team I have ever coached because they have so much chemistry,” Mikaio said. “And the two captains, Chan Saephan and Luke Lipscomb really do play the role as captains. Luke is clutch in that he usually can end the game with a devastating kill and Chan has the smarts and keeps the team together like glue.”
Alameda is 20-5 overall and 5-1 in league action and is doing with a young team and an up tempo style.
“I think we have a very competitive team, even though we consist primarily of juniors and sophomores,” McAdam said. “What makes us competitive is our aggressive approach to the game, concentrating on jump serves and a fast offense.”
Now the Dons and Hornets just need to wait to find out what happens at Saturday’s NCS seeding meeting, and from there the playoff run will begin.
And then, perhaps, the ACCAL will really make some noise.

Rankings

Amador Valley is a very hot team right now and moves up another spot to No. 5. De La Salle and Deer Valley swap places after the Spartans beat the Wolverines in four games last week, and Campolindo and Las Lomas swap spots as well after the Cougars topped the Knights in a Diablo Foothill Athletic League showdown.
Head-Royce continues to get respect, moving up one spot to No. 12. Logan appears in this week’s poll, reaching No. 15.

  • GoMVAL

last year div 1 had 12 slots and ebal was limited to its league champ + 3 at-large. this year div 1 has only 8 slots, and nobody knows what’s going to happen.

  • sets the ball

i am having a hard time with logan and los lomas in the top 15. los lomas hardly played anyone and logans record is lower than heritages. heritage is 11-2 and has played teams from the ebal and also northgate. i would love to play los lomas and logan to settle the score on who is better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jet4Ever52

Oh yea NCS is going to look good this year cant wait to see Alameda play.

  • bigmike

    To Sets the Ball:
Logan has also played many EBAL teams this year. Foothill (4 times), California (1 time), and Amador Valley (1 time). True they have not played Northgate, but they have played Head Royce- a team many see as one of the stronger teams in NCS this year- and beat them. Don’t sell them short, Logan has not at all back away from competition.

  • chilibean

Logan has lost to every decent team they played (including Clayton Valley). They dont have a chance of making ncs. Yes, they beat HR, but that is a D3 school…

  • sets the ball

    TO BIG MIKE AND CHILIBEAN
IST OF ALL WE PLAYED ST PAT/ST VINCENT WHO ARE A D3 TEAM AND 8-0 IN THERE LEAGUE. WE BEAT THEM AND VALLEY CHRISTIAN ALSO. CLAYTON VALLEY IS NOTHING TO BRAG ABOUT AT ALL. THERE AN AVERAGE TEAM AT 17-17 AT BEST. HEAD ROYCE IS ANOTHER D3 TEAM LIKE ST PATS/ST VINCENT, AND WHO DID THEY PLAY. BOTTOM LINE IS WINS AND LOSES WITH NO HIDING ANYTHING, AND TOURNAMENTS AND TEAMS PLAYED. CHECK OUT MAX PREP SPORTS FOR THE REAL STATS OF GAMES PLAYED. GAMES WON AND LOST.
OTHER TEAMS WE HAVE PLAYED IS DEER VALLEY AND MONTE VISTA AND DEER VALLEY WON THE LEAGUE YESTERDAY BY DEFEATING US, HERITAGE. LOS LOMAS AND LOGAN AND HEAD ROYCE, I WOULD LOVE TO PLAY AND SEE WHO IS BETTER. WHO KNOWS MAYBE A NCS GAME MIGHT BE THERE. WE PLAY ANTIOCH AT HERITAGE TODAY AT HERITAGE. ITS OUR SENIOR NITE AND WERE PUMPED TO WIN AND END THE SEASON AT 12-3 IN LEAGUE AND 18-12 OVERALL. HERITAGE JUST WANTS RESPECT AND TO BE IN NCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • sets the ball

heritage beat antioch in 3 games. the seniors had a good time on senior nite and ended up 12 wins , 3 looses in league. now its a wait and see for ncs and maybe a pratice game or something before ncs.
    go heritage patriots!

  • jet4ever52

hey guys alameda high won the accal last night in 5 games yes! ncs baby

  • vbfanc6

Alameda and Heritage are both average teams in my opinion. They just both happen to be in weak leagues. Thats why their records are the way they are. Try being in the EBAL or DVAL or any other league. I don’t think their records would be even as close as they are right now.

  • in2vollybll

sorry that’s incorrect jet4ever52, they had tied de anza with that win and de anza beat them today (friday) in 5 games, so the league title goes to de anza but alameda will still probably end up in ncs…

  • in2vollybll

uhhhh no. de anza won the title game soooo they get the automatic entry to ncs but alameda still has a chance at ncs

  • sets the ball

ball of confusion! it says de anza beat alameda on friday and that there going to ncs because they won the league. another game , head-royce losses to college prep so who won that league. head – royce lost and that will hurt them for ncs and the top 15.
heritage beat college prep in the lmc tournament 2-1.
my questions are alameda and head royce, are they going to ncs? is head royce knocked out of the top 15 by losing to college prep? what is the new top 15?

  • sets the ball

what is the overall record for logan?7/8 wins with 14/15 losses? they beat washington but lost to mission san jose. has logan beaten anybody? has head royce beaten anybody?

  • Prep Fan

The seeding meeting for NCS is going on right now, so we should know the brackets later today. NCS games start on Tuesday.

  • SETS THE BALL

ok details details! does anyone know anything on ncs?
topseeds and who is playing who?

  • sets the ball

HEY VBFANC6, SORRY WE MADE NCS! DID YOUR SCHOOL MAKE IT? LOGAN DIDNT AND I AM SORRY TO HEAR THAT COLLEGE PARK DID NOT. IF ANYONE SEES OR HEARS FROM KYLE FROM COLLEGE PARK TELL KYLE THAT KYLE THE SETTER FROM HERITAGE SAYS GOOD LUCK. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN FUN TO HAVE ANOTHER KYLE VS KYLE IN NCS!

  • sets the ball

WITH LOGAN AND COLLEGE PARK NOT IN NCS, WHAT WILL BE THE NEW TOP 15 ? I AM SURPRIZED WITH CLAYTON VALLEY GETTING IN, LUCKY. MAN. I WISH WE COULD PLAY LOS LOMAS 1ST THEN NORTHGATE, O WELL!

  • sets the ball

ok lets here about a new top 15 , since logan and college park are not in ncs! those 2 teams should be out of the top 15 and replaced with heritage and alameda. also heritages record is 18-12 overall and we did play teams from the ebal and northgate and college park. we also went 5-0 in d-3 teams.
