Just got off the phone with Salesian High’s Desmond Simmons, the All-East Bay Player of the Year. He confirmed reports that he has indeed given his oral commitment to play basketball at the University of Washington. Here’s what I’ve written up for tomorrow’s paper.

Salesian High’s Desmond Simmons made a big splash across the East Bay during a breakout junior season that culminated in a California Interscholastic Federation Division IV state basketball championship.
Now the All-East Bay Player of the Year will look to make a splash in the Pac-10.
Simmons, a 6-foot-7 small forward, gave his oral commitment to play at the University of Washington on Monday night after making an unofficial visit to the campus on Friday.
“After visiting the school and sitting down and talking to the coaches one-on-one, I got a good vibe,” Simmons said. “I felt confident that was the school that best fit me.”
Simmons averaged 18.2 points and 14.2 rebounds for the Pride during a 31-4 season that ended with a scintillating 65-64 win over Bishop Montgomery-Torrence in the state championship game. Simmons lit up Arco Arena with 31 points and 19 rebounds in that victory.
Scout.com lists Simmons as the 18th best small forward prospect in his class. He chose Washington over Oregon State and Saint Mary’s among others.
“It’s very exciting and humbling at the same time,” Simmons said. “Going to a good program like that with a lot of guys as talented as you are, it’s going to be a lot of hard work to make sure you get there and are able to do something.”
