Live North Coast Section championship coverage

By Jimmy Durkin

Hey folks, we’re at it again. I’ll be at the Amador Valley-De La Salle baseball game at 5 p.m. and my Twitter updates will go straight to here. I’ll try to get Michael Bower to provide some news and notes via Twitter from the NCS Bay Shore track meet at Castro Valley and I’ll see if we can get some others to provide updates. I know Chace Bryson will be at Arroyo-Clayton Valley baseball. A reminder again that we’ll only be firing Twitter updates into here for your convenience and nobody will be available to approve or answer questions.

  12. groundskeeper Says:

Arroyo was one out away from pulling the upset. It was one of the best playoff games I’ve seen. Both teams played with tons of heart. Great year Arroyo you overachieved especially after having only 2 returning starters from last years exceptional squad. Look out for the sophmore ace from CV #5 Chaz Meadows. He brings it…

NCS Lax Final – Monte Vista v. De La Salle
DLS was tough today, beating a scrappy Monte Vista team 12-7. DLS got out to a 4-1 first quarter lead, then went into the half 4-2. DLS then lit it up in the 3rd quarter, up 9-5, then coasted to a 12-7 win.
Nick Richards, DLS’s senior who will play for Penn next fall, had 4 goals and 3 assists, and held MV’s FOGO, John Solomon, pretty much even on face-offs. Teddy Wilm was great in goals for DLS. It was too much toughness, size, and grit for MV today. DLS played their best game of the year, and MV didn’t. Simple. The two teams split two OT games during the year. Today it was DLS playing their “A” game and MV playing their “B” game. Too many big, strong seniors on the DLS side.

    Great game.

  14. Ryan Says:

I heard Novato 9, Campo 3. Campo led 2-0 in the 4th, and then Novato really lit up Gold and Robinson.

  15. Photo Moment Says:

Arroyo is the better team, they lost but only because of two infield hits and some poor calls. Both teams played there hearts out but Arroyo looked and played better.

  16. dlsfan Says:

What a comeback from DLS. Didn’t play their best today but managed a win. Good luck against Cal. The old BVAL is doing well.

    What calls went against Arroyo?

  17. dlsfan Says:

Congrats to DLS LAX….Huge win vs. Monte Vista

  18. LuvHSBaseball Says:

Here’s a thought provoking question for all…does size matter?…in HS Baseball… how would the remaining DII teams fare against the remaining DI teams?

  19. fan Says:

Actually more calls went for Arroyo then against. Don’t whine about 2 infield hits and a bad call. How about back to back blooper hits to get 2 runners on base, then a very clearly foul ball hit down 3rd base that’s called fair. I think Arroyo had more go their way then against, and I would not call them the better team. Do agree that both teams played hard and it was quite a game to watch. Congratulations to both teams for one heck of a season

  20. HSbbguru Says:

After watching Casa Grande tonight I would definitely say they could beat any team in the BVAL or ebal. However so could CV and Alameda. If you put DLS, DV, Freedom, CV, CG, and Alameda in one bracket I would have to pick Casa Grande VS DLS as the last two standing. Size doesn’t matter when it comes to Division 1 teams and the top four or five teams in D2 and D3

GREAT WIN LLHS!!! With a major upset regarding the so called “HR/foul ball controversy” in the 3rd inn.by CV, the LLHS girls really got their minds and game in sync and came through. Port not only pitches an A1 game, she hits for power and produces game winningrbi’s to boot! With a shake up in the starting line-up, the LL girls once again proved they can overcome any changes and adversity thrown at them. Case in point Brymner is in top form still grieving the sudden and tragic loss of her father only weeks ago. Speedster and (usually) lead off hitter Vandenson realiably knocked out a swift dbl with an rbi early on in the game. This LLHS team will be up and comers for quite sometime IMHO

  23. GrizzlieBBFan Says:

The only difference in D1 vs D2 is enrollment size. There are fantastic baseball players at all levels. I know in the past, Clayton Valley has done well against larger sized schools. They have a consistent program in baseball. I would imagine that Arroyo is very close to enrollment size to go to D1.

  24. ProudAVFan Says:

Durkin you must be a DLS fan. Your write-up in the paper this morning really proves it. The music there was quite irritating and the “heroics” of Perio was quite embarassing. Coach Steen agrees with the way he ran around the bases? Definitely not the way our AV team would “act” like. This all coming from DLS! Goes to show you that $$$ doesn’t buy everything.

  25. junior Says:

baseball is unique in team sports in that one dominant pitcher performance can win a game. of course, a little offense helps (ask MV), but pitching is so important that almost any team (with the right pitcher) can beat anyone.

  26. HSbbguru Says:

    Junior, VERY VERY TRUE

  27. Ballfan Says:

I understand (few reporters and a distant venue), but was still disappointed that the St. Mary’s/Lick Wilmerding Div IV qtr final appeared to be the only NCS playoff game Sat that didn’t have a story or even a box score posted. For those following the Panthers, the BSAL or Div IV here is the line score, box score and highlights:

    R H E
    Lick 000 000 1 1 3 2

    SM 020 032 X 7 9 0

Lick: Yankowski, Cory(5) and Foley; SM: Kershner and Elliot, Malatesta (7)

SM Highlights: Kershner CG, ER, 6K, BB, 3H; Syren 2X3; Wilder 2X3, 2B, RBI; Chechetti 2 RBI, McCree 3 SB; Richard 1X1, 2B

St. Mary’s takes on second seed Justin-Sienna in the Semis in Napa on Wed. at 5 PM.

  28. Jimmy Durkin Says:

I’m not sure how my AV-DLS story makes me a DLS fan, especially since I talked about how ugly both teams (including DLS) played, but every one is entitled to their opinion. Since that was the first time I’ve covered either team (I work out of the Tribune and generally cover Oakland area teams), I couldn’t have fewer ties to either team. If your upset that I didn’t write about the annoyance of the music, that’s not part of the game and there would be no reason for me to mention that. If I did (which I never would), it would be at the expense of mentioning what happened in the actual game.

    Ballfan,
Unfortunately I don’t think we got a call to report the results of the St. Mary’s game on Saturday. Since the game was out of the area we couldn’t have anyone there, so we had to rely on a call. Thanks for posting the box here for everybody and hopefully we’ll be able to get something from Napa on Wednesday.

  29. Ballfan Says:

No live coverage of tonight’s games? No twitter?

  30. Falcon Says:

Freedom wins 10-8 over Deer Valley after scoring 9 runs in the 6th.

  31. SoftballBob Says:

Wild, wild, wild win for Falcons at FHS!!! Already posted as 10 – 8, but there were four bombs, three by DV and on grand slam by Freedom’s D’Amico to push 9 run inning to 10 – 8 Freedom lead!! Starting pitcher Austin Wiggins hit two bombs himself, as the other DV HR was by Dante Redhead!

Luquet left starting pitcher, Wiggins, in way too long. Late reliever Eagle did good job shutting Freedom hitters down, but brought in 1/2 inning too late?

DV jumped out to 7 – 0 lead, then gave up one about the fourth. With DV leading 7 – 1 in top of sixth, Freedom plates 9 with about six balls in the infield, three hits, one error, and one that could have gone as hit or error? This rally included a 2B and a Grand Salami for D’Amico!!!

Freshman reliever Joe Navilhon, replaced starter Jordan Alexander, and pithced 4 1/3 effective innings giving up only the 2nd bomb to Wiggins.

Fun game, and worth the NCS price of admission.

  32. Friends that care Says:

Not to change the subject but what about Track NCS 400 meter runner from Tennyson High School Alex Roache. He is going to NCS. He deserves some publicity for HAAL.
