I said those are the guys typically playing in those games. There’s a few D-1 players occasionally in those games. And for the record, Burfict is going to Arizona State.

Unfortunately, it’s really not all that uncommon for there to be a lot of fighting going on in all-star football games. I believe there was a game in Monterey County that was cancelled because of repeated fights. I once covered the Charlie Wiedemeyer classic in Santa Clara county and there was quite a bit of extracurricular activities.

When you think about it, it’s not that surprising. Typically, the players playing in the game are graduated seniors who are not playing at the next level — or at least not in Division I. The college coaches of those players aren’t likely to let them play in an all-star game that could result in injury. So you often have a lot of players playing in their final organized football game, with little to no repercussions for misconduct since they can’t get suspended by their school. I’m not saying all players go in with this mindset, but there certainly are some who do. Hopefully, there won’t be similar problems in the reincarnation of the Alameda vs. Contra Costa game.
