30 Questions To Kickoff: 2009

Hello to all the high school football fans across the East Bay:

By our count, this coming Tuesday will signal the 30-day mark before 2009 Prep Football season will begin in earnest across the East Bay. (That will be Sept. 4, for anybody who was unsure). Thus, it will be time to begin our Prep Corner countdown feature that we’ve termed 30 Questions to Kickoff.

Concord High’s Wills passes away

Concord High softball coach Jerry Wills, who led the Minutemen to the North Coast Section playoffs in each of his eight seasons as head coach, died Wednesday due to complications from lung disease, his wife Beatrice said.

Carlson medals at Worlds

Las Lomas High’s Kasey Carlson finished third in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke Tuesday at the FINA World Championships with a time of 1:05.75. She was seeded seventh entering the final and won the bronze medal from lane 1. The USA’s Rebecca Soni won the race with a time of 1:04.93.

Former San Lorenzo football coach dies

Dick Valois, who guided the San Lorenzo High football team to its only North Coast Section title in 1977, died of cancer at his home in Ashland, Oregon on Monday. He was 75.

 

Valois was the head coach at San Lorenzo from 1976-1983 and was considered an offensive mastermind by his peers, drawing comparisons to former San Francisco 49ers coach and West Coast Offense innovator Bill Walsh.

Three local wrestlers notch national titles

Liberty’s David Klingsheim, De La Salle’s Joey Moita and College Park’s Orry Elor all won national titles at the USA Wrestling Greco-Roman National Tournament in Fargo, N.D. today.

Allard in Under Armour All-American game

I’m getting to this a little late, but figured it was noteworthy nonetheless. Today is the Under Armour All-American softball game at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. And, as she did last year, recent Deer Valley grad Emily Allard is participating. Allard is set to attend Northwestern in the fall.

I’ll post results from the game tomorrow.

AC Track Club Needs Help

A group of local athletes from the Alameda Contra Costa County Track Club will be competing in the 2009 USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina from July 28 – Aug. 2. Only a shortage of money is keeping the track club from going.

AC Track Club coach TJ Williams is hoping the community can chip in to make sure all the kids will be able to make the trip. Williams is taking donations and also selling raffle tickets to try to raise the money. For more information or to donate, contact Williams at 510-872-8232.

Track club seeks help

The C.A. Track Club, a youth team based in Oakland, qualified 16 athletes for the Junior Olympic Nationals from July 28-Aug. 2 in Greensboro, North Carolina. However, the club only has enough money to send 10 of those athletes to the nationals. Alameda County wins All-Star game

Hey everyone. Sorry for not updating at halftime. The Alameda County All-Star football team won tonight’s game at Los Medanos College, beating Contra Costa 13-0. Castlemont’s Aaron Horne scored on a 47-yard touchdown pass by San Leandro’s Travis Gardner and California’s LeRoy Green scored on a 4-yard run. If memory serves, Horne was named the offensive MVP and Bishop O’Dowd’s Kevin Cooper was named the defensive MVP. Here’s the box, and you can read all about it in tomorrow’s paper.
