With his senior year still ahead of him, Redwood Christian High star pitcher A.J. Vanegas orally committed to Stanford today.
The 6-foot-3, right-hander with a fastball that ranges from 90-93 MPH went 9-2 with a 1.20 ERA and posted100 strikeouts in 52 1/3 innings of work in his junior year. He guided the Eagles to the North Coast Section Division V championship game, their first section title game appearance in school history.
It has been quite a few weeks for Vanegas. He was also selected to play in the Aflac All-American High School Baseball Classic at Petco Park in San Diego on Aug. 16 at 5 p.m. He was the only Northern California player selected to the West squad, which has seven states represented. Vanegas was also selected for a tryout in North Carolina in September for the USA Baseball 18U National Team, and was the only Bay Area player to be invited.
