30Q-2-KICKOFF (No.14, Part 1) HAAL Race Should be Fun

We are still a little ways out before kickoff of the 2009 season, but I did my best to break down the Hayward Area Athletic League at this point. A lot of coaches are still learning their own rosters, but I was still able to get a pretty good idea how this season might play out. As most of you know, it really isn’t that hard in the HAAL. You got San Leandro and Bishop O’Dowd followed by the usual sleepers: Hayward and Castro Valley. Then there is the rest. Anyway, enjoy!
What can you expect from the HAAL this season?
The Hayward Area Athletic League was down last year compared to the rest of the East Bay, and it will be down again this year. However, the race to the league crown could be one of the most exciting ones in recent years.
As usual, the team everyone will be chasing is defending champion San Leandro. But the Pirates will certainly be in a rebuilding season (like most of the HAAL) after losing QB Travis Gardner, WRs Demitrius Owens, Dwaine Simpson, and Lenny Jones (although, I hear Jones could be back for a fifth year. That is not confirmed) to graduation. Also, RB Cory Howard is gone.
Howard and Simpson were also key pieces to the San Leandro secondary. The defense suffers other key losses in LB Jamie Summerhill, OL/DL Charles Leno, DE Ricky Aliifua and DL Magdaleno Meraz. So, there are big holes to fill at San Leandro.
The offense for the Pirates will fall directly on the back of returning starting RB George Roberson. Roberson will have to be a workhorse like Tyler Mason was out of the backfield a few years ago for San Leandro. Roberson can catch and run well and I expect him to put up big numbers this year.
Senior RB/LB Brian Morales should also play a huge role in helping the Pirates defend their league title. He was a first-team all-league linebacker last year, and should provide help to Roberson out of the backfield this season. I haven’t seen or heard of any star newcomers, but it is still early and I am sure San Leandro has some studs that will make an impact (throw out some names if you got them).
I expect San Leandro to start the season 0-2 since it is playing powerhouses Bellarmine Prep-San Jose in Week 1 and Valley Christian-San Jose in Week 2. I think the Pirates should handle Chavez-Stockton in Week 3.
Bishop O’Dowd should be right on heels of the Pirates (I feel like I say that every year, but this year the Dragons really should be!).
The Dragons lost superstar linebacker/tight end Chris Martin for his senior season. The Notre Dame-bound Martin decided to finish out his senior season at Grandview High in Colorado.
But that drama aside, the Dragons return the HAAL’s top RB in Mario Brown. The speedster does it all. He returns kickoffs, punts, plays RB and safety. Expect to see Super Mario, as he has been called, streaking down the sideline plenty of times this year. The O’Dowd offensive line is big, experienced and deep. QB Matt Balich will be back this season, too. Brown vs. Roberson on Oct. 31 is the game any regular high school football fan will want to be at this year. If there was ever a year that O’Dowd has caught San Leandro, this could be it.
Who are potential sleeping giants?
The Pirates and Dragons are the two favorites, but I wouldn’t count Hayward out. The Farmers played nearly the entire season without coach Bill Bishop on the sideline last year. Bishop was in the hospital with kidney problems and didn’t return to the sideline until late in the season, when Hayward won its final four contests and just missed the playoffs.
The key losses for the Farmers are RB/CB Dominique Jackson, RB Justin Gaines, RB Eleasaro Niuatoa, LB Conrad Creedon, C Virgil Hart, and DL Quinn Perry. That is a lot of RBs to lose, but I was impressed with the underclassmen at that position last year.
RBs Carl Yates and John Hughes could keep the running game afloat. I am not sure who the QB is going to be this season, but Andre Alberty did an outstanding job last year running the offense and he returns as a senior. Ashawndaus Woods is very athletic and could bring some versatility to the position for the Farmers. Woods is also a force on the defensive side of the ball. The Farmers definitely have a strong chance to compete with Bishop O’Dowd and San Leandro this season and I expect them to make the NCS Division II playoffs.
There have been some questions about Castro Valley. The Trojans have a new coach this year (Nic McMaster), but I think it is going to take some time for this program to get back on track.
The Trojans, who went 2-8 last season, had a very feeble offense and I don’t see how it will get on track after just one year. QB Mike Rojas is returning and so is WR Darnell Reed. Reed reminds me a lot of former San Lorenzo star Michael Calvin, who now plays at Cal. Reed has speed, size (6-foot-1, 182-pounds) and a ton of athleticism. I expect Castro Valley to throw a ton of jump balls for Reed.
Other than that, I don’t see where Castro Valley will find its offense. Dan Heka is the only returning RB and it will take more than him to carry the ground game. The upside for the Trojans is the school has around 4,500 students. That should make it a lot easier to plug in some talented players right away.
What about the rest of the HAAL?
Arroyo will try to rally around returning QB Brett Judson, who probably is the most talented QB in the league. Arroyo did lose FB and workhorse Mark Kendig, but starting RB Neil Buac returns and should be able to carry the running game. The offensive line will be inexperienced and could be the downfall of the Dons.
Mt. Eden is in for a tough season after losing the HAAL Offensive Player of the Year RB Joshua Jackai. The Monarchs have traditionally ran an old-school offense, which features about three plays: run right, run left, and run up the gut. But that might slowly be changing under the direction of second-year coach George Mitsopolous. I expect to see this team throw the ball at least 10 times a game this season rather than twice a game. That being said, I have no idea who the starting QB or RB is going to be.
Tennyson will put most of its workload on returning RB/LB T.J. Ner. Ner is probably the third-best RB in the league behind Brown and Roberson. The Lancers are going to miss QB Max Carmona and will have to hope a first-year starter will be able to run the offense without too many mistakes. Newcomer Johnny Ray should be the leading WR and the speedy Torrance Shanklin will be a deep threat. I predicted the Lancers to get to the playoffs last year and they just missed out. This year I won’t say Tennyson will make the playoffs, so we should find out if I jinxed them last season.
Finally, we can’t forget about San Lorenzo. The Rebels went 1-7 in league and 3-7 overall last season. I expect more of the same this year. The player to watch on San Lorenzo is potential division I recruit William Fukofuka. The defensive end has a high-powered motor and should be easy to recognize at 6-foot-3, 260-pounds. He should help offset the loss of the Defensive Player of the Year Tevita Mafi.
Who are the league’s Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year favorites?
You have start with Brown at Bishop O’Dowd when talking about the HAAL Offensive Player of the Year. I expect Brown to touch the ball around 35 times a game and to produce plenty of offense running behind that big offensive line of the Dragons. Roberson at San Leandro is the other candidate to challenge Brown. I think Brown will put up bigger numbers than Roberson simply because Brown will touch the ball more often. But it could come down to which team wins the league title.
Last year’s Defensive Player of the Year came from San Lorenzo and this season’s probably will, too. Defensive end Fukofuka should be a force for the Rebels. I expect Rebels coach Jacob Wright to let Fukofuka roam the field from numerous positions. Also, competing for the award will be Brian Morales at San Leandro and Ashwandous Woods at Hayward. Those are the three the ring a bell right away.
Prediction (What fun would it be if I didn’t have this for you to blast me about?)
1. San Leandro — Very young and inexperienced, but I think the Pirates still have enough to beat O’Dowd.
2. Bishop O’Dowd — Brown will have an outstanding season behind that big offensive line.
3. Hayward — Always a dangerous squad and had plenty of momentum at the end of last year. My sleeper alert!
4. Castro Valley — I figure there has to be some talent coming in out of all those kids at that school.
5. Tennyson — Coach Terry Smith never fails to impress me. I can see this team sneak up to fourth place.
6. Arroyo — Offensive line is a question mark, but I am high on Judson at QB and Buac is a solid RB.
7. San Lorenzo/Mt. Eden — This will be quite the battle.

Tennyson’s problems start with Terry Smith. He soesn’t have a Shotgun QB but he is going to stay in it anyway instead of matching his system to his personnel. SLZ needs to do something or Jacob Wright needs to step down. The league is down so he should be 6-4 atleast. They have some good looking athletes & their kids seem pretty dedicated so whats the problem? It has to be coaching.
A rank of 4th is pretty high for a CV with a first year coach at whether he was there last year or not. They’re going to be under .500 I’d give him a year to establish a system. Mt. Eden has had trouble getting their kids to dedicate so I wouldn’t expect much.
August 18th, 2009 at 11:09 am
Tennyson has some good looking kids and so does SLZ. Like what Roeper said it must be the coaching because they both have big and good looking squads but it seems like they can’t put it all together. SLZ for one has some good talent there but they still lose games year after year. It is no reason why these two teams can’t push for the three or four spot every year just based talent.
August 18th, 2009 at 11:17 am
Roeper, how do you think the kids became so dedicated at SLZ? Like coaching has nothing to do with the dedication? Come on man, don’t bash HIGH SCHOOL coaches (working for free) unless you reveal who you really are…coward.
August 18th, 2009 at 11:54 am
I’m obviously right & you know it. SLZ was a NCS championship game school before Wright took over so there is talent & kids want it. Not my fault you can’t win more then 3 games. How could I be a coward when I tell the truth? I’m just a high school football fan with an opinion. Did I touch a nerve…lol
Win a game knights.
August 18th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
san leandro has some other talent. their new qb is chris musni a jr. he is a ok talent. and lenny is coming back for sure.
August 18th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
What does lol mean?
I do not coach at SLZ, just a fan too. But I dont like to see cowards posting on a blog about high school coaches who need/deserve more thank you’s than criticisms. Could care less if its Wright or Zo.
Why dont you coach, you do seem to know it all?
August 18th, 2009 at 8:20 pm
I’ll have to agree with you there….these coaches deserve our thanks, not pot-shots from a keyboard coward.
August 19th, 2009 at 12:02 am
What position does William Fukofuka play?
is he a DT or a DE?
August 19th, 2009 at 4:22 am
#8 what kind of a douche bag would have x & o’s as a name & back up losing coaches like Smith & Wright? You are not about X’s & O’s. Change your name to happy playing & losing as long as I play. This is America. WE want winners.
August 19th, 2009 at 6:35 am
The HAAL looks like this come the 2nd Saturday night in November, the day before NCS playoff teams picked:
Bishop O’Dowd
Hayward
San Leandro
Arroyo
Tennyson
Castro Valley
Mt. Eden
San Lorenzo
August 19th, 2009 at 11:37 am
I’ve seen almost every team this summer. Here’s my Preview & predictions on the H.A.A.L:
O’Dowd: Brown & that line will run over and around every team in the H.A.A.L. on their way to the title.
San Leandro: Looks down from the past few years. But still good enough to finish 2nd with Roberson. He’ll carry this team on his back & gain over 1,200 yards.
Castro Valley: They looked good during the summer. I believe this is the real sleeper. Skill players, speed, numbers. Reed might be the best player in the league.
Hayward: Alberty has talent around him but like San Leandro they look a little down. But in the H.A.A.L. they will win so 4th place finish is about right.
Arroyo: Buac is the most underrated RB in the league & they have a fullback that is a beast, if their line gets better this team could go 7-3.
Tennyson: This team has a good quarterback(kid w/dreds). They looked ok in 7-on-7. but not much else. They should finish somewhere in the middle.
San Lorenzo: The QB is back & they have athletes. They could go higher but I didn’t see their line play. So if their line is better than Tennyson’s & Arroyo’s they could move up to 5th.
Mt.Eden: Nothing special here. No stars on this team. this program has hit rock bottom.
My predictions for the H.A.A.L.:
Playoffs
———
Champs – Bishop O’Dowd 8-2
2nd – San Leandro 7-3
————————–
Bubble teams that won’t get in
3rd – Castro Valley 7-3
4th – Hayward 6-4
——————————
No playoffs
5th – Arroyo 5-5
6th – Tennyson 5-5
7th – San Lorenzo 4-6
8th – Mt.Eden 2-8
MVP Offense – Mario Brown (O’Dowd)
MVP Defense – William Fukafuko (SLZ)
Coach of the year will be Jacob Wright
August 19th, 2009 at 11:42 am
If San Lorenzo can beat Arroyo & Tennyson(which are toss-ups) & upset a Hayward or Castro Valley that would make them 7-3 and then they make the playoffs and Wright is coach of the year. If not then I would go with Perenon.
August 19th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
7-3 will not get SL into the play-offs
August 19th, 2009 at 9:05 pm
Jacob Wright is the coach of the year in the HAAL? Why is that? You have his team finishing 7th and he makes coach of the year? WOW! Thats a slap in the face to the other coaches that you have finishing in front of him. I don’t really agree with your list, think Hayward will be 3 and CV at 4. I don’t know about O’Dowd beating San Leandro this year. You need more than one stud to beat out that team. When was the last time they beat SL 04? If you ask me SL should be favorite until O’dowd shows they can get it done.
August 19th, 2009 at 9:54 pm
I messed up and said Wright would be coach of the year . ONLY if they could pull off 7-3 with Ws vs. Arroyo & Tennyson & an upset over cv or hay.
August 19th, 2009 at 10:24 pm
Deep6 is probably right about Wright. Unless, McMaster can get the ball rolling at CV or Perenon finally knocks off the Pirates on the way to being undefeated in league. Perkin, SLZ is not a Division 1 school. A 7-3 record at the lower divisions pretty much is a lock for a playoff seed. Especially, with the expanded brackets. I can also definitely agree with ManDown on his assessment of CV vs. Hayward. Hayward has the athletic capability, it’s just a matter of whether or not Coach Bishop can turn those possibilities into realities. But, don’t sleep on Coach McMaster and crew. The guy is knowledgeable and definitely has his kids’ respect when it comes to running a team. He played there back in the day, when CV was a top notch school and I hear he wants to eventually return to the Wing-T. Can anyone verify this? Don’t even know what they’re going to run this year now that Coach Seiden has moved on. Lastly, O’Dowd will never be ahead of San Leandro in any preseason rankings until they can show that they are willing to bring their “A” game to every contest. There are days where BOD looks poised to return to dance at the coliseum and then there are days where they barely squeak by a lower rung team. And why is it that they never show up to give San Leandro a battle? It may just be me, but it never looks like a 100% effort from the Dragons when they head into Burrell. Overall, it’s San Leandro’s league to lose, 3 other teams are fighting over who will be the maid of honor, and everyone else should be happy they’re even invited to the damn thing and try to score some cake on the way out the door.
August 19th, 2009 at 10:27 pm
What makes you think San Lorenzo will win their non league games?
They will lose to Mt. Diablo week 1
August 20th, 2009 at 12:09 am
4,500 students at CV? Haha not true. There are about 2,400 at the most.
August 20th, 2009 at 6:11 am
Deep6 with a very good breakdown of the HAAL.
Our predictions are similar but you seem to have the inside scoop.
Nice work.
Has anybody seen last year’s NCS champs Encinal this off season? Word is they have reloaded and are not rebuilding, is that true?
What about Campolindo and Las Lomas also?
August 20th, 2009 at 9:32 am
I have a cousin coaching & 2 nephews playin so I’ve seen & heard about teams in the OAL,MVAL,& HAAL.
August 20th, 2009 at 9:47 am
The 4,500 was kind of a joke … CV really has like 3,000 kids, though.
August 20th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
Encinal looks good this year. They are not last years team but they should contend this year in D3. Good team speed, I like there QB and RBs, and there defense was pretty solid against Oakland High at the camp. Encinal will struggle this year but they should win league. I respect them for trying to schedule a “BIG TIME” team in Serra but they wont get past them. I am hearing some good things from Hayward this year but I dont know if they will be able to get past SL or O’Dowd. They lost a heart breaker last year to O’Dowd and they should be looking for revenge this year. The farmers are a sleeper team this year and should put pressure on the HAAL.
August 21st, 2009 at 9:45 pm
dont sleep on Mt. Eden people.
they have hidden talent. New QB Joe Latu this kid has a cannon. WR’s Antoin Williams and Chris Salinad pure speed, agility and athleticism and are major targets.
August 22nd, 2009 at 2:52 pm
Look O’dowd to take the HAAL, they do however have to finally get by SL to take the crown…. I feel that everyone thinks too highly of CV, i believe they will be looking at another off year. i would take Hayward and Arroyo as the sleeper picks. Arroyo has gotten some very good players that havent played for the Dons the year before (Michael Young and Mica McMurray). i also agree that the Dons will need their line to step up with all the loses from the previous year, if the line can hold their own look for the Dons to go 7-3. lead by Buac, Judson, and McMurray.
my predictions
1. Bishop O’Dowd
2. San Leandro
3. Hayward- Arroyo
5. Castro Valley
6. Tennyson
7. San Lorenzo
8. Mt. Eden
August 22nd, 2009 at 3:33 pm
You guys are hilarious. Honestly you think Tennyson, Slz and CV can beat Mt. Eden.
Slz couldnt do it last year with mafi and definently cant this year without him, CV had a much better chance last year and Tennyson couldnt pull it with carmona and his passing game.
August 22nd, 2009 at 11:12 pm
#25, I agree with you there, which is why it’s a race of not finishing last after the top 4. Bishop O’Dowd will beat San Leandro this year. Arroyo and Hayward are in the best position to make strides towards the playoffs. however Tennyson, Castro Valley, San Lorenzo, and Mt. Eden will be doing musical chairs to avoid last place. No disrespect, they are not in any order. I’m not making any predictions, aside from the league champion, however I believe nobody’s going to go winless in the HAAL and there’s going to be a lot of splits among those last 4, for example, with the home team always being the favorite since there’s such a toss up for me. castro valley has to show me something, mt. eden, tennyson and san lorenzo do to, so maybe after non-league we can figure it out better.
August 23rd, 2009 at 12:59 am
Lenny Jones the returning TE/DE put up tremendous numbers last year what makes you think he wont do it again this year and roberson in his 3rd year as a starter will continue to lead the team O’down Sanleandro is always a rivalry but the pirates some how always come out on top the rest of the HAAL is a joke
August 23rd, 2009 at 9:54 am
Monarchman: As much of a Mt. Eden guy as I am, being alumni, even I have to agree with everybody’s assessment. It is not hilarious to think that SLZ, CV, and TEN would beat Mt. Eden when those were the only three teams they beat the whole season. It’s not a stretch. Secondly, they lost Offensive Player of the Year Josh Jackai, team leading rusher Josh Jackai, team leading scorer Josh Jackai, but most importantly, team LEADER Josh Jackai. I know the kid extremely well and a guy like that only comes around every couple of years. The reason I put so much emphasis on this man is because I believe the Monarchs only scored one or two touchdowns last year that weren’t his. THAT is ridiculous. They also graduated their best linemen, C Abraham Ledesma, and couple it with an inexperienced first year quarterback, albeit with a cannon of an arm, and you’re set for a disaster. Their linemen are slow on their feet and are expected to pass protect atleast ten to fifteen times a game? Maybe more, unless I’m reading too heavily into all the Quads, Trips, and Trips Open sets I’m seeing in their passing leagues or maybe they’re just trying to win their passing leagues, who knows anymore. There is talent at this school. It’s underachieved for far too long, this year is no exception in my eyes.
August 23rd, 2009 at 11:05 am
SL has tons of talent coming back this year with WR Alvictor bradford, TE Lenny Jones, WR Victor bannerman the runningback position is loaded with talents too starting with george roberson, brian morales, tristan caraan, and roderick mcdonald. A few new comers showed tremendous talent at the linebacker position starting with talce evans and eldren jones. The O-line will be led by two returning starters tackle sione maile and center edgar tolentino both also play on the D-line. Sl will rely on their speed this year to take over the league. They play very physical defense with returning linebacker adebanbo moronkola to help solidify the defense. I dont know how odowd can stop this young but talented sl squad i believe they will take the crown again this year.
August 23rd, 2009 at 11:41 am
#28 you are right but who knows, this is high school football anything is possible. But what is for sure is that San Leandro will dominate the league and with Lenny Jones Returning, talk about having the upper hand.
August 23rd, 2009 at 3:29 pm
Monarch man, I can understand you supporting your school but they will struggle. NO Jackai = Last place in the HAAL.
August 23rd, 2009 at 7:07 pm
LENNY JONES IIS JUS NOW TURNED 18 AND IIS NOT OLDER THAN EVERYBODY ACTUALLY HE IS NOT THE OLDEST ON HIS TEAM….
HIS SITUATION IS COMPL;ICATED BUT THE DISTRICT SCHOOL AND CIF GRANTED HIS RETURN SO REGARDLESS TO YOUR OPINION HE WILL SUIT UP WIT THE PIRATES ON SEPT.4th AGAINST BELLERMINE AND PLAY THE WHOLE SEASON…
HE PLANS TO LEAD HIS TEAM TO AN UNDEFEATED SEASON AND DESTROY O’DOWD
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:34 pm

August 24th, 2009 at 11:06 am
Who are o dowd’s first 3 games?
August 24th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
Alameda and St. Ignatius on the road then Skyline at home
August 24th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
if what they say about len jones situation is true, i think he should have a chance 2 play the yr he missed when he could have been playin. he could have took a bad situation & made it worse, but obviously he has passion for the sport and stayed outta trouble. i can only speak for myself, but I was under the impression that he wasn’t holding it down in the classroom & thats y he was playin another year. can’t wait to see the o’dowd vs. sl game
August 24th, 2009 at 10:03 pm
Bbfan2:: jones will stay the whole year at san leandro high and will be wearing number 19 for the pirates football team ii will be in attendance at all games hope u come and watch him to
support the kid he might suprise you and is looking to sign to a division-1 school in feb.
August 24th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
We all know BOD vs. SL is the game to watch but who has the inside scoop on some other good games? I know week 1 of league play Tennyson at BOD, not much of a game but first game under the lights at o’dowd should be a sight.
August 24th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
the season is here come friday so the talk means nothing i look forward to paying close attention to the 5th year player out of san leandro as well as standouts Mario Brown of O’dowd, and LB/WR Ashawndaus Woods of hayward the haal has been under estimated for the passed couple seasons but from what i see San Leandro has the chance to make a statement and put the HAAL back on the map sept. 4th Against CCS champs Belermain prep at the pirates home field. Don’t be surprised to see the pirates come out on top.
August 24th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
High School players should be suspended by their coaches if the speak on this website….Im tired of the Ashawdus Wood’s and Desmond Camper’s on here hyping they selfs up now we got a 5th Year High School Senior on here talkin bout he bouta go D-1 but I don’t see how whn he is a 5th year senior in High school…His offers will only b from Chabot Laney or City
August 24th, 2009 at 11:41 pm
Cash Flow: how positive is that what type of messege are you sending to our young athletes wishing the worse for them if their names are mentioned on this site it must mean they are more then deserving of the honor. Personally ive witnessed Brown,Woods, and 5TH YEAR SR. Jones and trust they will not dissapoint this season
as far as Jones is concerned it isn’t your place to talk on his 5th year unless you understand his reasoning for getting an extra year.
August 25th, 2009 at 6:59 am
i think that’s what teens do, they hype themselves up, it can be annoying, but it’s my understanding that he missed school for a situation beyond his control and instead of getting caught up or using it as an excuse to get into trouble, he returned to school, but obviously behind, hence the 5th year. Mr jones, hope I’m right or I gonna look pretty dumb, but like I said good luck to you.
August 25th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
ma friend has been getting on here defending me but now this is me
I had a very very difficult situation happen to me my sophmore year and i was sent to juvenile hall for a few months and also to cont. school and was later found a non-particapating party. and if you could take a look at my transcript it would show up to a college as if i didnt not attend school my whole 10th grade year becasue they dont except cont. credits neither juvile halls. So when my senior year was coming to an end ii felt this wasnt fair to me because i didnt get myself in this situation it was all a mistake so i filed to the (C.I.F) and they said i was eligible to file for another year and was granted another year..
Honestly ii just want to make up all classes i never got a chance to take and get into a good football program and school. and i dont know why this is making people mad at me when im the one who was put in this diffucult situation. so yeah i just hope the san leandro pirate fans come support and all the people who are mad about my friends blogs sorry. but i promise you cash flow i will have a great season and wont be at laney or chabot
GO PIRATES #19
August 25th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
Lenny,
Going to be good to watch you play again this year. Really looking forward to it. See ya out there soon.
August 25th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
thanx for the support
August 25th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
Show me don’t talk about it Lenny
August 26th, 2009 at 12:25 am
haha hype…i jus wanna give my quick definition on hype..hype is something thats not real or fake..and quite frankly im far from that im the real deal…if anyone hasnt noticed i havent posted anything on this website since hoop season so as far as me hyping myself up thats a lie…but i appreciate the love tho and im looking forward to playing mario and lenny one more time before i hang my cleats up at HHS
August 26th, 2009 at 7:41 am
Lenny, like I said, you coulda turned a bad situation worse, but you fought for what was right, and I am definitely gonna be at the SL/Odowd game. Some people probably would be happy to see you give up, so you make sure you prove them wrong. Good luck
August 26th, 2009 at 8:29 pm
Certain bloggers on here are on the outside and don’t really know all that is going on with these kids and schools. So I asked around to those who know and learned a lot.
Lenny Jones has the size and tools to make it to the next level, his academic progress this year will determine if he can make it. He will be an All-leaguer,1st teamer.
Woods is a talented player who needs to put on a little more weight to play DI. A few think he’s more of a D-IAA to D2 type.
As far as Tennyson & San Lorenzo having a lot of big & good players is a joke. They are usually the smallest teams in the league. The coaches I have spoken to say SLZ’s Wright & Tennyson’s Smith are good coaches & get the most of their teams. I would take their word over some bloggers since they coach against them.
Wright took over a team that lost every game before he got there. Smith has made Tennyson respectable. I believe in time one of these two programs will be a surprise team & finish a lot higher than everyon predicts.
August 27th, 2009 at 4:55 am
Wright took over a team in June his first year in 2005 & went 5-5. Then after a 3 full years as an on campus coach he’s been 3-7, 0-10, 3-7 with a few recruits one that I think went to Cal. He attends 2 contact camps a year & has his own Passing League. Everytime I’ve ever driven by his field there are 30 plus kids out there not August, June/July. He’s got better athletes then his record & his kids attentd his off-season so he can’t blame their work ethic. Ask any OAL coach their number one problem is geting kids to attend off-season practices. Well this guys has got it. How bout some results.
Tennyson Coach Smith goes to competitive Edge camp which is over $100 a kid & usually has 2 or 3 other contact camps. For gods sake look at his schedule. He schedules the worse of the worse.
Did you talk to Perenon & Bowers Deeps6? They both probably say how these guys are great coaches then put 50-60 points up on them. Thats called NO MERCY RULE!
August 27th, 2009 at 11:20 am
Still criticizing coaches, huh, Roeper?
August 27th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
Knights are you still crying?
August 27th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
ManDown…are you still cheerleading….
Are you being the critic? Or the man in the arena?
(Dont answer that, it was rhetorical)…we all know the answer.
August 27th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
Hahaha! Funny guy!
August 27th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
deep6 i appreciate the constructive criticizm…and i’ve heard from a lot of coaches that i need more weight and i’ve done so this off season..i went from being 187 last season to around 200 to 204 now so i think im in pretty good shape
August 27th, 2009 at 11:00 pm
San Lorenzo & Tennyson do not match-up with the athletes & linemen that San Leandro, Bishop O’Dowd, Hayward, Castro Valley,& Mt.Eden have in their program. All of those schools are bigger than SLZ & Tennyson. Wright & Smith play with less and get more out of their players & that’s coming from O’Dowd & SL coaches. Now I haven’t seen every game, but based on what I’ve seen & heard I respect both coaches. Their situations are tougher than most.
And to say OAL schools are not committed during the summer proves you are out of the loop. Oakland scrimmaged almost every week in pads. Fremont was at at least 3 contact camps. Skyline holds their own NFL funded camp. Castlemont always at Logan Camp puttin it down during the summer. My nephew was at practice every day during the summer.
Roeper your info is clouded by what you read off cal preps. Where else do you get your info?
Woods, keep on adding pounds. I am a firm believer in lifting weights & eating right. If I was running a program I would have all my players on some legal supplement, eating team meals & lifting 3-4 days a week for 1 hour in the morning. A protein shake every morning,& play smash mouth ball on offense & use the Tampa 2 defense. Of course, tutoring & grade checks = champions on and off the field.
D-I takes a chance on you
August 27th, 2009 at 11:04 pm
Woods, I hope you can have a season where a D-I takes a chance on you. Good luck this year.
August 28th, 2009 at 1:58 am
3 things to put out their,
NUMBER 1 is that who the hell are you mr woods?? No one cares if your the real ashwadous woods? Second, ur full of urs self? Every one wants ta talk about a nobody from hhs,? About how he is not in the weight rooom?? Ur a joke to me.. Get real lol I woulda killed u across the middle, your not no jahvid best or joey devine, jonathan brown, or kylan butler lol. 3, KNIGhts? I don’t like how your talking about the 2 smartest people on this blog roeper and mandown be real? Ur statements are jokes to me, and your just a lil kid on jv probally hella butt hurt that their talking about your coach like that LOL
August 28th, 2009 at 3:22 am
I can definitely agree with the sentiment that OAL schools go to a bunch of camps. We just played Fremont today out at Mt. Diablo and I hear they have a scrimmage tomorrow in Oakland. They are legit. Just need to work on their defensive and offensive discipline. Stupid penalties, improper alignment, and forgetting responsibilities in order to get to the ball were they’re only weaknesses. Kinda worried about them getting tired of football and being burned out though. It happens. However, attendance is down. It seems to be this way amongst all schools, not just OAL schools. Lastly, I hate to say it Deep6 but, ROEPER has a point. All the HAAL schools have the talent to be competitive. Now, that doesn’t mean make a run for a NCS title every year. But, they should atleast pose a threat to the opposing team. SLZ and Tennyson have the guys. SLZ has won a section title and their “Helmet Game” with Arroyo, especially during the Coach Roberts days, were chess matches with each opponent waiting for the other to err. Yet, they have failed to impact their own league for some time, even with Michael Calvin (starting receiver at Cal). Tennyson, with all its depth at the skills positions and linemen, has yet to show that they can beat teams when evenly matched. The one thing I can say for Tennyson, is they beat those they should beat soundly. But when it is not a clear cut decision from the get go, you never know when the turnover and penalty machine will start up. There are games where you can’t help but grimace for 24 minutes and thank the lord it’s half way through. Both teams have underachieved for far too long. Not a knock on the coaches, just stating observations. Read into it what you will.
August 28th, 2009 at 4:23 am
OAL does go to a lot of Camps with 15-16 guys. Mt. Eden just scrimmaged Fremont High and had 35 VAR guys with close to 40 JV guys. CAstlemont about the same 17-20 guys usually. WIthout a doubt these camps are what makes the OAL good JAnuary -MAy time is the off-season is what I’m talking about & everyday practice June/July.
The point is this about Wright in May he said that everyone who attended the NFL sponsored camp at Sklyline had to make it to 80% of their off-season days January-May. I was at that camp they had the 3rd best looking athletes there behind Fremont High & Encinal. Better then Logan & Skyline.
August 28th, 2009 at 4:29 am
I agree about the OAL schools doing a little too much in the off-season. BUt I thought the same about Castlemont last year they were at every camp & they won their league championship game.
August 28th, 2009 at 10:55 am
The Truth…
If you think Roeper and Mandown are the two smartest people on this blog, I am LOL-ing at you….and your poor grammar, and your poor use of the English language.
Why dont the three of you coach a team somewhere and see how you like being judged by nameless, faceless, and GUTLESS cowards, like you three.
It is not the critic who counts, its the man in the arena.
August 28th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
Knights you still talking with all that sh*t in you mouth?
August 28th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
Another example of intelligence for Roeper….this is who you call smart, Mandown?
August 28th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
my grammer? you old shit hwta the hell is lol-ing at you mean, you loser, what dont you tell me what school you coach at? and do ?? tell us, dont be fake now
August 28th, 2009 at 7:21 pm
I speak for myself “knights”. I do my own grown man thing and I never took anyones side. Maybe you need to throw your glasses on and read a little closer to the fine print buddy. You are obviously on my jock because you keep putting my name in your mouth saying all types of things. Haha. I must be saying some things that are true because you are trippin a little too hard. Get it together pervert!
August 28th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
The Truth…where do I coach, hmmmm, use your OAL education..with a name like Knights? Again, your grammar has me laughing, and feeling sorry for you.
ManDown….pervert? Where did that come from?
“Putting your name in my mouth?” What are you 16, do we have to “scrap” now? Too funny. I think you are trippinG!
August 29th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
watched the scrimmage of san leandro
they are going to take league for sure alot of weapons ono offense
August 29th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
i was there for a bit aswell
Saw San Leandro vs Las Lomas
the SL defense seemed a little weak, LL moved the ball, but they always toughened up near the goal line and kept them from scoring. Bend but dont break type of D
the O looked very good. There was some big holes for the backs and the Qb and WRs looked good connecting on some medium and deep passes.
Also on the first play a very speedy SL WR took a short screen pass 40 yards for a TD. He shook 2 defenders in the flat then FLEW down the sideline for the TD
August 29th, 2009 at 7:02 pm
ROEPER, why exactly is Tennyson’s new QB not a Shotgun QB? And which QB are you talking about exactly?
August 30th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
Roeper don’t know s@$t. The Tennyson QB(with dreds) was completing a lot of passes at the passing league in Dublin. He was accurate & Tennyson was moving the ball. What’s their QB’s name?
August 30th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
Roeper, What is your issue with Wright? He’s got those kids out there working towards being a winner. What did you do today to help anyone?
August 30th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
Deep6, the QBs name is Kyle Johnson.
I can tell you this though, if ROEPER said this 5 months ago, he’d probably be right. Kyle has worked pretty hard over at Tennyson to improve, and has done so 10-fold. Now he’s just got to do all the things he’s suppose to do on the field and he should have a good year.

to HAAL: YOU’RE TOO FUNNY! HOW ARE YOU GOING TO BE A MONARCH ALUMNI AND TALK SMACK LIKE THAT. LET ME GUESS, YOU MUST BE ONE OF THE COACHES THAT GOT FIRED FROM MT. EDEN’S COACHING STAFF FROM LAST YEAR? AND NOW YOU’RE PROBABLY A SPECIAL TEAMS COACH ON A JV LEVEL NOW. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT GETTING FIRED FROM A LAST PLACE TEAM? THAT SAYS A LOT ABOUT YOU!
September 1st, 2009 at 10:23 pm
that was to HAAL FAN
September 2nd, 2009 at 12:19 am
YO DADDY: I don’t know what your affiliation with the school is. So, I will put this in as few words as possible:
Illusions of grandeur help NO ONE.
Now, for the rest of the post: I too find myself funny, it’s nice to know that somebody else appreciates my presence on the board. Firstly, I’m afraid that you have just been lumped in with every other person who comes on this board and throws down information that is unverified and, 99% of the time, just flat out untrue. You take these little tidbits of “Oh, I heard from a guy who gets his hair cut by a guy, who eats lunch with a guy, who washes the dog of so and so coach that blah blah blah …” then you hold them up as facts. Not one coach on Mt. Eden’s Varsity staff of last year was fired. “OH NO! But the guy with dog and the hair said …” Every coach who is no longer with the program walked away on his own without any kind of pressure from administration or staff, all 3 of them. THAT is the truth. So how do I feel about that? Pretty damn good knowing that none of what you said actually happened. Secondly, when the only reason you come on to a board like this, where people like to use FACTS, and throw down your opinion, it is perfectly welcome as long as it pertains to football. Otherwise, WE DON’T CARE ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY. You took attention away from the game and cast it onto yourself. Well, now that we are all giving you the attention you want, here is my final point. It is that exact concept, of “expecting to exceptionally perform at what you do best, but addressing those things you do worst” THAT GOT THIS TEAM TO A 8-2 RECORD AT ONE POINT AFTER AN UNGODLY NUMBER OF CONSECUTIVE LOSING SEASONS. When I PLAYED on that team, we saw what we did well but focused on what we felt were vulnerabilities. That’s how champions do things. I am doing these kids no favors by coming on here and saying “Mt. Eden for life! Blue and gold, up and down that field all day!” But, they may benefit from somebody pointing out their weaknesses or, at the very least, giving them bulletin board material. All FACTS aside, I gave insight into the current condition of my former team, of which I will always be proud. You, YO DADDY, came on here with the sole intention of prodding me into a response and congratulations little boy, you got it. Now my question to you is: What does that say about you? Oh yeah, that was to YO DADDY.
September 2nd, 2009 at 12:20 am
Sorry about the length up there guys. Just tired of ignorance being left unenlightened.
September 2nd, 2009 at 8:09 am
#70G we’ll see where that QB gets them he will be a huge drop from last year when they when they had an All-start QB if I’m not mistaken & still were just 4-6 with wins over teams like Mission San Jose.
#72 Kids are out there wanting to win & their being led by a clown. The guy is hella cocky I’ve seen him coach he baits other team(atleast at camps) runs down the field & acts like a fool. He complained 3 years ago that he had no assistant coaches & that part of his problem is that he had to call the offense, defense & special teams. Yet 3 years later he still calls everything?? When is he gonnna be considered a bad coach? 8 years in? You get your Frosh class when you got hired to prove yourself 4 years then it is what it is they are what they are.
My problem is kids out there attend his practices. Doesn’t happen at many losing schools. That community deserves better.
September 2nd, 2009 at 11:25 am
all talk comes to an end this friday im looking forward to watching senior standouts George Roberson and Lenny Jones of San Leandro lead the pirates to upsetting Bellermain prep.
September 2nd, 2009 at 3:35 pm
Deep6,
Its obvious Roeper does nothing for young people but critique the people who are leading them.
Dont waste your time on him. He is not in the arena.
September 2nd, 2009 at 11:15 pm
its funny we all noe who HAAL Fann is becuase he the only loser we see seatin in the stands while us players on the feild workin with our new coaching staff. You to scared to come on the feild because you know we got a better coaching staff. And trust me as a player i see the improvement on the team. Joe Latu is the new QB and he will lead us to a great season. Defensive Wise we stepped up we will shut things down. D-line will get through we have faith. offensivly we will survive and score. WE WILL PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!!!!
I THOUGHT ONCE YOU WERE A MONARCH YOU WOULD ALWAYS BLEED BLUE AND GOLD NO MATTER WHAT BUT HAAL FAN IS A FAKE COME TO YOUR OLD SCHOOL AND SEE HOW MUCHED WE IMPROVED SO YOU CAN SHUT UP.

A real monarch: show it on the field, talk with your pad’s. Don’t listen to what anyone else says. You and your team just go out there and handle business.

HAAL FAN who is DAVID PHILLIP. i don’t know why you come on here and talk smack for. now read my display name and you’ll know my affiliation with the team. I don’t mean to disrespect, but if you’re gonna come on here and dawg mah boys, of course i’m gonna defend them all da way. You don’t know half da deal with the team this year, so don’t come on here sayin that “MT. EDEN HAS NO TALENT” and that “JOSH JACKAI WAS THIS AND THAT…” and there’s no doubt about that. Josh Jackai was an outstanding football player, but he couldn’t have done it on his own. You know this as much as I do that football is a “TEAM” sport and there’s no room for individuals. & nobody is tellin you to come on here and rep mt. eden and say “I BLEED BLUE & GOLD” or “MONARCHS FOR LIFE” just don’t come on here blindly talkin smack like you kno the deal with the team. & last from what I was told yall bounced on the team before yall was fired, so there if that’s what you wanted to hear then there it goes. You were gonna be fired as a coach, you jsut found out ahead of time and took the initiative to leave before it happened. So i’m gonna leave it at this. If you have further comments you would like to share, you kno where ill be at monday-friday from 330-630pm. come holla at cho boyee!!

September 5th, 2009 at 7:11 pm
Hey, your comment knocked me off the blog highlites. What’s goin’ on with the Mt. Eden stuff?
I know 4 outstanding ex-atheletes from Mt. Eden.
Ernie Lindsey, 9:05 2 mile, 3rd at state in 1966, Ralph Gamez 1st at state in 1966 BHS(ex- Mt. Eden runner), Derek Ligons NCS hurdler champ in 1972( 14.0) and Paul Cruz, baseball /football, ex USC and Phillies Farm System player.
September 5th, 2009 at 8:35 pm
Don’t get defensive Manoa, I have nothing bad to say about Mt. Eden, Nor have I said anything bad about Mt. Eden
September 5th, 2009 at 8:55 pm
Who cares about mount eden they suck they lost to tennyson at Logan Camp and will likely lose to all the haal teams this season…may go to the wire with SLZ
September 5th, 2009 at 9:10 pm
how do you lose to a team at a contact camp?
I didnt even know Logan had a camp, what type of format was it?
September 5th, 2009 at 9:12 pm
…do they do it like comp. edge? Or is it actually a non-contact 7on7 type deal?
September 5th, 2009 at 9:28 pm
Full contact camp. Typically a four team jamboree format. Teams have individual sessions, then break up for 7 on 7 with line working drills at the coaches’ preference. Day concludes with full team scrimmage and a king of the hill goal line challenge to conclude camp. As to the first question, I’ll have to look into how that works as well.

ODowd and coach Paul Perenon will win the HAAL. He has 29 yrs under his belt and has his teams prepared. That Catholic discinpline and speed will smoke San Leandro and Mt. Eden like a jay.
September 9th, 2009 at 11:33 am
After seeing San Leandro’s last performence. O’Dowd nd San Leandro may be a lilttle bit more interesting when hey play. What weapons does O’Dowd have besides Mario Brown
September 9th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
Good God. I didn’t even post that. Must be something in the water.
September 9th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
BOD is definitely poised to take out San Leandro, perennial king of the hill in the HAAL. But, just because they’re positioned to do so, doesn’t mean they will. They return their starting QB, Mario Brown, several offensive linemen, and their WR’s (I believe one of them was a Junior Olympian in track and field). But, like I stated before, when O’Dowd plays San Leandro they don’t play the way O’Dowd plays. This takes nothing away from Coach Perenon, who I think has done an amazing job, even when he does schedule occasional creampuffs. I just need to see BOD show up ready to lay some hat rather than wait for the inevitable. After all, they should’ve beat San Leandro atleast 3 times out of the last 5 years.
September 9th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
HAAL Fan,
I don’t know what SL/BOD games you were watching but the only game the last 5 years that BOD had a chance in was the 2006. 2005 SL was up by at least 14 most of the game. 2007 SL again was up by at least 14 most of the 2nd half and up by 20 with 5 mins left in the game. Last year the game was “over” by the half.
September 9th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
I expect much of the same this year….BOD is live or die by the run
September 11th, 2009 at 12:36 am
I’m not talking about the result, I’m talking about the personnel match ups. They’ve always matched up toe to toe on paper. Not trying to diss San Leandro. I have nothing but love for the smash mouth passion they bring to the game.
September 11th, 2009 at 8:41 pm
BOD lost their top 3 wrs from last year but have a jr who came up from jv in week 10 last year and is a playmaker. 2 starting O linemen returning from last year and BOD SL game last year was 12-7 at half.
September 11th, 2009 at 9:28 pm
Thats right the SL/BOD game was close at half, but was over within the first 5 min of the 3rd qtr. 30-7 SL and BOD had given up.
September 11th, 2009 at 9:38 pm
who is winning the sl game now vs valley christian
September 11th, 2009 at 9:49 pm
SL lost 24-7. Looks like SL is running out of steam in the second half of their games. Maybe too many players playing both ways. VC looks good for their first game.
September 11th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
did sl quarterback have another bad game, what about roberson?
September 11th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
SL quarterback looked good until he got hurt in the second half and Roberson looked good until late in the second half. The defense gave up 21 pts in the 4th.
September 11th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
oops, 14 pts not 21
September 11th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
oh was it a serious injury??? did he throw any picks?
September 11th, 2009 at 10:07 pm
Wow, either Alameda really improved this year or BOD is not that good. Last year San Lorenzo beat Alameda and now they tie BOD at 28…
September 11th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
It didn’t look serious he continued to play later and yes I think he threw at least 2 picks. SL was winning the first half 7-3 and just ran out of steam in the second half.
September 11th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
oh i see. thats 0-2 now for us.. not looking up. we have to put up some points next game.
September 11th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
and how did we get 7 on the board? and did byron marshall from valley christian burn us?
September 11th, 2009 at 10:21 pm
Marshall is a stud on offense and defense. Got the 7 by a sweet deep pass and catch over the middle early in the first half.
September 11th, 2009 at 10:22 pm
thanks for the updates
September 11th, 2009 at 10:53 pm
That’s 02 vs. the WCAL, combined score of 61-13 in 2 games. San Leandro mis a good program, don’t want any part of that private/Catholic school football-nice effort in scheduling top teams outside the area.

Coach Wright is a good coach….The record may not show it…But trust he is…It kills me how people who don’t really know a coach can run him in the mud…Its not always about the X and the O’s some times its the Jimmy’s and the Joe’s ….Sorry had to put my two cents in.

Coach Wright is a very good guy but as a coach he is not so good. SLZ has talent on that roster but can only put up a few wins a year and your telling me he is a good coach? You must mean good guy because I don’t ever remember Jacob Wright ever having a winning team. Sorry I don’t want to knock SLZ but you guys barley got past Moreau and beat bad teams in Tennyson and Castro Valley.

SL and Hayward we’re comin for u!!!!!!! But I know a win over O’Dowd says we’re here to play…. and for all those haters hating on our coach. Jacob Wright has more talent and class in his little pinky, then u could ever dream of!!!!!!!!!! Coach Wright is a great role model & father figure for our kids. My son has been blessed with the opportunity to play for such a class act!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

October 28th, 2009 at 8:15 am
Arroyo will go 5-5 this season.
Arroyo will beat Tennyson, and ofcourse beat SLZ for the helmet game. And will pull the upset over BOD who has been a disapointment this year in the HAAL.
November 8th, 2009 at 12:10 am
WOW ARROYO #58 I GUESS THAT LITTLE HELMET GAME PREDICTION WAS WRONG…..NOW THAT WE HAVE THE HELMET!!!
November 8th, 2009 at 12:41 am

November 16th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
Wow fukas mom. I like how u talk for your son on this site. I hate how people hype themselves up on this site, well in this case ur son. In arroyo58s defense, your son did nothing to help slz beat arroyo. He got injured in the second quarter. Maybe next time you can strap on pads and play for him 2.
November 16th, 2009 at 11:43 pm
Yeah…. my son hyped himself up on this site….Wow and yeah I’d take you with my eyes closed if I strapped on some pads…Ha Ha… My son snapped his ankle in the first few minutes of the first quarter against Arroyo and already had a field goal block and 3 tackles…as for you…. all I have to say is you’re not about to see him on the field so it’s all good!!!!!!! What your mouth says!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
November 17th, 2009 at 7:47 pm
Actually did go against him. Didnt impress. And i was talking bout how u r hyping him up. I never said he was. But maybe u shoulda strapped on pads, u coulda done better than ur son
November 17th, 2009 at 10:08 pm
Actually I was talkin bout u goin one on one…You ain’t about to and you said my son hyped himself up…..He don’t have to.. he don’t have time to get on this site and talk when he has much better things to do like beat your A….s….. It’s just people like you and me who don’t have anything better to do….. but I’ll let his honors speak for themself….two time first team all league in basketball and 2nd team all league in football… along with all the pac 10′s among others such as 6 of the 8 ivy leagues tryin to recruit him….you go ahead with your bad self!!!!!!!!! Who’s tryin to recruit you…. ha ha
