well you never know but I’m for one surprised SRV is still ranked, just fell 2 spots after getting whooped by Cal High. How long do the Wolves get to stay ranked? Just wondering if there are any other deserving teams out there, because I know not every single voter would agree SRV belongs in the top 10 but the top 15?
Nice to see Ygnacio and Logan ranked again. Although maybe its too soon to rank Granada above the Pleasnaton schools. GHS/AVHS big game
October 5th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
I think Clayton Valley has played one of the toughest non league schedules, and their league is also still pretty tough. I think they may go undefeated again
October 5th, 2009 at 7:32 pm
How can you put Foothill and Amador ahead of Granada? They won that game didn’t they? if anything I think they should at least be ahead of Amador just by strentgh of schedule and the big win against last weeks #3 team…Just an opinion
October 5th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
I pretty much agree with this weeks poll rankings. Except that Granada should be ranked ahead of AV.
But I know that the Dons’ scare of DLS is carrying alot of “weight”. Which does make some sense. Though down the road. I only see AV achieving a 4-3 league slate. After DLS and MV…Granada is the next best team. George Atkinson III will be the reason why.
October 5th, 2009 at 8:13 pm
AV has their chance to seperate from Granada this week and I believe they will. AV has many playmakers and Stancil is a clutch QB-those dual threat QB’s are tough to beat. I can see AV upsetting MV this year. Cal also has a good chance of beating MV as Cal has a physical running game. Those MV DT’s are going to get exposed in the next 2 weeks.
October 5th, 2009 at 8:31 pm
It appears the rich get richer, as the EBAL has 7 teams in the top 12. Its got to be the strongest league in the Bay Area and all of Northern California, even with Livermore dragging it down a bit. I would have dropped Foothill below AV and Granada, out of respect for the Mats win. What’s scary is that Atkinson is a junior.
October 5th, 2009 at 9:13 pm
this poll is officially a joke…you excuse SRV getting dominated by cal 31-7…washington beat cal…say what you want about davis not playing much offense in the game…they still scored 30 pts on cal highs defense…SRV got a hand me TD only.
so maybe you could argue cal has played better football than washington and rank them higher…i would buy that…but the fact SRV is ranked above washington. SRV has no quality d1 wins and got dominated in only common opponent with washington. washington has 2 losses to two 4-0 teams.
and if concord lost to SRV who got whooped by cal…who got beat by washington…wow that is just crazy…
i agree logan should be ranked…top 10 looks fairly good except clayton valley…i just dont think they could even play with any of those top ebal schools and no they haven’t played that tough of scheduel…maybe for a d2 team, but if you are going to rank with d1 opponents they haven’t played anybody worth a darn.
i would slide clayton valley below pitt. move everyone else up one…remove srv and concord…slide logan to 12, washington to 13, yv to 14 and move heritage to 15…
wow you can tell where writers live AND WORK…this is comical, i would like to know if some of these writers even watch or pay attention to life outside their league. NEWS ALERT!!! JOE SOUTHWICK ISN’T AT SRV ANYMORE, THEY AREN’T THE SAME TEAM.
October 5th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
#6 The EBAL is pretty strong but I thnk I’d give the nod to the West Catholic League as the strongest in Northern California. Not just top teams. 1-8 West Catholic has better teams then the EBAL who looks down this year. 6 teams ranked in the SF Chronicle top 13 to EBAL just 3 & I don’t think that Foothill should be in the top 13 after laying an egg to Granada.
October 5th, 2009 at 9:27 pm
That is Foothill SHOULDN’T BE in the top 13.
October 5th, 2009 at 11:15 pm
This poll has always been a joke…no sense in even making a case….This poll needs to made a fan-vote poll or sumthin
October 6th, 2009 at 12:16 am
Everyone knows SRV has nobody left from their NCS runs in 06 07 and 08. The Wolves probably won’t even make NCS this year, but I guess there’s the argument that if Concord’s ranked(and Concord will probably be a NCS playoff team, even tho its Div 2) SRV should be ranked because they beat them. However its totally a mess with Washington beating Cal in week zero I agree with everyone above me.
The thing about Clayton Valley is, they graduated some great players too, but still have talent leftover from 08 and a solid program i.e. training the younger guys for DVAL. But North Salinas is a good team, and Clayton managed to beat them, kinda like how SRV beat Concord. Clayton’s definitely biggest win over a possible playoff team from the CCS, but due to some other out of section teams being down, no fault to the Eagles. Clayton will prove itself in league, taking care of Mt. Diablo, Northgate, Concord, and College Park with their defense. The biggest threat to them I believe is Ygnacio with tons of confidence and a great run game to match with the Eagles’.
The reason I don’t think Concord will upset CV is because SRV showed what mediocre defense can do to high powered offenses. And I believe CV has a much better defense than SRV. It’s true they probably wouldn’t compete in the EBAL against DLS, MV, AV, but I think they’re just as good as a Cal High or even Foothill now after being exposed as a team with defensive lapses. And the thing is their a lower division, but powerhouse lower teams can play with the big boys.. the strongest matches this year between teams in different divisions starting with Encinal(DIII)/Serra(DI).. El Cerrito(DIII)/Berkeley(DI)
O’dowd(DIII)/San Leandro(DI).. Kennedy(DIII)/Logan or Washington (both DI)..
those matchups get weaker at the bottom, but in Leagues with mixed divisions sometimes the best competition is from a very strong team w/ lower enrollment than your own. I mean Clayton was in the BVAL not a few years ago, held their own alright and did tie DLS back in 04..
one last thing is that that tie never gets brought up often when talking about the NCS winning streak. It should actually be called an UNBEATEN streak because some little DII team got it done with about two thirds the roster The Mighty Spartans had…
October 6th, 2009 at 12:18 am
I know that Berkeley High is a good football team but are they really the 4th best team in the bay? No doubt that there is talent and speed on that team but all they can do is run the ball. Take away Galvin then what do you have to counter with? If they want to beat teams in the Div. 1 playoffs they have to ba able to do more than rely on Galvin. Trust me that the teams they may face in the playoffs are not going let one player beat them.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:23 am
I would love to see Encinal,Berkeley, and Deer Valley High School all play eachother. Who would win? I think it would be a close call. All three teams are tough fast teams.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:26 am
I have a feeling that the mighty Spartins may go down this week vs Monte Vista! I don’t know but I think that the mustangs have a very good chance on winning. If De La Salle goes down this year to a Bay Area team it will be against Monte Vista.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:31 am
925 Says:
October 5th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
“I think Clayton Valley has played one of the toughest non league schedules”
You have got to be kidding. Clayton Valley has played one of the weakest presason schedules I have ever seen for an NCS power. The combined record of the teams they have played is just 6-19. Dublin? Liberty? Irvington? Vintage? N. Salinas?
The only team they have played with a record of at least .500 is Liberty, and the Lions might not win a league game this season. I have a lot of respect for Coach Pardi, but even he must have been laughing when he put together this non league schedule. Again, I hope you were kidding saying this was “one of the toughest non league schedules”. Compared to what?
October 6th, 2009 at 12:40 am
The rankings are a joke. I honestly think that most of the writers do not know anything about football. Washington below the team (CAL) and below a SRV who CAL just smashed. Seriously writers (not all) pull your head out of your #@$%#.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:15 am
Yeah 925 that was pretty stupid. Its weak scehdule just off last year. Pardi knew they were going to be down & scheduled accordingly.
October 6th, 2009 at 7:39 am
Yeah, I had to laugh when I saw the comment about Clayton Valley playing one of the toughest schedules. NO WAY!
October 6th, 2009 at 8:30 am
MV will beat DLS if DLS looks like they did against Amador, MV made Livermore look like a pop warner team!
Atkinson’s twin is probably the second fastest in EBAL any reason he doesnt see the ball on offense?
October 6th, 2009 at 8:36 am
Clayton Valley and a tough schedule? Give me a break. Concord, YV, and at least one other team in the league will spank em.
October 6th, 2009 at 8:50 am
Here are my Rankings heading into this weekend:
1. Berkeley: Galvin is a force and tough D with speed
2. Deer Valley: 2nd fastest team in bay area
3. Monte Vista: Air Raid QB will terrorize DLS Friday
4. De La Salle: After losing to MV, will drop to 5 or 6
5. Encinal: Size, speed and talent abound
6. Granada: About to take off vs. AV
7. Clayton Valley: Eagles are soaring
8. Ygnacio Valley: Balanced O leads to wins

12. Cal High: Good win vs. SR .500 record no sure thing
13. San Ramon: .500 record no sure thing either

October 6th, 2009 at 9:50 am
Here’s the problem, You cannot rank div I teams against Div II teams. The teams like Concord who chose to play teams like SRV, that is Div I, are doing so to help improve their play for the league games. The poll is not rocket science, and we should all be pleased that the Times has interest in our local football teams, unlike the Chronicle. My suggestions is to seperate the leagues and create your own poll, and put yourself out there for all of us to thrash!
October 6th, 2009 at 10:07 am
Please do not jump all over 925. I am sure he wishes he could recant his “I think Clayton Valley has played one of the toughest non league schedules” quote as everyone can look up CV’s schedule on Calpreps and see this is an ‘overstatement’ to put it politely.
What I think 925 meant to focus on is Clayton had a soft schedule last year as well and silenced all the critics by going all the way to the Div II championship game.
October 6th, 2009 at 10:12 am
Honestly guys?? Granada and Foothill, same overall record and Granada beats them at Foothill and is not ranked above them…I can already see this week being set up — MV beats DLS, but the Spartans are still No. 1. WE NEED ACCOUNTABILITY!!! LIST HOW EVERYONE VOTES SO THE WORLD CAN SEE THE TRUTH!!!
October 6th, 2009 at 10:18 am
Oh snap, didn’t even notice that. How the hell is Granada below Foothill when Granada JUST beat them at their place? LOL!
October 6th, 2009 at 10:56 am
Killer D
YV at 8 and no Concord at all…..what happened?
October 6th, 2009 at 11:07 am
Killer D.
Liberty wins.
YV wins.
DLS wins.
Amador wins.
October 6th, 2009 at 11:08 am
I agree with the rest.
October 6th, 2009 at 11:17 am
I wonder if Pinole Valley is on the rise again? I don’t know how good they really are but they’re 4-0. How will that contest between B-High and Pinole go?
October 6th, 2009 at 11:18 am
I would love to see Encinal,Berkeley, and Deer Valley High School all play eachother. Who would win? I think it would be a close call. All three teams are tough fast teams. Those would be exciting games to see.
October 6th, 2009 at 11:55 am
yeah whistle i dont think these writers even pay attention..there is no bigger barometer than head to head to distinguish teams…cal high and wash same record wash beat…end of story…granada foothill same record granada beat..end of story…
just as CV beat no quality d1 opponent you can’t rank them among the d1 teams…now they may or may not be able to compete, but if you don’t play the teams up top you can’t be ranked in a poll that includes d1 teams…encinal has played a few teams at least, although still to be ranked with the big boys you have to beat one of them. close losses don’t mean all that much, bottom line is you have to win games against quality teams…anyone can schedule cupcakes and never lose a game, just as anyone can schedule a ridiculously hard schedule and never win a game getting beat bad and then claim strength of schedule.
whistle this is getting funny i would love to see how these writers are voting…and how they can even justify them. whistle how would you rank your top 15?
October 6th, 2009 at 12:07 pm
im going…
#1 DLS – does their reign end this week…we will see
#2 MV – could we see a new #1 for first time in 20 years!
#3 deer valley – more quality wins than b-high so gets the nod…if dv loses to pitt only way b-high jumps them.
#4 b-high- pinole looms after that cupcake city!!!
#5 granada – got to give them the nod since they have a quality win something AV doesn’t. but close call.
#6 AV – a great loss…no good wins…
#7 foothill – played up and down this year, not sure what to make of them yet.
#8 encinal – played serra tough, but until matchup against top d1 schools from ncs can’t rank any higher. no doubt top school in their section though.
#9 washington – beat cal high…two losses against 4-0 teams.
#10 cal – has played better than washington since loss, but still lost..gonna take more convincing to move them above washington which they are certainly capable of.
#11 logan – doesn’t have a good win yet, but has played a brutal schedule. other than poor performance against foothill they have looked good.
#12 pitt – tough call between them and logan, could be a team that gets much much better toward end of year. way too much talent to sit this low. but logan played mv tougher so gave them the nod.
#13 clayton valley – 5-0 but agian not a d1 team, no shame in this ranking though.
#14 YV – has looked tough so far, but some ways to go.
#15 heritage – need more info on this team..very unimpressive vs kennedy of fremont…but has DV and pitt upcoming…they could be much better than this or much worse.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
I have no problem putting my ballot out there…
1. DLS – Obvious.
2. MV – Pretty clear No. 2 in my eyes.
3. Deer Valley – Have heard nothing but good things.
4. Amador – I’d argue having a 4th quarter lead against De La Salle is more impressive than any win any other team has. Big game vs Granada this week.
5. Berkeley – Galvin has been one of NorCal’s best this year. Could easily flip/flop with Amador, but the Pitt win isn’t looking as impressive after Monte Vista hammered the Pirates. Will probably go 10-0. Would like to see them play an EBAL team next year.
6. Granada – After watching Granada and Foothill on the same field, I can say with a lot of confidence Granada is better than Foothill. Mats led 35-14 in the third and this game was never in doubt.
7. Foothill – Had a much easier time with Logan than both MV and Deer Valley, snapped Novato’s 4 year home winning streak and dominated Miramonte.
8. Encinal – Could make a case to be as high as No. 4. After the Serra/DLS and Amador/DLS games I’d say Amador is on par with Serra, which beat Encinal by 15.
9. Clayton – Heard good things, but the wins don’t really impress me too much. I struggle to believe a team that struggled with Dublin for a half is better than any of the next 4 ranked teams, but CV is 17-1 over the past two years.
10. Cal – Would be seeded behind Washington because of the head to head loss. However, unlike Granada over Foothill where Granada was clearly the better team, the Cal-Washington game came right down to wire. They play 10 times it’s probably 5-5 or 6-4 in either direction. In the past couple weeks, Cal has been playing better, so Cal is ahead in this week’s ballot. Could easily change week to week.
11. Washington – None of the other teams have a win over a team I would rank. Washington does. San Ramon Valley got blasted by Cal, Washington beat Cal. SRV beat Concord. Washington lost to #3 Deer Valley and 4-0 Tracy. If the Huskies hadn’t lost by 21 in both those games, I’d have them ahead of Cal.
12. Logan – No key wins, but you can gain credibility in losses (AV vs DLS, Encinal hanging with Serra to a lesser extent). The fact they were a dropped pass away from beating Monte Vista whereas Pitt got blown out by Monte Vista is why I have Logan ahead of Pitt. A 3-point loss to Deer Valley makes it tough to have Logan behind Washington, but … the Cal win makes up for it.
13. Pitt – Talent wise, this is probably a top-3 team… and they were my No. 3 to start the year. It also wouldn’t surprise me if Pitt put it together, ran the table including Deer Valley and made a playoff run. Losses to MV, Granite Bay and Berkeley are like Logans to MV, DV and Foothill … all acceptable losses. However, I slotted Pitt behind Logan because Logan played better against MV.
14. Ygnacio Valley – Over the next 5 weeks YV plays team that are a combined 19-4. We’ll find out a lot more about this team over that time.
15. San Ramon Valley – Oakland are Concord are supposed to be among the best in their respective leagues. SRV beat both before a bad showing against Cal.
So there ya go … obviously not everyone will agree, but it’s fun to discuss regardless.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
Surprise you don’t have Livermore on the list Kyle. =p
October 6th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
haha… Seriously though, which of the 7 ranked EBAL teams shouldn’t be ranked?
October 6th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
Kyle,
Your list seems fair. But I feel like Serra would beat Granada and Foothill by 21 – 28 pts. As I remember the Jets were only a dropped pass away from winning that game. El Cerrito would run right past SRV (this year) and Logan High. I also think that Kennedy Fremont will beat Logan High (again). I dont think a pass happy Monte Vista can hang with the speed and tenacity of Bizzerkley High.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
Kyle,
Foothill shouldn’t be ranked in the 5th week of football this season. They traditionally are very good but right now they are still learning and it shows. However, I still feel your list is creditable and your probably on point here. I want to see Jimmy’s list.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
I forgot that they dominated Miramonte high. Novato is weak. How the hell did they get to state. I take that back, Foothill should be ranked but no higher than 10.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
um 28 to 13 isn’t a drop pass away buddy and Kennedy has no chance of beating Logan this year. plz stop posting. =(
October 6th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
Serra would probably beat Foothill/Granada, but I doubt by 3-4 scores. I think Encinal/Foothill/Granada/Amador/Berkeley are all about the same.
Kennedy won’t beat Logan this year and didn’t beat Logan last year. (Logan squeaked by, Kennedy beat Newark last year).
Monte Vista can hang with anyone, it blew out Pittsburg, which played a 2-point game with Berkeley.
Foothill has SRV and Livermore in its next two games, so I’ll pencil in Foothill for a 5-1 start. Then they have the national TV game with Monte Vista, which could be where Foothill falls off a little bit, but they are still a good team. Granada is just better at this point.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
If Foothill loses to Monte Vista they shouldn’t get tagged probably at all at this point. Your right it was Newark. However, Pitt and B – High was only close because they are a similar team (offensivley). B – High will continue to impress as they will beat an undefeated Pinole Valley team that is undefeated.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:32 pm
Think Washington should be ranked higher. The two losses they have accrued so far. Will look even more impressive 6-weeks from now. Because Deer Valley is going to be an NCS playoff team. While Tracy will be an SJS playoff team. Both schools could be high seeds too.
October 6th, 2009 at 6:08 pm
Here’s my poll. Fairly similar to Kyle’s. The only team I have ranked that he doesn’t is Pinole.
1. De La Salle
2. Monte Vista
3. Berkeley
4. Deer Valley
5. Amador Valley
6. Encinal
7. Granada
8. Foothill
9. Clayton Valley
10. Pittsburg
11. California
12. James Logan
13. Washington
14. Ygnacio Valley
15. Pinole Valley
October 6th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
is 15 worth 1 pt 14 2 pts and so on?
wow so that means both of you make up washington’s 8 pts…that is hilarious nobody else even has them ranked
both you guys are pretty solid i think should just be a 2 person poll for writers…
October 6th, 2009 at 6:41 pm
Yes, Norcalfball, that’s how the points go.
October 6th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
I’m not a Clayton Valley fan btw, but North Salinas was good last year, I was going off that. Compared to College Park – who is down this year and was tough last year, I should have given relative to CP. Yeah Liberty and Dublin are cupcakes, but Concord played a HELLA weak schedule De Anza Jefferson and SRV and if you look at the DVAL as a whole, CV plays a tough League schedule LOL
October 6th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
I’m willing to Bet Everybody Though That Clayton Wins League Again. Anybody?
How About This Prediction?
#1 Clayton Valley
#2 Ygnacio Valley
#3 Concord
#4 College Park
#5 Mt Diablo
#6 Northgate
Take Me Up on THis and Call Me Out When Im Wrong. Feel Free. DVAL is out of my “comfort zone” but in BVAL and EBAL
#1 Deer Valley
#2 Pittsburg
#3 Heritage
#4 Antioch
#5 Liberty
#6 Freedom
#1 Monte Vista 7-0 in league
#2 De La Salle 6-1
#3 Amador Valley 5-2
#4 Granada 3-4 lose to MV, DLS, AV, Cal
#5 Foothill 3-4 lose to MV, DLS, AV, Granada
#6 California 3-4 lose to MV, DLS, Foothill, AV
#7 San Ramon Valley 1-6
#8 Livermore 0-7
October 6th, 2009 at 8:13 pm
When Did Kenendy Ever Beat Logan? Never
Also Kyle, SRV at #15, haha fair but I would rank Cal #9 ahead of Clayton, because Cal is better than Clayton, and because they blasted an undefeated SRV team
Everybody knows Clayton plays a WEAK nonleague schedule but OVERALL their league is tough. Ygnacio the next best, Concord/CP score a lot, NG/MD eh
October 6th, 2009 at 8:13 pm
I think SRV shouldn’t be ranked just because they got blown out like Cal did against Oregon
October 6th, 2009 at 8:20 pm
oh ok Jimmy and Kyle didn’t vote for Concord. Do they have any big wins? Castlemont
How’s the OAL jimmy? and what happened with the HAAL?
anybody know if Arroyo and BOD are going to turn it around and if Hayward beats SL this friday?
peace bower good luck where ever you go
October 6th, 2009 at 9:06 pm
Is MV the favorite this week against DLS?
October 6th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
By my account, Concord has yet to have a big win. At this point, I can’t call Castlemont a big win. They are playing shorthanded right now and are struggling a bit, especially on defense where they had been one of the best units in the East Bay the past few years but are giving up a lot of yards and points. Concord’s other wins are De Anza, Jefferson and Skyline. Since I have SRV unranked (although they would be my 16th team if I had an extra spot), there’s no way I can justify ranking Concord. I’d believe Kyle would say the same thing since SRV is his No. 15.
Overall, my take on the OAL is that Oakland Tech and Oakland are clearly the top two teams right now. They play in the OAL opener Oct. 16 and that will be a good indicator of which team is the favorite. I’d put Castlemont in the third slot, followed by Mack. Those would be my projected playoff teams at this point, with Skyline and Fremont on the outside looking in. Skyline’s a little hard to gauge though after that win over O’Dowd. It’s obvious O’Dowd is down, but that’s a good win for Skyline regardless.
The HAAL is definitely down. O’Dowd bounced back from a bad nonleague effort to win big to open league play, but they are still a huge question mark. I think San Leandro vs. Hayward this week probably is the game to decide the league title. O’Dowd probably still slots in at the No. 3 spot with the rest of the league up for grabs.
October 6th, 2009 at 9:31 pm
Jamin: I don’t think you can call MV the favorite DLS has to be until they lose a game I say Kyle will have it as a 38-35 game in favor of DLS. I personally think MV can win this game even if they score half their average (46.5/g) points and hold DLS to their average (20.5) MV wins.
October 6th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
agree with most of this poll but what puts encinal and clayton valley above tough EBAL teams?
October 6th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
925 – I was just very surprised to see the comment about CV, as I had already noticed they had played a weak schedule thus far, and it made me take a look at exactly who they had played. I do think they are a good team and have as good a shot in the DVAL as anyone. College Park did play Serra in preeseason, as well as Washington, so their preseason schedule was tougher.
Someone said that Serra would beat Granada and Foothill by more than 20 points, but they only beat CP by 20. I think Foothill or Granada would beat CP by at least 20. Amador and Serra are being measured by how close they played DLS, and rightly so. But if DLS stumbles and it turns out they aren’t a top team this year, then maybe Serra and Amador aren’t that good either? We’ll see what happens this week at Monte Vista and how each of these teams does the rest of the way. I am by no means writing DLS off, but at this point with 2 losses and 2 very close wins, it is fair to speculate. Is this the year?

That’s awesome…credit to Kyle and Jimmy for posting their votes….would have guessed that’s how it would go. Hoose and Bower would have also posted, just as I did before I left…Congrats fellas for having the juevos to do so!!
October 7th, 2009 at 10:53 am
Can Encinal beat Berkeley or Monte Vista?
October 7th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
Thats a good question. I think that it would be a close call in both games.
October 7th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
Top leagues in NCS:
1. East Bay
2. Bay Valley
3. Diablo Valley
October 7th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
I think its fair to rank Encinal over some EBAL teams. There use to be a huge gap between D-1 & D-2/D-3 schools but I think that the gap has been closed a lil. Miramonte who was the 4th best D-3 team last year gave Foothill all they can last year(they got bown this year though). This year Foothill barely beat Novato who lost everybody from there team last year literally. Encinal might have the biggest line in the area for any level.
October 7th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
Matt Rempel,
Diablo Valley sucks. How can you rank the “No Speed League” (DVAL) above the ACCAL and BSAL.
October 7th, 2009 at 1:06 pm
dval
2008 3 NCS teams and Mt D was a qualifier
CV won the NCS east bay title
without Berkley the top 3 teams in the DVAl year in and year out would win the accal, and the bsal is a total joke, how many ncs titles or appearances come out of that vacuum of a league?
October 7th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
Foothill also beat Novato 48-13 last year, and Foothill also lost nearly its entire team
from last year, returning only 4 starters.
Novato hadn’t lost at home in 4 years, that’s a tough place to play.
October 7th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
BSAL??? that league is horrible.
October 7th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
Kyle,
You make some good points. Foothill has a cold rep. But last year they were saying Novato was better than Marin Catholic and Encinal because they lost to Foothill and somebody else I cant remember. Well this year Im saying Serra beats Foothill by 20+ points and Foothill just isn’t that good. Does that make any sense at all…?
October 7th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
I think Novato was ranked ahead of Encinal last year was because of Novato’s rep — being a state bowl participant, multiple NCS titles etc — Encinal was more the new kid on the block so to speak. For the same reason Encinal will be the favorite in D3 this year…
The other team Novato lost to was Valley Christian-San Jose, in a close game, and they did beat Marin Catholic 21-0. This year’s Novato team might not be as strong as it has been, but it was still good enough to beat a good Foothill-Palo Cedro team, which beat one of Washington state’s best teams up in Seattle.
Serra would be favored against Foothill, but I don’t think it would be lopsided like you suggest. The Falcons did beat Logan by 15, which could have beaten Deer Valley or Monte Vista. Foothill’s coaching staff is also one of the best in NorCal, so that right there is a great equalizer.
October 7th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
Best leagues in Northern California:
1. West Catholic
2. East Bay
3. Sierra Foothill (Roseville area)
4. Eastern (Redding/Chico)
5. Bay Valley
BSAL and ACCAL each have 3 REALLY bad teams.

when will the EBAL teams (other than DLS) step up and start playing WCAL teams in non-league? those would be great matchups and would be great for the teams and fans.
October 7th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
Cal tried to schedule Serra for this year, but Serra backed out to play Encinal instead.
I’d love to see the EBAL schools played WCAL schools as well…
October 7th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
I noticed San Leandro hasn’t been doing so well this year. 2-2 with a tough schedule, but I just had an NCS question for anybody: if San Leandro doesn’t win their league, who else gets in (assuming there are still more than 12 teams eligible for Div 1). Does San Leandro still make it in although they seem to be down this year and are playing a weak league schedule? They usually are an automatic lock, but with Granada playing great so far, should they be rooting for this type of scenario for playoff hopes?
minus the 5 champs of the EBAL, BVAL, ACCAL, MVAL, HAAL
how many second and third place Div 1 teams can make it in?
DLS, MV, Amador, Foothill, Granada, Cal High, San Ramon Valley the EBAL has half the slots presumably qualified, but the EBAL doesn’t normally get over 5 teams in do they? And how many would actually have a .500 record overall, in league, or against Division opponents. That doesnt help SRV who played 2 teams out of section and one lower division team, so they’re out. Amador played two lower division teams so they dont help at all with the Dons’ tough schedule. Cal High has early losses that might come back to hurt them. Foothill played D-2 Miramonte and got upset by Granada, so those don’t help either, but the Granada Matadors played Div 1 competition and look like they’ll qualify along with MV and DLS for sure.
Berkeley and San Leandro are the only teams from their leagues in Div 1 contention if they win titles
The BVAL has 3 teams that could make it in Deer Valley, Pitt, and Heritage, but the MVAL also has Logan, Washington, and Newark?
Man that is a loaded division with 3 leagues it seems heavyily loaded

Cal-Hi Sports:
Northern California Overall Top 15 (CIF North Open Division)
1. (1) Grant (Sacramento) 5-0 (SJS)
2. (2) De La Salle (Concord) 2-2 (NCS)
3. (3) Monte Vista (Danville) 4-0 (NCS)
4. (4) St. Mary’s (Stockton) 4-0 (SJS)
5. (5) Granite Bay 4-0 (SJS)
6. (6) Serra (San Mateo) 3-1 (CCS)
7. (8) Del Oro (Loomis) 4-0 (SJS)
8. (11) Central Catholic (Modesto) 4-0 (SJS)
9. (12) Palma (Salinas) 3-1 (CCS)
10. (10) Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove) 3-1 (SJS)
11. (13) St. Francis (Mountain View) 4-1 (CCS)
12. (14) Milpitas 4-0 (CCS)
13. (15) Berkeley 4-0 (NCS)
14. (NR) Folsom 4-0 (SJS)
15. (NR) Los Gatos 3-1 (CCS)
Rundown: Previous No. 7 Foothill of Pleasanton had to drop out this week after its upset loss to Granada of Livermore. Since Granada has a loss to 4-0 Sierra of Manteca of the Sac-Joaquin Section, this shows again the advantage in strength that Sac-Joaquin teams seem to have these days over the Bay Area. Previous No. 9 Lincoln of Stockton also fell out even though the Trojans lost to No. 4 St. Mary’s. The 48-18 margin of defeat is enough to force Lincoln to work its way back up the rankings. Of the newcomers, Folsom has displayed a high-octane offense with QB Dano Graves operating in the spread, but has yet to play a significant opponent. The Sacramento Bee now ranks the Bulldogs ahead of Pleasant Grove, but jumping them up that high in the overall NorCal top 15 was too much and not justified. Besides, Folsom and Pleasant Grove will meet on the field in a Delta River League game on Nov. 6 so that comparison will be decided on the field.
*******************************************************
- Grant is also ranked #10 in the nation, according to Rivals.Com
- So according to Cal-Hi Sports NorCal Top-15 Poll. The top 3-teams in the NCS are De La Salle; Monte Vista and Berkeley.
October 7th, 2009 at 6:31 pm
Though below is the recent Cal-Hi Sports Bay Area Top 20 Rankings:
*You will see that the EBAL has 4 of the top-5 ranked teams, among the NCS schools listed in this poll. Berkeley is the 3rd best NCS ranked team. With Pittsburg; Deer Valley (Antioch); Heritage (Brentwood) and Amador Valley being the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th best.
1. (1) De La Salle (Concord) 2-2
The Spartans evened their record but it wasn’t easy against the visiting upstart Dons of Amador Valley. In order to keep intact a streak of 177 victories against Bay Area opponents, head coach Bob Ladouceur’s boys had to fight back from an 11-point halftime deficit for a 32-21 win. The defense did most of the work, creating two turnovers that led to two of three third quarter touchdowns that put the game away. Although the Dons came in undefeated, they weren’t considered one of the top three or four teams in the East Bay Athletic League. If that’s the case, the Spartans better start lacing those cleats real tight to keep the streak going, starting this week on the road at Monte Vista.
2. (2) Monte Vista (Danville) 4-0
The Mustangs couldn’t be coming into the matchup at home with De La Salle in better shape, after a 55-13 victory in their EBAL opener on the road in Livermore. UCLA-bound signal caller Brett Nottingham went over the 300-yard mark for the third straight week, completing 17-of-21 for 328 yards and four touchdowns, all in the first half. Greg Johnson continued to be the workhorse, rushing 12 times for 101 yards and a touchdown, and catching three passes for 96 yards. If ever there was a Bay Area team that seemed poised to pull off what no one has done since 1991, it would appear to be Coach Craig Bergman’s charges. Still, Bergman was circumspect in looking ahead to the game. “They’re really not that down this year,” he told CalHiSports.com last week at practice but before last weekend’s action.
3. (3) Serra (San Mateo) 3-1
4. (5) Palma (Salinas) 3-1
5. (6) St. Francis (Mountain View) 3-1
6. (7) Milpitas 4-0
7. (8) Berkeley 5-0
8. (9) Los Gatos 3-1
9. (10) Bellarmine (San Jose) 3-1
10. (18) Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) 4-0
11. (NR) Granada (Livermore) 3-1
Foothill coach Matt Sweeney told us the Matadores were for real, and after they came to Pleasanton and registered a 35-28 victory we don’t need any more convincing. State track 200-meter fourth-place medalist George Atkinson Jr., son of the former Raiders’ defensive back by the same name, got a different 200 in this game, rushing for an even 200 yards on 11 carries with three TDs on runs of 66, 80 and 20 yards. He also added a 95-yard kickoff return for a fourth trip to paydirt. Coach Tim Silva’s boys get the big bump after reviewing their record and seeing their only loss is 27-26 to 4-0 Manteca Sierra on a late touchdown.
12. (4) Foothill (Pleasanton) 3-1
How far to drop the Falcons was pretty much determined by where Granada was placed in these rankings. Up next is San Ramon Valley on the road in Danville.
13. (12) Pittsburg 1-3
14. (13) Deer Valley (Antioch) 4-0
15. (14) Novato 3-2
16. (15) San Benito (Hollister) 5-0
17. (11) Valley Christian (San Jose) 3-1
18. (16) Encinal (Alameda) 3-1
19. (18) Casa Grande (Petaluma) 4-0
20. (17) Heritage (Brentwood) 3-1
On the Bubble
Amador Valley (Pleasanton) 3-1, Analy (Sebastopol) 4-1, California (San Ramon) 2-2, Cardinal Newman (Santa Rosa) 1-3, Carmel 4-0, Clayton Valley (Concord) 5-0, Hayward 3-1, Healdsburg 4-1 James Logan (Union City) 2-3, Marin Catholic (Kentfield) 4-1, Miramonte (Orinda) 2-2, Oakland Tech (Oakland) 4-1, Palo Alto 3-1, Petaluma 5-0, Pinole Valley (Pinole) 4-0, Pioneer (San Jose) 4-0, San Ramon Valley (Danville) 3-1, Sequoia (Redwood City) 4-0, St. Ignatius (San Francisco) 2-2, Watsonville 3-1, Windsor 4-1, Ygnacio Valley (Concord) 4-0.
October 7th, 2009 at 7:12 pm
No wonder Newark why got whooped by Milpitas, they’re ranked 12th in Norcal by Cal Preps.
October 7th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
I would shy away from badmouthing the BSAL.
Encinal ncs champs
St. Pats 21 game winning streak and numerous championships and upsets
Piedmont will beat you if you take them lightly.
St. Marys beat Salesian and Acalanes this year already.
BSAL has lots and lots of speed, and yes, Encinal has the biggest OL in the bay area this year
October 7th, 2009 at 11:09 pm
BSAL is horrible.
October 7th, 2009 at 11:23 pm
Besides Encinal and maybe St. Pats the BSAL is horrible. St. Marys are a little better than last year but they are still not that good. They think that they are better than what they really are. Piedmont is still wasting there time with that A-11 bullcrap. That offense is holding them back from being the 2nd in the league. Albany has the biggest school in that league and are still a bad team. Swett, Kennedy, and Moreau are just awful. Not alot of good in this league. Maybe with the addition of Encinal will raise the BSAL level of play.
October 8th, 2009 at 12:20 am
I don’t know if Encinal has the biggest O-line in the bay but they do have a very big line. They are good and fast off the ball.
October 8th, 2009 at 8:31 am
Encinal loses to Serra only by two touchdowns, and Serra almost beat DLS, and killed a very good El Cerrito team, and rolled Alameda who is average this year, but higher level. Last year, beats Marin Catholic and Novato too.
St. Pats has wins vs. much bigger schools yearly and many coaches duck out from playing them – total chicken. St. Pat’s will play anybody, but many schools run away from them.
Piedmont upset Drake and Dougherty Valley, with loses in overtime to undefeated So Cal team, and strong St. Mary’s team.
St. Mary’s beats Salesian, Piedmont and Acalanes (who beat Las Lomas, and St. Mary’s spanked Acalanes). St. Mary’s only loss is to Heritage – Division I, whose only loss is to Monte Vista.
Kennedy, Swett and Albany are down yes.
Watch out for Moreau – might win 6 or 7 games in 2009. They are handpicking inner city kids from Hayward and giving them financial assistance, and they are loaded with numbers coming up. Moreau is on the rise.
October 8th, 2009 at 8:49 am
To ManDown ———— I understand that you, “don’t know if Encinal has the biggest O-line in the bay”
But YES they do ————- I know.
October 8th, 2009 at 11:14 am
Last Season The Jet O-Line averaged about 220-240 with 1 300 pounder. This year the average about 270 with 3 300+ linemen. And the thing is,They can move. Jet Pride!
October 8th, 2009 at 12:07 pm
I agree with you. The BSAL is rising but that league is still BAD. If it were not for Encinal nobody would be talking about the BSAL.
October 9th, 2009 at 8:02 am
The league speed and athleticism of the BSAL is so underrated and unaccounted for by valley area teams.
West and Southwest of the Tunnel, and East of 680 is where 90% of the speedy athletes are.
Taking nothing away from quality programs that do a great job, but for incredible playmakers, go West and Far east.
October 9th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
Isn’t the BSAL the league Moreau left to after stating it was unable to compete with the teams in the HAAL?
October 9th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
Because all that matters is the record at the end of the season and who the teams played. It you don’t win it don’t matter. Who cares about the talent and speed its all about how many W’s you have. THATS IT! You want respect you earn it by winning games and beating quality opponents. Look at the top your league and takes notes on what Encinal has done over the past couple of years.
October 9th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
Well some leagues get more hype than others, but the BSAL does have athletes, but they have to beat some teams from bigger and better conferences.
October 9th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Marin Catholic, Novato, Acalanes,
October 10th, 2009 at 1:42 am
Scouting Encinal tonight,
Piedmont exposed the Jets weakness, even though Piedmont had what seemed to be a dozen starters on the sidelines not even suited up to play, and that stud QB was out the whole game too.
Piemdont had the ball almost the whole first half, and pounded hard, it was only 14 – 0 at halftime for Jets, with Piedmont havng the ball 4 times inside the Jets 15-yard line.
Watch out for St Pats if the Jets are looking ahead.
Run the ball between the Tackles to beat the Jets.
October 11th, 2009 at 9:34 am

#85 Thats pretty sad but true. Shows how short sided the administration is at Moreau. HAAL sucks right now.
October 11th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
Moreau looks pretty good right now and suprised a few people. Jet Pride.
October 11th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
St. Marys
Encinal
St. Pats
Moreau
Piedmont
Swett
Albany
Kennedy
This is how the league will finish 2009 BSAL
October 11th, 2009 at 6:26 pm
BSAL has represented well over the last several years. 2006 St. Pat’s ncs champs, 2007 St. Pat’s ncs runnerup 12-1, , 21 game win streak over 2 seasons. Encinal 13-0 in 2008 ncs champs. Teams have ducked St. Pat’s over the years, tried games vs. Palma and Cardinal Newman, both backed out. Piedmont has made ncs playoffs for several yrs, St. Mary’s is riding high this year. Too bad Salesian is not in the league, they have been winning for a long time, remember Javid Best. Encinal is better off being in the BSAL than the ACCAL. BSAL has more consistant programs and good coaching. They are most likely to put at least 3 teams to playoffs this year.
October 11th, 2009 at 6:39 pm
I’m not Gonna sell St.Mary’s Short because Keith Minor is a pretty good Coach but I really believe my Jets will repeat as BSAL Champs. Jet Pride!
October 11th, 2009 at 6:45 pm
If Encinal played BHS they would win. If BHS plays De La Salle in the playoffs they will seriouly loose.
I am glad Old Former got that blog straightned out with Encinal coach, it might have not even been him.
October 11th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
Phatpat #89 Piedmont tried to run between the tackles and it got them only six points so how do you figure that that will work? We got two studs at inside LB that hit like Sledehammers. Don’t believe the hype! Jet Pride!
October 11th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
If is a big question,we will have to wait and see, dont look ahead of any games, in the Great EBAL,Maybe Coach Joe will apply for the Berkeley job at the end of the season and we could possible have a game, remember they Left the ACCAL. Stop Rickey Galvan and ill be quite, otherwise; Run Rickey Run, Go Jackets! 6 games over 1150 yards rushing
October 11th, 2009 at 7:12 pm
yo mama
encinal has a good team with a coach that is getting the most out of his players. many of them are playing both ways. many of the teams in the bsal just about have the same number of players on their rosters.
encinal wins with the better player.(speed,etc.).
berkeley has no one playing both ways with back ups that could start at any other school and star. This years team has been together since the 9th grade and many playing together since they were 8 yrs old. Dls has not been beaten by a local team so what would encinal do against them. The 2009 jackets are taking one game at a time and working hard everyday to get better.
October 11th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
Galvin would run all over DLS and yes Coach Carter and his jackets r taking it one week at a time and I think are #1 in the Bay right now and could possibly go to state if they get pass DLS in NCS but we will see if DLS gets out of the EBAL
October 11th, 2009 at 10:32 pm
Cash flow we have to play one game at a time. DLS has a great D- Line, it would be exciting and a thriller, lets hope and pray, that we get that far, cause we have to win one first, a playoff game, then we will see. Thanks for the respect, my man Jimmy D is a believer, just keep supporting the underdawg. Run Rickey Run, Go Jackets!
October 11th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
I totally agree……Run rickey run
October 11th, 2009 at 10:55 pm
Valley Christian beat Harker
October 11th, 2009 at 11:02 pm
–”but we will see if DLS gets out of the EBAL”
man the suspense is killing me- how will the Spartans survive the EBAL???
October 12th, 2009 at 5:31 am
No clue Junior. Let’s just pray the 18 years of good luck, bad calls, and poor timing keep going their way. I’m through dealing with the “hating” of DLS on here.
As for the Valley Christian game; I happened to watch the first half of their game against Harker. Good lord! Their fullback is unbelievable. They also have a pretty speedy scat back in #3. But, their fullback, #4 Jeremiah Walters, is a monster! I watched the kid just flat back player after player after player. Then they decided to give him the ball at tail and his first play was somewhere along the lines of a 30 – 35 yard run. He couldn’t stay at tail because he was also the starting left defensive end as well as there being so much depth with #3 and #11. The kid is only a junior. I thought it was a great game played by Harker even though they were clearly the lesser athletic team. Great job by those kids and their coaches.
October 12th, 2009 at 9:33 am
The Moreau – St. Mary’s game will be a battle, seems like St. Marys has every game at home this year? How did that happen?
Does Moreau stand a reasonable chance, appears like the top 5 teams in BSAL can play each other well? No?
If St. Marys beats Moreau, sets up for the league title showdown the next week at Encinal. What a game that will be, the talent, size and speed on that field will be unparalleled at Division III level in Nor Cal.
October 12th, 2009 at 9:37 am
Question, was Piedmont’s QB out vs. Encinal?
Did he sit out?
Anybody?
October 12th, 2009 at 10:06 am
San Leandro 20 lge game win streak and still underdogs in lge????? No respect…
October 12th, 2009 at 11:06 am
Yeah the started Craigie was out for the game. Jet Pride!
October 12th, 2009 at 11:15 am
San leandro gets no respect but will end the season 8-2 and beat hayward by 46 points….
October 12th, 2009 at 11:38 am
PhatPat… I hope St. Marys are is good as you are hyping them up to be. I give St. Marys props for the wins they put together this year and I hope more success to them in the future. Honestly what makes you think that St. Marys will beat Encinal? You say that Piedmont exposed the jets but Piedmont still got killed in that game.
San Leandro might not be the team they used to be but they still run the HAAL. Why not respect from the league?
October 12th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
biship o dowd is the 2nd best team in the league and was should have been beat by mt. eden who was beat by san leandro 55-0, Hayward could make a run at second they look extremely unorganized but they have playmakers which always help Bottom Line: San Leandro will not come close to loosing in league. Their talent level isn’t much greater then every team in that league but their coaching from freshman to varsity is heads and toes over any staff in that league
October 12th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
sorry i meant biship o dowd should have been beat not was
October 12th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
Calpreps prediction last week..Hayward 26 San leandro 24….
October 12th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
BOD is not that great. They just have a really fast RB
October 12th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
BOD is still good enough to be 2nd in league they destroyed Tennyson whom some thought was going to challenge for league this year. I just don’t see them losing to anyone else this year except Hayward.
October 12th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
and Hayward is a long shot because of their youth but overall ahtlethism makes up for alot
October 12th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
SAN LORENZO!!!!!!
October 12th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
SLZ is playing good football @ 2 and 0 in lge….
October 12th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
phatpat if playing moreau is goin to be a battle like u say then how you guys gonna win on the road at encinal? moreau is very weak my friend.
October 12th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
Slz is kind of an enigma to me. How did they beat CV and almost loose to Tennyson? Seems like a very inconsistant team, I guess we won’t see who they are until they play a contender.
October 12th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
I hear castro valley jus got a big weapon back..Reciever supposed to be pretty good.. could make a late run…
October 12th, 2009 at 3:25 pm
Allowedtohaveanopinion, SLZ plays a contender this Saturday against BOD.
October 12th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
some of these comments are crazy a late run for CV they will win 3 games at the most 2-8 or 3-7
