Since Cal is already ranked above Monte Vista does that mean Cal will not go up in rank at all if they win on Friday?
November 2nd, 2009 at 5:15 pm
not if wash is up there. =p
November 2nd, 2009 at 5:17 pm
That is what I thought. Still being haunted by that loss.
November 2nd, 2009 at 5:22 pm
Amazing how a few plays can change a season.
-Cal had double-digit leads at half in its losses to Del Oro and Amador Valley and had a lead against Washington with 15 seconds left before losing.
-Monte Vista had leads in two of its losses (De La Salle, Foothill) and came within a yard of scoring the go-ahead score in the final minute against Amador before losing in overtime.
Three tough losses to swallow for each team.

Ygnacio Valley vs the DVAL (whole games) @YVTV (google)
November 2nd, 2009 at 5:45 pm
How much is Washington’s ranking bouyed by Cal’s ranking and the fact that Washington must be ranked higher because of the win? What does that predict for the Washington vs. Logan game? Does the prediction factor in the win over Cal?
November 2nd, 2009 at 6:34 pm
Kyle if MV gives it to D.Wilkerson on first and goal from the 2 against DLS, Nottingham doesn’t throw 2 picks for scores against Foothill and AV plus the ugly call by the Ref’s they are 8-0 or 7-1 I think their loses though bad are still much better than some wins on the board by others.
November 2nd, 2009 at 6:38 pm
2210- man that’s ALOT of IF’s!
November 2nd, 2009 at 6:41 pm
True…
November 2nd, 2009 at 6:52 pm
If Foothill doesn’t come out of the locker room late for the second half against Granada, getting a 15 yard penalty on the kickoff, the only one Langford cannot put in the end zone, Atkinson does not run it back for a TD, Foothill wins.
If Mannion does not throw an INT at his 10 yard line for a TD against SRV, and they fumble the ensuing kickoff, Foothill wins.
If I don’t get pelted with eggs by some San Ramon kids while in the visitor’s stands watching the loss against Cal…okay there is no way that outcome changes.
November 2nd, 2009 at 6:54 pm
WHAT IF?…With Concord winning 22-20, fourty-one seconds left, San Ramon has 1 time-out left, and Concords running back doesn’t turn the ball over, after gaining a first down, Concord WINS! AHHHhhh, WHAT IF?
The game of the WEEK: Concord vs. YV Saturday…Be there…Toss Up…Yeah Right…The BOMBS will be DROPPING from the SKY!
November 2nd, 2009 at 7:01 pm
Langford must have missed the endzone by two yards in the Cal game since Kyle Alverez ran it back 98 yards for a TD.
November 2nd, 2009 at 7:40 pm
My point being, playing the What If game will drive you crazy.
November 2nd, 2009 at 7:49 pm
And mine being, amazing how many close games have been played this year.
November 2nd, 2009 at 8:19 pm
kyle, do you think the freshman teams at DLS or Grant would beat the varsity team at Mission San Jose?
November 2nd, 2009 at 8:19 pm
sorry but had to ask it.
November 2nd, 2009 at 8:26 pm
…not cool.
November 2nd, 2009 at 10:22 pm
Thats kind of a low blow Renegades 10. You gotta hand it to those MSJ players who come out every day for practice and games with virtually no chance of winning. If Moreau could move out of the HAAL for football, maybe MSJ should consider moving out of the MVAL, but at least they keep showing up.
I like the rankings. Never seen such parity in the EBAL like this year. Would have liked to see Granada get in there, but probably not going to happen, their win against Foothill looks less impressive as the season ends, I’m sure they will beat Livermore.
November 2nd, 2009 at 10:27 pm
i know and i feel for them at that school. i used to live there and know a lot of families and kids who went there and still go there. i remember when they had to cancel the varsity season awhile back because they didnt have enough kids for varsity. they have a situation where the school gets kids from all over the district because of how good it is academically. but from personal knowledge they have parents there that will not allow there kids to compete in their sport on the day before a test or if they have too much homework. it’s too bad but it is what it is. but you are looking at a team that if not for a win by forfeit against albany (a game that albany won 28-6 on the field) they would be on a current 20 game losing streak and the previous two seasons were shutout 7 times and this season already have been shutout 5 times. so it begs the question as too how bad can a team be? it was uncalled for shouldn’t have said it, it just popped into my head?
November 2nd, 2009 at 10:28 pm
again my bad
November 2nd, 2009 at 10:34 pm
Mission San Jose actually has a great athletic program.
Obviously football isn’t their thing, but tennis, volleyball, swimming, girls golf, wrestling are all good. And don’t forget, the best badminton program in NCS.
I’m not sure about them drawing from all over the district … I’ve heard rumors before that houses in the MSJ district go for as high as 10% more than similar houses in the city, just so families can send their kids to Mission.
I covered a lot of MSJ football games in 2006 and 2007, the kids never got too down and worked their butts off. They just don’t get the numbers or size to compete in football.
November 2nd, 2009 at 10:46 pm
Also little known MSJ fact: Usua Amana, who starred at Bellarmine Prep in San Jose through last year and is now at Stanford, lived in the MSJ attendance area and played in the Fremont Football League.
November 2nd, 2009 at 11:23 pm
Renegade,
Way to man up. Accepted. Keep it +++++ for the kids while b-fan and ebal 1 slugfest (btw, best pinball game out there for you boomers in love with the pastime) continues- those two almost as funny as minutemanmom…(double meaning on her handle if you’re paying attention!)
November 2nd, 2009 at 11:45 pm
shouldnt Berkeley be #2… and Ygnacio Valley at least 10.?
November 2nd, 2009 at 11:57 pm
no.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:02 am
i have no problem admitting when i was wrong. kyle i lived there up until 2000 over in the washington district and there were plenty of kids from my area who went to MSJ. I left right as Fremont started to really get big in population size. Now as Fremont is bigger its much more difficult for kids to be able to go to school in another district. and yes with the development boom many are trying to get apartments in the mission district let alone a house. no doubt that in comparison to the other schools academically msj is by far the best.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:03 am
Kyle, you are right about the 10% increase in prices of homes in that area. I know a gal who used to live a couple of blocks away from the campus. They got a knock on the door and a family from Japan offered to pay them about $100,000 more than their home was worth. They were’t even thinking about selling the home at the time, but took the money and ran. They were told that Mission San Jose HS was well known overseas.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:05 am
Hey Kyle, you guys didn’t turn the clock on this website back this weekend for daylight savings. It is only 11:05, not 12:05.
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:10 am

KillerD’s – Big Game Predictions Week # 9:
ACCAL:
El Cerrito at Alameda –
Who will show up for the Green & White uniformed Gauchos? Doctor Jekyl or Mister Hyde?
Predicting the results for this year’s El Cerrito’s team is like trying to guess the weather on a tropical island – stormy, sunny, stormy or sunny? Hmmm…let’s go with….stormy?
Both teams lost to Encinal rather not well and both teams beat Pinole. So, that leaves the one remaining common opponent remaining Berkeley. EC got killed and shut out by Berkeley at EC, while the Hornets of Alameda did rather well vs. the DI talent-laden Yellow Jackets at Berkeley, and only lost by two touchdowns.
That factoid leads this NCS football lover/prognosticator to go with a Black-n-Gold swarm of angry Hornets on D to somewhat shut down EC’s best talent, and also allowing the Alameda offense to keep things on the ground more than EC wants it to.
Prediction: Alameda – 29 vs. El Cerrito – 17
DFAL:
Campolindo at Acalanes –
In recent years this late in the regular season, expectantly Campo is limbering up for a Top # 4-8 seed in the NCS playoffs, working on some “new packages” and sending out their JV and Frosh coaching staffs to scout potential playoff opponents. “Oh what a difference a year makes – and Oh what a difference Talent level makes.” The volatile ocean known as the up and down Talent-Level of high school football at great public schools has been put on full display in 2009 throughout the DFAL except for this year’s best team – Alhambra. The DFAL, a powerhouse league dripping with good playmakers usually, has been victimized by a precipitous drop in speed and upper level talent this year, except for Alhambra.
Acalanes is the beneficiary of this year’s overall league decline, and the Don’s ground beef rushing attack makes a weaker DFAL stable of opponents wince when prepping for Acalanes. Acalanes beat a weak Las Lomas this year, but then did play Alhambra very tough, they also a very down Miramonte squad, the same Miramonte that crushed Campolindo. The Cougars of Moraga will have to throw, throw and throw to beat Acalanes, but it’s very difficult to toss the ball around when your offensive team is standing on the sidelines watching Acalanes eat up 8-minutes off the clock with an 18-play drive bruising, yawning drive.
Prediction: Acalanes – 24 vs. Camplindo – 14
DVAL:
Concord at Ygnacio Valley –
One would think a comparison of common opponents would be enough to pick the winner of this outstanding contest upcoming. But that would be mere ‘child’s play’ for in-depth high school football clarevoyants wanting to delve deeper into this juicy matchup.
The key to this pick rests in the game pitting Skyline vs. Oakland Tech earlier this year. What?
Oakland Tech’s team speed gave YV major problems and causes young Coach Turner to make adjustments afterwards. But, Concord wiped Skyline off the map by 50-points, even though Skyline played Oakland Tech above average. Morale of the Story – Concord can score on anybody and YV cannot. Concord’s QB will fire bullets all over the field, and the Minutemen will run enough draws and screens to keep the Warriors scrambling defense off balance. And, YV will counter with a more balanced approach, but that will be harder and harder to do once Concord gets on a roll and opens up a 17-point lead midway through the 3rd quarter. YV will be forced to pass most of the time, and the trap will close shut.
This is Concord’s year and they are not only playing for the DVAL title this week, but wanting to hang 50-points in hopes of earning the # 1 seed in the D2 playoffs.
Prediction: Concord – 44 vs. Ygnacio Valley – 21
EBAL:
California at Monte Vista –
The thing separating Monte Vista from the EBAL cellar resting atop Livermore’s head is their win over Granada who had lost their QB for the season. On paper to a casual observer, this game appears to be close, but the fire-and-brimstone solid young Coach Bellicci has the Cal High team gathering steam, ramping up for a killer showdown with his DLS alma-mater next week, and the 2009 version of the MV Mustangs have suddenly become a Tune Up game for the Grizz.
Cal will use a crushing ground game, good enough passing game and varied pass coverage to keep the awesome Nottingham off the field as much as possible, and hesitant and flinchy when he is on it. Nottingham will get his throwing yards and TD’s, but his numbers will not eclipse those he put up vs. Foothill two weeks ago on ESPNU.
Prediction: Cal High – 30 vs. Monte Vista – 21
MCAL:
Terra Linda at Tamalpais –
Tamalpais will blow out the upstart but very average Trojans hoping to impress the NCS selection committee as they tune up for their big game with Marin Catholic next week. Terra Linda has no chance, and Tam is only hoping to be 100% healthy for the trial next week vs. a D3 top 3 seed.
Prediction: Tamalpais – 35 vs. Terra Linda-14
MVAL:
James Logan at Washington –
Ever since Washington beat Cal high in their opener, they have garnered attention and a proper ranking above Cal high in this week’s poll. And after the biggest NCS school in Nor Cal Logan got slapped in the face twice on each cheek by Foothill, they have been clamoring for respect while slowly working their way back up to a 6-3 record.
Problem is, Logan has beaten Nobody worthy of a true Division I playoff upper echelon team.
So, Logan will come out and play inspired football, all the while knowing they are fighting for their NCS playoff life. However, Washington is too strong across the board and will outfox the Colts in the 4th quarter.
Prediction: Washington – 29 vs. Logan – 17
SCAL:
Case Grande at Healdsburg:
Rain is going to be a factor in this contest, and it will do wonders to slow down the bigger, faster and stronger Casa Grande team, as they battle the Greyhounds on a clumpy and soggier than usual turf. But, are the Hounds of Healdsburg a “Mudder Team?”
Could be, and all fans of Greyhound football (especially the staff and players) understand a major upset of the Gauchos will do wonders for their NCS playoff seeding big time. But, dreams are one thing and reality is another, especially on the unforgiving grid iron vs. a physically superior opponent playing well too. Healdsburg is very well coached and so is Casa Grande, given those two facts – it comes down to the number of Weapons on each team.
Casa has more firepower than the Hounds and that will be the difference in the game as the Hounds get kenneled.
Prediction: Casa Grande – 24 vs. Healdsburg 15
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:50 am
Not bad KillerD. I think that EC will have to score 30 to beat Alameda. Its pretty much all on how there D can suck it up & stop the run & how EC’s QB will play. Alameda’s play has been pretty consistent overall. If EC’s QB can slice & dice Alameda’s sub par secondary & get the ball to Goins & Williams then they could put up 30 to win.
You don’t do OAL games? I got Castle beating Tech pretty easily. Watched the Tech vs YV game. Tech is loaded but terrible. No identity. Tried to throw a fade bout 11 times in the first 14 plays.
Fremont gonna give O-High the business. O-high hurting without their QB Who also played good D.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:02 am
I will do the Silver Bowl, love the OAL too.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:39 am
Wow. I guess you all were right. I guess 1,300 yds. gets your name out there. Happy to report, the college attention has finally arrived for DBR!
Go Panthers!
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:13 pm
KillerD: If AV can put 35 up on Cal then MV can do better they are not just a passing team they can run the ball too. This is going to be a very good contest I think you will be suprised this is no warm up game for Cal.
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:04 pm
AV put up 35 on Cal after Cal imploded and gave up two unforced fumbles and a pick. Cal needs to stay focused. If they do they should win.
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:29 pm
Predicting any team will hold MV to 21 Is pretty ballsy, seeing as DLS barely accomplished that, so you might want to rethink that one.
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:38 pm
AV did it too.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:36 pm
Because of turnovers and bad calls and MV held AV to 14
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:49 pm
MV needs to focus on their run defense. Cal has a power running game- the kind that MV cannot stop. If Cal doesnt turn the ball over too much- I believe they beat MV.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:58 pm
They might have a power running game, but if theirs isn’t better than DLS’s running game, doubting their defense is better, then they will have a tough job ahead to pull out a win.
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:26 pm
There hasn’t been much chatter about Cal’s Kyle Alvarez. He’s a player to look out for.
Hands down, the best kick returner I’ve seen this year (that includes Atkinson) … really quick and has good top-end speed as well. Mix him with fullback Gio Javier and a healthier Reggie Davis and its as complete a running game as there is in the East Bay.
None of those guys are on the level Galvin or Ward is, but that’s three elite ball-carriers on one team. Cal will move the ball on the MV D, the question will be if the Cal D can force a few turnovers or slow down the MV offense…
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:36 pm
WHOO HOO PANTHER FAN!!!!! GO DBR!!!! That’s awesome Share some details, please!!!
Go Ps!
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:40 pm
the main key for MV is going to be to get ahead of Cal early. Cal’s run sets up the pass. And if they are forced to pass a lot more then they would like it will cause tough problems for them. MV is really going to have to show some grit on the defensive side of the ball to stop Alvarez and Javier. If Cal is able to use the run to grind out yards and keep the ball out of Nottingham’s hands then it will be tough for MV to win.
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:03 pm
Kyle were would you place the guys from AV on the list Stancil and Turney MV did a good job against them I believe they had 270 combined but again not many pts.
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:35 pm
Turay ran all over MV 22-for-170, there really wasn’t an answer for him.
Stancil is different because he runs a lot of draws, read-option keepers, and QB sweeps. Sira does a nice job finding ways to take advantage of his skill set.
Neither of those guys are very similar to the guys at Cal.
Alvarez is the fastest of all of them.
Davis probably has the best combination of power and speed.
If you want 2 yards, Javier is your best bet.
Stancil is the shiftiest and Turay is just a tough guy to bring down — although Cal did a good job on him.
Not many points in the MV game for Amador, but the yardage was there. The secondary bailed the front-7 out with a couple INTs if I’m not mistaken.
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:58 pm
whats greg johnson’s status for the game? without him Cal just has to focus on stopping the passing game. with him it gives MV something to keep the Cal D offbalance.
November 3rd, 2009 at 7:02 pm
99% of AV’s offense goes through Stancil and Turay. They have other ‘playmakers’, but I don’t think any of the other backs have carried the ball more than 5 times total this season. Cal’s ran game is much more balanced.
November 3rd, 2009 at 7:23 pm
I think that MV is going to have their hands full with CAL. You can break the game down to Cal’s Pass Defense vs MV’s rush defense. I think Cal will run all over Mv and therefore Mv needs to Score everytime Nottingham steps on the field which is entirely possible.
My guess is this will be a high scoring, close game. Which ever team can win the turnover battle will win the game.
My prediction, MV by a hair. 28-24
November 3rd, 2009 at 7:24 pm
Not sure about Johnson’s status, but Mike Sullas has actually been pretty good as his replacement and Wilkerson is running the ball again. He’s a load to bring down and was very good last year.
As for AV, Ewanich, Osterholt, Christensen, Worsey, Petros and Banahan all have played well when called upon — it just doesn’t happen very often.
November 3rd, 2009 at 7:29 pm
I agree with Ren10, I think Cal takes the game over MV.
November 3rd, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Does anybody know if Rickey commited to Wazzu? Scout.com led me to believe that he did.
November 3rd, 2009 at 7:44 pm
Outsider, Junior, when you say, “Cal needs to stay focused. If they do they should win”, and “If Cal doesnt turn the ball over too much- I believe they beat MV”, you state the obvious. C’mon, the “focused” teams who don’t “turn the ball over” almost always win. … If a healthy Monte Vista shows up to play, the “focus” will be on the Cal passing game after awhile. If not, the “focus” will be on how mobile Nottingham may have to be.
November 3rd, 2009 at 7:55 pm
I will not speak for Junior but what I mean is that both teams are close in ability so a screw up might mean the game. In the AV vs. SRV game AV turned the ball over seven times and still won because AV is a better team than SRV. I feel that Cal is the better team so should win, but probably not by much.
November 3rd, 2009 at 7:58 pm
Manowar- AV turned over the ball 6 or 7 times and still beat SRV. My point was, Cal is not good enough to overcome a bunch of TO’s and still beat MV. However, if Cal stays away from the TO bug, I believe they beat MV.
You say the focus will be on Cal’s passing game after a while-Cal will run right down MV’s throat-MV will know its coming, but still wont be able to stop it. Kaehler is good enough to make some throws to help in the scoring dept. Cal is capable of scoring about 30 points on MV-enough to give MV its 4th Ebal loss.
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:12 pm
wash and logan friday night huge game everyone is gunna be there. telivised on comcast whose not goin?
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:14 pm
who are they key players an who has an outline on how the game will turn out?
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:23 pm
each team’s stars are their do everything qb’s Willis for Logan and Ross for Washington. Both of them are playmakers the question will be who is going to step up around them. Washington had a very good preseason win against Cal High. Logan had three losses in the preseason but played #8 Monte Vista and and #2 Deer Valley tough and lost each by a field goal.
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:32 pm
I think Washington and Logan are closer in strength than the poll shows. Should be a good game.
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:42 pm
Yes J and O, saw the Amador-SRV game and AV clearly the better team. Fumbling at the goal line meant interesting first half but the power won out – making this a different matchup than Cal-MV, which could be closer than we think if MV healthy and their passing attack can create enough damage. Yes, Cal running game strong and couldn’t be stopped by Foothill (missing best defender, and 2 more). If Nottingham avoids pressure better than Mannion did, MV passing will likely be more successful, making potential for really interesting game vs. Cal ground attack time-heavy drives.
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:46 pm
Monte Vista is at home so could give them some support. Then there is always the trick with the lights.
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:22 pm
They have used that light trick against Cal before but it was too little too late then.
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:23 pm
Its not a light trick… They forget to change the timer. Stupidity not strategy
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:13 pm
He will announce tomorrow, Run Rickey Run, Go Jackets!
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:28 pm
congrats to rickey lots of hard work, k cooglars next
go jackets
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:47 pm
Possible factor on MV-Cal field position, Eidman is strong, usually hits the endzone, MV covers the kicks well. Mentioning the lights – I think it’s Kyle: Langford has 35+ touchbacks this year but every time Kyle shows up, somebody runs one back for a TD. Not only that, every time Kyle shows up to a SRV game also, the lights are bad. Rumors of him being extraterrestrial are overblown – but could this explain why he’s so good on info and blog predictions?
November 4th, 2009 at 7:32 am
I’ll tell you what! watch for out for Concord High Football folks! There play is very impressive both on offense and defense. This team has great position players and well coached. Though I’m a loyal {Antioch Panther Alumn) with decent knoweledge of the game I must say,,,, Great Job Concord! keep it up, your program has made great progress.
November 4th, 2009 at 9:58 am
Concord. Ha….What a joke
November 4th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
hey jimmy, kyle was wondering if you guys would be willing to make a list of some of the top juniors and sophs that have been on varsity teams and been playing? would also be good to get other posters ideas on that. I know the season is only a little past halfway for teams that make playoffs but it’s good to talk about guys who we will be seeing next year.
My list in no particular order
Juniors:
Dylan Wynn (DLS)
Blake Renaud (DLS)
Kyle Alvarez (Cal)
Michael Ned (Berkeley)
Ricky LLoyd (Concord)
Bryce McGovern (MV)
Michael Cunningham (Alameda)
Jonathan Allen (Encinal)
Deandre Carter (Washington)
Lucas Shapiro (DLS)
Antoine Pickett (DLS- he’s been injured for most of the season but he is a rock in the secondary and him being healthy will help that unit out a lot. He was out against AV, MV, SRV. Played a few series against Granada and a lot against Livermore)
Sophs:
Bart Houston (DLS)
Jon Trodder (Encinal)
Anthony Williams (DLS)
Michael Barton (DLS)
I know there are a lot of DLS guys up there but that’s the team I know the best. Tried to list as many people from other teams as I knew about or have seen. Feel free to add on.
November 4th, 2009 at 9:20 pm
Renegades, if I’m not mistaken MV/Nottingham’s entire starting recieving core is Juniors and Sophmores.
