Jimmy,
Our AD announced to the team that he got a call from someone at NCS explaining that DIV would expand up to 16 teams and that ANY team that qualified and applied would make the playoffs. (Needless to say it has changed the mindset of a team that was just playing out the season to one of absolute excitement on getting a "do-over". This is still conjecture however under the NCS eligibility rules how could they exclude say a 4-6 team that is 3-1 in league and accept a 5-5 team that is 3-4 in league for example. It seems that it is either accept all eligible teams or just leave it the same. Thanks again for doing what you do.

Thanks for the tipoff DIV Fan. Just went and read that letter and I get the impression they aren't saying that for sure they will take all eligible teams, but that Division IV is eligible to expand to 16.

Since it was originally scheduled as an 8-team bracket, going up to 16 adds an extra week to the season. And the original release about the expansion said they would expand any bracket where it wouldn't add on to the season. So I think that letter is saying that they will expand Division IV, but won't expand Division V.

Jimmy,
Love your work It's great to see the small school coverage. The NCS website has posted a letter as of 11/3/09 that ALL D IV teams (up to a max of 16) who are eligible according to the guidelines, and who then apply by Nov 14th at 10PM, WILL make the playoffs. McKinleyville is a lock because they are 2-0 in league and at worst would finish 2-2 and even if Willits loses to Ft. Bragg & Middletown and finishes 3-7 they are 2-0 in league and are therefore a lock to make the playoffs if they apply. Justin Sienna is a lock with one win in final 2 games, Kelseyville is eligible at 4-6 if they beat Ft. Bragg the last game of the season (2-2 in league). St. Helena is in if they win their last two and Clear Lake is in if they win either of their last 2. Therefore it is possible that 16 of the 17 teams in NCS DIV could be in the postseason. (Swett being the only team left out) However it is likely that 14 will be eligible when the dust settles and #1 and #2 seeds would get 1st round bye's. I for one appreciate the expansion of DIV to all eligible teams because it gives the small public schools a chance to play in a division where 7 of the 17 teams are private, not to mention Ferndale. All 7 of which are usually the front runners to make the playoffs (7 of your top 11 seeds) And it will make for some really entertaining first and second round games between teams that otherwise would likely NEVER play each other. And helps us swallow the bitter pill of being the only division without a state playoff game!!

Good call Big Dog, I missed that one. Middletown is definitely ahead of Cloverdale.

Btw...I missed answering Chieftain Forever back up at No. 9. I would have a hard time imagining an undefeated Ferndale team drop all the way to No. 3 knowing how much the NCS values undefeated teams. So even if St. Mary's were to sneak up and grab the top seed, Salesian probably would still be No. 3.

Jimmy D - How can you say you could easily flip flop Middletown and Cloverdale? Middletown beat them head to head at Cloverdale.

Not only does Salesian have a great Athletic Department, but their school spirit is fantastic. The support for their teams by students, parents and alum is impressive. Great school and great community.
