Galvin commits to Washington State

The East Bay’s top running back has a new home.
Berkeley High star Rickey Galvin, the area’s leading rusher with 1,773 yards and 23 touchdowns, gave his oral commitment Wednesday to play football for Washington State.
“I’m real excited,” Galvin said. “I have an opportunity to play in the Pac-10, which is the league I wanted to play in.”
Galvin visited the Pullman, Wash., campus in early October and the Cougars have been at the top of his list for quite some time. He becomes the fifth East Bay player to commit to Washington State, joining Encinal’s Tyrone Duckett, Oakland’s Damante Horton and Pittsburg’s Tracy Clark and Robert Jiles.
“I think that’s the best thing about it, being up there with people you know from your area,” Galvin said.
Recruiters had been relatively quiet pursuing Galvin, mainly due to his 5-foot-8, 172-pound frame. But a 40-time of 4.5 seconds and impressive numbers in the weight room — in addition to his lofty statistics — finally won scouts over.
“To me, the numbers speak for themselves,” Berkeley coach Alonzo Carter said. “He’s one of the best, if not the best running back in the state of California. His work ethic is second to none. A lot of schools are going to regret not taking him.”
Galvin also had official offers from San Diego State and Utah State. The former star of the Berkeley Cougars youth football program also was recruited by hometown Cal, but did not receive an offer.
“They have Shane Vereen already in a similar mold,” Carter said of Cal. “They just weren’t looking for a smaller back.”

Good for Galvin. WSU swooping in on all the East Bay stars, nice! Those guys will have a good time up there together.

Congrats to Galvin!! I love to hear this. D’s uncle went to Wazzu back in the mid 90′s, after being the City player of the year. He enjoyed his time at Pullman and has not come home. He now lives and works lives in Seattle. Good stuff.
We all tout our individual stars, but the truth is we are in an area known for talented young players. We should all take joy in this young man having the opportunity to continue his career and most importantly receive a quality education. It is truly thrilling.
Run Rickey, Run!
Go Panthers!

Good stuff Panther Fan. We should all help and encourage players here to find other football opportunitites, including NAIA, etc. Even if they have to travel to a relatively unknown school, there are grants to be had, and positions to be filled that complement a decent education nicely. Services like http://www.ncsasports.org are relatively cheap, maybe others (I have no stake in that but know about it), like $700-1400 but well worth it to find a place to play and maybe even get it paid for. You HAVE to be proactive to locate a spot – don’t wait for somebody to find you.

GREAT NEWS!

Man O’War – Thanks you. Great info. You are absolutely right. Even the top players around here will most likely not go pro. Playing at the next level is really only about getting a college degree.
Go Panthers!

I want to chime in on the Keenan Coogler point. I have posted about Keenan many times. This young man is a D1 football player. More importantly, he is a special young man. He is a joy to be around. He comes from a great family. His older brother starred at SM and went on to play at Sac St. I am looking forward to reading about Keenan signing soon as well
Go Panthers!

Congrats to Galvin. Wash. St is getting a good player. You deserve anything else you get this year. Keep lighting it up on the fied and classroom. What’s up with Washington St. and the Bay Area? Haha

Coogler is a fine player as well but a little short for LB. I’m sure that someone will take him because the young man is a beast!
November 5th, 2009 at 11:16 am
Talks were that he would project out as a safety at the next level. But there were some scouts that liked him at LB. Hence the reason for him staying there. Not sure where Aaron Norton-Buford projects. I’ve heard 3-4 LB as well as 4-3 DE because of the size of his frame. I think he can hold another 40 to 50 lbs on it and not lose his initial burst.

I totally agree PantherFan. Being around all 3 of the Coogler boys over the years I believe Kennan shows the most upside. He shows both the drive and determination to succeed not only in football but in life. I think Ira has done a great job with them.
November 5th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
Coogler should be hearing something from Washington
November 5th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
Wannankow – They are a special family. Ira is a great man and has done a tremendous job with all the boys. Keenan lights up a rooms with his smile, sense of humor and that raspy voice. Of course we all know he lights up RB’s with his strength and playmaking!! LOL I will be watching closely to see what happens.
Guru- I hope you are right. Washington or Wash. State?
Go Panthers!
