Berkeley will beat Carondelet at the MLK! I’m calling it now.

  • Stephanie Hammon

It’s too bad Berkeley and O’Dowd won’t play this year, that’d be a fun game. I think O’Dowd may have a little too much depth for the Jackets, though. What do you think, ECulb?

  • Panther Fan

My Panthers are loaded this year. Coach Fripp has settled into his position as one of the areas top coaches and programs. Keep it movin’ Nate!

    D. Mauldin is one of the areas top players. I’ve watched D since she was a freshman and she her game has evolved every year.

The Panther Nation is pulling hard for a State run this year ladies! Work hard and play together and you can get it!

    Go Panthers!

Interesting question and I’m struggling to find the answer for it because I dont want to sound smug or anything, but I dont think the Dragons have that much more depth than Berkeley. Yeah Berkeley lost big time in those two games at the WCJ but think about it one Potter’s House has at least 4 legit D1 guards and they press you to death. When Boyd was in the game in the 1st half she was able to break the press and get the team in the offense on her own, when she was out the other guards couldnt do that but that brings up this statement no other team in this area has guard play like PHC, and Hanford is just another type of monster. I didnt see that game but having seen that team play enough I know this they play together year round and they excecute, shoot the three, hustle and few other teams. It didnt help that both Culberson and Boyd fouled out.

So that being said I guess O’Dowd’s depth would be very benefical (sounds like a retract from earlier! LOL) but the X-Factor would simply be this, if Culberson and/or Boyd stay out of early fould trouble the game will go down to the wire. You would have Boyd, Quinn, Davis vs. Lyles, the Bostick’s, and Laurel they would cancel each other out IMO, then you go Mayberry/Culberson another cancel out. Heck all I know is that it would be a good game.

One thing I will say is this I think the O’Dowd Kool-Aid is flowing but dont be decieved by there 3rd place finish at the WCJ they where handed a free pass to the semi’s (Washington LA, and Deer Valley) that’s the easiest route of any team there (Maybe Brea), but they have loss to a Sac team who I’m not ready to call overrated and a C-Let team I think the Jackets will beat. Do you know who they play in the MLK Shootout? They are about to start league and we know they will blow everyone out in the HAAL so they will go pretty much untested until the state playoffs again my opinion. I said a WHOLE lot I know whatdo you think?

  • Stephanie Hammon

I know, it is a tough one, that’s why I asked you 🙂

I saw O’Dowd in all four of their Jamboree games last week and somehow mananged to not see Berkeley at all, so I know much more about the Dragons than the Berkeley. I did see Berkeley in their second game of the season when they played Monte Vista, but it’s hard to judge them based on that (both teams looked kind of disjointed, clearly the second game of the year).

From what I know about Berkeley in general, I agree with you that Culberson and Mayberry will kind of cancel each other out, as well as Boyd/Lyles. How much depth does Berkeley have at guard? I think that’s where O’Dowd may have the edge. Ariell Bostick might be my new favorite player simply because she makes some plays and has moves that I totally wouldn’t expect from a 5-foot-2 freshman. She’s going to be an awesome PG for them after her sister graduates. The game would come down to the wire, for sure, but I’d give the edge to O’Dowd. If they play next year, I’d go with Berkeley since Lyles, Mayberry and Alexis Bostick will all be gone for O’Dowd and Culberson and Boyd would be back for Berk.

And just for the record, I 100 percent agree with you that O’Dowd had a cakewalk to the semifinals. That said, they did put up a better fight against Brea than Potter’s House or anyone else at the tournament for that matter and beating Carondelet is big. As far as I know O’Dowd isn’t playing at the MLK classic, at least not the one at Haas. I’ll try to find out for sure though. It’s too bad they won’t see anyone til Nor Cals — I like their tough December schedule, but now they’ll be winning by 30+ for two months straight and we’ll see if that hurts them come playoffs.

  • Jimmy Durkin

O’Dowd is playing St. Joseph of Santa Maria on MLK Day. The schedule I have doesn’t say where at, but I know last year played in an MLK event at Marin Catholic, so it might be up there. They played Sacred Heart Cathedral there last year.

Berkeley has Elisha Davis and Jasmine Quinn as conterparts to Boyd I think both win will be among the top players in the 2012 class both are as quick as the freshman and probably as good as any guard on O’Dowd outside of Lyles. And both are the top 3 point shooters on the team. Here is my theory I think a lot of teams who saw the PHC game left thinking they can press Berkeley now, if it where my team I would love for them to because as I said earlier no other team has guards like PHC in the state (maybe Poly). But where Berkeley would be lacking is if Culberson gets in early foul trouble and the Dragons begin to pound them on the boards and they have serious depth albeit young posts but you cant teach size. But alas it’s all wishful thinking.

BUt on to the C-Let game the thing with them is they will let teams back in the game, so even if Brekeley get down early they will let them back in.

  • Stephanie Hammon

Lyles vs. Boyd and Mayberry vs. Culberson would be fun to see, no doubt. Too bad it won’t happen. I’m hoping to be there for Berkeley vs. St. Mary’s Stockton in a couple weeks. Now there’s a team that can press!

  • E_CULB

Yep, it will be interesting. Ms. Hammon we got to get you to a game sooner.

  • Chris

    I can’t believe it.

Mission San Jose just thumped Logan 49-29.

  • Prep Fan

MSJ is a decent team, but not many saw them beating Logan by 20. I would look for a reversal of these 2 teams in next week’s rankings. Heritage knocked off Deer Valley this week, so I would think they would be moving up the list as well.

And St. Mary’s has got to feel lucky escaping from Piedmont with a win. I thought the Highlanders were going to win in regulation, but Cody Sims bailed out the Panthers at the end of the fourth and Mauldin had a couple clutch shots in OT. It looks like the BSAL race might be closer than expected…

  • Panther Fan

I am a huge Panther Fan (obviously) but I am also a big Piedmont fan. How? Simple – Brian Gardere. Besides being a very good coach, Brian has belped many young ladies out over the years who do not even play for him.

People need to understand, the Piedmont / SM games in girl’s hoops is a true rivalry game. The rivalry goes back to the days of the Paris’ twins against Shantrell Sneed, Christina Johnson, and Natty Fripp (Coach Fripp’s sister). Often the stronger team loses. When Casey Morris and Co. were running the floor for the Highlanders, SM got them 2 or 3 times. Now it appears that SM is stronger, but Piedmont will always give them everything they want.

I also would like to mention Andrea Chanier. We first saw Andrea when she was an 8th grader. 8th grade!! She played on our AAU team with all Jr.’s and Sr.’s. Some games during the summer, she was the best player on the court. We knew she would be a great player. I was not at the game last night, but from what my son told me Andrea was ballin! Not surprising to me. I am glad to hear of Andrea doing so well. She is a legit D1 talent.

So, Stephanie, I agree the BSAL will be as tight as Piedmont does in their other games. They can’t just get up for the Panthers. If they run the table in league, it will come down to one game (as it often does with these two teams). I will not miss the next one!

Go Panthers! and Go Girls’ Hoops!

  • Stephanie Hammon

Panther Fan, I agree with you about Chenier. I’d heard a lot about Allen (and she was very good), but Chenier was probably the biggest reason Piedmont was able to push SM to the very end.

  • Chris

All we have to do to clinch a spot now is NOT lose to Irvington LOL

  • E_CULB

I would like to see Chenier play, but if Allen hadnt transfered in the game probably would not have been as close, she was the differance maker I know and I wasnt at the game. She would be a household name had she not blew out her knees, as an 8th grader I’m willing to say she was right up there with Boyd,Payne, and Culberson.

  • Stephanie Hammon

Allen had half of Piedmont’s points, so yes she played a giant role. Chenier made some big plays down the stretch though and had 16 points, so what I guess I meant is that if Piedmont didn’t have Allen AND Chenier they probably wouldn’t have taken SM down to the wire. They were both difference makers.

  • E_CULB

I understood what you meant i dont want you to think i was challenging you. I’m just really happy for Saiedah she has battled back from a long way.

  • E_CULB

Hey Jimmy or whoever can help the Jackets had a player sign a NLI for basketball and no mention in the paper. Does the coach need to call that in or what?
