I just heard a pin drop… Why so quite?

The Bishop O’Dowd girls team is having success with a freshman playing center: she averages around 8-10 points per game and plays well in the defensive scheme. How many ranked teams, girls or boys, have a freshman starting at center?

@BallHawk
There have been many more on the girls side than the boys. But last year McClymonds had a freshman starting at center, I know for sure Chairese Culberson started at center for Berkeley High when she was a fresh, and went to the title game. Girls can step in and play right away more easier than the boys (it has been my experience). By all accounts Waters is good, but when did they make the switch? At the WCJ #44 started.

Oh and for the record I callled the Berkeley victory two weeks ago!

E_CULB, Thanks for the comments. I saw one game and someone commented about a freshman center, so I assumed she started most games. You would know better than me.
Mostly, I was just trying to get the chatter going on girls hoops, assuming there were interesting observations and rumors out there, ala “Carondelet recruiting”…but your call trumped that one.

Waters is #44, the freshman center for O’Dowd. It’s not super rare to see a starting freshman center, but I’m pretty sure she’s the only one this year on a ranked girls team. Not sure about the boys. Actually, she might be the only freshman starting at any position for any of the top 10 ranked girls teams, except Monte Vista (I think they have a freshman forward – maybe she’s first of the bench though?)
As for Waters, she’s definitely a good player. I was most impressed with her when O’Dowd played Carondelet at the WCJ. She tied for the team-high in points, blocked a couple shots and had a big day on the boards, which was particularly important because O’Dowd’s leading rebounder (Mayberry) spent a lot of time on the bench in foul trouble.

Actually I take that back – Rachael Howard is a freshman starter for Berkeley, right?

Yes, Waters is #44 and she has been starting for BOD all season. Very good player.
Looking at the top 10: Carondelet has no freshmen on the team at all this year, but last year Hannah Huffman started at guard and the year before that Erica Payne started as a freshmen. Dougherty Valley had a bunch of freshmen starting last year, but they were a new school in their first year of varsity and had no juniors or seniors. I think both Stephanie Golden for Miramonte and Courtney Hamilton for Northgate were reserves as frosh, but both got a lot of PT.

That’s what I get for listening to other people they told me another name for #44, it was a familiar one to that played last season but if that’s her I watched a tape of the first Carondelet game and she was BALLIN she will be a player in years to come. And Steph your right Rachel has started a majority of the games this season.

Oh and BallHawk I feel you thanks for trying to get the chatter going it is much needed.

Eculb, yes you did call the Berkeley victory2 weeks ago. Kudos.
Now, does Berkeley have a chance against St. Mary’s of Stockton on Saturday night? I would love to see it, but that team is on a whole ‘nother level.

You know I feel like they really do have a shot, wont be easy but I think if Boyd and Culberson stay out of foul trouble and show up to play the game will be interesting. It is like I said after the game in which they played Potter’s House Christian they wont see another team that will press them like PHS did. Plus PHS had 4 D-1 guards who pressed teams into submission. I hear SMS likes to press, and that will be the tell tell sign of how the game will go. If they effectivley force Berkeley into a lot of turnovers then it will be a long day, if the Jackets handle the press well then it will be interesting. If they take it to the 4th down by less than 10 then it’s anybody’s ball game. You heard it hear first!
