Alonzo Carter resigns at Berkeley High, takes over at CCC

Alonzo Carter is graduating from high school.
The Berkeley High football coach and former McClymonds coach officially resigned his post with the Yellowjackets on Wednesday and said he has accepted a position as head coach and physical education instructor at Contra Costa College.
“It’s just a great opportunity to coach and teach at the next level,” said Carter, who went 25-8-1 in three seasons at Berkeley in which the Yellowjackets won three Alameda Contra Costa Athletic League titles.
Carter’s career record is 82-42-3 in 11 seasons as a head coach, including eight years at McClymonds in which his teams won four Oakland Athletic League titles and three Silver Bowl championships.
Carter met with Berkeley’s incoming seniors last week to inform them of his decision, then met with the entire team Tuesday and the players’ parents Wednesday.
“It was hard because I built what we were establishing,” Carter said. “My seniors-to-be were my ninth graders when I started (at Berkeley). I’m the only coach they had.
“Surprisingly the kids were very happy for me. They knew coaching at the next level was something I (wanted).”

Congrats to Coach Zo Carter, all the hard work has paid off and this is only the beginning! I wish him the best and look forward to working with him in the near future!

you heard it here first…
the Rumor is that Brian Hamilton, the Concord high head coach, is the frontrunner to land the Berkeley job
He has been trying to move up to a bigger school from CHS for the last couple years. Should be interesting. As a football players mom, i am happy to see him go.
Go Minutemen!

I have heard the rumor of Hamilton as a candidate. I’ve also heard a few other possibilities. The job will be posted Feb. 1, so we’ll see what happens after that.

like Bhigh fans knew, Zo is getting a chance to help even more kids go to college and continue to play football. he’s one of the best coaches in the bay area and likely the best in west county at it. the way he does it is remarkable, and we all should be lucky to have had or seen a coach like him do what a great job he does. Coach Zo keep inspiring the young people and doing what you do best!! The community needs more people like him.

Carter is an average coach at best… His knowledge of football isnt very good. Seriously… he is an AMAZING recruiter. i give him that. That is 75% of the battle at the next level. I think within the next couple years he will get some amazing athletes through CC… but unless he can get some great coaches on his staff to develop the talent and run effective schemes its all for nothing. Great recruiter, great guy, just very limited in terms of football knowledge…
his schemes done win games, his talent does
Good luck to him at CC, i think his recruiting can turn them around

Suggestions for new coach. The Jets Joe Tenario. His record speaks for itself. If Berkeley were smart, they should jump at this asap. Knowledge of the game, great scheme, good communicater and someone the kids can relate to, not to mention a winning percentage second only to Bob Ladoucer the last 4 years. People are still going to talk about the egg Encinal layed against Marin Catholic, but things happen. That’s why they play the game. For 2 years in a row in the championship is nothing to hate on. Oh I forgot to mention, he started out in the ACCAL. Would’nt Alameda High love to see that? Anyway, that’s just one mans opinion but a good one.
January 21st, 2010 at 1:24 pm
Congrats Coach Zo, you will definately be missed in the ACCAL… best of luck at C.C.C.

Truth, if you going to wish Zo good luck, then why add your negative comment regarding his coaching. Zo is a big man and can very well brush off those who think he cannot coach but I see these kinds of posts whenever he does something positive. Excuse me, but I believe charisma, motivational skills, peeple skills go a long way in the develpoment of young men as football players and gets you better jobs in coaching. I have a son who has gone on to college to a PAC-10 school for football. One reason I did not have Zo coach him in high school is idiots like you who claim he recruits. Even though my son did not play for him, he made sure the college recruiters still knew who was. How many coaches in this area have that type of rapor with collge recruiters other than Zo? I guess we forget about the best high school in our area De La Salle(Top tier program in the nation). Do they recuit or do parents and kids want to travel from as far out as 50 mile radius to be part of a good program. Kids and parents have been jumping through hoops for the past 25 years to go the “powerhouse program” This stuff goes on everywhere, every year. I guess its okay if you can fork out 14k or 15k to go to De La Salle though. Most people think De La Salle’s head coach is a great coach. Is it his scheme, or is it the discipline, hard work, and buy-in to his system? They have been ruuning the same veer option offense since I was in high school. My high school team actully beat De La Salle in ’84′ with a system which was even more acient than theirs. We won because we executed and had good players. I give Zo all the props in the world for all the kids he has helped. Many of the kids who did not play for him appreciate him as well. He has helped many of them also.
Congrats Zo

Congrats Coach, there is a kid at Cal high you might want to talk to,to help jump start your new career.
January 21st, 2010 at 5:31 pm
Carter did a good job at BHS with what he had to work with. New coach, tip, get a couple of ex- De La Salle guys from the coaching ranks. They’ll have you up and running in no time.
If that’s the case, get ready for some fall-out, the remaining who stay will surprise you, it’s a team game.
With 4000 students and almost 2000 males BHS should field a powerful team. Sometimes big schools are expected to win, but that’s not the case. Furthermore, BHS needs up pick up their pre-league schedule- do like Pittsburg- schedule heavy up front and build for league, you’ll be better for the playoffs.

I’m reading these blogs, and I can’t believe some of the stuff I’m hearing. People hating on Zo’s coaching abilities. People already talking about the new head coach. The whole conversation should be on a man that didn’t come from a humble up-bringing. That changed his life in the midst of chaos and violence. Who became a man with hammer and decided to give a little of his knowledge and wisdom back to his community.U see that’s what the african king and prince was about. Raising a villiage and passing the knowledge on to the next generation. If we all took the time to do this, just imagine what kind of world would we live in. Black or White. So haters learn and and compasiontes keeping on trucking. We love u Zo ! td video man.

Alzonzo did a great service turning Berkely around, back into a formidable foe, tough, hard-nosed team. He will be equally successful at CCCC, given enough time to do so, and they will give him all the time he needs. Within 5 years or less, CCCC will be a force.
Congratulations Coach Carter.
Now, who will replace the vaunted Coach Carter and lead the Yellowjackets to even greater heights?
This will be an excellent horse race, down to the wire.
Let the games begin!

Murdoc, our best win was definately against Pinole Valley. We played our best overall game that night and our defense held a potentially high octane offense in check.
