Alonzo Carter is graduating from high school.
The Berkeley High football coach and former McClymonds coach officially resigned his post with the Yellowjackets on Wednesday and said he has accepted a position as head coach and physical education instructor at Contra Costa College.
“It’s just a great opportunity to coach and teach at the next level,” said Carter, who went 25-8-1 in three seasons at Berkeley in which the Yellowjackets won three Alameda Contra Costa Athletic League titles.
Carter’s career record is 82-42-3 in 11 seasons as a head coach, including eight years at McClymonds in which his teams won four Oakland Athletic League titles and three Silver Bowl championships.
Carter met with Berkeley’s incoming seniors last week to inform them of his decision, then met with the entire team Tuesday and the players’ parents Wednesday.
“It was hard because I built what we were establishing,” Carter said. “My seniors-to-be were my ninth graders when I started (at Berkeley). I’m the only coach they had.
“Surprisingly the kids were very happy for me. They knew coaching at the next level was something I (wanted).”

The gyms at both Oakland High and Oakland Tech have bad roof leaks and have caused the postponement of today’s boys and girls basketball games between the Wildcats and Bulldogs. Make up dates are still to be determined.

For those who don’t know, Brown is a former Salesian star who transferred in the summer to Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nev., and then recently returned home to Oakland and enrolled at Oakland High, playing in two games before being forced to sit out the past two.
