Pay back time for Coach Sanchez. Count it as a loss DLS.
February 2nd, 2010 at 8:20 am
I hope that Gorman crushes DLS!
February 2nd, 2010 at 8:42 am
pay back time. Im not feeling you man.
February 2nd, 2010 at 10:07 am
Wow, Calfan what happened to your program getting it done without Sanchez, the monsters from the youth program and the dynamic young DLS coach?
February 2nd, 2010 at 10:21 am
This is coach Sanchez’ way of taking his team to the next level. Kudos to DLS for agreeing to play. With a sophomore starting QB, the coach is gearing up to gain national attention in 2010, and then crack the top 25 in 2011 and top 10 in 2012. This will stoke the recruiting machine and enable him to build a dynasty in the desert.
I hope that DLS and BG renew the contract, and that Comcast steps up to broadcast the game.
February 2nd, 2010 at 10:32 am
Sanchez is using BG as a stepping stone to college. The DLS game can put him on the map.
February 2nd, 2010 at 10:52 am
no doubt kiss the ring…we are not the same program at all without Sanchez
February 2nd, 2010 at 3:03 pm
de la salle never backs down from any challenge that bishop gorman game is gonna be a good game.
February 2nd, 2010 at 6:42 pm
it’s going to be a good game. Gorman had eight D-1 recruits this year. Next year they have a young team as pointed out at the qb spot and as well at the rb spot. The qb started this year as a freshman. They do return a stud DL who already holds offers from Pac-10 powers as well as SEC powers. I expect this team to be like any other Sanchez coached team. They will pound the rock so this game will be heavily determined by the work done in the trenches. This is one of DLS’ big question marks heading into the next season along with the rb position. Fortunately returning a guy like dylan wynn gives a definite leader for the lines something that was sorely missed in the 08 season when the lines struggled all season. Don’t forget though that DLS is moving up one of the more talented JV teams they have had in awhile. They also will have one of the strongest groups of linebackers in quite sometime led by Blake Renaud, along with junior Michael Barton who started as a soph this year and soph Michael Hutchings (blue chip potential). Against Gorman the front seven will play a huge role. Offensively there a quite a few linemen for DLS who got plenty of PT last year due to the flu, injuries, and blowouts. I am not as concerned about this group. The biggest hole to take care of on the line will be at the center position where Mac Hess was very, very good. But again returning Wynn at guard will help. For the rb’s Corey Dunne received a fair amount of PT last year and is good but I’m not sure he is quite good enough to be the lead back. Hits the hole hard and is solid though. There will be a lot of guys trying to earn the starting spot and we may even see a three or four man rotation as they have a lot of rb’s. It is all about who will step up during the off-season. My pick is actually Mister Marshall-Cotton who started this year as a soph at safety on varsity. He played rb on the frosh team and certainly has the speed to do it.
In regards to Cal High, I think they will be good in a few years. Remember most of these guys grew up in Sanchez’s system and Billeci (sp?) changed it. Who knows how Coach Sanchez would have done with this year’s team? Anyways give them a few years. Believe the frosh had a solid team this year.
February 2nd, 2010 at 10:58 pm
Hard to say what BG will look like this coming year….This past season’s team looked like a D2 College team when they manhandled Reed H.S. of Sparks, NV. (Reno), in the NV State Semi-finals.
February 2nd, 2010 at 11:23 pm
Does Bishop Gorman play anybody? A lot of yap from those in Nevada…be careful what you wish for.
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:19 am
Cal’s freshman team was pretty good, as was San Ramon and Foothill as well.
February 3rd, 2010 at 11:47 am
well i know BG..
they are very physical and aggressive team… huge linemen .. Bg looked like a college team last year i hop they can be solid in 2011
DLS better be ready for this because BG is about to fired up
February 3rd, 2010 at 4:53 pm
Somehow I’m guessing DLS will be ready for BG- just a hunch.
February 3rd, 2010 at 5:18 pm
This should be a great game, and DLS gets to host round 1. On the face of it (without getting into personnel issues), one would think the Open Champions for a state the size of California would destroy the best a state the size of Nevada has to offer. Especially with such a storied program as DLS has been the last 25 years or so.
However, BG has some studs and Coach Sanchez has about as much knowledge about DLS as anyone, having grown up in this area, coached against them for a couple of years while at Cal HS having his brother still on the staff at Cal who played them this season. I would agree with Junior that Coach Lad and the DLS juggernaut will do their homework on BG over the next 7 months and will be prepared for battle as always.
I would give the early edge to DLS, number one because they are DLS, and also playing at home should be a big advantage for them. I hope I am able to see this one.
February 3rd, 2010 at 5:59 pm
DLS has a strong schedule, they have a chance early for the open division game if they can beat St. Mary’s HS from Stockton. St. Mary’s is bringing up one of the strongest JV teams it has ever had, not to mention another talented QB, and a lot of speedy backs and recievers.
February 3rd, 2010 at 7:51 pm
DLS will throw more next year.
March 12th, 2010 at 3:26 pm
if bg beats dls then let them play Don Bosco Prep.. i saw that team destroy dls and two other teams in n.j. while visiting. they swarm, hit very hard and are the most reletless bunch i have ever seenand are very nasty also. fair, but nasty………
March 13th, 2010 at 12:40 am
you bishop gorman people keep running your mouths…we’ll see what happens.
March 17th, 2010 at 10:11 am
de la salle is a well balanced team, good coach who’s a bit arrogant but i hope they walk all over bg. was very happy they beat an overrated Crenshaw.
March 17th, 2010 at 12:23 pm
Overated?? I’m not saying Crenshaw would have won but if the Black Mamba didn’t get hurt DLS defense would not have stopped him. He would have scored 2 more TDs maybe DLS wins in OT
March 17th, 2010 at 4:52 pm
Crenshaws possesions 3, 4 and 5 w/ Thomas= no scores.
DLS defensive front started taking over the game after those first two series. Mamba or no Mamba- DLS wins that game in regulation because they controlled the LOS on both sides after the slow start.
Crenshaw was not over rated. They were the second best team I saw that weekend- they would have beat Servite, Rocklin or Oceanside.
March 17th, 2010 at 6:44 pm
Wow, I guess thats your opinion. Mamba was from what I saw maybe the 2nd best RB in this area of the country. He played defense too. You’re telling me that if the 2nd or 3rd best RB in this area doesn’t play it makes no difference? He made that DLS defense look real ordinary. Yeah they looked pretty dominant when he was out. Its like saying DLS would have been the exact same team without Terron Ward. I don’t think so.
March 17th, 2010 at 7:55 pm
I never said his presence wouldnt make any difference- I said with or without mamba- DLS wins the game. DLS controlled the LOS after Crenshaw’s first two series. watch possession #3-5 for Crenshaw (with mamba still in the game)
March 18th, 2010 at 8:34 am
The Crenshaw team was by far the most talent-laden team on the field throughout the weekend. No other team came close to the level of talent and potential collegiate talent on one squad.
The Black Mamba is riding in the very elite RB category, top 5 on the west coast easily.
The first TD he scored, the entire DLS defense was seemingly in slow motion. No disrespect intended.
But, when that kid got hurt, Crenshaw had to revert to another game plan, more reliant on the pass, and their QB was very good too, just not enough to carry them to victory vs. the best high school football program in the west.
DLS victory that night vs. Crenshaw was a combination of poise, experience, grit, teamwork, athletic ability, and great adjustments by the coaches.
DLS was the better team that night, but if the Black Mamba stays in the game, it would have been different.
If DLS and Crenshaw were to play 10 games against each other, DLS wins 6 or 7 times, and Crenshaw takes 3 out of 10, maybe even a fourth.
DLS deserved the win that night.
March 18th, 2010 at 10:17 am
KillerD I would agree with that. I never said they would have won but it wold have been a lot closer & the end result could have been different. I think they win 3 games out 10 max maybe 2. Their D coordinator is too good. That same plan couldn’t work well enough for 3 wins to get 3 or 4 they would have to come with different innovatove things. They ran a Basic Smash mouth game plan nothing too sophisicated & thats why they’re good let those good athletes maximize their tallent.
March 18th, 2010 at 12:41 pm
the times i saw don bosco prep play i was very impressed. i mean these are wild, fast, hard, hard hitters and very intense, nasty players…. fair, but not friendly, very intense. they would have DESTROYED crenshaw. they appeared very disiplined with no trash talking nor mambos in the endzone. their fans are real good with no cheap or personal attacks while cheering…
March 18th, 2010 at 2:32 pm
There are some very good head coaching jobs open that have apparently gone underground, and no names have surfaced as leading candidates.
Livermore
Berkeley

Among others still vacant.
Is nobody interested in them?
March 18th, 2010 at 3:17 pm
Berkely
Pernon or Barnes
Antioch is filled
Mt D
Young asst…Dudney??? or a teacher on campus who has been out of the game for awhile
Livermore
No word yet but if they opt out of the EBAL and drop to D2 it could be an OK spot
BOD
Turner or Hamilton or an EBAL asst
March 18th, 2010 at 3:47 pm
KIss The Ring, thanks and my replies in parenthesis.
Berkely
Pernon or Barnes
(When did it get down to Two?)
Antioch is filled
(Whom did the Panthers hire?)
Mt D
Young asst…Dudney??? or a teacher on campus who has been out of the game for awhile
(This is news is this done deal?)
Livermore
No word yet but if they opt out of the EBAL and drop to D2 it could be an OK spot
(Can Livermore opt out of EBAL for Football only, just like Salesian opts out of the BSAL for football only?)
BOD
Turner or Hamilton or an EBAL asst
(Turner from YV, hmm. What EBAL assistants are in for it?)
March 19th, 2010 at 8:38 am
The names we have heard for the jobs still open:
Arroyo: Ron Thompson and a Moreau Coordinator, and one OAL coordinator
Berkeley: Barnes, Perenon, Kravitz, Hamilton and two OAL head coaches, and one college assistant
ODowd: Hamilton, Turner and a bay area college assistant, and Kravtiz formerly of San Ramon
Livermore: No word yet
March 19th, 2010 at 8:41 am
Historically,Nevada h.s. football is not highly thought of and as warrior said, “dls never backs down”. Crenshaws’ schedule was not the best and when they played dls they really did not compete. had they played that team in jersey they would have been destroyed. let’s see how crenshaw is next year?? b.m. is fast, but could never take serious pounding at a higher level imho. he weighs about 160 lbs and is speed, not power. example, sam gibson,of prattville h.s. in alabama,is same height and weighs over 200 lbs, don bosco busted him up and won 35-24.in ala. prattville would beat up crenshaw. i’ve seen football all over and crenshaw is Not big time. there are 4-5 h.s. in n.j. that walk all over them and that’s not a power state except for 7-8 teams. i say and hope dls walks all over b.g. go see don bosco prep play st peters prep at giants in 2009. watch coach toal for don bosco in his famous speech on you tube, you won’t forget it…”your patron saint was a tough guy”…..
March 19th, 2010 at 1:43 pm
Paul Perenon has put in for the Arroyo job. Their interview process has started.
March 19th, 2010 at 5:51 pm
We DO NOT want a coach who has issues with African- Americans,(Perenon) thats one of the reasons why he got fired at O’Dowd. Last time I looked at Berkeley’s roster 98% AA. Letters have been flowing into the vp office, No to Perenon, Yes to Sims at St, Liz and Barnes at the Castle. Rickey is Running Track,so Run Rickey Run! Go Jackets.
March 19th, 2010 at 6:01 pm
Word amongst coaching circles regarding the ODowd job is Longero at Las Lomas, Turner YV, a Cal high assistant, the coach who organizes the reborn all-star game, and another high profile coach who is un-named have all interviewed.
Berkeley: Sims at St. Liz is an intriguing choice and so is Barnes.
Arroyo and Perenon…interesting bit
March 19th, 2010 at 7:21 pm
this blog was about dls and bishop gorman?? posts 33,34 and 35 are not relevant to this subject matter. why are you so intrusive.. don’t try and bum rush this topic..step off.
March 19th, 2010 at 11:05 pm
This blog should be open to discussion of all off-season football match-ups as well as coaching changes. Back to posts #1-7, coaching change was the topic of the hour.
2 or 3 years from now we will be discussing the public and non-public playoffs, as is happening all over the country…
March 20th, 2010 at 8:53 am
dls will win,but better be ready as bg will be real fired up…. dls will need a strong resolve and committment.
March 20th, 2010 at 2:45 pm
Sticky news about the Dragons head football coaching search has muddied up the process.
One of our Coordinators in the HAAL interviewed for the job but there is a team parent on the selectioin panel whose son plays for Odowd and this parent also wants to be the new Defensive Coordinator for the Dragons for the new coach that is hired.
This was not made blatantly open to our coach, but it was referred to several times.
If this is true, it will cause the search panel to completely mess up the whole thing and those kids will suffer for it at Odowd unfortunately.
March 20th, 2010 at 5:57 pm
To: HAAL Coach
If your feedback is to be confirmed, could this be why it’s taking the ODowd administration a bit longer than expected to choose Paul Perenon’s successor?
This is an interesting and unexpected twist in the saga
March 21st, 2010 at 10:16 am
now that most schedules are set…what are some of the big non conference east bay games we have this year?
March 21st, 2010 at 12:16 pm
i know some of you guys are ebal fans, and you guys dont care about dval football as much but..
my school yv has 2 pretty good nonleague games this season.
1.ygnacio valley vs alhambra, gonna be a pretty good game.
2.ygnacio valley vs casa grande another good game.
March 21st, 2010 at 12:36 pm
Here is some news about a few yet-to-be-filled head football coaching jobs and remarks about some filled.
Berkeley: Barnes and the St. Liz coach are front-runners but Coach Perenon’s resume is becoming tougher and tuffer for the yellowjacket administration to overlook.
However, how much is true or not about the reasons for the divorce between Perenon and the Dragons might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back either way for Berkeley? Has Perenon’s loud split helped him, or should he have taken his lumps quietly, and then would have had much better chance of landing a great job like Berkeley?
Bishop ODowd: The job has been Offered to an out-of-state College Coach that apparently has some local tie. How strong those local ties are or, or are not is unclear? How much money the Dragons offered or what type of job is attached to the football job is vague. But, the job has been offered to this College Coach from out of state, that is a fact.
Arroyo: Thompson and Perenon and more than 20 coaches have applied for the job. This is a much better job that some people believe. Arroyo is dropping down to division II and will be a strong bet to earn a playoff berth within two years.
Livermore: the Cowboys scored big by grabbing the energetic and fiery Coach Haubner from Foothill. By all accounts a detailed and passionate coach. His Navy style Triple Option is the right call to rebuild the once great Cowboys into a football program of respectability and a playoff contender within three years.
March 21st, 2010 at 5:51 pm
Killer D-
Sounds like earthquake forecasting… A 5.0 hits Livermore (Congrats Coach Haubner), maybe a 5.5 centered in San Lorenzo this week. Then the Hayward acts up sometime soon (after a foreshock two months to the day snaked up from Berk. to San Pablo- Congrats Carter’s Comets)….did I miss any faultlines? Foreshocks, aftershocks, big one? So hard to figure out.
March 24th, 2010 at 9:33 am
Hot Jobs info as the news leaks out from what we have heard as of this morning:
Berkeley: Barnes is looking good to the Yellow Jackets, and does not carry much baggage. Several Jacket assistant coaches have been interviewing for assistant jobs elsewhere with resumes in tow, and Barnes will be able to keep many of the BH staff holdovers too, plus bring a handful of his own guys. At this point, Barnes is front runner
Bishop ODowd: Only the Dragons know the happenings behind the Black & Gold curtain, but several top candidates (College Asst., current DFAL head coach and a Juco asst) have been told they are on the Odowd “short list” without being committed to. The longer this job takes to fill, it pushes some candidates away. Who is calling the shots for the Dragons? This job should have been filled by now.
Arroyo: Perenon would love to rebuild the Arroyo football program, and haunt the Dragons in the HAAL annually with stunning upsets home and away. Will he get the chance to lead them to victory? Arroyo could do much worse, but again, who knows their thoughts?
*Another east bay head coach is rumored to have told his staff that likely he will be stepping away soon. If those rumors are true, it will open up another outstanding coaching job unexpectedly.
March 24th, 2010 at 10:42 am
Has Berkeley High started their interview process? If so any rumors on how they went?
March 24th, 2010 at 2:11 pm
barnes has to be the favorite done a nice job at castlemont plus he is alumni! he will have to step up his schemes but my vote is for him.
March 24th, 2010 at 2:14 pm
whats up with peronon?
March 25th, 2010 at 10:48 am
I am sending this letter to inform you that I would like to resign as a potential candidate for the Head Coach vacancy at Berkeley High School due to the extended time that it took for someone to correspond with me about the ongoing hiring process. I took great pride in applying for this vacancy as I am a Berkeley High School Alumni and it would have been an honor to work for such an established organization where I could have advanced in my coaching career, but unfortunately God has a different plan for me and I have decided to move toward a different path. I would like to extend my appreciation and thanks to all my BHS supporters, alumni, and staff for all their efforts in assisting me through this process. In acknowledging the great staff and athletic department you have, I am confident that Berkeley High School will pick a well deserving Head Coach to fill this vacancy. Best of luck to all your future endeavors and hiring a winning coaching staff. Just note that coaching is my life not a hobby so I pray that your next coach lives by the same motto.
Warm Regards,
James C. Barnes III
March 25th, 2010 at 11:13 am
Why Coach Barnes? Something upset you?
March 25th, 2010 at 11:14 am
Nevermind I see.
March 25th, 2010 at 11:57 am
Barnes withdrawal bodes well for Sims and Perenon for sure.
How is it that several of these coaching vacancies and the search process involved has gotten so filled with muck and mismanagement?
What a certain mess some of these potentially great jobs have turned out to be
March 25th, 2010 at 1:24 pm
Berkeley missed out on a good coach. I see what Barnes is saying and you can’t blame the guy. Its about to be april and there still is no coach in place. Bad management on B-High and other schools looking for coaches.
March 25th, 2010 at 1:38 pm
Wow. I hope that Barnes wasn’t B-High’s choice they seem too have really pissed him off to withdrawal.
March 25th, 2010 at 3:29 pm
it’s an interview process, grow up! its not like anyone that applied had a resume worth jumping up and down about or dictating the terms of the job or process. Maybe he withdrew to avoid the humiliation of not being selected.
March 25th, 2010 at 5:31 pm
if it’s true about a parent on the selection panel for BOD wanting to be the D-coordinator, that is sad and shows a great amount of ineptitude on the part of the BOD administration for allowing this. You have conflicting interests now with this person as he is no longer looking at the process objectively. He is looking at it as what is best for him, not what is best for the school and the players.
In regards to the time it is taking to fill jobs, i am guessing part of it is the economy and the uncertainty about high school sports and funding for them. Let’s face it a coach with a solid resume and who has been around for a long time commands a higher salary then a younger less experienced candidate. It’s a sad reality of the times we live in right now.
March 25th, 2010 at 7:28 pm
Renegades I totally agree. Nobodies coaching for less. Need to tell Berkeley High that. The salary they have posted is about what you would make as an assistant on most GOOD coaching staffs. Meaning everyone on the B-High staff is making way less then any assistant from other GOOD coaching staffs. School don’t want to win. No wonder they can’t win in the play-offs.
March 25th, 2010 at 8:20 pm
Consider the fact that new Head Coaches have to be ready to bring on/retain assistants and staff multiple levels, etc. et al.
…may take time to find that gemstone. First, have to find the rough version (yes, sometimes by a rockhound’s first day in the mine.) Sometimes in a vein that’s not been tapped in a while. Once found, looks questionable, maybe not so pretty on the outside, but the gem has to be cut… polished…. maybe even split p-r-e-c-i-s-e-l-y on the slightest of blemishes to form two… perfect… flawless halves worth ten times as much as the solo version.
March 25th, 2010 at 11:26 pm
Arroyo has hired it’s football coach. He was being shown around and introduced to people at the baseball and softball games today. I did not catch his name. It is not Perenon. He is commig from an OAL school
March 26th, 2010 at 12:12 am
i really love reading most of these post makes me laugh, so much of what people say is rumors and not facts, coach vince i feel u and u are hella funny, but understand why ur concerned, coach barnes too himself out due to he is the new arroyo coach and he has some talant of there a few sl crusaders that are senoirs. i just heard that the los lomas coach got the BOD job, the interviews for the b high job just started today march 25th, y so late not sure, but pernon and coach t from encinal did interview today. lets pray that they hire the right coach, sims from st liz would do great there.
March 26th, 2010 at 9:48 am
The Encinal coach pursuing the Berkeley job is interesting.
Why would the Las Lomas coach, Longero step down a level to tackle the BOD job in a weaker league other than San Leandro?
These types of moves keep the coaching circle interesting to many
March 26th, 2010 at 10:06 am
KIss the Ring Says????
Come on with this statement 1st of all you don’t no me!
2nd I waited for B-High to call me and they did but the timing was off I am young so I have more time then most to coach anywhere in the future my goal is the college level.
I had three offers on the table and in the coaching game as we all know humiliation comes with the job, and I have been their.
What I did was best for me and my family and staff.
“COACHING IS MY LIFE NOT A HOBBY”
March 26th, 2010 at 12:02 pm
“I had three offers on the table and in the coaching game as we all know humiliation comes with the job, and I have been their.”
I am sorry but i dont understand this section of your statement. No one would begrudge someone making the decision that is best for themselves but in doing so you pointed the finger at Berkleys lack of progress. If you ammend your statement to say after some consideration I don’t feel this opportunity is the right one for me.
As far as offers even the BEST coaches HAVE to interview so if you had 3 offers to apply for jobs fantastic but let’s not mislead people into believing that 3 schools had cleared the way for you without interview.
March 26th, 2010 at 12:23 pm
wow tenorio is going after the berkeley job?
March 26th, 2010 at 1:13 pm
Coach Tenorio is going after Berkeley? That would be very interesting if he got the job. Would he be able to get Berkeley to the place they should be? If he gets that job watch out Div.1 teams. I like the move for Barnes to be at Arroyo. He will take that team and make that squad into a playoff team. He will be the change that they needed at that school.
March 26th, 2010 at 1:56 pm
I agree on the Longero situation. Better athletes at O’dowd but not better work ethic. He had it prety good over there I don’t know why he would want to move on. Teacher on-campus too. I’ve heard he’s been wanting move on for sometime. He may struggle dealing with the intercity kid but I think he will still do a considerably better job then Perenon.
Barnes to Arroyo is that official? Interesting don’t know why he would want to move away from Castlemont he’s gonna have a pretty considerable drop in the athletes that went to Castle but much less headaches. Maybe he felt it was time for him to come to NCS.
If Coach Tenorio wants the B-High job it should be his I can’t see any other applicant being talked about touching his resume. But they may want an on-campus guy it which case Perenon should get the nod. I heard that Carter had to take an on-campus job as part of being the coach there.
March 26th, 2010 at 2:21 pm
Yes that’s true I interviewed for all the positions !!!!
“COACHING IS MY LIFE NOT A HOBBY”
March 26th, 2010 at 2:23 pm
perkin
i really dont see how u can say BOD has inner city kids attending the school. last time i check it cost money to go to that school, and u have to take a test and etc. so im not sure that they have inner city kids, prep kids yes
March 26th, 2010 at 2:28 pm
i heard he was trying to leave LL last year, but it didn’t work out. I do know there have been cutbacks at LL, maybe that’s why
March 26th, 2010 at 2:31 pm
JB-
Congrats on the Arroyo Job.. Sum Great skill guys over there.. I interviewed as well,(My first time ever)It was a great experience… i think it’s a hidden gem over there… See you in League play…
March 26th, 2010 at 3:27 pm
Congrats to Barnes on the Arroyo job, I have stated this is a very underrated position, and could be a very strong player in 2 years or 3.
The Berkeley scenario is turning out to be quite the horse race. Encinal’s Joe T. (well known on these boards) would be a great choice for the yellow jackets. Moving up to the highest level is a logical step for the Jet coach, and it comes a a surprise to nobody that Perenon is running hard for it.
Longero if he takes the Bishop O’dowd job is puzzling but a deeper look might reveal a few things: It is relatively well known the excellent coach has interviewed several times over the last few years. Also, with the newest CIF divisional classifiations out now, Las Lomas is the smallest school in Division II, the least number of students in all of D2.
But, the Dragons are right in the middle of the pack of a very watered down Division III bracket. And, with a couple of years to build the Dragons, Odowd could quickly become an attractive player in D3 state bowl picture, very capable of beating Hayward, Mt. Eden, Castro Valley, Arroyo, Tennyson and San Lorenzo. It seems like the only vexxing team for the Dragons has been San Leandro for the past 8 – 10 years or so.
March 26th, 2010 at 3:40 pm
KillerD I think that D-III just got stronger with the additions of YV & Petaluma. I’m sure that MC will petition back up to D-III to defend their championship plus it will bode better for them in terms of state. Las Lomas will still remain strong mostly because I believe their administration & that area is dedicated to winning. They could be D-III in a year only 6 kids away.
March 26th, 2010 at 4:44 pm
bhsfan, you’re right to an extent. O’DOWD has kids from catholic schools which are situated in some east oakland neighborhoods, and these kids are eligible for scholarships. They do have to test and where your from doesn’t always define who you are, so Perkins i don’t agree with you there.Congrats to Coach Barnes and good luck at Arroyo, and if Berkeley hires Coach T , our season week 4,6 will be very interesting.
March 26th, 2010 at 5:07 pm
Valid Points PERKIN, points noted about D3.
Peering into the “Scholarship” situation at Odowd, they fund only up to $6,000 of the $16,000 required to attend Dragonland.
That means even the poorest kid’s families have to cough up $10K per year to attend Odowd. With this economy it must make it tougher for the Dragons to recruit?
Sounds like Longero just wants a change of scenery given the fact at hand.
March 26th, 2010 at 5:21 pm
KillerD, thats a very good point, 10k is alot for even a middle class family in this economy, so it does make it hard on recruiting. Does anyone know the validity behind Coach Nickerson being on the O’Dowd selection commitee and wanting to be the new D Coord?
March 26th, 2010 at 6:52 pm
Island02………….thanks on the props/observation about only limited scholarship funding at Odowd.
Is it Nickerson as in Hardy Nickerson who is the coach/parent in question that is on the interview committee and is he the one wanting to be the D-Coordinator too?
March 28th, 2010 at 6:51 pm
…there has to be some ground rumbling, window rattlin’, picture frame tiltin’ news with all these slots open…
March 29th, 2010 at 9:00 am
i hope that they hire a good coach at castlemont, coach amin deny and barnes did a helluva job with that program, they need a good coach to cont. to keep it up
March 29th, 2010 at 9:46 am
thanks killer d for clarifying to people who assume private schools recruit with all this”scholarship” money. One thing you can do is apply for financial aid, but again, that’s only a drop in the bucket for what it costs to go there. good luck to all the coaches applying
March 29th, 2010 at 12:20 pm
BOD may not meet everyone’s definition of intercity kid but they definitely have different word ethics then the kids at Las Lomas. I’ve heard that off-season March, February Las Lomas will have 40-45 kids at night time work-outs. Thats not gonna happen at BOD for Longero.
March 29th, 2010 at 12:31 pm
LL is also making cut backs, that could be a reason he’s lookin elsewhere, but I think he was lookin prior to last season. he would def be an asset for B.O.D., but seeing as my kid plays basketball for B.O.D. and my nephew plays football for LL, I want him to stay there, at least one more season.
March 29th, 2010 at 4:45 pm
Valid point Perkin, I think you and KillerD summed it up pretty good. Whoever gets that BOD job has their work cut out ,dealing with the parents and getting a late start. It would definately benefit them if they hired someone the first week of April, Who’s on the selection panel because they’re dropping the ball on this one.
March 29th, 2010 at 10:07 pm
i thought it was already confirmed that the LL coach already had the BOD job
March 30th, 2010 at 12:28 am
no COACH T leaving the jets!?
March 30th, 2010 at 9:46 am
Nothing about the ODowd job has been confirmed according to people in the know.
Apparently there are still too many balls still being juggled and up in the air in Dragonland.
March 30th, 2010 at 1:09 pm
Ehsfan: Your Coach T leaving the Jets question is definitely an option for several reasons, even though the Encinal family has been obviously great to him and the other way around too.
Berkeley would be a big step up, on par with James Logan and De La Salle, with an overflow of NCAA D1 talent galore.
It is also no secret the city of Alameda school district is in very dire financial straights, and local media has reported that one of the high schools might be closed. If that happens, there is no way that Encinal will survive….it will be Alameda High that makes the cut and the Encinal property will be a Ghost Town. More than a few people believe this will actually happen within two years.
So, Coach T going to become the King Bee of the YellowJackets?
If the job is offered to him, Yes he will be gone.
March 30th, 2010 at 1:18 pm
Congrats to Coach Barnes for landing the Arroyo position.
Regarding the BOD situation, Fast and Physical does not have correct information. It was, in fact, a number of African American players whom approached the BOD admin in SUPPORT of Coach Perenon and want him returned as the head coach. My opinion is that Perenon would be a great fit for the Yellowjackets. His resume speaks for itself. He will bring a talented, experienced and extremely qualified staff with him. Remember that he took a middle of the road O’Dowd program to NCS titles and beat larger schools along the way. Those who know what came down at BOD with Perenon say it stinks and that BOD blew it. He is a fine coach, role model, gets his teams to play hard, they win, the players get tremendous support and assitance from him with recruiting. Perenon is respected by college coaches and recruiters. Perenon and his staff at BHS could be a legit threat to the big boys in D-1.
March 30th, 2010 at 4:03 pm
Perenon has become less and less relevant as the high school passing game has become more relevant.
And his resume does speak for itself… placing 4th in the HAAL. That’s nothing to write home about.
March 30th, 2010 at 4:27 pm
KillerD, thats the buzz on the island, we’re looking at some major cuts in @ 2 years time, and Encinal would be the school to get hit. With this said all the Alameda residents attending Encinal would obviously come to Alameda or go elsewhere, but the kids attending Encinal that live outside of Alameda would have to re-locate and AHS would continue to be closed enrollment. I think Coach T would be a great fit at Berkeley, he’s gets the most from his players and he did it with 22.
March 30th, 2010 at 4:32 pm
#87, After the BOD/Alameda game Perenon’s staff was starting to question his call about going for it on 4th down instead of kicking the chip shot. The year before BOD crushed Alameda, and alot of people expected the same. That field goal would have won the game, what was he trying to prove? BOD never really regrouped after that game and the 4th place finish showed that. I’m not sure Perenon would be the best fit for Berkeley.
March 30th, 2010 at 5:12 pm
Foothill losing QB Sean Mannion was expected, but losing their co-head coach Mannion to Silverton, OR sends a tremor through the football world of the east bay. Plus they lost their JV head coach Haubner to Livermore.
How good will Foothill be in 2010?
How many more coaches changes are still to come? For some reason, I have an eerie feeling more changes are still to come.
This has been a VERY tumultuous off-season for the Rank and File in the coaching profession.
March 30th, 2010 at 5:22 pm
no offense to Mannion- but come on, Sweeney is Foothill football.
March 30th, 2010 at 6:11 pm
To “Island 02″ … I recall reading Perenon’s quote in paper after Alameda game not wanting to put an inexperienced kid (the kicker) in that situation so early in the year and rather went with plays to the senior running back (Mario Brown) from the 2 yd line. Unfortunately they did not score, but don’t lose sight of the number of points allowed by BOD last fall. Perenon did a great job of coaching BOD last fall. Inexperienced line, QB coming back off of a major back injury, youth on defense (even though some starters were seniors, didn’t play much as juniors), developing QB during the season and adjusting his offensive style to take advantage of Balich (QB) and other young inexperienced talent. Remember they gave SL fits with 48 points.
EBFootabll … you forget that Perenon has developed some outstanding QBs at BOD over the years and has done well tooling his offensive scheme to the talent he has.
4th place in the HAAL last fall for that BOD team could be judged by many as an overachievement for that group of young and inexperienced players.
Further, wasn’t Berkeley pretty much a one man show with Galvin last fall? My bet is that Perenon’s offense and discipline style with the skill talent at BHS could be both entertaining and dominant.
March 30th, 2010 at 6:24 pm
I do think that Perenon is a pretty good coach his accomplishments speak for themselves but EB FB Fan wake up! That team last year way underachieved. They had a great group of athletes & what was suppose to be top player in the East Bay in Mario Brown. Even the writers on these blogs picked them to finish 1st in the HAAL & be in the top 2-3 at D-III if I remember correctly & that was after Martin transfered so don’t bring that up. Either these writers really blew it or Perenon really blew it. Maybe they can tell you why they over hyped what you call an young team.
March 30th, 2010 at 6:41 pm
Who will get the job at:
Berkeley High: Joe T. from Encinal, Perenon or Sims from the likes of St. Elizabeth
Bishop Odowd: Longero of Las Lomas, Hamilton of Concord or Turner from YV?
March 30th, 2010 at 6:42 pm
Is there another candidate at either Berkeley or ODowd that is a true Dark Horse and will come in late to claim the job?
March 30th, 2010 at 7:32 pm
KillerD Eureka also is now D-III. Whether or not they petition up remains to be seen but I bet they stay down since they had a senior laden team & lost their all everything USC back. So more then likely the D-II champ will be D-III next year.
March 30th, 2010 at 7:53 pm
I hope Coach T isnt leaving Encinal! We can’t lose him! He has done so much for our school and football team and it would hurt to see him go. Please coach Tenerio don’t jet out for berkeley.
March 30th, 2010 at 7:55 pm
tenerio is leaving? how and when did this happen? dont leave coach!
March 30th, 2010 at 7:58 pm
Berkeley doenst need to look any further fo a coach. With Barnes at Arroyo High the only other two that should be considered for the job is either Peranon or Coach Joe T. Berkeley needs to pull the trigger NOW!

Heads up…
A tremor forebodes an earthquake… I’d say a III for Silverton (pretty low on the Mercalli scale in Pton as Junior points out, maybe a II -”Felt by a few people at rest, especially on upper floors of buildings. Delicately suspended objects may swing.” )
“Eerie”- sure, why not?
March 30th, 2010 at 8:43 pm
I hear you Perkin, we took it as a slap in the face, and our defense came up big. The kicker was doing a good enough job to kick it.Both schools need to pull the trigger now BOD and Berkeley.
March 30th, 2010 at 8:45 pm
I would imagine the Eureka Loggers will play at Divison III this fall. They ruled the roost with Vainuku this past season at DII, but with the reloading year coming up, I wouldn’t think they would opt up to II.
March 30th, 2010 at 8:49 pm
Perkin … I agree with you that Perenon is a pretty good coach. In fact, better than pretty good! 09 BOD team endured some early season distractions, injuries and the QB not being really ready until about the middle of the season. I think some “experts” might have overhyped the offensive line. One of the big kids didn’t get on the field until after the middle of the season and the other big kid still has a long way to go but he did play hard. Mario Brown did not play up to his hype and from what I hear he missed most of training camp and certainly did not look the same as in his junior year. The LBs were young and the secondary didn’t come around until late in the year. From what i saw the team lacked depth and experience. Perenon did a great job of adjusting his offensive attack once the QB settled down and some young kids stepped up to become playmakers and the o-line became somewhat consistent. The defense killed them often, giving up points and numerous big plays at crucial times. They looked tentative at times on defense. I know the def coordinator and their play on defense last fall was absolutely out of character for what BOD has been for year after year. They did give Alhambra a real battle in NCS playoff game. Also remember, BOD did win the NCS in 2004, not THAT long ago and has been in NCS playoffs for a whole bunch of consecutive years. Perenon has run a clean, disciplined program for over two decades at BOD. The cream of the crop article showed BOD to be near the top of the high schools in the E Bay producing scholarship players. The facebook blog certainly shows tremndous alumni support for him and overwhelming criticsm for the school and the AD for not rehiring him. Many are really angry at the school and are pulling donations and future relationships with the school. I know Perenon is respected by most of the EBay football officials. Also, in over two decades at BOD Perenon has had only one losing season during the regular season. And that was accomplished at a school known for basketball that did not have any winning football tradition before he became head coach. As a big HS football fan I hope Berkeley HS jumps at the opportunity to hire Perenon and his staff. Perenon has shown that with the necessary tools he can compete with and beat some of the big boys in D-1. Could be very interesting at BHS!
March 30th, 2010 at 9:39 pm
KillerD I love reading your blogs your a football guy. They should give you your own blog during football season.
After a couple meetings with my coaching staff I’ve decided not to pursue the B-high job any further. I was hoping to keep this under the radar but stuff gets out Carter got on me good for not telling him about it. I interviewed as its been blogged & it just isn’t the right situation for me. I don’t want to through B-High under the bus but I was shocked at the level of commitment that their administration has. For years I’ve blamed coaches & kids over there for their lack of success but their administration I feel just wants a football coach not too interested in winning championships. It really is too bad because the one parent on the committee was the only one asking any significant questions as far as what it would take to get that school over the top.
We’re getting ready to kick the program up a notch with Spring Ball right around the corner & I don’t want kids not showing for a month using the excuse that I’m leaving. Jet parents, players, & alumni keep supporting us we have to get this parcel tax past to keep our school open. I will see all the players Thursday at the meeting.
March 30th, 2010 at 11:27 pm
coach t good luck this year and goodluck with keeping the school open,
not sure if perenon and the b high players would have great chemistry, we shall see if he is the new coach. fast and physical might be right.
March 31st, 2010 at 8:40 am
I guess that opens up the door for Perenon for the Berkeley High job. Shocking news coach Joe about Berkeley.
March 31st, 2010 at 9:07 am
Who’s gonna get the job when Alameda High and Encinal combine? Tenorio or Rocklin?
March 31st, 2010 at 11:01 am
Coach Tenorio, thank you for the remarks and your outstanding work is well noted as you Refuel the Jets every year for success!
Notes on Jobs:
Berkeley: WHAT is the name of the Lord’s Creation is happening within the Hive of the Yellow Jackets???
Doing your Due Diligence is ONE thing, but giving off the impression to your top interview candidates that Football MIGHT not be that important at Berkeley High is quite another!?!
For the sake of the young players wanting to carry the rock at Berkeley and come off the edge to sack their opponents’ QB’s, let us hope Berkeley squeezes the trigger and hires a great coach before every coach on their short list hightails it out of there whilst shaking their heads in utter befuddlement. To be Clear……Berkeley High is a GREAT job, talent overflowing at least as much as any other school in the bay, probably more.
Bishop O’Dowd: Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?????
Either the interview panel is going to execute a wonderful stunner like the Rocky-n-Bulwinkle “Pull a Rabbit Out of Their Hat” or this Dragonland hiring process has beocme more mixed up, convoluted and twisted than those old Rubber Band Engines on a
.99 cent Balsa Wood Airplane that you buy while standing in line at the grocery store.
Which one shall it turn out to be?

The debate regarding your proposed question might be better served if the parcel tax in Alameda does not pass. Let us hope that it does pass however
March 31st, 2010 at 12:15 pm
Just striking up a hypothetical conversation…
It would suck if Encinal did close but it might be the most fiscally responsible thing to do. That school was built to serve the navy youth but the base is no longer around (thanks to ron dellums).
But IF they did combine, I think another powerhouse would be born. Imagine that… Alameda’s ingenuity and discipline combined with Encinal’s speed and strength. Could be something pretty damn cool.
But who would get the job?
I’m not tryin to pick a fight. This is just a bar, barbershop, water cooler talk to me. People take this blog way too serious.
March 31st, 2010 at 1:25 pm
If you combine the two schools then Alameda would then be D1. That would be tough for them but also very interesting. I think Alameda would just keep the coach they have in place now. Why change? I think Rocklin did a good job last year and this year the Hornets will be better. We have our starting QB and RB coming back this year plus a number of other key pos. players coming back. But as far as the coaching change it wont happen. Alameda High doesnt like Coach Tenario and wouldn’t take him over Rocklin.
March 31st, 2010 at 2:01 pm
EBfootball, It is a fair and interesting question. My Choice of course would be Coach Joe T. As he has shown the last 3 years running he is the superior coach. But I think it will probably come down to whoever has the most influence with the powers that be. KillerD, Keep it up you are always a good read. Jet Pride!
March 31st, 2010 at 2:29 pm
Alameda has always had a older white coach & always will. They dogged the best candidate out (Kemp Moyer) for an Assistant Freshmen Coach cause he fit their bill. Say what you want its the truth that guy is terrible. He’s lucky that Moyer stuck it out with him. But I hear that a number of top coaches quit from last year so we’ll see how this guy keeps it together. You say they have good players coming back so it should be even easier. Having good players always makes coaching easier.
Tenorio’s got 2 years to find a new job should have tried to get B-high.
March 31st, 2010 at 4:50 pm
again this is all a reality of the economy. these committees are being told to save as much as possible no matter what kind of product gets put out on the field next year. and it is even more sad because it affects the kids which are the most important part of this whole process. you see coaches like carter and tenorio who come in and give kids opportunities they would not even have dreamed of before high school. not only that, they give them someone to look up to which is sometimes missing in these kids’ lives as well as instill in them self-respect and discipline. yet this takes a backseat to saving money.
March 31st, 2010 at 8:38 pm
Respectfully Murdoc, can we please leave SKIN COLOR out of coaching searches and opinions? There are many great coaches of every skin color, white, black, brown and every color out there.
It makes me sick (Not You) but just the thought of a coach being picked to coach or not due to the color of his skin.
March 31st, 2010 at 8:42 pm
As the wheel of the coaching carousel turns, who gets the top two jobs remaining?
Berkeley: Perenon or Sims? Can the yellow jackets afford to turn down Perenon’s overture and pursuit of the job? Or, is Sims ready to Leap Frog several divisions to lead the yellow jackets?
Odowd: Longero (if this was a done deal) it would have been announced by now. Yes? No? There must be a fly in the ointment, and pebble in the shoe…
Who else is circling these two jobs?
March 31st, 2010 at 9:50 pm
I heard from a reliable source who wished to remain anonymous that Longero turned down the O’Dowd job.
March 31st, 2010 at 9:54 pm
SETTLE DOWN
JB bringin some wins back to Arroyo!!
April 1st, 2010 at 12:02 am
FORMER HORNET. its not up to ALAMEDA high to pick the next coach.. its up to a commitee and lets bee real.. 25-2 the last 2 years or 8-13-1 you do the math.. 5-6-1 is not a good record buddy aTLEAST in REGIONAL POWER
April 1st, 2010 at 8:02 am
If the LL coach refused to sign with the Dragons…who then is entering the fray?
Turner at YV or Hamilton at Concord?
What about the Collegiate assistant from out of state that was offered the job? Did he flee the Dragon’s cave too?
Looks like Berkeley and Odowd have sowed some interesting oats this off-season. Berkeley just got the luck of the draw losing Coach Carter and they made an Excellent Hire of Coach Carter previously.
Will the yellow jackets step up and ask Coach Perenon to sign on the dotted line?
April 1st, 2010 at 8:29 am
Did someone say Rocklin was a good coach and doing a good job? Wow? I think some of his assistant coaches or former assistant coaches needs to speak up,

Perkin, that is the very strong rumor making its way through the coaching platoons. And, if that is true, then what a bad state of affairs it might be for the kids only wanting the Dragons to hire the best coach.
If there is a parent on the interview panel that also has a son on the team and that he wants to be the defensive coordinator TOO…wow!
This might, and I stress (might) not be such a great job after all………………………
April 1st, 2010 at 10:39 am
Yes Rocklin did a good job last year. He had that team competing in every game last year. Lost a few games that we should’ve won but that wont happen next year. If you look at our 5 losses this past year there were only 2 games that we lost by more than 7 points. Those games will be wins next year. TRUST ME! Rocklin has lead us to the playoffs in 2 of his 3 years. Not to bad for a former “Freshman Coach” you think?
April 1st, 2010 at 3:23 pm
rocklin is ok he hasnt won the island bowl or berkeley so i’m not impressed with the victories he’s piled up. the ’07 team had alot of returning players. yes he’s been to the playoffs twice but no victories. all he told me was that he had 20 something seniors this year an laid an egg against encinal we hornetfans arent happy.
April 1st, 2010 at 5:22 pm
KillerD thanks for bringing that up, ones skin color shouldn’t be a factor in the firing or hiring of anyone in any job, but unfortunately that is not always the case. I’m not referring to Alameda High specifaclly, just generalizing. As for Murdoc, I’m not on this website to bash any coach or comment negatively about my own head coach. Like any coaching staff there will be disagreements; but, the head coach has the last word. No one or nothing is perfect we just make the best of what we have. #125,126, I don’t know who you guy’s are but thanks for your support. Until we win a playoff just going isn’t good enough, and this being my son’s last year ,anything less than an NCS title is disappointing….lol! It’s frustrating for the players , fans and coaches to lose the games we feel we should be winning, i.e. Newark,Encinal,El Cerrito, yes we had a senior laden team and thought we could capitalize on their experience…5-5-1 is unacceptable.
April 1st, 2010 at 6:48 pm
Killer D and Perkin make great points about the BOD situation. My sources tell me that you are both right on with regard to Longero turning it down. Although Longero has a history of applying for a job every year (and not taking the job when offered), the BOD position is becoming a job that no reputable coach would want. The word is that the school president shoved Coach Perenon out and that most returning players, mutiple alums and members of the BOD community have sent letters and are on different internet sites calling for his reinstatement.
Yes, there is a parent/coach actively involved in the search process. According to some HAAL sources, that parent/coach is also being pushed to a new coach as the new defensive coordinator. The question that comes up is he looking out for his own kid or the best for BOD football? The concern is that he coached with Perenon’s staff last year and some are hinting that he might have backstabbed the staff and Perenon. Not good.
There is also word that hardly any kids are in the weight room or working in the off season. None of this bodes well for a program that was among the best in the E Bay for a long time. My sources say that there is no one at BOD that knows what they are doing. The AD is not capable or in charge. There is disagreement on pushing Perenon out without a solid reason.
We cannot lose sight that the BOD program did achieve well for over two decades. Yes, they did have a sub par season in 2009 but the winning consistency for over two decades speaks volumes to what Perenon and his staff did there for years. Every program (except DLS!! -lol) does experience a down year or two here and there. BOD might be REJOICING to finish as high as 4th place in the HAAL in 2010 with the situation as it is now.
I say Perenon to Berkeley is a great win for the Yellowjackets!
April 1st, 2010 at 6:57 pm
Terry Smith would be a great hire if he applied for BOD with his style of offense…Tennyson struggles every year because of the lack of athletes in that school..If Smith got the BOD job his great knowledge of offense mixed with the type of players that go to ODowd would be a winning combination for the Dragons
April 1st, 2010 at 7:40 pm
Island02 you talk with respect so I’m not trying to start anything but the Encinal game 34-3 until late in the 4th quarter really wasn’t close. When during that game did you feel you should have won? Maybe YV that was pretty close.
April 1st, 2010 at 8:13 pm
A collegiate coach is in the bay area now that has shown strong interest in the Dragons job.
So, is he in town to accept the job and do a press conference? Or is he on the 2nd round of interviews for the Berkeley job?
Or, does he just Happen to be in the area?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?
April 1st, 2010 at 8:15 pm
Again alameda said they are gonna win the island bowl since encinal defeated them in 07 snapping a 5 year skided. ALAMEDA stands a good chance this year but, word is theis is no dedication and hard work being put in. vise versa for encinal i hear this years team is not a LOADED or talented as the years past. they look small to me
April 1st, 2010 at 8:50 pm
the parent who wants to be a coach at BOD and is involved in the hiring process is not looking out for the team/school’s interests or even his kid’s interests. he is looking out for his own and again this creates such a bad situation because most good coaches will want to decide on their staff and not be told they have to take a coach.
April 1st, 2010 at 9:58 pm
Murdoc honestly I thought we could right before they took the opening KO 98 yds. We had a great week of practice . EHS FAN , there’s hard work going on it will pick up even more after the break. We have alot of multi sport players baseball, rugby and swimming. Hopefully we can break the skid and win the Island Bowl but I know Coach T will have his team well prepared and Encinal still has a bunch of athletes and 1 big ass athletic lineman.
April 1st, 2010 at 11:18 pm
Yea Encinal has a HUGE lineman. He is at least 6’6 300+ He was killing our guys last year along with others on that big ass line. They have a nice RB that played in last years game that I think was a junior or sophomore. Can’t really remember. I agree, last years Island Bowl wasn’t close but this coming year will be different. I am confident in my team and they have good players coming back and it will be a battle for our guys. Hopefully we can pull it out! Go Hornets!
April 2nd, 2010 at 5:21 am
oh yes same with alameda they have there returning QB.. first team all leaguer i may add. he was really struggling in the start of the season but he picked it up.. there Hawaiian back up Qb is not bad either. and ALAMEDA has the returning rusher in the bay back in there back field. so alameda has some important parts. AS well as encinal. in a great RB in jonathan allen which in my eyes is D1. and there VERY speedy WR. encinal is looking great on defense queaston is? whose going to take care of the inside LB. is it VEE? who also is gonna play Qb? or by commitee?? and what about encinal secondary?… ALAMEDA has alot of holes to fill as well.. alot more the EHS.. but i want it too be a good island bowl.. last one was 07, 05. its been a long time coming.

Interesting points EB FB FAN but I strongly disagree with your blanket statement about the Dragon job is one “that no reputable football coach would want.”
Odowd is a wealthy private school, and with the shocking majority of public districts bleeding money by the millions, the Dragon job (with proper administrative support behind it) is a very good job.
If the parent/coach currently residing on the Dragon interview panel actually did engage in shenannigans last season and if he is currently politicking to be the new defensive coordinator for whomever the new head coach is, then that is very bad form indeed.
Two candidates have been offered the job, Longero and a collegiate assistant and both have yet to accept to date. This could be a case where the hiring process is privately “Re-opened” and the next tier of candidates is reviewed again. Hamilton of Concord and Turner of YV might be attractive
Berkeley job: All is quiet from the outside in, which has got to make the former Dragon coach Perenon very happy. If the St. Liz coach Sims is still orbiting the job, then it seems to be between Perenon, Sims, Hamilton.
April 2nd, 2010 at 12:23 pm
killerd u got it wrong, hamilton did not put n for the b high job. dont think he leaving concord at this, based on conversation with him, but he did not apply for b high at all i can guarentee that
April 2nd, 2010 at 1:42 pm
Who will get this Berkeley High job? It sounds like only one or two people actually want this job. Peranon and Sims. What’s the hold up? What’s going on over there at B-High? Nobody wants the job and GOOD coaches keep pulling out.
April 2nd, 2010 at 2:01 pm
I remember a 150 string blog last year talking about who would get the Cal High job and absolutely no one had it right. As a matter of fact, most of the coaches being talked about for that job later confirmed that they hadn’t even applied.
Bottom line: all this speculation is exactly that, mere speculation. Berkeley High could be those two candidate, but it could be someone you are even talking about. Just like Billeci at Cal. I don’t think most of these bloggers with their so-called information are to be trusted.
April 2nd, 2010 at 3:56 pm
Bishop Odowd job: The job was offered to a collegiate assistant and Longero, those are both facts. About Hamilton Concord and Turner YV, they both applied for the Dragon job.
Berkeley: It is odd why it is taking so long.
A year ago, who would have thought that these two jobs would have remained open for such a lengthy period of time given two points: One, each job came open early and Two, there have been many excellent candidates that have applied, been interviewed and now either pulled out of the running due to the long process and/or turned down the jobs?

Question of the Day:
Between the Private school of O’dowd and all of their potential resources, and the abundance of great talent at Berkeley, which JOB is better, Odowd or Berkeley?
Tough Call: Private school DIII or Huge Public DI
April 2nd, 2010 at 5:09 pm
given the current economy i would say for right now BOD just because there will be money coming in to support the program. but this whole parent wanting to coach thing really is a problem. if we were in better economic times i would say berkeley because there is a great amount of talent and large pool to choose from as well and you don’t have all the parents trying to stick their nose and opinions in like they feel they are entitled to at BOD.

Breaking News:
Upon further review, from all points of reference connected to the Dragon’s prolooooooooooooooooooooooonged hiring process, these bits of information have been confirmed from several coaches that have interviewed or from the close friends of the coaches that have interviewed for the job:
1. A VERY, VERY over-involved team parent/coach is pulling major strings in the decision making process, and has been annointed WAY, WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY too much authority in this process
2. This same parent/coach has a Son on the Dragons team
3. This same parent/coach wants to be the new defensive coordinator for the yet to be named new head coach – CONFLICT of Interest when you combine #2 & 3
4. This same parent/coach’s overt interference and unsubtle inferences of wanting to call the shots on defense have caused the collegiate assistant coach and coach Longero to Both REJECT the job offer
How in the Lord’s name, in the year 2010 can a well-funded private school, with a large amount of alumni and parent support totally and completely SCREW THIS WHOLE THING UP this Bad???????
What is Going on at Bishop O’Dowd?
Anybody have more inside info – Speak Up!

They should just make this parent the head coach if he wants to coach bad. looks like they aren’t going to find anyone else. i guess this is the type of incompetency you would expect from an admin that fired perenon. i actually have no problem with a person being a coach for a team their child plays for, as long as it doesn’t affect their ability to do the job. sometimes parents are actually harder on their children when they coach them. sometimes coaches do favor their children, but I tend to find that more prevalent in the youth ranks more so then the high school ranks.
The main problem i have with the said parent is that he is involved in making a decision about a hire while at the same time forcing the potential coach to take him. at this point they most likely will get a very young, inexperienced guy. and boy if this parent gets to become the D-co and calls the shots that defense better be pretty good next year. otherwise he might find himself run off just like perenon was. i just feel bad for the kids on the team in this situation as i’m sure many of them would just like to have a coach and get going with conditioning at this point.

Unless KillerD reveals his sources, I don’t think any of his information is to be trusted at all. As far as I’m concerned there is no overly involved parent. Sounds like rumors to me.

April 3rd, 2010 at 12:49 am
Hey Renegades10: YOU are correct, the Kids always come first, no matter what. And the conditioning program must be lagging, in fact, one other coach that interviewed for the Dragons job believes that the parent/coach in question DOES want to be the head coach!!!
To InTheKnow: Everybody knows by now that Longero interviewed and turned down a job offer, plus the other top candidates chatted and discovered that the college assistant that was flown out to interview, also had a 2nd interview before he flew back home, all in a 48-hour period. He was offered the job too but the job was not quite ready – so he said no thanks.
Berkeley seems like they lost two high quality candidates in Barnes and Joe T. from Encinal.
It is bizarre that Berkeley and O’dowd could both end up giving jobs to new head coaches by DEfault instead of other criteria leading the way first.

Well, you have read Hardy Nickerson’s name on here pasted on this board by OTHER sources, not mine. But one look at the Odowd roster and it’s not too hard to figure out.
So, if the other sources on this board are true, then yes, Hardy Nickerson is on the interview panel, does have a son on the team, and does want to be the Defensive Coordinator too.
But, the sources on this board that put his name out there first COULD be wrong, but that appears unlikely at this point.

One coach making a late push for the Dragon’s job is the Head Coach at Tennyson….it makes one wonder if he will be in the final two or not?
Anybody know for sure about the Tennyson coach?
April 3rd, 2010 at 1:13 am
From the sources I/we have compiled the Dragon’s interview panel consists of:
Athletic Director, assistant AD, Vice Principal, Parent/Coach (name ?) and three or four student athletes
Does anybody else have confirmation on this because this set up has been repeated to me more than twice regarding who is on the panel for the Dragons.
No word on the panel for Berkeley though
April 3rd, 2010 at 6:09 am
KillerD i was actually thinking to myself much of what you posted that maybe this parent knows any sensible coach would not want to be forced to take a coach and would want to hire their their own staff and because of this request would turn down the offer, therefore with the need for a coach fast approaching he will get the job. What a disaster if this happens.

Touche’
Renegades10……………….that would be TERRIBLE if that happens to those kids, let us hope not
April 3rd, 2010 at 11:19 am
Just received a text message from a head coach in the Mt. Diablo Unified school district that Concord head coach Brian Hamilton has emerged as the leading candidate for the Bishop O’dowd job.
If the Dragon’s can come up with a strong enough financial package to compensate Hamilton enough for him to exit the Minuteman Coup in 2010, then he will leave the financially burdened district, jump ship, and ride out this season, before being very well compensated in 2011 and beyond.
Hamilton’s no-huddle 4 & 5 wideouts attack would be a drastic change from Perenon’s ground game offense. Are the Dragon kids and fans ready to air it out a lot more in 2010 and the future?
No word on Berkeley, anybody?
April 3rd, 2010 at 1:12 pm
Financial package? Meaning salary as a coach or a job as a teacher?
April 3rd, 2010 at 1:31 pm
Perkin…….apparently there is not a set position on campus at Odowd, so it’s being thrown together.
A weight room class here, and teach “some type of class” there, just for the 2010 season. Combine those things with a Summer Coaching Fee and the coaching stipend for the head coach, it’s the hope of the Dragons to stockpile enough funds to enable the new head coach to “get by”, then after the 2010 season is over, have a very healthy salary and benefits for 2011 and beyond.
* Does anybody actually KNOW if Perenon is suing the school in an effort to get his old coaching job back? Or is he just trying to get a settlement?
April 3rd, 2010 at 2:23 pm
The New CIF NCS Division Classifications came out a few weeks ago.
Berkeley Enrollment of 3,400 makes them hard to beat talent wise by sheer numbers for their League.
Pinole and Alameda High don’t even top 2,000 kids. This job becomes even more attractive then as the Yellow Jacket Hive continues to expand.
Bishop O’dowd has an enrollment of 1,200 kids.
The rest of the HAAL enrollments are:
San Leandro: 2,675
San Lorenzo: 1,618
Hayward: 1,685
Castro Valley: 2,920
Tennyson: 1,450
Mt. Eden: 1,980
Arroyo: 1,980
That puts the Dragons with the smallest enrollment in the HAAL, but as the only Private school, they can recruit the top 1 or 2 players from each school in their league theoretically.
April 3rd, 2010 at 6:00 pm
R10-KlrD,
Are you saying an NFL veteran of 16 years, Pro-bowler for five, second team defense all NFL 90′s decade, LB coach for the Chitown Bears, Cal graduate, is unfit to be a high school DC (or even a coach) or part of a hiring committee? Incredible. Who cares who his kid is? Give examples of undeserved favoritism in your local district. Atkinson’s twins both playing varsity as Sophs made (some) sense due to talent level at that school. He was a definite sideline coach. I doubt the head coach would embarass the kid (nor the dad) if he wasn’t a player by keeping him on the field at the expense of W’s. And if the bigshot doesn’t like how his kid’s PT is coming along, they’d just transfer their progeny to another Catholic school (you guys know that call) willing to charge them full tuition, plus maybe an honorarium/new weight equipment to start… My observation is almost ALL assistants at most Bay Area high schools have resumes paling in comparison to the (supposed) BOD “parent”. That cracks me up…calling him a “parent.” Some schools are pleading for assistants who played HS only, let alone a D2/3 experienced player to help coach. Trying to get help at anywhere from $500-$1000 a season for assistants (public schools at least…who doesn’t do for the love of the game anyway?) having ANY top college player, let alone a former NFL’er would be welcomed with open arms.
Yes, I am biased as an Old Blue. Having a Bachelors degree from UC would also make him a little bit smarter than most people sitting on HS admit committees. Those of you reading know that jobs galore open up every year. If there’s a power struggle with the new head coach and his DC, one of them will find a new job, OR maybe he’ll be content a la George, Sr. with just helping the kids without the honcho title. By the way, his nickname is- don’t know if it came from his Compton/Watts upbringing or later-…………..The Dragon.
April 3rd, 2010 at 7:16 pm
Cha 1012,
why didn’t he apply for the job?
April 3rd, 2010 at 8:26 pm
Well said Chs 1012. Killer D, assuming Hardy Nickerson is on the panel (which I contend we can’t know for sure, because this is a blog and you can type whatever the hell you want, including saying that your friend texted you with information), then who the heck are you to judge his character?! Do you even know him? If it is true, perhaps O’Dowd has made a great evaluation saying that they want him on staff, and they are looking for a coach that would mold well with him. Perhaps not. My point is: who the hell you think you are? I hope the rest of you reading the blog don’t judge O’Dowd or Hardy Nickerson based on what this guy, who lives on a high school blog, writes. Seriously dude, get a life. I’m embarrassed for myself for even responding to you, but I feel like someone needs to say it.
April 4th, 2010 at 1:15 am
Judging one’s character never came from me (so put that away please), but I have questioned the pre-setting (I think it was a mistake if Odowd put a parent/coach on the hiring panel who also wants to be the new defensive coordinator). THAT IS A MISTAKE.
It does not matter what a person’s professional football playing experience was when it comes to the best process of hiring a high school football coach. But like was mentioned earlier, it is always to be respected by all – my respect for that person included.
My question has CLEARLY been based on whether anybody on an interview panel might be positioning himself to become a the new Defensive Coordinator. It has NOTHING to do with WHO the man is or is not, but it does have to do with the built-in conflict of interest as a mistake, that is all.
Having a selection panel member who wants to be a Coordinator for the new head coach (If that is True), then automatically slants the natural interview environment AWAY from any potentially great head coaches (at Odowd for example) who for ANY reason do not sync with what that certain panel member might want to be a part of on the new coach’s staff, OR, that the new head coach WILL probably already bring his OWN Offensive and Defensive Coordinators, and WILL only take the job if he can Bring his OWN people with him.
The rule of thumb is that a new head coach gets to bring his own coaches with him to a new job, Especially when it comes to Coordinator positions.
Now, only two things are possible based on the information given by coaches that have interviewed:
A. Either the information is true that a team parent/coach IS on the interview panel and does want to Call the Defense for the new head coach, and has made that evident enough, or
B. The team parent/coach on the Interview Panel does NOT want to be involved in calling the defense
In the end, a few coaches involved as candidates have expressed the same concerns, and it’s difficult to believe they would not be telling the truth.
Either way, Odowd will hire a good coach, but questioning an intriguing item or two about their process is fair.
By the way, if you Go Back and READ other posts on this board, it was NOT me who said this team parent/coach might have done this or that to former coach Perenon, it was another blogger.
Keep it fair, my question is with the process.
April 4th, 2010 at 1:19 am
After that Other blogger mentioned rumors about whether a certian team parent/coach MIGHT have done this or that to former coach Perenon, only THEN did I state IF, What IF that was the case

Cha 1012,
why didn’t he apply for the job?
EBfootball: the second answer to your question is that if he HAD expressed interest in the head coaching position and HAD applied for the job, then he would have been automatically Eliminated from being on the interview panel at all, and the new head coach (once chosen) would have known that he had applied for the head job too
April 4th, 2010 at 12:59 pm
To #159…. The difference between coaching the bears and coaching at BOD is that you actually have to teach the game. No doubt that Nickerson has more knowledge than anybody in the HAAL, but can he convey his message? Don’t know about that. Not saying that he can’t, but the reality is that knowledge and the ability to teacher do not come hand-in-hand.
Chances are that he can though.
April 4th, 2010 at 10:43 pm
IntheKnow: The last part of your #159 Post in reads as follows –
“Those of you reading know that jobs galore open up every year. If there’s a power struggle with the new head coach and his DC, one of them will find a new job,”
a. If the Defensive Coordinator your supporting in your post engages in a “power struggle” with the new head coach within this coming first season, I GUARANTEE it will be the Def Coord that is FIRED, and SHOULD be Fired, and HE will be the one escorted OFF the premises by campus security for good
b. That’s the way it should be
Another Part of your Quote reads as such –
“My observation is almost ALL assistants at most Bay Area high schools have resumes paling in comparison to the (supposed) BOD “parent”. That cracks me up…calling him a “parent.” Some schools are pleading for assistants who played HS only, let alone a D2/3 experienced player to help coach. Trying to get help at anywhere from $500-$1000 a season for assistants (public schools at least…who doesn’t do for the love of the game anyway?) having ANY top college player, let alone a former NFL’er would be welcomed with open arms.”
a. Your off the cuff remark denegrating most ALL bay area assistant football coaches is myopic at best, insulting at worst by stating nearly all assistants resumes are “paling in comparison” to the Dragon parent/coach.
b. EVERY outstanding head coach and assistant coach I’ve known has coached for Free, and the minimal stipend is a token.
c. If you’ve ever had the opportunity to work with former college and NFL players as a fellow assistant coach, you hopefully have learned they are as good or as bad as every other group or band of coaches. Some are very good teachers, some are not, that’s a fact.
d. Your saying that having ANY top college or pro player would be welcomed with open arms by a place like Odowd. NOT true, it all depends upon the person’s ability to teach, adapt, adjust and earn respect by his daily actions over several years. Many coaching FLOPS have emerged from the ranks of being a former college or pro player, while some other very good ones have sprung up too.
e. Designing and Implementing successful schemes to stop the veer, double wing, run and shoot, wishbone, triple option, spin offense is far more difficult than having a very good playing pedigree and some short time coaching experience. It does not compare because an excellent high school coach must deal with the cards he’s been dealt and win with sub-par talent much of the time.
** The longer the Odowd hiring process Drags on, the more and more these Blogs touting a certain parent/coach’s galant mettle to step up and lead the Odowd program arise through the Internet and magically appear on this blog and others.
It was a BIIIIIIIIGGG, BIG MISTAKE by Odowd putting a parent/coach on the hiring panel that also wants to be the new Defensive Coordinator.
And IT IS A MISTAKE that might cost the kids and program dearly.
Let us hope that is not the case, and AGAIN, it makes NO Difference WHO the Parent/Coach in question is, it only matters that the mistake CAN be fixed, by simply allowing the new Head Football Coach at Odowd to Bring In his OWN Defensive and Offensive Coordinators.
April 4th, 2010 at 10:51 pm
Playing experience has NOTHING to do with ability to coach. Often times the better the player the worse they are as a coach. To be ahigh level athlete you are so physically gifted that it is hard to explain how to do the things you did to someone smaller and slower than you
For example, Mt. Diablo just hired a guy with a ton of arena league experience and even a year in the NFl, but they will go 0-10 because he doesnt know how to be a high school coach.

i have to agree that not all good players are cut out to be good coaches and as was pointed out coaching at the high school level is much different then college. and not all former NFL players would be welcomed with open arms. it is pretty well known that Joe Montana wanted to have a little more input beyond what parents are allowed at DLS and Lad did not want to have this. Then during the oaks christian piece that was on espn, the Oaks coach, Reddell, said he let Joe on the field during games to talk to Nick. Lad would not allow this at all.
i don’t mean to say that this parent is a bad or greedy person and my last comment was more me enjoying a little conspiracy theory rather then thinking it to be true and if it has come across this way i apologize. but you can’t deny that BOD showed bad judgment in placing someone in this position who also wants to coach on the staff. it is a big conflict of interest. who knows maybe it will all work out and this parent turns out to be an outstanding coach, however until that happens and the more this hiring process gets drawn out i can’t help but think this is playing a role in it.
April 5th, 2010 at 9:04 am
ok lets get a new topic going…this is getting old especially considering still nothing has happened…this should get some serious talking going…this is my 1st look at 2010 top 15…if people have more info on some teams definately want to hear it.
#1 DLS – until dethroned they will be here, plus with talent returning i dont think any question…but do hear they are struggling to find that great RB…my guess though they will find it.
#2 Pitt – lost a lot of talent but with the return of their QB they have the best duel threat QB in the bay area this year. plus im sure still plenty of speed and athleticism to replace those skilled positions.
#3 MV – i will go with history here but this could go many directions. lose 2 great ones but return the best player in the bay area this year in mcgovern. plus they seem to always have a qb in the wings.
#4 SRV – this may seem high but return a lot and definately improved as the season went last year plus with the next great EBAL QB coming back should be tough to beat.
#5 Deer valley – return some good players but lose a lot. but the schools lofty enrollment should allow them to reload quickly.
#6 b-high – might be too high might be too low but until they find a coach a huge unknown. still lots of athletes as always.
#7 concord – i think they finally break through this year with arguably the best throwing QB in the bay are this year plus return of a solid RB.
#8 logan – lost 2 great players but again loft enrollment numbers should allow a quick recovery.
#9 foothill – no more mannion and i think they take a step back this year, but still have rowand and sweeney so always a tough out.
#10 washington – lost some key players but did play in semi-finals last year and have been on a steady rise every year.
#11 san leandro – got to believe they will return to the powerhouse they were soon.
#12 granada – if atkinson twins return of course…but with all av lost i think they have a chance to move up the ranks in the ebal possibly even beating foothill again.
#13 heritage – been on steady rise as well brokethrough with solid season last year and should continue to get better.
#14 Antioch – been knocking on the door at D1 i think this year they finally get to the playoffs…
#15 CP – was here or AV but the fact they ran them pretty good in playoffs without AV qb, but still couldnt stop them. they are always tough because you have to put in whole different game plan with their offense.
April 5th, 2010 at 9:06 am
oops left out cal high…ill put them at #11 ahead of SL so slide everyone down 1….lost to washington twice last year so cant put them ahead even if NCS committee does…do have a good RB returning
April 5th, 2010 at 9:09 am
i guess could argue foothill ahead of logan using same arument for wash and cal…but my feeling is lights out play of mannion was the reason. but if they got another real good qb coming up i would put them ahead of logan
April 5th, 2010 at 9:30 am
Wasn’t Comes at SRV a senior last year?
“#4 SRV – this may seem high but return a lot and definately improved as the season went last year plus with the next great EBAL QB coming back should be tough to beat.”
April 5th, 2010 at 10:47 am
the soph kid that played in playoff game pitt…
April 5th, 2010 at 3:55 pm
the EBAL will be stacked with qb’s next year. Houston at DLS, Lockie at MV, and and Kline at SRV all of whom will be juniors. Houston is the only one returning who saw major playing time. I know Lockie saw some but obviously sat behind Nottingham. Kline played JV last year, but all the reports on him are that he is very good. SRV has a very solid junior class coming up so they will be a team to watch out for.
Norcalpride- I will have to say though that I’m not quite sure McGovern is the best player in the Bay Area or even in his own league. Obviously I am a little biased here in saying that both Blake Renaud and Dylan Wynn have legit claims to that position, but if we are talking the whole bay area there is also Byron Marshall, a rb out of Valley Christian in SJ. He is an absolute stud.
I also disagree with your statement of Ricky Lloyd at Concord being the best throwing qb. Obviously he puts up his stats, because of the offense they run there but I think any of the three young EBAL qb’s I listed up top are better passers, for sure Lockie and Houston are as I have seen both throw with my own eyes. Lockie may put up very impressive numbers this year given the MV spread offense. Obviously Houston won’t have huge numbers with the veer, but his numbers last year were solid and he makes very accurate throws.
Other then that rankings look good.
My EBAL predictions are as follows:
1. DLS
2. SRV
3. MV
4. Cal
5. Foothill
6. Granada
7. AV
8. Livermore
April 5th, 2010 at 4:16 pm
No Encinal, YV, or Miramonte on the top 15? Its a few teams that shouldnt be on that list(SL and Antioch). I like the list other than that. I would drop Berkeley, Logan, And Granada down a little and put Encinal and YV in the mix for SL and Antioch. Other than the Adkinson twins, Granada has nothing else and wouldnt be on this list if it wernt for those guys.
April 5th, 2010 at 4:25 pm
yeah i more meant Mcgovern best offensive player and was speaking more to east bay not bay area…yes i do believe renaud is probably best overall player in east bay just forget about DLS guys sometimes because overall team talent so great you forget about individual players…
agree to disagree on lloyd. he is a legitamate D1 caliber QB and could argue the same thing about MV QB’s as it is the offense they play in is a big reason for the inflated stats. as neither team really has much running game to speak of.
while i think houston is going to be a really good passing QB I am waiting to see him complete something other than curls on CB’s playing 10 yards off or streaks. he benefits greatly from 0 pressure and man to man coverage nearly entire game because of the great lineplay and running game. i think if you flip flop lloyd and houston from dls to concord you would not be speaking as highly about houston.
as for what MV and SRV has next year i agree both will have great qb’s i am sure. i just think lloyd being a returning has more experience than the other two from mv and srv.
i agree with your ebal predictions pretty close to what i have. foothill kind of that wildcard not sure what they got coming back and seemed to rely very heavily on mannion last year. but sweeney always ready to go.
how is cal’s QB, other than RB and one of wr’s not sure what else they return. all the big name guys are gone.
April 5th, 2010 at 4:35 pm
they are all very good qb’s, probably being too nitpicky…
we will see if ebal returns as dominate as last few years…while of course DLS is DLS..i do think MV takes a slight step back without nottingham and wilkerson those guys are tough to replace. SRV takes step forward but will they be better than last years MV team not too sure. foothill takes step back without mannion. Cal not sure what to make of them yet since it will be second year with new coach so may step forward or loss of talen too much and step back. i think granada steps forward as the atkingson twins move on. AV probably 2 steps back as they lost a lot of talent and looked very average in playoffs without QB and LB. if that was an indication might be tough year from them…livermore will take a few years to change the landscape their even if they made a great hire.
i don;t think they have a clear cut #2 team behind DLS this year we will see how other leagues do vs them as i think most play tough schedules against non league foes as most ebal teams do every year.
i think a little chink in armor after losing 3 teams in the 1st round of playoffs last year and really being pretty well controlled in all 3 losses especially considereing everyone was considered a favorite because all were the higher seed. ebal still the top league no doubt but with mval coming on stronger last year with more than just logan and bval as well, plus the rise of berekeley again may be a little more rounded this year.
top to bottom no argument but top of other divisions pretty close i think this year other than DLS of course. they are in there own class!

So why is Berkeley in the top 6? I don’t get it.
And what kind of ranking are we talking about? Looks like a 510/925 ranking to me. What if you included all NCS? Where would Eureka, Cardinal Newman, and Marin Catholic be? Or what if you included all Bay Area teams? Where would the WCAL teams be?
April 5th, 2010 at 5:04 pm
dont know enough about those teams to pass any judgement…but as far as redwood empire goes they looked amazing in d2 and 3 but not sure they still quite matchup against east bays top d1 teams…
i stil think d2 and d3further from d1 than some believe…why i only have 2 d2 teams in entire ranking….but i am sure a few might possibly rank in that 10-15 range. probably not much higher than that though
April 5th, 2010 at 5:07 pm
and in regards to b-high like i said..could be too high or too low with coaching issues..but talent at the school is there with right coach cant argue that..plus 4,000student enrollment how can u not be good.
April 5th, 2010 at 5:16 pm
de la salle, monte vista, san ramon and cal all have outstanding quarterbacks coming in.
How about the other ebal teams like amador, granada, livermore and foothill?
April 5th, 2010 at 5:54 pm
Anybody know who Eureka’s playing in the preseason in the fall? Thought I heard Castlemont, but not positive, for one of the games
April 5th, 2010 at 6:38 pm
Castlemont plays Eureka week 1 !!!
Coaching is my life not a hobby !!!
April 5th, 2010 at 7:04 pm
Scl- Eureka will open by hosting Piner then Castlemont. Eureka travels to Redding to play Shasta and the final preseason game will be in Ukiah.

Thanks Jb
April 5th, 2010 at 7:18 pm
@181
we’ve all been saying the same thing about Berkeley for years but they have only made it past the second round in the playoffs once (last season) in forever. And that was only because DI schools went to a 16 team playoff format.

Moving on. EBAL will be a battlefield 2-7.
R10, Jr., Joe how’s dls backfield shapin’ up? M-Cotton did very well Oaktown relays HH…switchin’ to O?
April 5th, 2010 at 8:26 pm
JB how do you think your new team Arroyo will do this year with you as the NEW head coach? I know you have some good pieces and some good athletes in place next year and with your success at Castlemont can we expect a league title? Best of luck to you next year man!
April 5th, 2010 at 9:14 pm
norcalpride you are right that Houston had more larger windows to throw to last year because most teams geared on stopping the run, but he threw more then just curl routes. He hit quite a few slants as well as showed great touch on the post routes making sure it was in a place that only his receiver could get the ball. He also has good arm strength on the deep throws. Also he moves decently for a guy his size. Will be interesting to see how he does this year with the loss of most of the great O-line last year. But Lloyd really seemed to underperform in big game situations. Again I just don’t think he is the best throwing qb in this area. But we will find out more once the season starts.
Chs1012- It’s been pretty quiet about DLS position competition this year. A lot of talent moving up so it should be interesting. A lot of people are pretty sure that lucas dunne will be one of the starting rb’s, I am not one of them however. I have always thought that Cotton has the ability to be a great RB. But they may decide to keep him focused more on defense. I actually would not be surprised if he was moved form safety to corner this year. I think with his size and speed the guy could be an absolute stud at the cornerback position.
April 5th, 2010 at 9:20 pm
also yes while in terms of talent I think SRV should be a favorite for second I am still unsure about the coach. It will be his second year and while last year not a lot was expected with the loss of many great players from the year before this year will be a different story. Bergman is one of the best offensive minds in the area so MV may jump up there and they did have some young skill players last year. Defensively I think they will probably struggle, but look for Jacob Welter to make an impact this year on both lines. He is a big kid with a good motor. Agree AV goes way down this year but should beat Livermore. Granada will try to make the playoffs and should be on the border again. Foothill is a year away from being a top team again. Cal High will have a lot of unknowns but I think they may surprise as they had a full year with this coach and his system. Expect them to be a very disciplined team this year.
April 6th, 2010 at 7:58 am
Renegades10, you seem to know a lot about the ebal.
Who will be stepping up at amador, livermore, foothill and granada at quarterback?
Will Cal be the suprise team in the ebal this year?
April 6th, 2010 at 9:31 am
No Encinal, YV, or Miramonte on the top 15? Its a few teams that shouldnt be on that list(SL and Antioch). I like the list other than that. I would drop Berkeley, Logan, And Granada down a little and put Encinal and YV in the mix for SL and Antioch. Other than the Adkinson twins, Granada has nothing else and wouldnt be on this list if it wernt for those guys
April 6th, 2010 at 10:49 am
The Bishop Odowd head football position HAS been quietly RE-opened.
Unfortunately as I and others on this board (and others) have predicted, the Dragon administration is quietly contacting other candidates they met with previously.
Something REALLY, REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLY smells about this whole thing.

Hey Chs1012……you say that my post #167 is air ball.
But you fail to mention or support WHY having a team coach/parent on the Odowd interview selection panel who also wants to be the new Defensive Coordiator IS actually a good idea.
Please try to back it up
April 6th, 2010 at 11:26 am
Good post Norcalprepfan. I agree with you on the majority of your poll, however i feel San Leandro and Washington are gonna find themselves in the top 5 by the end of next football season. San Leandro in what most consider a dissapointing 2009 campaign will only get better from those tough WCAL game experience last year they have alot coming back and always have athletes to pick and choose from. as Far as Washington goes they have been on the rise for the last three years and even though they lose QB Ross and all everything Cedric Lousi, I feel this team could make a run especially being dropped to D2. I dont think they would have scheduled 3 EBAL teams along with D.V. for there preseason if the cupboard was empty. Anyones thoughts on any other surprise teams?
April 6th, 2010 at 1:03 pm
I will be glad when the BOD position finally gets filled so everyone can move on to something else, but most likely when it does get filled everyone will have 300 posts worth of opinions on why whoever was hired shouldn’t have been. What is it about BOD that makes everyone so excited to see when things aren’t going perfectly for them? People claim they are so “sad” about what is happening to the players at BOD yet they claim the kids over there have no worth ethic, are whiner’s etc
April 6th, 2010 at 1:20 pm
Foothill doesn’t even have backup QB listed on last year’s roster. Job will probably have to go to JV QB moving up. No standout RBs either. Sweeney always does great job but will have his work cut out for him.
AV relied on Stancil/Turay for 99% of their offense, graduated all but a 2-4 starters and had better hope for their usual cup-cake preseason schedule to get some W’s. Patrick Gibbons can step in as QB. Has strong/accurate arm (drop back quarterback) and should have some capable receivers. (AV will continue policy of running the ball in all 3rd & long situations – so won’t really matter.) Don’t believe returning backs had more than 10 carriers for whole season but do have a power running back and some quick tailbacks.
Atkinson twins can’t carry Granada through EBAL. (Look at post-Foothill stats last season). Don’t know who will fill in for last year’s starting QB, but no one stepped up when he went out with injury last year.
April 6th, 2010 at 2:25 pm
ebftblwatcher-
as most of the regulars on this board would tell you i am a DLS guy. My knowledge about the overall EBAL is based more on what I know from exchanges on this and other boards with supporters of other EBAL schools as well as having watched them play against DLS at different levels. In other words I will know more about any returning starters coming back then guys who will be new starters this year. With regards to the question about the qb’s at the schools you listed i honestly have no idea. I only know about the two from MV and SRV from word of mouth and actually having seen the MV one play. However, I do usually have a general idea of the top players on each team and how many guys a team may have coming back. My predictions were based a lot on that as well as some knowledge about how the JV teams did last year. I do believe AV had a qb who played for Stancil when he was injured last year, who is coming back this year.
In regards to your other question, I do believe Cal could surprise this year. There were some who complained about their new coach last year, but to be honest he was thrown into a tough situation replacing a very popular coach who had turned the team around. This also happened rather late. So I think given the fact that most of the players will have been in his system for a year will bode well. I don’t know about their talent this year but they did have a tough frosh team so a year down the road they may be very good. But I can say that I think this Grizzlies team will be very disciplined given the football upbringing of the their coach at DLS.
April 6th, 2010 at 7:10 pm
Anybody know who will be some of the teams to beat in Div III in the fall? Does Marin Catholic, Alhambra, etc have key guys returning?
April 6th, 2010 at 7:18 pm
And how is this going to affect Washington, since their schedule is predominantly DI when they’re now DII?
April 6th, 2010 at 7:36 pm
I know that Encinal was very young last year. They had key sophomores and juniors on that team last year that played good. Alahambra loses a lot but they still have good young talent coming back this year. The big fullback was a junior last year. Miramonte has a good QB who was a soph. in 09 and BIG OL/DL coming back. Marin had a couple of good sophs. and juniors playing in the state game vs Serra. That will be the key for them to defend the NCS title. Don’t forget about Novato, they will be strong again this year. The DIII will be interesting this year with YV and Eureka coming down. But that might not stay the same. Eureka may go back up to DII.
April 6th, 2010 at 7:39 pm
for most teams if they want a shot at contending for a state bowl berth they will have to petition up a division.
April 6th, 2010 at 7:47 pm
Looks like DIII NCS is gonna be a dogfight..I know Ygnacio Valley has a good program, and Eureka coming off their strong campaign. Looking forward to the new season. I hope my Healdsburg team does well in the North Bay next year!
April 6th, 2010 at 8:17 pm
while that is true you need to petition up to go to a state bowl game…for most d2 teams that are d1 for bowl purposes there isn’t much point as none can beat DLS anyways…
So for them an NCS championship is just fine…for a few d3 schools i think they can be competitive in D2 like eureka petaluma and encinal…but are they going to just go for an NCS championship or bowl bid…i think you got to know what you can win and what you can’t…
in regards to Chris…yes with washington moving down that definately makes d2 interesting as they were an the semi’s of d1 last year and yes they play a d1 schedule i think it was posted on here already…3 ebal teams srv, cal, and av plus deer valley for non league…no d2 team can even come close to that strength of schedule…it will be interesting to see is d1 that much further ahead of d2 or not, how washington does could answer that.
April 6th, 2010 at 9:53 pm
Alhambra has two of the best players in the bay area coming back. RB/LB Jared Leaf and WR/DB Trevor Davis. If they can find a QB, they could be tough on offense.
April 7th, 2010 at 8:52 pm
Anybody think Phil Mickleson will take the Masters, even with the highly anticipated return of Tiger, and hot-streaking Els?
April 7th, 2010 at 9:39 pm
Alhambra has TREMENDOUS shoes to fill with the loss of Calhoun. Hopefully they can keep the machine going into 2010
April 8th, 2010 at 10:24 am
should be a good game between yv and alhambra this year for non-league..
April 8th, 2010 at 2:11 pm
lets keep stirring the pot here with pre-spring football which obviously could change greatly…
D1 projected playoff seeds…
#1 DLS – no debate
#2 Pitt – Mozee and tons of speed
#3 MV – still the 2nd best team year in year out in EBAL, but definately have to replace a lot.
#4 SRV – my projected step up team this year.
#5 Cal – hearing better things about them this year and coaches 2nd year at the helm.
#6 Logan – lots of talent returning and very good frosh and JV teams. plus 4000 student enrollment makes it pretty easy to reload
#7 Deer Valley – lose some talen but again big school with lots still returning.
#8 B-high – until they find a coach who knows?
#9 Foothill – must replace mannion and this is around where they were last year with him so dont see them much higher.
#10 san leandro – after a few down year believe they will get back into sooner than later.
#11 Heritage – schoool that keeps improving every year..so ill give them 2 seed bump from prior year plus no washington in d1.
#12 Amador Valley – while they lost a lot and sure struggled without Stencil in playoffs..dont see them not making playoffs after being a #3 seed..
next in…granada, college park, antioch, newark
April 8th, 2010 at 2:21 pm
D2 projection…
#1 Concord – returning great QB and RB.
#2 Washington – played with the best in d1 last year shouldn’t be much lower than this if in d2 now
#3 Casa Grande – great year last year…
#4 Montgomery – another team with solid year last year
#5 Los Lomas – great RB returning going to be very tough.
#6 Cardinal Newman – got to belive they opt up and got to believe they improve
#7 Hayward – starting to improve since won ncs title few years back…
#8 Clayton Valley – the ugglies are always uggly to play…were pretty young last year should be better this year.
#9 Pinole Valley – so much speed here and have been a force in the past in d2 playoffs.
#10 Arroyo – new coach new division i think they return to the playoffs..
#11 Rancho Cotate – dont know much about…but were in playoffs last year.
#12 Windsor – see above…
if anyone can shed some more light on redwood empire teams would probably help…
just out…mt diablo, alameda, carillo
April 8th, 2010 at 4:05 pm
What about Mt. Diablo and Ethan Morrow? And what do you project for D3?
April 8th, 2010 at 4:07 pm
Concord could look a lot like MV last year; great QB coming back, but the leading wide receivers lost to graduation.
April 9th, 2010 at 9:45 am
Last week a few people on this board (me included) mentioned facts that the Odowd football coaching search had spun out of control, mostly due to the fact that a team parent/coach has been part of the interview panel and this person DOES want to be the Defensive Coordinator for the new head coach once chosen.
Well now of today’s news, Brian Hamilton of Concord is no longer a candidate for the Odwod job after pulling out from consideration. That makes Longero, a collegiatge assistant and Hamilton (could be more coaches too) that have officially taken their name out.
WORSE yet, the team parent/coach in question at Odowd is now PUSHING for the Dragon administration to name him as the new head football coach!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sad day for a once very proud football program.
Not only should the Dragon administration continue its review of excellent head coaching candidates but they should tell the current team parent/coach in the middle of this cauldron that his services are no longer needed, and that IF the yet-to-be-named new Dragon head coach wants to even interview him for an assistant coaching position, that will be determined by the new head coach at a later date, and that the team parent/coach in question will no longer be part of the interview selection panel or the process.
The kids and parents playing football for the Dragons should stand up and be counted before they get snookered badly
April 9th, 2010 at 10:02 am
As the O’Dowd head football coach search plays out, the school administration is looking worse (read more incompetent) each day, and Coach Perenon may be fortunate separating from the situation. Who knows, perhaps Coach Perenon was the one truly holding things together, and without his leadership…all heck breaks loose. The right person for the job may just be a plumber…if you know what I mean.
April 9th, 2010 at 11:49 am
Couple of items to circle back on:
1. I asked Chs1012 to please Support his position on Why the team parent/coach in question that wants to be the new Def Coord and the response from Chs1012 has been TOTAL SILENCE…Deafening SILENCE!
2. Odowd has had over 60 Applicants for the head football job, they have had their pick of the bunch, but to no avail.
3. If the team parent/coach in the midst of this whirlpool ends up being the head coach, this will go down as one of the most backwards and un———–ably bad judgement calls in years at the high school level
April 9th, 2010 at 3:06 pm
Norcalpride, thats pretty solid predictions, except I don’t feel Pinole Valley will be that strong, yes they have some speed, but lost alot of playmakers, and there are 16 teams in the playoffs. I know this sounds biased and it is….but Alameda will make it, we return an all league 1st team QB and RB, and will have a solid line both off/def. With the additions and losses in DII, it will be an interesting season and bracket.

RedWoodz………
At this moment I do not have any verified inside info other than what I (and others) have been able to nail down as mentioned in earlier posts.
1. The names of outstanding coaches listed on here by me and others that have either pulled out of the Odowd job or flat out turned them down have been verified
2. More than 60 applicants for the job has been verified
3. A certain team parent/coach ON the interview panel, who also wants to be the new Def Coord and/or Head Coach HAS Been Verified by multiple sources
4. The Dragon administration contacting coaches on their 2nd or 3rd wave down their list HAS been verified
5. At this point anything is possible and I don’t want to put specific names out there without proof
6. But, I’ve heard of HAAL, EBAL, BSAL and MDUSD area head coaches or coordinators that are still interested in the position at Odowd
*** Any news on the Berkeley job?
April 12th, 2010 at 10:33 pm
coach sims from st liz, current coach on the staff interviewed thur. from what i heard those 2 and coach t from encinal was the top 3 coaches to interview tomorrow and a new coach will b annouced by the end of the week. hopefully that somebody will be officially hiredby tomorrow nite
April 13th, 2010 at 4:14 am
Wow, Perenon didn’t make the cut? Committee must not have liked how things ended at BOD. Simms would make a good coach. He’s got NCS championships. Can’t beat that. Done a great job with very little.
April 13th, 2010 at 8:36 am
Bhsfan: thank you for the Berkeley status update and that’s very interesting that Perenon from Odowd did not make the final cut.
A blogger on another board is saying that Odowd will soon name that Odowd parent/coach in question as the new head coach.
If that is the case, it’s inconceivable that this happened at Odowd, given all of the great coaches that applied for the job, but were subsequently turned off by the certain parent/coach in question wrongly inserting himself into the situation by insisting on being the new Def Coordinator, while ALSO sitting as an active member on the Interview Panel.
Just when you think you’ve seen everything in the coaching business, something LIKE THIS might happen.
Shockingly backwards and unbelievable.

When is De La Salle gonna stop hiding from Grant in Sacramento?
May 20th, 2010 at 5:52 pm
That’s a ridiculous question. Grant is an excellent team/ program, but largely ALL of DLS non-conference games are against teams as much or more highly regarded than Grant. Last year: #1 team in country; #1 or 2 team in FL; and Serra, a very good team that is comparable to Grant. This year: #1 (by far) team in NV (8 D1 recruits this year), Serra again, and St. Mary’s, also a very comparable team to Grant (both had 11-1 records — 2 common opponents they beat by similar margins). There are LOTS of teams that want to schedule with DLS and DLS can’t accommodate everyone, but they don’t back down from anyone.
May 21st, 2010 at 12:29 am
I have to go with Bishop Gorman on this one!
DE la salle lost terron ward and tyler anderson … but they still got solid D ..
i think it will be hard for the Spartans to replace terron ward and tyler anderson but they will get better as the season goes on…
good luck
I cant wait until Bishop Gorman plays De La Salle
P.S I want to see Dylan Wynn and blake Dominate on the defensive side this year.. My expectations are very high when it comes to those two players….. GO Spartans!

besides crushing de LA SALLE 30-6 AND BEATING THEM IN CALF 23-21 DON BOSCO BEAT AN EXCELLENT PRATTVILLE ALA TEAM LAST YEAR 35-24.. DON BOSCO COACH MAY BE ONE OF THE NATIONS BEST,ASK DE LA SALLES’ COACHES??? BOTH VICTORIES OVER DE LA SALLE WERE WITHOUT TWO STARTERS???? DE LA SALLE CAN BEAT BG,BUT THEY BETTER BE READY AND INTENSE AS BG WILL BE VERY FIRED UP. I LIKE DE LA SALLE AND WISH THEM WELL.

DE la has been downfor a few years and they still stay above par and dominate teams in cali. wait until de la gets some top notch D1 players and i gurantee Don bosco wouldnt have no 30-6 victory.. Last year DEla should have beat them if it wasnt for so many fumbles.. and De la should have beaten the team from flordia if they stopped the 2 point conversion

Bird eye,Don Bosco ran the ball down dls throat in their 23-21 victory at dls. Their 1st string rb was out and they were missinG both starting guards. the #2 guy ran 25 times for 150 yards. They beat up dls in the 2nd half. their 2003 team would have killed dls.. i also have seen both teams play for the last 7 years and Don Bosco beats team up and plays harder in the late stages of a game. dls does NOT BEAT DON BOSCO. Unless you have seen them you don’t know ,i do. This year though they may have a probleM because they lost 33 players of which 10 got div 1 scholorships.. LAST YEAR THEY WERE ALSO MISSING TWO STARTERS ON OFFENSE AND DESTROYED DLS,NO EXCUSES.
June 9th, 2010 at 11:48 am
Bird eye appears to duck the truth. He makes statements that are not valid and how many times did he see Bosco play?? Coulda, shoulda don’t win games and neither do excuses that are not based in fact. no spin zone pal.
June 9th, 2010 at 12:28 pm
bill gunn i admire your enthusiasm for Don Bosco. However, you cannot judge previous DLS teams based on the last two years. The 2003 team was one of the most talented teams to ever come through DLS. 2003 Bosco would not kill 2003 DLS. I doubt either team would kill the other. I hope the two programs can meet up again. DLS is on an upswing for at least the next two years, but doubt that they will meet then. Congrats on the two wins, but if you think there is no way DLS beats Bosco ever, you have another thing coming.
June 9th, 2010 at 3:14 pm
Great reply. Actually Bosco has been a real power since Greg Toal took over in 2000. Bosco 2003 team had,now listen,7 All -State players on it. Had they played dls that year they would have won the game clearly,IMHO. They were ranked #2 in 2003 and since that time have become more impressive. If you read all i have said you will notice i base what i say not on 2 games, rather, some facts and viewing many games across America. I saw both games against dls and i saw 7 of Bosco’s games in 2003. i like dls,but this bosco group are nasty, fair players who are relentless. This year though they may have a problem as they lost 33 and 10 div 1 players. Thank you for your gentlemans response..
June 10th, 2010 at 9:55 pm
the DLS 2003 had an all-american wide receiver in Cameron Colvin, along with four other players who received scholarships to Oregon, another D-1 wide receiver to Illinois. Many of these guys went both ways. Then we had a LB/TE Parker Hanks who received a ton of attention from D-1 schools for football, but chose to play baseball instead. Several linemen who played for the national champ Cal rugby teams along with a lineman who played for Harvard. And then a starting junior qb who also received a d-1 scholarship.
And to top it off the team was missing it’s all-american WR Colvin for the first five games of the season. Jackie Bates who was a starting RB/DB was out for almost the entire season with an ankle injury so in stepped the late Terrance Kelly who was a stud LB/TE and hadn’t played RB in two years and he went on to have an outstanding season at the RB position. On top of this the starting D-1 junior qb Kevin Lopina went out with an ACL injury in the second quarter of the nationally televised game against Evangel Christian of LA and the backup qb stepped in and led the team for the rest of the season. This team, according to Lad, may have been his most talented team ever in the history of his program.
June 10th, 2010 at 9:58 pm
also the 2003 DLS defense recorded six shutouts and allowed a total of sixty-five points for the whole season.
June 10th, 2010 at 10:05 pm
that was a loaded team..best team i have ever seen…
but isn’t it the DLS faithful that claim they do more with less…They pride themselves on less talent but get more out of them and play with a sense of togetherness…
like i always say…dls no doubt the best coached team around…but it is ridiculous when the fans claim they do it with less talent…name an east bay team that decorated???
June 11th, 2010 at 3:42 am
norcalfball…eh what happened after that team? still winning NCS titles, won two state titles but until this upcoming year where are the big name players? dls supporters understand that they get talent, but its more that people make it sound like DLS is loaded all the time with blue chippers. there have been several years since 2003 where I felt that some NCS teams were more talented then DLS. Pitt 2004 comes to mind. but DLS still kept going on. the 2008 state game against CC. No way was DLS even close to the talent level of the Huskies. but they played their hearts out and the coaches did a great job of shutting down CC’s high-octane offense to give the kids a chance even though they lost a one score game. the 2003 team is not the norm it would be the exception. if all DLS teams were as loaded as 2003 the streak would still be going.
June 11th, 2010 at 9:32 am
Renegades10,
Who do you think you are fooling? DLS continually has more talented kids than any school in the east bay. For heaven sakes, you have more than 100(!) boys who show up for freshman football, each and every year; many who come from all over Contra Costa & Alameda County. Why can’t you DLS alumni & supportors admit that DLS is a football factory, plain and simple. I don’t have an issue with it, other than when people like you continually deny it and say “its all about the coaches and the system.”
I love watching DLS football for what it is, which is to say, an annual all star team made up of blue chip athletes than no other school in the east bay could ever hope to assemble.
June 11th, 2010 at 10:07 am
good stuff. 2003 bosco team was voted best team “ever” in n.j. that may not appear to be much, but in the 40′s,50,60′s and the last 10 that is an accomplishment that they can be proud of. you should have read what the dls coaches said about bosco after two defeats, especially 30-6 beating which i saw. dls never new what hit them and no match at all. that 2003 dls team was indeed a good one but i still believe that if bosco played dls over the last 10 years, bosco wins 7 of 10. that is based on seeing both team play at least 15 time over 10 years. pratteville would would have beaten dls too.
June 11th, 2010 at 10:23 am
bill gunn… who plAYS FOOTBALL IN THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY… U GUYS SHOULD OF LOST IN 09. IF DLS DIDNT FUMBLE THE GAME AWAY.. SO RELAX THERE BUDDY.. plus this year everybody knows de la was rusty in the start of the season. when they couldnt find a solid qb till about weak 5. so hold your horses there pal
June 11th, 2010 at 12:58 pm
That’s a good point. HERE’S 4, bosco, bergen catholic,st jos’s of montvale and st peters prep of jersey city. after that, average. all of those could beat dls. well, like i said i saw the game both times, did you??? Now look at the stats of both game and there is no question plus bosco came bacK and beat the crap out of dls in 2nd half in 08 and did that AFTER THAT LONG FLEIGHT…… Bosco was missing 3 Starters in 08 and destroyed them last year missing 2 STARTERS.. No, Bosco beat them and was the better team both years.
June 11th, 2010 at 9:13 pm
you sound stupid. 4 teams better then DE la salle in the state of new jersey.. what are you gonna tell me next new york has 4 teams that can beat de la too?. and please de la salle was missing there qb this year! a key when running the veer option attack. and ohh woww. de la salle was missing a couple of statersboth year two so dont go there.. in 08 de la should of won but lost it. you guys kicked there ass in 09– but 00 they would beat ya, 01 same story was well as 03.. 04 u guys.. 05 de la 06 de la 07 de la .. de la salle would beat you guys 7-10 times.. and i can give u wayy more then just 4 teams in the great state of california that can beat any 4 teams in new jersey any dam day. so get your facts straight talking that new jersey stuff, stick to basetball stuff. de laa was reBUilding. you guys were REloaded.. and we can still stay up to par with you guys..
June 14th, 2010 at 5:08 pm
Sorry i sound stupid but did you see dls play Bosco both times?? Have you ever seen the other teams i mentioned play?? How many times in the last 7 years did you seen Bosco play??? Bosco was ranked #2 in 2003 and i saw that team play 4 times and dls 2003 play 4 times too. now,if you saw all those teams play as i did,and still say what you just said, sir, you are an idiot. I don’t think you saw any of them play, therefore, you really don’t know what your talking about and appear very foolish indeed. How do you like me now since all may reconsider anything you ever say on this blog again…..
June 14th, 2010 at 5:57 pm
dfal1… i am fooling no one. has DLS had teams that were vastly superior and talented compared to anyone else in the bay area? sure no argument there. But since that 03 team, when has there been this big name player? i’ve seen plenty more local kids get hyped then recent DLS players. Of course now the talent is on the upswing again. but in previous years not so much. the coaching and system comments come from when they beat teams that have more talent which includes at the national level. why did they beat poly twice?
it also goes to how kids develop. it was not uncommon for those all-star studded freshman teams you refer to, to lose two or three games a year. and then they get up to varsity and go undefeated. so what happened there in between frosh and senior year?
and where were the blue chip athletes in 04 when they tied clayton valley? how about 05 when they barely beat San Leandro in the NCS title game. 06 when they were handily beat by canyon. even the 07 state champs had less talent then their CC counterparts and I already talked about that 08 rematch.
June 14th, 2010 at 8:28 pm
Now those are good comments that make sense.
June 15th, 2010 at 7:50 pm
It also appears that CALPREPSHATER is,among other things, not prepared to back any of his statements or his capricious remark calling me stupid?? He’s a small time weasel of a gunslinger, who makes arbitrary statements that have no value or facts to back them up. It’s like saying dls can’t and won’t beat bg and never having seen either play. Ihope dls walks all over Bishop Gorman.Oh,CALPREPSHATER,did you play football???
June 16th, 2010 at 10:44 am
Man up weasel and clarify your remarks Calprepshater. Hopefully, you won’t stay in the hole of denial.
June 17th, 2010 at 6:41 am
It appears the weasel gunslinger will stay in his hole.
June 17th, 2010 at 7:43 am
your an idoit. bill gunn. i have played football and have a vast knowledge of the game. your over hear hoping on the bandwagon of don bosco coming over here saying don bosco has the same level and stature as a DLS program. PLEASEEEE 2 wins againest and you are comparing 10 years of DOMINAT DLS FOOTBALL to your lil newjersey high school football? california its where its really at. Your a lil too old and dumb for me to really start chatting it up with you about real knowledge
June 17th, 2010 at 7:44 am
hahaha and weasel? thats the best you got? something a 40 year old man would say (shaking my head) lets talk football and no trash talk
June 17th, 2010 at 2:51 pm
Look what it took to get you out of the hole… You still never responded to my questions and therefore have shown everybody on this blog that you still don’t know what your talking about. I gave examples, saw both teams play many times and all you do is spew anger and resentment?? You can’t give any examples of why you make statements and therefore you should be quiet. Oh,weasel, the name fits you to a tee. Show your writting skills to your teacher or better, you Dad.
June 18th, 2010 at 7:09 am
hahahahhahahahahhahahahahhahahhahahahhah your 40-50 years old. old man its a new game out here…. you think weasel is bothering me? it only makes me laugh and shows me you were the guy that always got picked on at practice lol. i already gave your a breif statement you cant compare 2 DLS losses againest DON BOSCO and say DON BOSCO has a better 10 year SPAN then DLS . DLS plays teams much more tougher in the 10 year span the BOSCO, california teams VS NEW JERSEY TEAMS BE REAL!!!! and yess i seen don Bosco play 6 times in the last 2 years. so you can shut up about me not knowing anything. and i am just typing really fast and not really taking my time to fix my gramatical errors so if i had to go to my “dad” about my grammer it would probally be your old self since your taking this really serious lol. relax take a chill pill, we all know you dont know what your talking about and is really bias
June 18th, 2010 at 11:57 am
Wow…..weasel has come out and put up a weak defense that i run all over. I played football at Alabama and am younger and tougher than you think. WHO DID YOU SEE BOSCO PLAY AS I DON’T BELIEVE YOU…. Also, your use of the English language is that of a handicapped child. Nothing is biased that i say, rather an opinion based on watching many games outside of your playpen. I’am done with you as i no longer choose to major in minor things with minor bloggers.
June 19th, 2010 at 5:05 am
hahahahahhahahahahahahhahahahahha!! let me guess you were the quarterback for alabama too?! huh.. get out of here your full of it
June 19th, 2010 at 8:14 am
Weasel, you still won’t tell us what teams you saw Bosco play?? How about Pratteville h.s. in Alabama??? Your a liar and will not answer my questions, therefore you MUST leave. YOU MADE STATEMENTS THAT YOU WON’T BACK UP and are a coward. Good by WEASEL……
June 19th, 2010 at 9:17 am
Forget DLS MACK is BACK!
June 19th, 2010 at 3:44 pm
Go Mack… DLS BEATS GORMAN.
June 20th, 2010 at 1:10 am
Gunn & CalPrep
Both schools are on the top of HS football in America. Bosco won both games home and away. DLS should have won the home game but that fumble wasn’t picked up in the second half by a DLS and that would have stuck the proverbial knife in Bosco’s back. Also, the 4-6 punts that averaged about 14 yards didn’t help in the game giving Bosco short fields to their offense in a comeback mode.
Gunn – I have only seen Bosco in the two games but to state that you think that NJ has at least 4 teams better than DLS or CA schools for that matter year in and year out. That statement makes takes your validity away. Southern CAL has at least 10 teams as good as DLS. Bosco’s 2009 team was more mature and loaded than DLS and they might have even beat the best So Cal teams but DLS wasn’t the same team in Nov that Bosco saw in Sept. I still think for 09 purposes Bosco was the better team. The rest of the years in question I would say that you’re comparing apples to oranges and it will never be solved. Since 1983, You can’t argue that DLS is the most accomplished HS team in the country and that is a fact just check the records and banners.
That is my take on this Bosco vs DLS blog
June 20th, 2010 at 1:30 am
DFAL1
My nephew played on this years SRV undefeated freshman team. In the next two to three years they should be NCS champs right? Probably not because DLS will probably win it. Not because of tranfers as there will be very few if any and all schools have some tranfers. It will be because of the coach, The program and committment put in by these freshman for the next three years. This of course is mixed with the some very talented players of course. Keep in mind that 86% of the students at DLS came from catholic grade schools not public schools. Their parents had them ear marked for a Catholic High School since they were 5-6 years old. DLS has great advantages by having success in all of their sports programs which obviously helps draw kids pointed in that direction but I strongly believe that 3 reasons listed above puts them over the top for winning championships.
Just my perception as I had witnessed my son change once he put on the Spartan uniform as a freshman. His attitude and committment level changed regarding his effort and training habits. He will not play in college due to his size but he certainly excelled at DLS. Agree or disagree, it’s just my perception as I witnessed the program and expectations first hand at DLS.
June 20th, 2010 at 7:40 am
BamBam, great post.. I don’t think i said Cal schools, rather 4 schools from jersey that beat dls last year. Jersey is not a power state. They were ranked # 16 of 50. The first game against dls, bosco was getting beat 21-7 at the half,remember,21-7 and dls could prevent a power running game in the 2nd half….. Bosco came and with a 2nd string rb,who rushed for 150 yqrds 0n 25 carries and beat up dls in that 2nd half… Also i have seen Bosco play for 10 years and dls for 7. I’am originally from Pratteville,Ala and saw Bosco beat up a big, fast, tough Pratteville team and was very, very impressed.I also saw dls beat Evangel Christian and was also impressed. Great offensive line surge that was really in sync and low. Based on all the games i’ve seen in my travels as a scout, i think i know from whence i speak. That said, your post shows some knowledge, but lack of seeing many teams play outside of Calf. Bosco, has lost 33 players of which 10 were div.1…… I saw every Cal playoff game and Prattville and Bosco would have beaten all of them. Cal was in the top 4 states for fooball and have great players.
June 20th, 2010 at 7:51 am
I also agree that dls has been the most storied team in the country. That said, there out of STATE LOSSES has diminished that. Since 2005 Bosco only lost one out of state game. I think dls has lost 4-5 out of state games.
June 20th, 2010 at 8:02 am
lOST 4-5 OUT OF STATE.
June 20th, 2010 at 8:36 am
I have scouted Bosco and other teams.. Their out of state record is 12-1 since 2004.
June 20th, 2010 at 8:44 am
Boscos’ one loss was 17-10 to St. Zavier of Ohio. There were very real concerns that a coach from Jersey had sent films, not authorized,to St. Zavier in advance. Bosco was at the one yard line and time ran out.
June 20th, 2010 at 12:30 pm
Gunn
For most of us in california, So Cal is out of State. This is due to the population and miles between Nor Cal and So Cal. I believe Bosco could go that amount of distance and plY IN 3 DIFFE
June 20th, 2010 at 12:31 pm
Gunn Sorry for this correction
For most of us in california, So Cal is out of State. This is due to the population and miles between Nor Cal and So Cal. I believe Bosco could go that amount of distance from Concord to Long Beach and hplY IN 3 DIFFE
June 20th, 2010 at 12:32 pm
I will try later as the cpu keeps entering prior to finishing my thought.
June 20th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
Good point as Cal is a huge state.. What’s the final score between dls and Gorman??
June 20th, 2010 at 3:16 pm
Also, dls is 0-2 vs jersey,0-1 vs fla,o-1 vs wash st, 1-0 vs OHIO,1-0 vs LOUSIANNA AND 1-0 vs Honalulu?? THST’S A COMBINED 3 WINS 4 LOSSES??? FAR CRY FROM 12-1 LIKE BOSCO.
June 20th, 2010 at 3:20 pm
ACCORDING TO LEO LOPOZ AT DLS, THAT’S UNHEARD OF..
June 20th, 2010 at 4:06 pm
Bosco may be 12-1 against teams from other states but let’s look closer at who they have played. They are 4-1 against teams from CA, AL, and OHIO which is very, very good. But the rest are 6-0 against PA and 2-0 against NY. PA does have some solid squads but three of those wins came against the Valley Forge Military Academy who isn’t even close to being a league champ let alone a state champ. And NY football is not very good overall. The teams that DLS has played from out of state are at the top of their state rankings and most were nationally ranked teams and won a state championship the year before they played or the year they did play. Out of the teams Bosco has played in that 12-1 record how many were nationally ranked?
June 20th, 2010 at 4:32 pm
Good point as Valley Forge and Cardinal o’Hara are not much at all. St.Anthonys’,# 1 in N.Y. AND nationally RANKED,Prattville,# 1-2 in Alabama and nationally ranked and St joes of Phila was # 1-2 in Pa and also nationally ranked. Now what teams go out and play out of state competition like that??? We can play devils advocate all day with Bosco, but they never schedule to win, rather take on all commers and play the best teams they can.. What teams would chase dls and go across the nation to play them??? Then, not gloat, but play them a second time and destroy them?? Not many, maybe none. They tried in 2003 but the state and league would not let them. THEY HAVE, WIN OR LOSE, ALL MY RESPECT FOR GUTS AND FOR PLAYING,FOR THE MOST PART, THE THE BEST TEAMS THEY CAN FIND.
June 20th, 2010 at 4:33 pm
Mistake ,Bosco also beat Centerville,in Ohio 21-0.. So they are 13-1.
June 20th, 2010 at 5:18 pm
I knew about prattville’s quality long before they played bosco along with the teams i mentioned from CA and Ohio which also included the centerville win. but in looking at the rankings from the years they played, st. anthony’s was nationally ranked the year after the series with bosco stopped but not the two years they did play. I also found no national ranking for st. joes of philly for the two years that they played bosco. they were ranked back in 2003 right behind dls and bosco. so obviously they had been a quality program same for st/ anthony’s. but does the level of competition at the times that bosco played those teams, measure up to the quality of the teams DLS played at the same time? i’m not sold on that.
June 20th, 2010 at 6:07 pm
Renegades 10, will talk again and i enjoyed our back and forth. You appear to be a quality guy who knows some football.. Will talk agin and the best. Now, does dls beat Gorman??? Bosco opens against Gilman of Maryland who has a big time running q.b.. will be there and then down to St.Thomas,in Ft Lauderdale.
June 20th, 2010 at 7:47 pm
Ren 10, you never replied as to bosco efforts to come across country and chase after dls or their willingness to travel and play anybody anywhere… What other teams do that and are 13-1?? just a thought since nobody on any blog appears to want to address that or praise them for it. Prattville wants no part of them and would not go to Jersey for a rematch….
June 23rd, 2010 at 12:44 am
it is a fair point. i would point out that DLS has shown a willingness to play anyone even when knowing that they may not have the better team. in 2004 when the streak was broken de la salle went up to bellevue to play a team that had specifically waited for that year to play DLS knowing that was when they would have their best team. Most everybody knew that DLS would have a very significant drop-off from that outstanding 2003 team (although nobody guessed at how much it truly did drop off). it also happened during the streak when DLS did look for the bigger challenges when they could have sat back like a certain team in North Carolina did and just let the streak grow by playing the local competition. Instead they went down to SoCal (remember this was a time when high school teams traveling across the country to play another school was unheard of) and played the Mater Dei’s and Poly’s along with others. They traveled to Hawaii and took on a team from Louisiana. And even though those streak talented teams are a distant memory they still continue to challenge the kids against great teams no matter the result.
June 24th, 2010 at 7:51 am
ren 10,good points and i enjoy our talks. you far exceed cal preps and have good command of what you say and have examples to back it up. went up to boston college and saw some east coast teams do 7 0n 7′s. bosco qb will be all state and all amer. he’s going to pitt. their small, but fast and very, very well coached, but lost everybody. they play a team named Gilman from maryland that has darius jennings,a running qb that may be the best i’ve seen??
July 13th, 2010 at 6:53 am
De La Salle in the past has only had a running game but in the next few years because of new QB’s coming up from the program they will be more balanced in the future. Which will make them a very formitable team in the future.
July 13th, 2010 at 3:55 pm
while it is true that most years they have relied on a running game as the primary source of offense, from the 2000 season until present, they have had two qb’s that received D-1 scholarships in Matt Guttierez and Kevin Lopina. Both had great arms and Matt G. was at the national elite 11 camp his senior year. Matt G. was a starter for three years and Lopina for two. During those years especially during Matt’s years and Lopina’s junior year the playbook was opened up much more because of the talents at qb and wide reciever. That’s always how Lad has done it. The veer option is always the base but they tailor the offense to the skill sets they have that year. as you said this year they will throw more as they return two receivers and a great qb. Also during their 2007 run, Lad used the platoon system to utilize MacGillivray’s arm and Blake Wayne’s speed. Mike had a fantastic year throwing the ball.
July 13th, 2010 at 4:04 pm
here are Mike’s stats from 2007. He threw for 1,149 yards with 20 td’s to one interception. He had a completion rate of 71%. Granted for most schools that throw the ball a lot that isn’t much but those are pretty solid numbers.
July 13th, 2010 at 8:48 pm
Looking at the 2010 season, does anybody have a decent view of how the leagues look and who will be suprisingly good and shockingly bad?
ACCAL
BFL
BSAL
DFAL
DVAL
EBAL
HAAL
MCAL
MVAL
North Bay
These are the issues of interest for me heading into the fall
July 13th, 2010 at 8:51 pm
i recently looked at pass rates for DLS going back to 2004- they consistently throw the ball aprox 23% of the time over a years worth of games. This was the case Macgilvray’s senior year as well. It will be interesting to see if Lad throws more this year.
July 13th, 2010 at 10:37 pm
you also take into account that DLS hardly throws when up by a huge margin that comes into play too.
July 14th, 2010 at 11:37 am
ill take a stab at it..
ACCAL – favorite Berkeley…with 4,000 plus students in a lower class league they should be every year…
sleeper – Alameda…they have been slowly moving in the right direction..not sure they are ready to take berkeley out, but b-high did lose a ton plus their coach…
BFL – Salesian…since best was their they will continue to have the best talent in a very weak ovreall league..
sleeper- st elizabeth…but like i said doubt salesian doesn’t win it.
BSAL – encinal…they have dominated the league of late and don’t see that changing
sleeper – st mary’s..always got to watch out for private schools…st mary’s have had some good team here and there so never know.
DFAL – los lomas – return one of the best rb’s in the esast bay…return to a contender again this year
sleeper – miramonte and campo – they are always a tough out…
DVAL – always the most competitive division and this year is no different…going with concor and super qb lloyd…
sleeper – CV always brings it and they are ugly to play (no pun intended)…yv steps back after graduating most of talent…always have to be prepared for CP and that offense.
EBAL – drumroll please….DLS
sleeper – well there are no sleepers because nobody is beating dls this year…but i think srv and granada are the only teams that take a big step forward this year…everyone else maintains status quo or drops a few notches..
haal – san leandro..got to go with perennial favorites with huge enrollment…but man has this league been on a downhill slide over the past decade…
sleeper – o’dowd..never sleep on private schools and from what i hear doing well…arroyo could be a tough out as well hear good things about what they are doing, but i dont see them taking league yet..
MCAL – marin catholic..any doubt…
sleeper – novato..not much of a sleeper since they are the only other decent team in league
MVAL – over past so many years typically a two horse race and i am sure it will be the same this year…ill take washington after there great run last year and the return of carter…
sleeper – logan but at 4000 students not really one, but i hear they got 2 soph at qb that might mean a rebuilding year…american – supposedly did real well in scrimmage vs foothill…wasn’t there so i assume half of team wasn’t there…but who knows…after that weak division other than newark every 5 or so years…
north bay – cardinal newman…been down for too long i am going for a turnaround to the top this year…
sleeper – montgomery (although prob favorite) and rancho cotate…
pick me apart i am sure you all will with your favorite teams!!!
July 14th, 2010 at 4:06 pm
clayton valley just lost all hope having 4 players arrested for assaulting and robbing some 11 year olds…
July 14th, 2010 at 5:22 pm
WATCH OUT FOR OINOLE VALLEY THEY WILL REALLY EXPLOSIVE THIS YEAR. THEY HAVE A JUNIOR NAME JAMES LEWIS. GAME CHANGER
July 14th, 2010 at 6:18 pm
heard it was only two players arrested so far and they are looking for third right now who also is on the football team. what a sad day. very surprised this happened on a Herc Pardi coached team.
July 14th, 2010 at 6:32 pm
How could you possibly blame the coach for this?? Did it happen during football practice?
July 14th, 2010 at 6:48 pm
i am not blaming the coach in anyway. i was expressing my surprise that kids coached by Pardi would go and do something like this. He has always and will continue to be one of the classy coaches in high school football in this area and for years his players have respected him and you never hear about one of his players let alone three go and do something like this.
July 14th, 2010 at 9:38 pm
Norcalfootball, that was a good initial league breakdown.
About the Clayton Valley players being arrested, it has nothing to do in any way with the coach.
The players are responsible for their actions, them and them alone.
July 14th, 2010 at 10:27 pm
N Cal,
good breakdown…I would not rule out Foothill in the EBAL…Their O line was all sophomores and juniors..a decent QB this year and they could be competitive…as a side note, what a tragedy with those misguided delinquents from CV..thank goodness no one was seriously hurt by these morons!
July 15th, 2010 at 9:30 am
I don’t CARE who the coach is….this is an act of stupidity, why some highschool kids would rob and assault an 11 yr old ! KillerD , your absolutely right these kids are responsible for their own actions and no one else.
July 15th, 2010 at 9:37 am
I was at CCC last night and was able to watch Berkeley, Arroyo, Mack , and Kennedy (Richmond) at coach Zo’s mini camp. Mack looks awfully good, really good run game and a solid, fast, physical defense. Mack and Arroyo mixxed it up , that was interesting to see…I mean parents came out the stands! Berkeley was without Isaiah but they still looked good, their defense was fast n physical. Arroyo is coming together under JB, and will make some noise in HAAL, I don’t think they’re ready for a league title;but , they’re moving in the right direction, and Kennedy can make some noise in the BSAL, they got some big lineman and some playmakers on both sides of the ball. Tonite is the last nite and it would have been great if my Alameda Hornets were going, would have got some good work in.
July 15th, 2010 at 9:51 am
That is a sick thing those kids from Clayton Valley did. Robbing and assaulting 11 year olds? Reflects on the home not the coach. If kids do things like that its on them and there parents.
Island02,
Do you think your Hornets can beat Berkeley this year? You guys are returning some solid players and I thought you guys had a good chance last year to take them down. I think you guys should finish in top 3 in you league this year considering the success you had last year and what you have coming back.
July 15th, 2010 at 10:11 am
ACCAL
1. Berkeley-Deep playoff run last year 2. Alameda- Returning QB and RB
2. Alameda- Good QB and RB returning. They will surprise everyone
BSAL
1. Encinal- Returning lots of skilled players and a HUGE lineman
2. St. Patricks- Competive year in and year out. Good RB with big OL
DFAL
1. Los Lomas – Sold RB returning and always good down the stretch. Good line
2. Miramonte– Big Line and good QB. Also have some solid WR with good hands
EBAL
1. De La Salle- Good all across the board. Another state championship is in sight for them.
HAAL
1. San Leandro- Always have good athletes to go with a good line.
2. Hayward- Good athletes returning this year. Hayward maybe back!
MVAL
1. Washington- Tough teams every year
2. Logan- Always competitive with a tough defense and strong run game
OAL
1. Mack- Hungry and good athletes across the board. Lots of returning players ready to win.
2. Tech- Even with the loss of the big three they are ready to compete for another silver bowl.
July 15th, 2010 at 10:40 am
Mandown good call on St. Pats I think they’ll be very good this year Stud RB coming back.
July 15th, 2010 at 11:25 am
let talk about the fine football play at CCC yesterday
i like the big back and cb at (jfk)MAC had some speedsters Arroyo looks like a work in progress
B- high got a few weapons
July 15th, 2010 at 12:25 pm
Mandown, you and NorCal have some really good predictions with valid comments. Can Alameda finally beat Berkeley? This will definately be a MONSTER GAME!I feel this will be our best year aside from maybe 2007. With the players we have returning we have some very good varsity experience and skill. I’m not going to call it;but, I can say it will be one of the better games of the year and we have them at home.
July 15th, 2010 at 4:32 pm
please island02 last years game vs. b-high was over after 1 quarter when galvin put 150 in 1 f’n quater. its gonna take defense to win. tell me island02 with the loss of the majority of the o-line that was underated do you believe u got guys 2 step in not miss a beat? island02 u guys were 7-4 in ’07 with no playoff wins! hope u want to be better than that?i see 6-4 at best that’s if u can beat a weak newark team & somehow get outta e.c with a win but it’s still drought season wen it comes to gettin a win n ncs!
July 15th, 2010 at 4:34 pm
CHALKtalk, I checked out CCC yesterday and I don’t know if this is possible but, did Mack look bigger and even more physical then recent years? They may really have something this season.
Also B-High could even be more balanced offensively this year. Abrams for Berkeley seemed to be in mid season form in July. Hope he doesn’t peak early. Looking forward to their non-conference games this year.
July 15th, 2010 at 4:38 pm
accal- berkeley, but watch out 4 pinole. haal- san leandro the rest stink! bsal- st.pats naji patrick nuff said. encinal close 2nd bval- pitt dfal- las lomas, really like miramonte q.b ebal-DE LA mval-washington dval- concord
July 15th, 2010 at 4:40 pm
who is mack playin in non-league?
July 15th, 2010 at 5:06 pm
Mack playes Ferndale,Pittsburg,Mckinleyville,Marshall(SF),Salesian.
July 15th, 2010 at 9:35 pm
mack is big fast and physical the only thing that will hurt them are yellow flags
B high has a few more weapons but they dont add up 2 run ricky run
July 16th, 2010 at 6:25 am
Alright Billjohnson, yes Ricky ran thru us in the first half , and now thats he’s in Wasu, hopefully we can contain Samuels and Ned. Both are pretty good backs but don’t add up to Ricky. I can’t argue the ncs drought, becasuse you’re right , we have been 1 n done every year, and who knows this might be our year.
July 17th, 2010 at 8:10 am
all this mack talk reminds me of last year with all the o high hype. early prediction pitt 42 mack 7! book it.
July 18th, 2010 at 9:31 am
Wannaknow we dont forget the hatin you did last season towards Berkeley High and Zo, f@ck you jerk stay away from high school sports, you tried to slander zo and his program, stay off the blog, you are bad busy. Run Rickey Run, Go Jackets!
July 18th, 2010 at 9:31 am
Wannaknow we dont forget the hatin you did last season towards Berkeley High and Zo, f@ck you jerk stay away from high school sports, you tried to slander zo and his program, stay off the blog, you are bad business. Run Rickey Run, Go Jackets!
July 18th, 2010 at 9:34 am
Mack looked good, Clyde Bryd is doing a great job with those kids from Kennedy Richmond, Wendell is the truth! Go coach P
July 18th, 2010 at 10:06 am
Fast & Physical I’m hearing a lot of different things about Arroyo from winning league to being middle of the pack in HAAL you were at the CCC camp keep it real how’d they look? Same with B-high as good as last year Simms gonna keep it going? Mack are they the truth? Who’s Coach P?
July 18th, 2010 at 1:54 pm
Arroyo needs some interior lineman on both side JB got the kids believing in his system, limited depth, O’dowd has been impressive in the summer HAAL early favorite about six D1 kids on team. B-High will go 7-3 at best, Pinole Valley is the favorite, EC is small, and Freedom and Pittsburg will be tough losses for B-High. Yea Mack will compete, discipline ? curt and poo are doing a great job, I’ve coached at Mack, before, stay in the study hall, Best and Excell students! Coach P is Macks O Line coach, who has one of the top left tackles in the country in Wendell . Run Rickey Run! Niko will be the next truth.
July 18th, 2010 at 2:38 pm
I agree Arroyo needs lineman and that will take time but dept is not a problem I think Arroyo numbers are second or 3rd in the league to SL and CV.
One thing i can say is that Arroyo will come to play and because we are starting 17 underclassmen we will have a good future a head.
Here we come (SL) !!!
July 18th, 2010 at 3:24 pm
Where do you think that B-High is lacking? Down year, coaching change….? Who’s a D-1 on O’dowd’s team?
July 18th, 2010 at 4:06 pm
Arroyo, you guys will finsih 4 at the highest this year but I see maybe 6 at the lowest. Dont call out SL or you can’t be mad if the hold no mercy against you when you go head to head. I see a blow out coming.
July 18th, 2010 at 4:11 pm
Six D-1 players at ODowd? Wow then they should win the HAAL right? With that much skill they should take D-3 because the only other team in D-III with that many solid players is Encinal and they don’t have that many D-1 players. Sounds like ODowd will be good this year.
July 18th, 2010 at 8:42 pm
just cuz u put lipstick on a pig its still a pig ^ 6 D1 players who where at Odowd MANDOWN stay down
odowd comes in 3rd at best
July 18th, 2010 at 10:00 pm
CHALKtalk, What are you talking about?
July 19th, 2010 at 4:16 am
no what r u talking about 329
July 19th, 2010 at 7:24 am
I was at the CCC contact camp. Coach Bryd and his staff are doing a great job at Kennedy. There is a vast improvement with the program. The big RB is a beast. I question if Kennedy can sustain the physical play they displayed during the short field of a scrimmage scenario over a long haul of a full game. They lack a QB and the team is small in numbers; team depth could be a problem. EC has some good skill players. The big TE/LB kid is a legit D1 prospect. He is still a little raw and I question his ability to consistently catch the ball but that is coachable. EC is however not physical enough to beat Berkeley.
Arroyo should make some noise in the HAAL but SL and O’Dowd in my my opinion are the favorites. I’m not sure about Hayward. The RB and the DE kids are very good players for Arroyo.
O’dowd has 3 legit D1 players the tall receiver, the big tailback and Hardy’s son at linebacker.
MACK is the clear favorite in the OAL. Big, strong and fast but the team is small in numbers. One bad injury to a key player and it could get ruff in the WSO. Team discipline is another issue.
Berkeley is still the team to beat in the ACCAL. Two OL starters and Mike Nedd did not participate at the camp. Coach Sims has been playing alot of young guys on the O and D lines and Secondary to gain experience and increase depth for tough early season run. BHS has back to back games with Marin Catholic, Freedom, PITT, Pinole Valley and Alameda starting the second week of the season. I have yet to see Pinole but I do know they took a hit after graduation and the Jv team was so so.
The season should be interesting other than De La Salle, its up in the air where many teams will fall.
July 19th, 2010 at 7:26 am
Fast and Physical hopefully Berkeley can finish higher than 7-3. Best case scenerio 10-0 or 9-1.
July 19th, 2010 at 7:51 am
To Warrior Jacket, that is a good take.
Thanks for the upshot and has anybody heard any news about blowback from that ugly Clatyon Valley situation? Did those kids get tossed from Herc’s team?
They should have been
July 19th, 2010 at 8:31 am
Was EC at the CCC camp too?
July 19th, 2010 at 9:22 am
Warrior Jacket, nice write up, and Coach Byrd is doing a great job at Kennedy it’s nice to see them compete. As for O’Dowds D1 prospects, Nickerson will be a junior , but Ward is the other LB and is legit. The WR/DE is another one. I’m not sure I would include any of their backs.Last season with the exception of Brown O’Dowd didn’t have much of a running game.
July 19th, 2010 at 9:31 am
Read 325
July 19th, 2010 at 9:52 am
Yes EC was there, Trent Trammell, and his brother, along with the 6″6 TE, I was meaning 6 D1 on the team, 2011 or 2012. Run Rickey Run,
July 19th, 2010 at 10:17 am
ManDown, post 325 says 6 D1,post 333 says a legit 3, and I agree with fast and physical as well as your post 329. It’s still a pig right? ….. LOL!
July 19th, 2010 at 10:34 am
Most pigs dont get dressed up to be dinner
but if u like to wear a black and gold tux be my guess
como se llama
July 19th, 2010 at 10:38 am
I was just repeating Fast And Physical. I don’t know if they have 6 D1 recruits. I’m just saying that if ODowd has 6 D1 recruits then they should win it. Thats a lot of good players on one team.
July 19th, 2010 at 10:40 am
Anyone heard anything about Encinal? They haven’t been on the blogs so far this year. Do you guys play Serra this year or did you drop them?
July 19th, 2010 at 11:34 am
It’s good ManDown, I understand what you were saying and it’s nice to be able to read all these different opinions on the upcoming season. Chalktalk….now thats funny a black n gold tux !
July 19th, 2010 at 12:27 pm
some people get dressed up 2 go 2 the ball
some people just ball this year you wont b able 2 hide behind your coaches in the HAAL 6 weeks until u know if that dressing taste good LMAO
July 19th, 2010 at 12:52 pm
Chalktalk……lmfao!!! I have no idea what ur saying……. but it’s good.
July 19th, 2010 at 12:57 pm
Does anyone know the dates of next contact camp at Marin Catholic HS? I heard Pitt High might be there this time.
July 19th, 2010 at 1:04 pm
Yes , Warrior Jacket the MC contact camp is this wed/thur…07/21-22. Pitt, Serra, Sacred Heart, Alameda JV , just to name a few.
July 19th, 2010 at 1:06 pm
is odowd running new schemes? saw o’dowd last year they had brown & trammel that’s bout it.
July 19th, 2010 at 1:14 pm
Island02- only chalktalk knows wat chaltalk is saying….LOL!!!!
July 19th, 2010 at 1:29 pm
Ur right Coach Trot….LOL ! Billjohnson, we agree on one thing, I don’t know about O’dowds run schemes, but Trammel started against us, but Mario did all the damage… Trammel was 10/58, where Mario had 195 on like 17 carries. Thats what I know about that..
July 19th, 2010 at 2:08 pm
Encinal plays Serra in San mateo on Sat. Sept.
Encinal returns a pretty good RB in Jonathan Allen, Sr, RB, 5-10, 185.
Serra will have lots of speed at skill positions and have a D1A claiber QB and WR with a good running attck. If Serra plays defense, they are going to be very tough this season.
July 19th, 2010 at 2:20 pm
Who’s odowd tall receiver?
July 19th, 2010 at 4:35 pm
NorCalSportsFan,
I know about Allen, he is a good prospect. Do you think that Encinal has a chance this year against Serra? I know last year they played them pretty tough but came up short. Serra will be strong this year under coach Walsh.
July 19th, 2010 at 5:02 pm
How did EC do at the CCC camp?
July 19th, 2010 at 5:19 pm
encinal LB is the worst i seen in about 6 years. SMALL AND SLOW.. on offense they look great , defense is about a c-. they not gone beat serra.. serra is fast.. but encinal beat them in camp this year so i dont know.
July 19th, 2010 at 5:36 pm
i think encinal’s chance to beat serra was last year. serra will be much improved this year and they have some strong underclassmen coming up and i think encinal lost too much from last year’s class. but then again they came back strong last year after losing a ton of stars from the previous year so who knows.
July 19th, 2010 at 6:33 pm
You do realize that Serra is changing their Offense again? I thought they went Pro style last year to match their 6’5″ QB & Adonis Smith & they would hand with it until their 6’5″ QB graduated but they are back to Doubles Wing & Naval Academy Triple Option like in 08. Very similar to MC from last year. It doesn’t suit their QB. They miss Vidal (he was a stud) & those 2 Polynesian LBs on defense. & that return man WR was a game changer for them at times shoved it up Encinal’s ass last year.
July 19th, 2010 at 6:34 pm
I meant to say HANG with it
July 19th, 2010 at 6:46 pm
Perkin,
Are you saying that Encinal has a chance this year? From what I remember Encinal can’t stop the double wing attack (Marin Cathlioc). Yes, A.Smith was a great player and the return man was another good one but I am sure Serra will have some BOYS ready this year.
July 19th, 2010 at 7:33 pm
Fast And Physical:
1st off me & Zo go back almost 20 years so there’s no “hatin”. And what is “Hatin”?? Not liking what someone does or says just because it goes against YOUR personal OPINION??? I call em just like I see them. I stated facts. Nothing personal. I said they couldn’t throw and it would be exposed. HELLO!!! IT WAS.
2nd If you can’t deal with truth maybe YOU should step away from the blogs and locate a fantasy world that is willing to accept you. Real Football fans, coaches, and players are not blinded by their allegiances and accept facts.
3rd I said from day 1, I follow almost all eastbay football, particularly the accal. I can’t help it if I know and understand this game a little better then you. You cannot be 1 dimensional and succeed. At some point you’ll get exposed. Pinole was able to do it, San Leandro tried and failed, and then B-high was beaten by a good team that changed their game plan for that match up.
It seems you’re very passionate which is good. And you’ve never down anything to me personally but the verbal jousting is not my thing.
July 19th, 2010 at 8:59 pm
@wannaknow
u was out or pocket when u talked bout zo fam, stick to just football, many people felt u was out of line when u mentioned his fam.
July 19th, 2010 at 9:06 pm
I’m not saying Encinal is gonna do anything. I hear the word out of their camp is they had a solid summertime & off-season but not enough of the right people were showing up.
July 19th, 2010 at 9:30 pm
nothing to know, wrong person to attack, Ive been friends with Zo for 24 years, its hatin when attack a mans family on a blog, Ive been coaching for 22 years at all levels, and never had a losing season,so check your stats nothing to know. I felt it was unfair to my brother Zo, and since you guys talk all the time, I guess Zo keeps his enemies close, in wanna to; know you. I wasn’t addressing that B-High couldn’t throw, I was pertaining too, the comments you made towards the JV teams grade and eligibility issues. Thats it,thats all, a dumb person would know 2009 B- High was one dimensional.Run one dimensional Rickey run! WSU
July 19th, 2010 at 10:11 pm
@Bhsfan & Fast And Physical.
I can own that one. I should have known some would focus on my words and not my intent with that one. That was my fault.
My point was to explain that keeping on top of grades are a major problem in high school sports. It’s in fact hell. But when you aren’t getting any help and your own falls a lil short that just sucks. Zo never wanted to keep up with grades. He wanted the assistants to do it by building relationships with the players. And they let him down. I felt bad for the guy in the end. He was never gonna get a fair shake at Berkeley. (And he could have built a juggernaut) The AD held him to a higher standard then any other coach on campus and he got no community or faculty support.
As a matter of fact the only real critical thing I ever said was he needs to throw it more. And with the down league Berkeley is in there was certainly time to do so.
Rick did run. I told him all the time its a beautiful thing to watch. I’ll never attack anyone in a blog. That’s just not me. You feel I attacked family and felt the need to speak up. You should. I respect that.
July 19th, 2010 at 11:42 pm
So you are telling me that the only difference between Encinal and Serra is committed players? Wow. Coach Joe better step his game up and get his players to practice. All I know is that if Serra is running double wing Encinal better be ready for that or else it will be Marin Catholic all over again.
July 20th, 2010 at 7:00 am
Wannaknow Thank you

July 20th, 2010 at 1:45 pm
5? Ahead of Foothill u think?
July 20th, 2010 at 1:52 pm
KillerD, I’m sure you already heard that 2 of the x-players have been arrested from Clayton Valley. I thought it was an isolated incident ;but, this is a string of robberies that had been thought out. These fools had a plan on how they were going to pull of each robbery.
July 20th, 2010 at 3:13 pm
Marin Catholic and Eureka should be in the top 20. Marin Catholic is probably in the 10-12 range. Probably would rank Eureka ahead. Eureka is going to be scary good with what they return, but early schedule isn’t very strong. They will show in playoffs and may be favorite to win D3, even ahead of Marin Catholic. Novato is in top 20 as well.
July 20th, 2010 at 3:30 pm
Norcal- Seen Novato play while scouting Valley cristian a few yrs back… remember them being a small but fiesty team.. Never seen Marin Catholic or Eureka but heard good things…
July 20th, 2010 at 3:56 pm
coach trot it’s time to get rid of that wing-t. u havent beat a quality d-1 in a real long time.
July 20th, 2010 at 4:13 pm
No Heritage in the top 20? Interesting…
July 20th, 2010 at 4:15 pm
What are these poll rankings based on Coach Trot? Have you seen all these teams live already? Are you going off of school tradition or just hearsay on how good a team might be. Don’t get me wrong I like it. I was just curious of your ranking method.
July 20th, 2010 at 4:55 pm
Anybody know why Martin transfered from Cal?
July 20th, 2010 at 5:16 pm
only reason he gave in press release was there are too many distractions in bay area.
July 20th, 2010 at 6:13 pm
I find that so fishy. Those distractions were not there from the start?
July 20th, 2010 at 7:42 pm
why so high on washington this year? only player i have heard about is deandre carter. anybody else that might step up this year after losing lousi and ross?
July 21st, 2010 at 6:58 am
Bill Johnson- It’s the Head coach’s job to determine what Offense of Defense a team run’s..Im only an O.C and know my place..lol. Plus i wouldn’t throw the offense under the bus for the 1 and done losses…Dont matter what offense you run when you fumble the rock 7 times in a game (aka Berkely game last yr)
Warrior Jacket- My poll is based of a variety of things..Of course im biased to teams i’ve seen or know something about which is why sum teams like Eureka, Marin Catholic and Novato were left off..
Part is where teams left off last yr like most preseason polls and part if based on talking to a few coach’s and seeing a few of these teams this summer.. What ever the preseason poll is it’s guaranteed to change dramatically in the first few weeks with sum of these early matches that are scheduled…
July 21st, 2010 at 7:08 am
Renegades- Washington has earned a lot of respect in my eyes with last yr’s season then following that up with maybe 1 of the toughest schedules in the East bay this season…
July 21st, 2010 at 7:50 am
anyone have an opinion on the top 20 or care to submit their own poll LOL

The OAL is going to be a little interesting this year. I hear that Oakland High is doing better under new head coach Nelson. I don’t know how true that can be because OHigh wasn’t that good last year. I hear about a solid QB with good play-making WRs so lets wait and see. Fremont High will have a bunch a Samoans but how will they do without that STUD Concrete? Don’t really know but I know that they will be tough when it comes time for OAL play. We keep hearing all these things about Mack, I hope it isn’t all hype because you will be just like OHigh last year. BUST! I hope all that smack you guys over at Mack are talking don’t come back to haunt you because one thing we all know is that Pittsburg won’t have mercy on you.
July 21st, 2010 at 12:43 pm
ManDown
We dont talk smack over here at Mack. All that has been said about Mack is from the people who have witnessed us at camps and passing tournaments. We are no different than any other team. We participate to get better. I have never won or lost a game by talking smack. The name of the game is blocking and tackling. Please allow our kids the chance to be competitive in this thing called HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL without all the hype. We will be young and competative!
July 21st, 2010 at 8:50 pm
ManDown did you see there has been a schedule change for week 3 that has HUGE ranking implications. Berkeley is now set to play Marin Catholic at MC. MC has everything to gain from this match up I cant see an upside for Berkeley. Both teams come in with new head coaches. Also MC plays Las Lomas in week 2 so the Northbay should wreak havoc on your rankings in the first 3 weeks. What are your thoughts?
July 21st, 2010 at 10:31 pm

while i understand that last year’s results play a part in preseason rankings you also have to go on who is coming back. deandre carter is coming back to washington, but who else? how will they move the ball this year? who will step up to replace the production of Lousi on the line? do they have anyone who can? that’s great if they scheduled tough again this year, but do they have the players to help them get through this schedule? i have the same questions about deer valley. they had a so-so jv squad and they lost both williams who accounted for most of their offense last year. i know they have Taito on the lines who is a stud, but after that? playmakers coming back that were overshadowed last year by brandon and kristoff? how good is behr? i know he is more of a pure qb then kristoff was but will he be effective? i just don’t think either of those teams warrant a spot in the top five but if you feel they do why?
killerD i would also put MV ahead of Pitt for the preseason because they have a lot of playmakers returning for whoever takes over at qb. defense is a little iffy but still feel they may be better then Pitt who returns Mozee but lost a lot of their playmakers.
obviously preseason rankings are just that…preseason and lots can or will change during the course of the season but am just looking for some info to back up your opinions. can’t wait for the season to start.
July 22nd, 2010 at 5:58 am
Bleachercoach I don’t agree with your assessment of Berkeley not benefiting from the MC game. Although MC is div 3, they are the state runner-up. Berkeley was short a second week game afterthe AD linched on the paper work for the Capital Classic vs Del Oro.
July 22nd, 2010 at 6:02 am
I mean lunched
July 22nd, 2010 at 6:43 am
As of right now MC is Div-IV. They have yet to petition up atleast ner the NCS website & they have a new coach I hope he knows that if he plans on petitioning up.
July 22nd, 2010 at 7:18 am
while your assessment of washington is correct…they lose a lot with lousi and ross. but neither really got much respect last year as it was. and to think they went to the semi-finals on those two alone is absurd.
but can’t the same argument be said for everyone below. you rip on washington but how about all that b-high lost (95% of their offense)
of the teams behind them i believe SRV is the only team close that is improving with lots of returners…but cal high lost a bunch(who replaces davis/their fb/lb, etc.), encinal, foothill (no more mannion), amador (half the roster), logan (2 soph qb’s), concord (hightower and wr), los lomas returns their rb but are they really top 5,etc etc…they all have the same question marks.
so while i agree washington has big questions…but doesn’t everyone? it is high school football the graduate move on, then you reload or don’t…name of the game…
if i did the rankings i would probably slide mack and srv up to 4 and 5, dv to 6, wash to 7…and then so on…now again i am only talking east bay i don’t know much about the former redwood empire teams…
one thing i have noticed from seeing some of the camps and passing tourneys…carter is arguably one of the most electrifying player in the east bay this year…
July 22nd, 2010 at 7:44 am
the blood is flowing with excitment now can’t wait for the Labor Day weekend.
Any teams out there expected to do well that will really collapse this year?
Who will nose dive this season that will shock east bay football fans?
July 22nd, 2010 at 8:04 am
Everybody is high on Mack maybe rightfully so but what games are gonna legitamize them? IN their Non-league there’s Pitt. Thats it. Lets say they beat Salesian & Fernadale & their other non league but lost to Pitt what does that prove that they’re deserving to be top 4 or 5. Then there’s the Oal & the OAL play-offs all those other teams are as good as their non-league & that hasn’t been very good the last few years as people often talk about. Giving them 4 or 5 base on what last year? How they finished? I wasn’t impressed. How they did or how they look at a camp means nothing. I was high on O-High last year with their camps but it didn’t translate to the season. They kicked Serra’s ass & Marin Catholic but look how those 2 other teams did. BY game 1 Serra almost beat the #1 team in the state & MC we all know how they finished.
Mack doesn’t have a schedule to prove themselves. Except for Pitt. They’re lucky they got that game.
July 22nd, 2010 at 8:27 am
i completely agree perkin…if you see earlier posts i kind of ripped the mack faithful for praising them as the best team…it has been a while since the OAL won a meaningful game outside the OAL…if they get pitt then they will move to the top 3..if not it will be hard to keep them in the top 7 or 8…and if they lose another game they wont even be ranked in top 15…
one guy complains we go too much on last year and not enough on what we have this year, the next says we are going too much on what we have seen this year and did nothing in the past..i guess no way to win on this board, haaaa…that is why it is a preaseason poll…
no doubt excited for the year and it will all get sorted come september!!!
my opinion you have to go more off last year plus combination of returners as well…good teams have good systems and good coaches…so there shouldn’t be huge drop offs year to year if they are a good program…which always keeps the ebal near the top along with other top programs around like logan, wash, sl, pitt, encinal, dv, etc…
July 22nd, 2010 at 8:27 am
Anyone with a pulse on Sonoma County League have any predictions for this season? I know Casa you can never count out, Petaluma had the great run until the Eureka playoff game, and Analy had the Cinderella-like run last season coming up just shy vs. MC in the playoffs. Go ‘Hounds
July 22nd, 2010 at 9:55 am
OAL went 11-17-1 in their non-league last year. But we all
know the deal, non-league (or pre-season as they like to call it) doesn’t mean Jack to their playoff seeding. If they went to the NCS they’d take those games a lot more serious because of the playoff implications. I am from Oakland I’ve worked in the Oakalnd schools for years and I know how they treat those games. “Ah that was just pre-season”… Hear it all the time.

No well coached player should ever say awl thats just preseason. Preseason or not you can get hurt out here. So if you like getting slapped upside the head and pulling feet out your ass, time and time again. Keep letting the players think its only preseason.

I’m not just talking about players, community members and coaches too. I used to
be a sub for 4 years in OUSD and I mostly talked ball with people (staff and kids). I hella love Oakland and I’m callin us out so we can stand up and do what we’re capable of. All of the OAL teams should automaticlly be thought of as top 15 teams like the EBAL. We have the talent and passion but not the commitment. And I’m not talkin about players either. There’s been a revolving door of coaches lately. We need some Beam and Zo’s. They could of got us to the promised land (state game).
July 22nd, 2010 at 11:00 am
some factors are not seen, transfers of kids from out of the area kids leaving private to go to public, kids that move to ur area from out of state, some kids may have missed a previous season due to bad grades injured the whole season. berkeley high has a cont school down the street and some kids get sent there to catch back up with credits when they fall behind and can come back to b high when they are caught back up.
at b high i have seen all these things happen, so when they lose kids to grad, transfer or bad grades they gain just as many or more bodies frome the above scenerios, bhigh will never be lacking of talent, they had a good coaching staff the past 3 seasons under carter and now under sims they will do very well also.
others top area progams always reload with talent but if you have a good coaching staff thats what also keeps schools from being a program and not just a good team every once and awhile, that stability

Well I don’t see Encinal collapsing they should go 9-1 with there cup cake schedule. The only decent team they are playing is Serra which will be there one loss. If they lose to anyone else I would be surprised.
July 22nd, 2010 at 12:48 pm
who has the toughest schd
and who has the cup cakeist
which league is the cup cake league
and who’s the BRUT

Bleachercoach,
Despite there schedule, do you see Encinal contending for another NCS title this year? Do you think they have a legitimate chance to beat Serra this year?
July 22nd, 2010 at 12:59 pm
What league is worse, ACCAL or HAAL?
July 22nd, 2010 at 1:14 pm
i am not suggesting that ross and lousi were the only reasons wash high did well last year. but you can’t deny that they leave a leadership vacuum as well. this all plays a part in preseason rankings. how good was the jv team coming up? why do you think SRV gets that jump as you mentioned? because for the last two years as freshmen and then as jv they have been dominant only losing to the DLS JV last year. now those players are moving on up to varsity. again you mentioned deandre carter, and i am excited to see him perform on the field, but what else do they have? decided to do a little research on my own and see that they have 6 returning starters on the offense and 7 on the defense. carter was their best rb last year and they also return their top wr in jennings i believe. they also move up a solid 7-3 jv team. now that would make sense as to why they might be placed so high. it was not my intention to rip washington, but more i wanted some reasons supported by fact as to why they would be so high. i didn’t know much about the upcoming huskies so i wanted some info thats all. like you said they reload or they don’t. i wanted to know what Wash was reloading with.
i am fine with b-high where they are because for the last three years that have produced good to very good teams and always have players to reload. they lose galvin but ned is a solid rb who saw plenty of time last year. they also return henderson on the line. they have a new coach who has been successful with much less talent though it was a smaller division. if it’s true that they have a passing game developing i expect them to at least repeat last year’s season. the only problem for them is I think NCS may be even deeper this season so they may not be as high.
in regards to foothill, av and logan you can see that killerD has moved them much lower and i think it is where they belong. you are right. foothill and av lose their top players, don’t return a ton, and have so-so talent moving up. concord returns their qb lloyd who has had a good summer and a good rb in Pica who didn’t get a lot of carries because of the passing attack. Let me put it this way, I saw Alec as a freshman at DLS and if he were still playing for the Spartans more then likely he would have been starting for them this upcoming season as an rb.
Again all I was looking for are some reasons about how the teams are retooling and reloading. Btw don’t sleep on American High this year. They were the last team into NCS d1 last year, but they return 9 starters on offense and 9 starters on defense and move up a 9-1 jv team. Sounds like they might be battling for that MVAL title this year.
Also Chris Martin announced he is transferring to Florida, but his eligibility status remains in question for the upcoming season.
in regard to the can’t miss games in week zero for NCS teams i would say on friday Pitt @ Foothill or San Leandro @ Bellarmine look to be the most interesting involving NCS teams.
Saturday you could go up to the Battle of the Captiol and see some pretty good games between Cardinal Newman and Central Catholic as well as Concord vs. Whitney. SPSV plays Salesian and then of course DLS travels to Serra.
But the most can’t miss game of the opening of the season takes place Saturday August 28 in the SJS section between Grant High and Folsom @ Folsom. Game will be on ESPN though it hasn’t been announced which ESPN channel will have it. But if you want to make the trek that game will be one of the best of the season. D-1 players all over the field for both sides.
July 22nd, 2010 at 1:19 pm
Bleachercoach,
Berkeley has better athletes but Marin is a very tough team with good coaching. As we all saw last year what Marin did to Encinal, I think they are more than capable to beat Berkeley. Marin is returning a bunch of players from the state runner up team and I can see them easily repeating this year. Berkeley is a good team but they were over achievers last year in my mind and I don’t think that this years Berkeley team is as good as last years team.
July 22nd, 2010 at 1:36 pm
renegades10-
Great Break down..
July 22nd, 2010 at 2:22 pm
Marin only returns three starters on the offensive side of the ball, but 6 on the defensive side. I think the game with Berkeley will be a low scoring grind it out affair. But I don’t know the MC easily repeats. They could, but it definitely will not be easy. Miramonte and Novato are both tough and Novato is a league opponent so potentially two matchups between the Wildcats and Hornets if they meet in the playoffs as well. Curious to see Encinal this year, but expect them to be there as well.
July 22nd, 2010 at 2:31 pm
btw forgot to mention that those NCS games I listed are on Sept 3rd/4th. For some reason SJS starts a week earlier.

I’d like to add my 2 cents when evaluating the OAL.
I just recently moved back to the Bay Area 2 years ago after living in Southern California the last 22 years and watching Southern Cal high school football. I like to think I have a decent grasp on the game of football (high school & college). I was an asst/coach at Fremont High 1982-1984 and I had the opportunity presented to me (which I declined) to be a grad assistant both at Howard University and Boise St. I learned from one of the best, my mentor was Ed Lambert who is on the Board Of Directors for Black Coaches Association.
Moving back to Oakland I was able to watch my 2 nephews play at Castlemont (Aaron Horne & Jordan Green) and from what I can tell; there is a mirad of problems as to why the OAL has problems in non-league games against more establish programs. The OAL always have had talent but the difference is nowdays that talent isn’t developed in a competitive sense to keep getting better as the challenges get tougher. This falls on the coach, parent “AND” player. With the advent of XBOX and Playstation; a lot of Oakland kids don’t put in the physical work on the field required to excel in more competitive situations (tougher games & moving to next level). These kids rather sit in front of a TV and feel good about themselves that way which is the easy thing to do. I see it first hand.
And believe it or not the coaches are partly responsible because they don’t “COMMIT” to the schools they are coaching, instead putting in just enough time to say you are the coach. As an incoming freshman or sophmore it is the coaches job to build up a player’s dream and plant the seeds of ambition, then the coach must lay the groundwork for his players to compete and excel at everything they do; and I’m not just talking football. After that if those players are doing the groundwork to make themselves better; then that coach better be doing everything humanly possible to shine the light on that kid and put him in the best position possible to compete and succeed. Now I know the coach also has a life and his own family but some kids need more attention than others because fair or not; some kids have more obstacles than others and in Oakland a coach needs to be COMMITTED to the kids and the program.
Parents must share in this blame also because they can meter out the discipline and punishment (or reward) for behavior and actions.
I guess the magic word here from my standpoint is commit and compete.
July 22nd, 2010 at 3:23 pm
good breakdown renegades…sound right on all accounts…yeah heard american had a solid scrimmage vs foothill too…
i like SRV a lot this year too why i said they should be higher…
July 22nd, 2010 at 4:02 pm
also to note for concord
4 returning starters on the oline 1 returning receiver and 7 defenders in the box comming back, also their strength of schedule is throug the roof
whitney
amador valley
skyline
american
heritage
July 22nd, 2010 at 5:59 pm
norcal- i think why SRV won’t be at the beginning is solely because of inexperience which could bite them at the beginning when they face defending WCAL champ Mitty. as the season goes on i think they will improve.
eastbay- wouldn’t necessarily call Concord’s schedule through the roof. AV and skyline both look to be pretty down this year. AV I think finishes #7 in the EBAL only ahead of Livermore. Whitney is a very good d4 school in the SJS, American should surprise this year, and Heritage has always been solid and may finish second this year behind Pitt in BVAL and think on the right night they could take out Pitt. So a solid schedule indeed, but not necessarily one I would consider through the roof. If you were to switch out AV with say MV or SRV and Skyline with Mack I would then agree with your statement.
July 22nd, 2010 at 7:16 pm
Mandown I think Encinal will go 9-1 I dont see them beating Serra. Serra has two games before they play Encinal (De La Salle and Monte Vista)which are great tune up games win or lose. Encinal has only one tune up game, but I think the Biggest factor for the Jets is they do not have the D1 prospect in the back field in ’08 they had Jonathan Brown and in ’09 they didn’t fall off much with Duckett running the show both where true D1 talent. Jonathan Allen is a good speedy back but he is not either of those two the Jet O line is big but I dont think the rest of the supporting cast is there like the past two seasons.
July 22nd, 2010 at 8:53 pm
FINALLY the board is heating up again!
In the next few weeks I will take a look at opening weekend and cast my predictions, and I am looking forward to reading the rest of yours too.

Just for you eastbay guys the is another website http://www.ncsnbl.com which has some great northern northcoast football info check it out
July 22nd, 2010 at 11:23 pm
B coach, nice website. Us, East Bay folks need something similar. Gades 10, you seem to know your teams. you a beat writer or something? rumor is you were a writer for M preps?? true?? good insight into bay area football…
July 23rd, 2010 at 4:41 am
Caliball, you should attend off-season work-outs at Castlemont for a month. That was a pretty weak break down trying to blame it on the coaches. One of the reasons Barnes left Castle is he got no committment from his players. What do you do when your players don’t show up? Its the worse with Freshman & sophmores. You attend practices everyday to -plant seeds & shine light but you don’t see a kid more then twice until JUly or something like that & you can’t cut the kid cause you don’t have numbers like that.
July 23rd, 2010 at 6:33 am
amador and heritage are both listed in most people’s top 20, do the classifications work differently in sac? whitney is a d2 state bowl team,so i thought the enrollment would be similar. i should have prefaced my statements with, in the DVAL and among east bay d2 teams concord strength of schedule is through the roof.
July 23rd, 2010 at 8:12 am
i know heritage is good as I said as much. Amador is in most people’s top twenty because of the season they had last year and they may finish in there but not likely. Even if you look at the rankings KillerD put up you will see they are the seventh EBAL team which is where I predicted they would finish. Some rankings don’t have St. Mary’s, BOD, or Alameda; all teams which are capable of putting together a strong season and jumping in there. As you said though when thinking about Concord as a D2 school it is a tough schedule. Within D2 teams I would put it right below Washington.
The SJS classification system is different again this year. Now they have one large pool of schools from D1-DIV and they take the 64 best teams within that pool and divide them into four brackets of sixteen. Schools with the largest enrollment are D1, after that D2 and you get the idea. As far as Whitney being state bowl game D2 not sure about that because of the new rule that you play in the bowl game classification according to your section classification. This means for teams like Grant who are most likely SJS D2 because of how many schools are bigger then them, they now will be eligible for either the open or DII games. Now since their are no DIV bowl games and Whitney is too big to be in the small school bowl I would guess they are DIII bowl eligible.

ALL East Bay Prep fans need to go up to Del Oro High School and Support THEIR Teams on September 3rd and 4th. So maybe next year they can consider bringin it closer to home!
Oh and BTW, Alec Pica may be one of the Best Kept Secrets at RB in the East Bay. Heard it hear first… Top 5 Back.
July 23rd, 2010 at 8:49 pm
s1lverngreen thank you for the kind words. No I am not a writer or reporter, I am a football fan and the high school game is the most enjoyable for me I can see 2 or 3 live games a week and watch players who play for the love of the game and not the million dollar premadonnas.
Eastbay football I agree with you about Heritage. They open 09/03 against Novato and from what I am reading Heritage is a 2 touchdown favorite.
I think Novato is trying to make an early statement with their schedule Heritage from the BVAL, Foothill from the EBAL and Bellarimen from the WCAL all huge games with teams that have great winning traditions, not to mention they will more than likely play Marin Catholic twice.
Its nice to see a program put a high level play over a potental undefeated season that really means nothing.
July 24th, 2010 at 12:55 am
You can’t just blame one person for the down fall of the OAL.
Budget
1) Parents
2) Coaches
3) Admin
4) lower leval schools
5) Pop Warner “Freshman not playing in High School”
6) The kids
7) Media
Coaching is my life !!!!
July 24th, 2010 at 3:43 am
bleacher coach i agree but lets not get it twisted your a east bay hater i remebered you last year on the blog and the year before.. your 1-2
July 24th, 2010 at 6:35 am
why did they take the most exciting play in football away, (kick return)from high school football, could it be to benefit those teams with less speed. kick off returns change games. Now if you kick the ball in the endzone you cant bring the ball out wow. Imagine how that hurts the inner city schools and helps the OTHERS!!!!
July 24th, 2010 at 6:45 am
HOW MANY INNER CITY SCHOOLS HAVE KICKERS THAT CAN KICK TO THE ENDZONE LINE I SAY TIME AND TIME AGAIN YOU HAVE BEEN HOOD WINK LEAD A STRAY BAMBOOZELED next they will say you cant dunk a basketball oh yeah they tried that already!!!
July 24th, 2010 at 9:08 am
not being able to return out of the endzone has always been a rule…next thing we are going to blame OAL struggles on the fact that they don’t get to return balls out of the endzone…fact is there are typicall 5 kickers a year that can
July 24th, 2010 at 9:42 am
c.sparks I am not an Eastbay hater at all. As a matter of fact I believe the EBAL top to bottom is the toughest league in all of the NCS.
July 24th, 2010 at 10:48 am
any one no what year they band kickoff returns out of the endzone
July 24th, 2010 at 6:44 pm
apologies, bleachercoach, i should of said it another way, your biased with your opinions? your a novato fan.. for sure, and then marin.
July 24th, 2010 at 7:21 pm
Word is that Concords QB commited to Southern Miss
July 25th, 2010 at 1:16 am
chalktalk sorry but ur a bit late that rule been n affect i know at least since the mid to early 90′s. schools should look n2 gettin soccer players out to kick, that b high did last year
July 25th, 2010 at 10:11 am
c.sparks I am A Novato supporter no doubt about it. I am not biased at all , the MCAL outside of MC and Novato is a very weak league and in knowing that both MC and Novato have gone out of there way to play a very tough preseason schedule. MC is playing SI from the WCAL which behind the EBAL is in my opion the next best league top to botton , then Las Lomas and Berkeley high which we all know is by far the best team in the ACCL. Novato has take nthe preseason to a whole nother level Heritage(Brentwood) Foothill(Pleasonton) and Bellamine. Not one of the teams have a calpreps rating below 27 with the tops at 41.
July 25th, 2010 at 11:57 am
heritage has a 25 by the way..but yes a tough preseason schedule…problem is heritage still hasn’t had a big win ever…they are an up and coming team that are tough to beat but really no good wins against top competition…
foothill takes step back and i am not sure about bellarmine…
but good for novato got to play tough teams that is what it is all about especially when you play in weaker divisions…my feeling a team learns twice as much from a loss than it does from a win..

Im never late born ready
Only a fool would say get a soccer player to justify
a rule change that benefit a certain group and is a extreme disadvantage to another. DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH OF A GAME CHANGER A KICKOFF RETURN IS. DO YOU KNOW WHAT TYPE OF FIELD POSITION. Move the line back watch the game change BHSFAN
July 25th, 2010 at 2:03 pm
Bellarmine will be a big question mark this year. Many expected that they would not repeat as CCS Open champs last year after graduating one of the best classes in school history the previous season. But they went right on ahead to repeat and lose a close state title game. Lost a lot of seniors, but had I believe seven sophs on varsity last year. Only 4 starters return on offense and 3 on defense. JV team went 3-7 but as previously mentioned missing best players. Will have a lot of game inexperience, but a lot of these guys will have had the opportunity to learn behind last years team. Their top returning player is Kris Olugbode who is an RB/LB and is the younger brother of last year’s WCAL player of the year Kyle Olugbode. Janda is one of the great coaches in the bay and would not be too surprised to see those guys go out and win another title, but also wouldn’t be surprised to see a bit of a rebuilding year given that they play in the WCAL which is always one of the toughest leagues in NorCal. Catching this team early could bode well for their opponents. First game is against San Leandro @ San Jose City College which is one of the better opening week games. Then a week off before they play Novato.
July 25th, 2010 at 2:29 pm
what group are you talking about? please no more racial comments on here…
you telling me with 4,000 plus students there is nobody at B-high that can kick the ball in the endzone..
2nd how many teams last year did you play that put the ball in the end zone everytime?
now dont get me wrong i would prefer to allow all returns out as well, silly rule if you ask me…but i think there are more worth while things to be upset about.
July 25th, 2010 at 5:11 pm
Perkin:
I did not soley blame the coaching in the OAL. I also mention that parents and players share in the responsibility too. If you read the article I actually put more blame on the players. Ultimately it is the players not going on the field putting in work. Through the years the inner city kids have always had unique circumstances that suburbian kids did not have to deal with. Are you suggesting that Coach Carter and Coach Beam didn’t have the same problems ?? Believe me, Coach JB did a hell of a job over at Castlemont and I understand his issues with dealing with the inner city student. I don’t know how many other coaches could’ve fared better considering the circumstances. In the end JB chose to go in a different direction; and for his career I dont blame him one bit. He has to do what’s best for him, his family and his career. But the problems Castlemont has and the problems most inner city programs have with student participation are not new and didn’t just start in the last couple few years.
It’ll take dedication and consistency by some coaching staff that’ll ultimately make kids want to come to their program, make them (kids) want to stay eligible, and make the kids want to commit and compete. And the parents must work hand-in-hand with the coach to create something truly special.
That’s no knock on any coach, and until then the OAL will be up and down and on occasion will have a team that will compete but they won’t be able to sustain year after year after year of winning due to the merry-go-round of coaching staffs.
July 25th, 2010 at 5:29 pm

i guess we are some fool for gettin a soccer playing to do the kicking duties oh yeah he kicked bout 85 to 90% of his kick offs DEEP in the end zone and b high didnt not have any kick returns for td’s last year, kicked i believe 2 45yard fg, but b high was fools for getting a soccer player for a kick, lol, the rule is the rule coach around it and use it. my point smart guy was that other schools should do the same

@bhsfan
spoken like a true “tom”
Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
No rule changes benefit the lower class or i dont know of any
Do you need to be smart to play football answer no some of the dumbest people on earth are great football players. “Rule change you can no longer be a dummy and play football” If there were no grade rules DLS and the Ebal would be crushed or be forced to get some inner city kids

Sorry guys. Taking a break from football and sports for a second. I know this is a sports blog, but anyone who knows me from my posts should check out a special talent from the Bay Area. Go to youtube and put in “One Day – Dante”.
Sorry for being so off topic, but I wanted to share with my “friends” from this blog. Thanks for indulging me.
Go Panthers!!

A bit of off topic here with the current conversation but keeping in mind this was originally a DLS blog, just learned that TJ Ward, ex DLS and University of Oregon alum signed a 4 year $5 million contract with the Cleveland Browns! Go TJ!!

We all said to check back in Septemeber. I saw DLS just pummel Serra. Ya may as well pencil DLS into the Open Bowl now. Wow! This is the best defense that I’ve seen from the Spartans. It’s right on par with the ’02 team that had Jones-Drew, T. Kelly(rip),K. Simon, and Derek Landry…among others. Offense looks like it hasn’t missed a beat. Houston is a stud and I think they have 2 or 3 backs that’ll go over 1000 yards this year…lol. Serra scored a garbage TD at the end against the 2nd and 3rds. Gorman is toast. They’d better be happy with that close loss to Hamilton and their win against Del Oro ’cause DLS is gonna stomp ‘em…bad…38-17…probably worse. Just sayin’

There is no ” coulda-shoulda” in football.
Crenshaw got beat by a better football team,PERIOD !
Had De La Salle, gotten beat( and they do, from time to time) one would not have been exposed to the sour grapes and Crensahw people making excuse, after excuse. You got whupped !

DLS just ended 2010 not only destroying every team they played, but the #2 team in the state.. a team that many argued was better in all aspects and will beat DLS. Funny.. DLS outplayed them in every aspect of the game, and it was a complete blowout.
