Granada defends No. 1 ranking

By Matt Smith
Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010 at 12:38 pm in Boys soccer.

With more important things on the line, like staying in the East Bay Athletic League race and positioning for seeding in the North Coast Section’s Division I playoffs, the Granada High School boys soccer team did something else in the meantime.

The Matadors protected their newly acquired No. 1 ranking in the Bay Area News Group’s East Bay online soccer rankings; while San Ramon Valley couldn’t capitalize on chances in a 1-0 Granada win during Tuesday night’s EBAL showdown.
Granada (14-2-4, 6-2-3) stayed organized on defense, not allowing a Wolves goal despite many early chances for the home team.
“We started out a little flat and San Ramon came out ready to play,” Granada coach Chris Salazar said. “They got us on our heels, but we were able to settle down and start getting some opportunities.”
The Matadors then scored on a penalty kick by Ryan Thomas after Garrett Foster was fouled in the box.
“We knew this was going to be a tough game but we don’tgo in afraid of anyone,” Thomas said. “Even though we’re ranked No. 1 we have to come out and play hard, and tonight we came out on top.”
San Ramon Valley (10-3-7) controlled the game early on, but couldn’t push an opportunity across.
“If you are around the game long enough you realize that’s how it goes sometimes,” San Ramon Valley coach Don Busboom said. “It’s unfortunate it was decided on a penalty kick but you have to give Granada credit for
putting the pressure on us.”
The Mats have not lost in 12 straight games (9-0-3) and stay within seven points (28-21) of De La Salle.
“I’m really proud of these boys,” Salazar said. “We’ve kind of been on a little mission since starting 0-2 in league.”
After a big week that saw the Matadors hand the Spartans their first ever EBAL loss, a road game against the No. 5 Wolves promised to be a tough game, but the Granada defense posted it’s 10th shutout of the season.
“I think we have a great back line,” Thomas said. “And tonight showed that with us coming off that big win over De La Salle that we are capable of staying focused beating another strong team.”

Congrats to Granada for moving into 2nd place in EBAL. I’m sure most EBAL teams thought that it wasn’t possible after they went 0-2 to start league play. DLS has a 7 point lead with 3 games left. A tie or win this Friday would lock in 1st place as league champions. The real quest is obviously NCS but winning EBAL would still be a nice accomplishment for our boys.
Each EBAL playoff bound team has a chance to win it all, yes even Amador. I also wouldn’t be shocked to see to non EBAL teams in the finals.

    “Two” correction

Congrats to Granada for moving into 2nd place in EBAL. I’m sure most EBAL teams thought that it wasn’t possible after they went 0-2 to start league play. DLS has a 7 point lead with 3 games left. A tie or win this Friday would lock in 1st place as league champions. The real quest is obviously NCS but winning EBAL would still be a nice accomplishment for our boys.
Each EBAL playoff bound team has a chance to win it all, yes even Amador. I also wouldn’t be shocked to see two non EBAL teams in the finals.

  3. The Sweeper Says:

I would be SHOCKED to see two non-EBAL teams in the NCS 3A soccer finals, boys or girls. You have to go back to the 2004 boys 3A finals to find and EBAL-less 3A final, when Berkeley bested Washington 1-0 in 4 OTs.

On the girls side, the NCS 3A finals have been all-EBAL dating back to 2004, when Foothill won 2-0 over…Carondelet (now EBAL). In fact, an EBAL team has won the girls NCS 3A final in 25 out of 28 years (3A and pre-3A), with pre-EBAL Carondelet winning the other 3. SHOCKING.

The Castro Valley girls have the best shot at breaking through in the 2010 NCS 3A finals.

  4. Scoreboard Says:

Congrats to Granada yes and what about Cal moving into 3rd? People seemed to have forgotten about them after a few bad games, they still only have 1 more loss than Granada.
Also I’m still finding it hard to say Granada is the undisputed #1 when they probably won’t even win their own league-7 points behind at that..Oh well, this mess won’t be settled until next week!

  5. BbOy Says:

Any news on the Campo vs Acalanes game??
LL beat Dublin 2-0 dominating the game
    very good soccer displayed

  6. Matt Smith Says:

    Ya, Aclanes 1-0.
    Dougherty beat Alhambra 5-1.
With the Las Lomas score, looks like we got all the DFAL scores in.

  7. BbOy Says:

    Thanks Matt
    DFAL getting more mixed up!
It’s good to see so many good teams competing like that.

  8. Matt Smith Says:

I wouldn’t want to play Las Lomas right now.

  9. The Truth Says:

Good game in Dublin tonight.Hard, physical, well played. BTW, Dublin does an excellent job of putting on a game: good crowds, good music before the game, announcers.I’m impressed with what they do to create a good envirromet for their soccer team.

  10. BbOy Says:

    #9

True that! Specially the Snack Shack! It’s pretty hard to see a team putting on stuff like that for their soccer team

  11. Tack Says:

    Matt,
do you know anything about Alhambra? They started out 3-0 in league but once they lost to Dublin they’ve taken a lot of losses. Are they weak now or is their game just off?

  12. Matt Smith Says:

Trey McNorton is a very impressive player, but that team has had plenty of injuries to deal with this year, including him.
They are a scrappy bunch, and if they get in (and get the ship righted) I think they’ll be a tough out.

  13. thereporter Says:

Matt, do you know if teams from up north are represented in NCS? Teams such as Petaluma, Analy, Eureka, Washington, ext. I know they are in NCS for other sports but I have heard nothing mentioned about them for soccer.

  14. Dougherty Valley Fan Says:

Just watched Dougherty Valley dismantle Alhambra. Tray McNorton played a full match and worked hard all night, but the Dougherty Valley center defenders did a great job limiting his touches. If teams can key in on mcnorton they’re easier to handle.

  15. Matt Smith Says:

The teams up in Marin/Sonoma/Humboldt counties play during the spring and fall (I forget which leagues play when and if it is boys or girls) but they definitely don’t play in the winter.

  16. thereporter Says:

Oh, that’s a little bit disappointing. I think it would be fun to throw them into the mix of things.

  17. Tack Says:

One of the major reasons LL is so dangerous is because of #16. He can throw the ball great distances on throw-ins. Both of LL’s goals against Dublin came off his throw-ins.

  18. defense_mom Says:

I guess it’s my turn to jump on the band wagon as so many DLS fans did against Granada vs San Ramon and will be rooting for Amador to come out strong against DLS. Looking at their actual scores they too have a good chance to take a win against DLS this friday. I can do this only for one day that’s the exception!

Great job to our friends on Cal High to come on up and join our Granada team to the top!

  19. The Truth Says:

Matt- where do you see the DFAL now in terms of seeding for NCS? Does Las Lomas move over Dublin now that they have beat them twice and that they beat Acalanes?

  20. Matt Smith Says:

Great question about the DFAL, and what a competitive league it is.
My honest answer is that I’m not sure what I would do. I think at this point, Bishop O’Dowd is inline for the No. 1 seed and Albany should take advantage of the everybody in the DFAL beating each other and get the No. 2.
The No. 3 seed will definitely be either Dublin (probably them) Las Lomas or Acalanes. I would say the four and five seeds will be DFAl teams as well.
If Dublin closes strong, they’ll get the No. 3, or even the No. 2 seed, but LL is just sitting there waiting for a reason to earn a top three seed.

  21. The Truth Says:

Matt- outside of O’Dowd who has Albany played recently that you would consider DFAL quality?

  22. Matt Smith Says:

Nobody really. I think Piedmont can hang with DFAL teams on most days, and Kennedy is a team that is probably DFAL worthy on some days.
I just think Albany’s record and impressive results earn them consideration for a top two seed. I don’t imagine they’ll be worse than a three at all.

  23. Tack Says:

I think you’re spot on Matt. The 3 seed could go to any of those three DFAL teams.
But what would you predict the outcome would be if Albany ended up playig Dublin or Las Lomas?

  24. Matt Smith Says:

Still not gonna get me to make a prediction, because I’d only make people mad :)
I will say this, Albany’s high-powered attack against the defensive strategy and organizatio of Dublin or Las Lomas would be a real treat to watch. First to two goals wins, and maybe even one would do.

  25. G Pride Says:

Figured it was time to speak up. Here goes:
First, thanks Matt for all the props you’ve given Granada lately. They have come along way the past couple years. I have to give credit where it is due.

1st – Cody Lutz has been the backbone of the Granada defense for the past 2 years. He was all league 1st team sweeper last year and deserves it again this year.
2nd – Foster is a threat up front each game, as you saw against SRV and has incredible talent.
3rd – Thomas has impressed me not only with his play (and throw ins) but he has grown immensely as a leader, especially during the past few weeks.
Finally – the main credit goes to the team. They play solid defensively, the keeper is improving each game, and the mids and forwards are working as a unit and playing a physical EBAL soccer.
While I throw out a few players names, and rightly so, I have to say our success is an overall team effort. I believe this is why DLS is always the toughest team around and still the most respected. They have players like Howard & Moar, but it’s obvious year in and year out that their team is tough 1 thru 11.
Granada’s play this year has made me a proud fan, but we understand the real season starts in 2 weeks.
    Granada Pride!!!

  26. The man Says:

Thats if Albany stays healthy when NCS comes around last year they lost first round team. But i see peoples comment about Albany’s schedule
and about there league so far they have done all there job and has killed most teams
and have done their job i think we should show more respect to them.

Also I think Dublin should be third seed just for how good theyve been this year and. las lomas 4rth Alcalanes to me deserves fifth

Is it the first four seeding get bye weeks or waht??

  27. The Truth Says:

No doubt Albany is a solid team and no disrespect intended.I was just wondering how they matched up outside of the BSAL.It appears ,from what I can discern, that they have played some good teams and have had some success; YV, DVHS and others too.

  28. renegades10 Says:

i don’t know why other DLS fans would have jumped on the bandwagon against Granada because them beating SRV actually made it easier to win the EBAL title. Yeah if they had lost we would be on top of the rankings but the only ranking that matters is at the end of the year. But if the Spartans win out or at least don’t lose they should clinch the EBAL title and most likely a #1 seed in NCS. I can’t speak for other fans but I would rather have a league title and the #1 seed in playoffs then the #1 ranking according to Matt (no offense to you Matt, you do a great job).

  29. Matt Smith Says:

No offense taken at all. You are 100 percent right. League and NCS titles are what matter.

  30. bambam Says:

Renegades – defense Mom states that there was many DLS fans rooting against them vs SRV on this blog. I only saw one post near what she stated. That was when I stated that I prefered a tie between SRV and GHS. No other post was written as far as I know. DLS players/parents are not against them and the seedings is more important than league. That is why are boys will try and win out the rest of league.

  31. The Sweeper Says:

Soccer facts: Albany season, DFAL comment and Dougherty Valley surge, and ranking vs. seedings.

With no losses, Albany has played 5 teams that are NCS playoff qualified today plus a few that may earn their way in. Unless they trip, Albany could be 22-0-2 (22 straight wins) with at least 5 quality wins and the tie against Bishop O-Dowd (and zero slips ups, something only one other team can claim). If they are/remain healthy, they are clearly #2 in 2A, a virtual Boise St. sans blue turf.

The DFAL is clearly mimicking the EBAL toughness test, except they are all staring up at 2 teams: O’Dowd and Albany. Dougherty Valley needs 1 win to end the season at .500 overall and qualify (could still be left out by the committee), and they close with a non-league game against 1-5-1 Mt.Diablo, after Campo, LL and Acal. If they go 2-2 to end the regular season, they could spring an upset in the 1st round.

BTW, #28 Renegades finally provided the lucid answer that I was looking for regarding the rankings vs. NCS seeding (with all due respect to Matt’s excellent work). Finally, intelligent life.

  32. The Sweeper Says:

Thanks for weighing in while I was on the drafting table, proving there is more intelligent life in the East Bay.

  33. The Sweeper Says:

    BamBam, (credit missed)

Thanks for weighing in while I was on the drafting table, proving there is more intelligent life in the East Bay.

  34. defense_mom Says:

Bambam and Renagades10 yes in fact ranking with NCS is the most important and how you finish league. Granada has never been this far up the rankings and if it comes down to taking #2 in league we will be going after the title in NCS! Let the boys play ball on the field and the best team will win. There are other teams in the mix and anyone can win in EBAL.

  35. DBL Says:

Important games are left, but if I was picking NCS today..
    Div. 1 Top 4 Seeds
    1. De La Salle
    2. Granada
    3. Richmond
    4. Clayton Valley

    Div. 2 Top 4 Seeds
    1. Bishop O’Dowd
    2. Albany
    3. Acalanes
    4. Las Lomas

ps. There will only be 12 Div. 2 teams in NCS since there aren’t enough Div. 2 teams meeting minimum qualifications.

  36. chino Says:

DBL- Clayton just lost to College Park so I don’t think they will get a top 4 seed. Also, I think about 14 teams will meet the Div. 2 criteria. Does this mean all 14 teams make it or would they just pick 12 out of 14?

  37. DBL Says:

    Chino,

It’s 12 or 16 with nothing in between.

  38. Matt Smith Says:

That’s not right. It’s not 12 or 16 or nothing. There can be up to 16 teams. If that means 15, then it’s 15. 14, then 14 and so on…
I’ve been saying this all along and I just verified it with the NCS office.

  39. The Sweeper Says:

I believe the number of teams in each division bracket can be between 12 and 16, depending on having enough qualified teams. For example, if 14 teams qualify and apply to play, the first two seeds would get a bye in the first round. If 17 or more teams qualify and apply to play, the bracket maxes out at 16.

  40. chino Says:

Thanks Matt. Just wanted to make sure. A 16 team bracket for Div. 2 would of been perfect last season. Not even 16 teams will qualify this year and some that qualify will have losing overall records.

  41. The Sweeper Says:

The way I see it in NCS D3 boys soccer:
    1. DLS (will win EBAL outright)
    2. Granada (no more losses or ties)
    3. League winner between Richmond and Berkeley
    4. One of either CAL/SRV (EBAL finish), Clayton Valley, or Rich/Berk will likely get the 4th seed, probably based on league or overall points.

Cal needs to make a statement tonight against SRV.

I can’t wait for the results of the closed door seeding committee meeting…

  42. DBL Says:

    Matt,

Did whoever you spoke to at the NCS office explain how they get 13, 14, or 15 teams to play in the tournament with a mandatory completion date of Feb. 27? First round starts on Feb. 17 and then they must get to quarterfinals (8 teams) by Feb. 20.

  43. Matt Smith Says:

If 16 teams make it, then eight teams will win, and you’ll have eight teams on Feb. 20.
If 15 teams make it, seven teams will win (14 games) and one will have a bye, giving you eight teams on Feb. 20.
If 14 teams make it, etc…
It’s super simple. Instead of there being four winning teams and the top four teams with byes (as would be with a 12 team bracket) you just have more games.

  44. The Sweeper Says:

    SRV-1 CAL-1 @half

  45. Matt Smith Says:

    AV 0, DLS 0 half

  46. The Sweeper Says:

2-2 final @CAL v SRV – good NCS tuneup for both

  47. LakeTahoeGuy Says:

    Any more updates???

  48. Tack Says:

    Any knews about Acalanes?

  49. LakeTahoeGuy Says:

    Granada 3 – Foothill 0 final

  50. defense_mom Says:

Granada came out with a strong win 3-0!!

  51. Matt Smith Says:

DLS 0, AV 0. Good match.

  52. Matt Smith Says:

    Acalanes 0, Alhambra 0.

  53. ptown Says:

    AV 0, DLS 0 Final

  54. LakeTahoeGuy Says:

Hey Defense_Mom, I heard Thomas had two more assists on throw ins. Is that true?
Nice to see the GHS defense make up for the earlier game against Foothill.

  55. Tack Says:

Dublin won 4 -1, and with the Acalanes tie, Dublin clinches DFAL

  56. ebal fan Says:

Cal vs SRV- solid 2-2 game. basically an even match all the way through. both teams came out to play. glad to see cal make adjustments from the first time around. Cal went down twice and came back twice. There were two calls in the last two minutes in the box that could have easily been penalty kicks for Cal.

  57. ptown Says:

    Matt,
What was your assessment of the AV vs DLS game tonight?

  58. Tack Says:

What about the Las Lomas game?

  59. Matt Smith Says:

    2-0, LL beat Northgate.

  60. Dougherty Valley Fam Says:

Dougherty Valley over Campolindo 2 to 1

  61. Flipthrow Says:

    Matt,
Did you know there is a connection between NCS #1 ranked Granada and DFAL Champions Dublin? Three of the Dublin players Trevor Weir, Cody Hoster, and Sean Cerruti play club for the Granada Head Coach, Chris Salazar. Coincidently, The Times named Cody Hoster of DHS last week and Cody Lutz of Granada this week “player of the week” in leading their teams to critical victories in DFAL and EBAL respectively. Those players are teammates on Coach Salazar’s club team and players to watch in the upcoming Les Schwab NCS playoffs.

  62. Matt Smith Says:

    Hey Ptown,
Sorry, I just saw this message from last night.
My thoughts on AV v. DLS, is that it was a really even game. Both teams stayed very organized in the back, for the most part, and what I was most impressed with was how quickly both defenses closed in on the ball.
Both teams created great chacnes (two each I think) where they probably should have scored. But I think a tie was a deserved result in this game. Amador really played with a lot of heart, and De La Salle’s effort was certainly there.

  63. defense_mom Says:

hey flipthrower one more thing to point out on Granada High Garret Foster and Ricky Salazar both play for San Ramon Santos along with 2 other boys on Dublin High Nico Portugal and Jaime Sommerville. It’s nice to see those boys all doing well too. It would have been sweet if our other 2 players from Livermore high were on Granada’s team Chris Gonzales and Lalo Aguilar they are awesome players good job this season to all the santos players including Cal high boys Guerrimo Rivas, Ben Danielson, Gravy, & Stevei Rector plus the lone ranger on Foothill Johnny Yankowski who had a good game last night… see you soon Santos players!!

  64. defense_mom Says:

#53 Lake Tahoe Guy it’s funny to admit but my memory is gone after last night but I’ll get back to you on the Thomas question. It might have been the tequila shots after celebrating!!

  65. SRV DAD Says:

Another very frustrating result for SRV who again failed to capitalize on its early opportunities in front of the net. This is becoming an alarming trend late in the season. The Wolves must do better when they are pressing the opposition’s defense and have them on their heals. Still sitting in fourth place, the Wolves must win out next week and get some momentum heading into the NCS Playoffs.

Cal looked much better than in our first meeting. Cal was much more aggressive in getting attackers forward and, with such quick Forwards, did a great job counter-attacking against SRV. First Cal goal was a great example of Cal taking advantage of a midfield turnover and countering very quickly. Some on the SRV side thought there may have been an offsides on the second Cal goal. If there was, it was very close and SRV’s defense/GK still had a chance to make a play and did not.

EBAL Fan mentioned two late non-calls. The first non-call was totally correct. There was some contact by both players, but it looked like the Cal player went down as much on his missed attempted kick as on the contact. On the second non-call both players went down with no time left in the game. Yes, again there was some contact, but there were several players from both teams in a small area near the goal. No referee in their right mind should give that call to either team when they really can’t get an unobstructed view of the play. Time had expired and the referee was letting Cal play out the final seconds in front of the net. Not the way Cal parents probably saw it, but it was a good no call at that point.

  66. DEFENSEBABY101 Says:

ok SRV dad Trevor Tow is an absolute thug and should have got a red card in the first minute of the game. It is a shame he plays the way he does because he is a very good player. The first play in the box was FOUL by Trevor Tow and should have been a PK. Trevor ran over the player and didn’t get the ball. The referee did a very poor job in the game and was the difference in the game. Cal should have won that game and SRV should feel lucky that it was just a tie.

  67. DBL Says:

    #41 The Sweeper,

You’re Div.1 (3A) picks look good with this one possible exception. It will be hard for Berkeley to get a Top 5 seed even if they win the ACCAL on points. They lost and tied Richmond and only beat one other team (that may or may not end up in the NCS), Amador Valley, in their first game of the season. The NCS panel won’t have much to use for Berkeley and they also lost to Newark. It wouldn’t be surprising for them to get an 8 or 9 seed.

  68. DBL Says:

Correction, meant to say Berkeley beat College Park, not Amador Valley in game one.

  69. The Sweeper Says:

#65 DBL, fair point about the Yellowjackets but they also tied SRV (oh yeah, so did 6 other team). But don’t forget were talking about a closed door seeding committee meeting, so expect the unexpected.

  70. The Sweeper Says:

64 SRV DAD, good write-up in the SRV-CAL match and CAL did make good adjustments from game 1. There were several appropriate no-calls on hard should-to-shoulder plays and on 50:50 balls. At one point the ref told a player knocked to the ground to “GET UP” as play continued. The ref was clearly in control on the field and the outcome was indicative of the competitive nature of a fairly wide open match between two teams with contrasting styles.

  71. Flipthrow Says:

Hey DMom, Sounds like the SR Santos club team is loaded with talent. Jamie Sommerville and Nico Portugal for Dublin High are two of the most skilled players in DFAL. I know some of the other players you mention as well. Excellent players. Good luck to all the boys during the rest of the High School season.

  72. ebal fan Says:

SRV dad well said. I think both teams had chances to convert and win the game. The shots were very even, i think it was 6-5 or something like that. SRV capitalized of Cal’s turnover in defensive third to put one away with a great move by Edwards. SRV’s second goal was just Cal’s keeper coming out insecure and leaving the ball there but he has saved their butt all season.
I think the reffering was excellent in the game, he was in clear control from the first minute as he gave out a well deserved card.

  73. u-mustbeinsane Says:

I agree with most of the comments about the Cal-SRV game except the interpretation of the no-calls in the last minute. On the first the SRV player clearly used his shoulder to level Cal’s forward after he had already cleared the ball. Great play in hockey; not so much for high school soccer. The second no-call was right in front of the goal and view was somewhat obstructed. Except for the fact that, with the ball at his feet, the Cal player fell forcefully face down. Maybe I spend too much time watching CSI but that seemed to be an unnatural reaction to incidental conduct.

The way I interpret it, the Ref was not about to call a PK in that situation no matter what. Probably the right decision. The game should not have been decided on those 2 plays.

  74. The Sweeper Says:

Follow-up opinion regarding the officiating at the SRV@CAL boys soccer match. There was plenty to argue about in this very competitive battle. But the ref was always in position and consistently made decisive calls with authority, including waiving off calls. If you followed closely, you understood his interpretation of each play, either verbally or animatedly, including when he overruled each AR (1 throw-in possession and 1 off-side call). There were no truly controversial situations because he was in control the entire match and it seemed the players understood this. Ref grade: 9 out of 10, FIFA level, and I do not give out 10s. If I had a son or daughter playing in the NCS playoffs, I would pray for this ref, versus the ones that blow the whistle every time a player hits the turf. Soccer is, afterall, a contact sport, but you need a ref with real judgment to manage a very competitive match, and this ref fit the bill to a tee.

  75. bambam Says:

Defense mom By any chance did your son play one year with the Charruas? I was just wondering as my son played with Rivas,Portugal,Sommerville,Foster,Gonzalez,Yankowksi,
Schoennagel as they were all pretty much at Ballistic about 4 years ago.

  76. ebal fan Says:

To 69- Are you forgetting that Trey McNorton is in that league as well as kids from doughterty that include a sophomore in O’neill who will only get better and Menezes who is up there in assists and goals as well. I rarely see Portugal and Somerville in the scorecard.

  77. ebal fan Says:

Who was won the last five NCS titles?

  78. The Keeper Says:

EBal fan, recent 3A boys soccer titles are:
    2009-De La Salle (7 titles since 1989)
    2008-Pittsburg (1)
    2007-Monte Vista (2)
    2006-Monte Vista
    2005-De La Salle
    2004-Berkeley (1)

See history back to 1980 (with bracket results back to 2004) at http://cifncs.org/sports/soccer/files/MasterBOYS%20WINTERSOCCERResults.htm

  79. defense_mom Says:

Now BamBam if I gave you that info on my son it would give it away on who I was….lol…..

Yes he did play for Charrus we are all connected one way or another right? Can we now play nice with each other hahaha…

  80. The Sweeper Says:

EBal fan, recent 3A boys soccer titles are:

    2008-Pittsburg (1)
    2007-Monte Vista (2)

DANG, I forgot my handle so The Keeper will show up. Keeper – Sweeper, close but very different. I have never played keeper.

to 74. McNortan is a very talented forward. Matheus Menezes is also a very good forward. I havent seen anything from O’Neill and I know he is on the B team at San Ramon/ Matheus is on Santos with Somerville and Portugal. I dont understand why you have to score goals or assists to be the best though. As these players both play center mid, they start the attack and play very creatively. They do not nessasarily get the glory that they deserve. Dublin would have no offense without them.

  82. The Sweeper Says:

By the way, the SRV girls have won the last 4 NCS girls soccer championships and lost in the semis 5 years ago when MV won. Must be that Mustang soccer club Kool-Aid.

  83. DBL Says:

    Sweeper,

The Berkeley 2004 team had a player named Kamani Hill who went on to UCLA, Europe as a professional, and then also briefly played with the US National team. He was perhaps the most talented and exciting player I’ve seen in the past 10 years of following and watching eastbay men’s high school soccer. It would be interesting to hear about some of the other players careers after high school.

2004 was the 4OT game against Washington. The #6 seed Yellowjackets won on their home field against the #8 Huskies. I believe the championships are now played at a neutral field.

Cal High grad Andrew Wiedeman (2006?), now a junior at CAL Berkeley and recently drafted by Dallas, kicked the ball so hard he broke a keeper’s arm/wrist on a PK. He was a man among boys in HS, and is moving to the next level.

  85. HS Soccer Says:

Andrew did not break Ryan Bales hand on that PK. The keepers fingers caught the ground as he dove, pulling his hand back which snapped his wrist from the weight of his body moving. check video of it.

  86. EBALDad Says:

Congrats to Andrew on a good “CAL” career in HS and College
But, he is not a big guy, and while a great HS player, he was not a “man amongst boys” type of talent
He was very very good, and he worked hard to be good
but his abilities did not “dwarf” the other talent in the EBAL or NCS that year
He was almost totally shut down by MV in the NCS title game that year, a game won by MV
All that being said, it’s Andrew moving on to the MLS and perhaps beyond.
    Best of luck Andrew

Defense Mom I figured it out a few days. I’m glad your son is doing well. I talked to Chris and his brother last week and congratulated him on how well he is playing at Livermore.

Good luck in NCS as long as it’s not against us. lol

  88. The Sweeper Says:

    EBALDad,

Thanks for the comments regarding Andrew. I only saw him play 3 times, and while not large in stature, he was a focused, high-energy player on the field each game that I saw: nobody could keep pace with him. It seemed to translate to a successful college career, though leaving CAL early is curious. I hope that he takes time to get his degree.

Thanks BamBam good luck to you guys too.. well deserved. I wish Chris would have come over to Granada but that’s ok we get him in league lol…
