Here’s the story I wrote for today’s paper on the inaugural Polynesian All-Star Bowl, to be played Saturday at 1 p.m. at Rodriguez High.
Here’s our leader board after our second night of action.
UPDATED: 2/25, 8:45 a.m.: Several people just got a point added because when I updated last night I was still missing the result from Bay School-University in girls Div. V.
After 11 seasons as the boys basketball coach at California High, Cary
Willson has decided to step down.
“I’ve missed out on a number of things, some of my kids’ events, and
decided its a good time to take a break,” said Willson, who has three
kids ages 10, 7 and 5. “I definitely want to get back into coaching at
some point, maybe as an assistant.”
During Willson’s tenure at Cal, the Grizzlies claimed three East Bay
Athletic League titles and qualified for the North Coast Section
playoffs seven times. Cal was eliminated in the first round of the NCS
playoffs by James Logan on Tuesday.
“The relationships I built with the players are very important to me,” Willson said. “I really respect the fact that a lot of ex-Grizzlies come back to see me and keep in touch.”
Before coming to Cal for the 1999-2000 season, Willson coached for
five seasons at Moreau Catholic, the last three as varsity coach. He
will continue to teach Physical Education at Cal.
“(Willson) is a great human being who brought a lot of energy to the
school,” Cal Principal Mark Corti said. “We’re losing a great one.”
Corti said the position will be posted soon and he hopes to have a new
coach in place by the beginning of April.

Here are the final girls basketball stats for the 2009-10 Mission Valley Athletic League season.
I will be posting the final boys stats later in the week.
Yet another Bishop O’Dowd girls basketball player will play Division I basketball next season. Point guard Alexis Bostick, a four-year starter for the Dragons, recently gave an oral commitment to Oregon State. She can sign her letter of intent on April 14.
It’s time to preview the North Coast Section Division I and II boys soccer semifinals.
We’ve gotten a couple calls today, so I figured I’d let everyone know that yes, the NCS Division I boys hoops games are Tuesday of this week. I plugged it into the paper wrong. So, if you want to check out a Division I first round game, it’s Tuesday.
Back by popular demand — and revamped for 2010 — is the North Coast Section basketball playoffs bracket challenge. At stake here is the all important ETERNAL GLORY! We’re going to make things a bit tougher for you guys this year as you’ll be forced to fill out your entire bracket before the tournament begins. Choose wisely, because you won’t be able to make new selections after each round. You’ll be picking both the boys and girls, Divisions I-VI, so be prepared to bone up on your Ferndale and Rincon Valley Christian knowledge just as much as Salesian, Bishop O’Dowd, Newark Memorial, Berkeley and everyone else. Of course, you can only choose to predict the brackets that your interested in, but it’ll make it hard to gain Eternal Glory that way. Below is the link and let the picking begin. Deadline for Divisions I-III is 5 p.m. on Tuesday and for Divisions IV-VI is 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Good luck. Standings will be posted after each round.
*A tip for when you visit the link and make your selections. When you click on a bracket to do the predictions, open it in a new window. That way when you are ready to go to the next bracket, you can go back to that page and open the next bracket in a new window.
