Arroyo High distance runner Danny Thomas has signed a letter-of-intent to attend Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo on a full athletic scholarship.
“It was between them and UCLA. UCLA was only offering me a half scholarship, and Cal Poly was offering me a full scholarship,” Thomas said.
But that’s not the only reason Thomas chose the Mustangs. Thomas’ brother Derek competes for the Cal Poly cross country and track squads.
“I wanted to go up there and hopefully be successful with my brother on the team,” Danny said. “Also, the area in San Luis Obispo is nice, there are nice people there. They also have a good cross country team and also a good (distance team in track) … The running trails at Cal Poly are amazing. At UCLA, it’s all running on streets. ”
Danny finished 11th in the boys 1,600 meter final in last year’s California Interscholastic Federation state track and field championships in June, but has raced sparingly since then. He missed the entire cross country season when he first had the swine flu, then had an IT band injury, he said.
On Saturday, he raced his first mile or 1,600 meter race since the state championships. At the Stanford Invitational, he finished seventh in the boys mile with a time of 4 minutes, 18.66 seconds.
